Criteria in smart collection relevant for non-photo formats?

How does one set criteria when creating smart collection that are relevant for non-photo files (or, better yet, extend it to the full range of metadata in the file info panels).

A collection is just an address of the image.  So if the item has a file location would think you can use it.  Of course metadata has no address.

I don't know what you mean.

  • Smart collection with last X photos imported

I'm trying to create a smart collection that contains the last X (say 1000) photos taken/imported. Not sure what rules to use, can someone give me some pointers.
    Thanks

    For Imported...
Not elegant at all but can be done in a few seconds.
You can go to All Photos in Grid mode and set the Sort to Added Order. Set your grid to 10 Wide and your sort order to Z-A. Grab the first however many rows of 10 you want and transfer them to a Quick Collection.

  • RTP for non media format?

    Hi,
I wasn't sure if this is the right forum to ask.. But I guess it's worth a try.
I am looking into streaming a data file over the network using JMF-RTP. I've looked into the page on "Transmitting and Receiving custom RTP Payloads" from:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/desktop/media/jmf/2.1.1/solutions/CustomPayload.html
Correct me if I'm wrong. According to my understanding, this custom payload has to be one of the supported files for the audio or video from java.media. Is there any way to stream a utf8 data file using rtp?
Thanks for the guidance in advance.

I am looking into streaming a data file over the network using JMF-RTP. That is a HORRIBLE idea.
Correct me if I'm wrong. According to my understanding, this custom payload has to be one of the supported files for the audio or video from java.media. Is there any way to stream a utf8 data file using rtp?Okay, I want to explain a little bit about what RTP does... RTP breaks a recording (audio or visual) into small, independantly-playable chunks...wraps them in a packet and timestamps them, and sends them out over the network.
On the other side, the receiver gets an independantly-playable chunk of data, and it plays it...but if the timestamps arrive out of order, the packets that arrive out of order get dropped and if they arrive after too long of a delta, the packets get dropped and once a packet is gone, it's gone forever.
In audio/video data, losing a small chunk of the video is acceptable if the goal is to see video in real time, which is the goal of RTP. I don't want to get behind a web cam feed by a few microseconds everytime packets travel different routes on the internet, because before long, I'd be behind 5 minutes...and that's especially useless for something like a video conferencing application.
The two major problems with streaming a data file is, you probably can't do anything with the file until you get all of it anyway, but more importantly, data files cannot handle dropped packets. They just can't. Even if you're just sending a simple UTF8 text file, if you drop a packet, you've lost part of the file...you're dropping words and characters randomly, and RTP not only doesn't have a mechanism for retrieving these peices you dropped, it's designed to drop them.
So, to answer your question...sure, you could totally use RTP to send a data file, but that would be stupid for 99% of applications...

  • How do I add or delete photos from a SMART collection?

In LR3 I recently created a Smart Collection from color flagged photos. Now I want to add a few, and delete a few. How?? The obvious method are not allowed with SMART Collections..... Thanks for any input -

    Hi,
If you select ALL images that are in your Smart Selection that you wish to keep in a collection, then create a new 'Non-Smart' Collection, all the selected photographs are automatically added to your new Collection (well, they are in LR 3.3RC on Windows 7). You can then delete the 'Smart' collection, and add / delete photos to your new collection as you wish.

  • Limit a "child" smart collection to only photos found in the "parent" collection set

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but here it is.  I'm starting to organize my pics into Collections, and while some of those collections might be topic/keyword-driven (like a Collection for "spiders" or "flowers"), many of them are for events or "happenings", such as a birthday or Halloween or a trip to Florida.  Within each collection set (which I call the "parent"), I'm making "child" collections that narrow down the photos in the set in increasing levels of perfection.  This is pretty much what Scott Kelby and others evangelize, and I like the idea.  So for instance, I'm working on my child's 3rd birthday party photos, and I really just want the following structure:
Cooper's 3rd birthday [this is a Collection Set]
    - All photos [every photo I took, minus the lousy/duplicate ones I deleted after import]
    - Picks [the "best" pics - photos I've flagged as a "pick" in Lightroom - which I'm going to upload to Flickr]
What I'm trying to do is simply make "Picks" a Smart Collection that automatically contains any photo in the "Cooper's 3rd birthday" Collection Set that also has a "pick" flag on it.  But it seems there's no way to tell Lightroom to limit a Smart Collection to only the photos in the parent Collection Set.  Or is there?  If I have the "Picks" Smart Collection look for all flagged picks, it searches the whole catalog, not just the "Cooper's 3rd birthday" Collection Set.
(Note:  I don't import into folders on my hard drive for different events, I just import everything into folders by month/year, so I can't use a folder name as a search criteria.)
In this case, I see two immediate solutions, both of which are sort of workarounds, not a universal "clean" solution:
Add an additional criteria to search for "picks" that were also captured on the date of the party
Rename the child collection "All photos" to "Cooper's 3rd birthday: all photos" and then use that text as a search criteria for the smart collection
I know that this is a Scott Kelby setup (making sub-collections that are increasingly specific subsets of other children in the Collection Set) and not an Adobe-designed system, but still, it seems like telling a Smart Collection to limit its scope to the Collection Set in which it resides is an obvious feature.  I'm inclined to think I'm missing something here.
    Any thoughts?

I think it's a good idea - consider making a feature request here:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/new
PS - In general, I like the idea of smart collections being treated as fancy lib filters, so their selection along with other folders and/or collections serves to narrow (like it used to be)  instead of broaden (as it does now). Oh well, have a little regress with your progress...

  • Ten Smart Collection bugs/changes

After upgrading the catalog from v2 to v3 I have compared the smart collection counters for every SC and found a lot of differences. So, you may need to check your own SCs or rewrite some rules. Here's a list of bugs and changes in logic I was able to find.
"Rating is not X" does not include unrated photos
Be it a bug or change in logic, but LR2 would include unrated photos in this case. This has also been discussed here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2876677 .
"Rating is 0" includes all photos
This is definitely a bug, as now you cannot catch your unrated images without tricks (e.g. "None: rating >= 1").
    + modifiers reversed role
In LR2 "+abc" meant "starts with abc" and "abc+" meant "ends with abc". In LR3 these have reversed. More than that, in LR2 one could use "+abc+" to identify the word "abc"; in LR3 this doesn't work anymore, since "contains +abc+" is equivalent to "contains abc".
    ! modifier doesn't work
the ! (not) modifier just doesn't work here. The smart collection just hangs. This also causes other SCs to not update their counts after start-up. Try "keyword contains !abc".
Dash ("-") is now treated as a word delimiter
In LR2 "abc-xyz" was treated as a complete word. LR3 treats it as two words: "abc" and "xyz". Not a bug, but some SCs will have to be rewritten.
"Caption is empty" doesn't work for some images
LR3 catalog has a new table in its schema: AgLibraryIPTC. This table appears to be a sort of a cache for captions and copyrights (not to confuse with copyright status). This particular SC rule seems to search in that table in instead of full xmp. However, if an image didn't contain neither a caption nor a copyright in LR2 catalog, after conversion it won't be added to the AgLibraryIPTC table. This, in its turn, will cause the "Caption is empty" rule to fail even though a photo does indeed NOT have a caption.
"Title contains t" includes all image from library
Now this is a really strange one, as I don't have any titles on any of my photos. I tried every other letter and digit, but only "t" fails the check. "Title doesn't contain t" also fails, not including any photo at all, although none of the photos have any title. Again, "t" is the only wrong letter. "T" is often used as an alias in sql joins... could it be the problem?
    "Title contains <space>" hangs
Just like the "!" modifier above, this rule hangs and blocks other "healthy" SCs to not recount themselves after start-up. You need to type in a single space character into the criteria filed.
    "Label Text" is case sensitive
It has been so in LR2 too, but I think a user should be freed from the need to think about case-sensitivity.
"All searchable metadata" doesn't search in copyright.
Note that "All searchable Text" DOES search there, but isn't the copyright field metadata? Note that LR didn't search in copyright with both rules, so this is a kind of improvement, after all.

    Just for your information:
"Rating is not X" does not include unrated photos Fixed in 3.2 RC.
"Rating is 0" includes all photos somewhat fixed, but with issues
+ modifiers reversed role fixed, but with issues
! modifier doesn't work Fixed in 3.2 RC.
Dash ("-") is now treated as a word delimiter Fixed in 3.2 RC.
"Caption is empty" doesn't work for some images Fixed in 3.2 RC.
"Title contains t" includes all image from library Fixed in 3.2 RC.
"Title contains <space>" hangs not fixed
"All searchable metadata" doesn't search in copyright. not fixed, but might not be a bug
"Label Text" is case sensitive not fixed, but might not be a bug

  • Smart Collection default templates

In my Lightroom presets folder I see a folder named Smart Collection Templates
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101633642
These five templates do not show up in Lightroom
I have created a Smart Collection Set and all the Smart Collections to show photos taken during a particular year and the Recently Modified by Floyd smart collection.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101726162
A search of my hard drive reveals my custom presets such as develop, export, slideshow, etc: except the smart collection presets created by me.
If I open one of the default presets such as the Recently Modified template in a text editor such as Word Pad this is what is inside.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101749582
Its interesting that touch time is not on my list of criteria.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101749851
Maybe the whole problem here is I am using a PC and maybe these default smart collections are for Mac only.
My smart collection Recently Modified by Floyd looks like this.
    http://www.pbase.com/hdproman/image/101749852
This is a question that I have not found any answers; luckily it is not really all that important. I just like to solve computer mysteries.
What do you know that I am missing?

John, creating a new catalogue shows the five default smart collections. I should mention my working catalogue was converted from Lightroom version 1. This must be why I never saw the default smart collections as Lightroom version 1 did not have smart collections.
When I right click the import dialog takes me to the Smart Collection Templates folder and I see the five default smart collections. Each template has the extension .lrtemplate and the File of type: shows Supported Files [*.lrsmcol] as the import file type. If I import any of these files I get an error. If I export any smart collections created by me it gets this *.lrsmcol extension and I am able to import this template into any Lightroom catalogue.
I now understand how to create my own smart collections and having the defaults does not matter. My original question was how to create the Recently Modifiedsmart collection which the NAPP help desk answered for me.
Anyway this topic is taking too much of my time and further research is wasted effort.
    Thanks for your reply

  • Problem when enterring punctuation in Metadata and Smart Collections

It seems that Lightroom isn't applying the same logic to punctuation enterred in metadata and smart collections. For example:
Create a photo with City set to "D'Hanis". Just type those keys, LR will replace the simple straight appostrophe with a nicer angled one. And yes, there is such a town--I have many relatives from there.
Now create a smart collection matching City is "D'Hanis" (again, just type that from the keyboard). In this case the ' character seems to be left as the plain ASCII version. This also means that the smart collection will not match the metadata.
Workaround is to select a relevant image, select the metadata and copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl-C), and then paste that value into the smart collection dialog box so that the smart collection is truly searching for the value in the metadata.

    Hi,
At any case the two headers will not be displayed if you select the both "start of table" and "at page break.". Please check whether there is another widow in the form from where the header is displaying.
    Thanks ,
    Abhijit

  • What does the "collection" rule do in a Smart Collection?

It does not work as I expect, based on what the name suggests (I can't base my expectations based on any Adobe documentation since I can find none).
What I want to do is create a smart collection that includes all the photos in another (smart) collection.
    Is this possible?

If you have one SC that works, I'm not clear why you want another that does the same thing.
I have many smart collections used for publishing which are replicated - Publish to Flickr, Smugmug, my iPad and my TV.
For me, it would be very useful to have the concept of a smart collection which mirrored and tracked the definition of another.
ideally for more flexibity it would be good if one smart collection could "inherit" and follow the properties of another as well as potentially add more refinement logic.
Just my view and the way I work.

  • How to move entire Collections to a new catalog, including hierarchy, smart collections and also Publish set ups?

I want to move a large number of Collections, including all their hierarchy and smart collection settting, plus the photos, to a new catalog. I can only find a way of importing the actual photos themselves from the old catalog.
Also is there a way to have the publish settings migrated to the new catalog too?

    Thanks for that.
I agree that a single catalog is the standard approach (all my personal photography is contained in a single catalog over the years). However this is for a large corporate event which we hold each year. This year I want to use extensively the face recognition and I don't want it assessing or confusing people with those who attended the event last year. The even is over 4 days and results in several thousand images from multiple photographers. It's just cleaner to keep the events in their own catalogs for now (good for archiving and backing up too)
    Thanks again. Appreciate your help.

  • Overlapping Keywords in Smart Collections

I have a bunch of photos keyworded with "Family," others with, "Jones Family," others with "Knight Family." I made a smart collection that adds photos with 4 or more stars and the keyword "Family" to it. The problem with this is that it adds photos with any of the keywords listed above. I want the smart collection to add only photos who have a whole keyword that is "Family", not a keyword with the word "Family" as part of the whole keyword. I don't see an option to "match entire keyword only." My reasoning behind this is that just because the picture has the Knight family in it doesn't mean it has my family in it. I use the keyword "Family" for my own family. Is this doable in Lightroom 3?
    Thank you.

I was so SHOCKED when I tried to simply put "Anna Haugen" in quotes, which with almost ANY other searching system on the planet will simply force the complete encosed entry to be looked for ... and Lightroom returned "no matching records".
It is SUCH a simple thing, and so heavily used ... and for crying out loud, PEOPLE HAVE TWO OR THREE NAMES, ADOBE!
Grrr .... ah well, have a nice day all! And thank you, Kevin, for noting that LR doesn't have this capability at the moment.

  • Lightroom 5: AppleScript: action "AXShowMenu" in Smart Collection panel does not show context menu

We are developing a simple automatization tool using Lightroom 5 (the newest version of the CC) using AppleScript.
For some actions, we need the context menu in the Smart Collections panel, for example to import Smart Collection descriptions.
According to the documentation and various sources on stackoverflow and elsewhere, AXShowMenu should bring up that menu.
So far, I have not been able to make that context menu pop up.
Using UIElementInspector and UI Browser, I located the element which does have the AXShowMenu action attached. Based on the code provided by UI Browser, I got the following script, which I run from the Applescript Editor:
tell application "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "Lightroom"
    set frontmost to true
perform action 1 of static text "Smart Collections" of group 1 of row 11 of outline 1 of scroll area 1 of window 6
    delay 2
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
tell application "AppleScript Editor" to activate
Note that if you try to recreate this, the number of the window as well as the number of the row may be different. Also, the last line is just convenience, and not really relevant for the code.
In the Results window in AppleScript Editor, I have the following:
perform action 1 of static text "Smart Collections" of group 1 of row 11 of outline 1 of scroll area 1 of window 6 of process "Lightroom"
--> action "AXShowMenu" of static text "Smart Collections" of group 1 of row 11 of outline 1 of scroll area 1 of window 6 of application process "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5"
which means that I did invoke the action.
    But … nothing happens.
Any insight, workaround etc. is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Just for the records, I did ask the same question on Stackoverflow, and there I got an answer which does work. This solution uses a little Python program to really simulate mouse clicks.

  • LrPhoto:getContainedPublishedCollections() to work with Smart Collection

I have customized the original flickr publish plugin to suit my liking and to model the behavior of Flickr especially the Photostream and Photosets concept. I love the improve plugin i created very much. When I started to work with smart collections to publish my photos to flickr.most of the functionality and behavior of flickr I had created breakdown as I rely heavily on LrPhoto:getContainedPublishedCollections() to interconnect each photoset (collection). Apparently this function doesn't work with smart collection. My question would be
    1. For the next update of lightroom, I hope to see the function LrPhoto:getContainedPublishedCollections() to also work with Smart Collections.
    2. For the time being is there any alternative way to reference smart collections from a LrPhoto?

  • Smart Collection date problems

I have some pictures in my catalog that have completely incorrect dates. My step son didn't set the date on his camera and they are in the year 2048. These pictures keep appearing completely out of context and drives me nuts!
For example, they are in the Past Month smart collection. And in the new Past Week smart collection I created. They are not in a This Week or This Month smart collections I just created. I really would like to use "Past Week" as opposed to "This week" but it is useless.
I haven't changed them because I don't know the real date but, alas, I want to keep them. It doesn't look like I can remove the date (which date does LR use anyway?!) in LR. Nor does LR support partial dates. I guess I'm going to have to make something up. Does "Edit Capture Time" now work in LR? I suppose an approximate date would be better than a completely wrong date (but of course I will forget it's not an exact date...)
    Any comments, suggestions?
    Judy

Just use your smart collection to hold all photos with the date 2048. Then edit the date in the exif data on the first photo, then select all the rest and sync the rest of the photos. I used Edit Capture Time and it worked for me. You might be able to change the date by selecting all of them first, and then doing an edit capture time. One piece of advice though, is to give them a unique keyword before messing with the date. That way if you need to re-do anything you will have a way to collect the photos.
To answer your question, I believe LR uses the capture time when you do a date search.
