Critical process died

I have a custom built hp envy sleekbook. It froze in the middle of playing saints row 2 about a week after a new windows update to 8.1. I have never had my laptop freeze to a point that restarting couldn't fix it. It keeps saying critical process died and gives me a list of solutions that don't work, then restarts and does it all over. I have a windows 8 guidebook that tells me to run a recovery disk, but my laptop doesn't have a disk drive. I don't want to reformat my laptop, but don't know what else to do.

Hi
What is the critical process that your machine reports ????

  • Kernal Data Inpage Error, No Bootable Device, Critical Process Died AGAIN! Please help!

I bought this S55-A5295 in July 2013. It started to have problems in April 2014. After 3 months of Critical Process Died, No Bootable Device, and having it shut down multiple times a day, I eventually convince service to take accept it because when I tried to do the recovery, the hard drive was missing partitions needed. (My $30 to ship, despite under warranty)
I received it back late June. The factory replaced the faulty screen (a different problem), but did not replace the hard drive. They supposedly "fixed" it, and added the needed partitions, should I need to do recovery again. I know that the partition was added because when I got it back, instead of being like new out of the box and ready to use, I was locked out because it was set to administrator and there was no option to access it, so I had to use the partitioned info. and do ANOTHER reset after getting it back from them. Not great service all around.
Now the laptop is out of warranty and I've started having problems again.
Sept. 16 -- I had a Kernal Data Inpage Error. The laptop made a horrible sound and shut down. At the time there was a Toshiba Canvio Slim II external drive attached.
Sept. 18 -- EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD 0xc00000bb the boot configuration data for your PC is missing or containing errors.
Sept. 19 -- Kernal Data Inpage Error. At this point I had removed the external drive, in case that was the problem. It wasn't letting me remove it earlier in the week. I didn't use it much over the next week.
Sept. 27 -- No Bootable Device.
Sept. 30 -- Kernal Data Inpage Error (volmgrx.sys)
Then Critical Process Died -- 3 different times
Then it restarted itself once without an error code.
Today, Oct. 1, I installed updates from Toshiba, including one fpr HDD and I performed maintenance. I tried to do the hard drive check, but the tabs in the instructions on the computer don't actually exist.
The directions: go to Computer, Properties, Tools tab (can't find it) , so no Error Checking and Check.
However, I did find, under Performance information and Tools my computer's performance rating. The Primary Hard Disk data transfer rate is 5.9.
So far it hasn't shut down today and hopefully the updates have fixed any issues, but I want to be prepared if they don't.
Are these errors coming from my laptop's hard drive? Is there a way for me to actually check that? Are the errors somehow connected to my TOSHIBA external drive? I haven't connected the external drive since the errors started happening, but i will need to use it again at some point, I just wanted to make sure the laptop was okay first.
Also, I am still running Windows 8. That's what they reset it to at the factory, and last time the issues seemed to correspond to me upgrading to 8.1, so I am wary to end up with a $600 paper weight again.
    Please advise. Thanks!!

..went through the whole reset.   ...   ..do ANOTHER reset after getting it back from them
What can I say? The gold-standard test for a software problem is to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents.

  • Windows 8.1 Blue Screen of Death "Critical process died" after Windows update

Hey there, my Envy laptop has the "Critical Process Died" blue screen of death error after doing 3 things today:
    1. A BIOS update through HP Support Assistant.
    2. An x64 windows process update (optional) through the Control Panel.
    3. An NVIDIA update.
What can I do to fix this error? I'm okay with a complete system wipe. Please help.
    *Windows 8.1 64bit

The only option that worked for me was to "reset" my PC, as in a complete wipe. it's working properly again, when I read reviews of windows 8.1 I didn't really believe the people who said stay away from it, but since I've had more problems than I'd wish to, I'm too afraid to go back to it. Thanks anyways guys.

  • S540 critical process died

    Hy,
I have upgraded my S540 to Windows 8.1. I installed all drivers and updates and have now sometimes bluescreens with the message "critical process died". I know this is not much information but I have no idea how to examne or solve the problem.

  • A720 critical process died HELP!!

Hi, I have a problem with my lenovo A720 and it is an upgrade to windows 8 from windows 7 pro. Now, the computer won't even turn on because of the BSOD of windows 8, the critical process died. It just keep restarting when it reaches the windows 8 logo, the blue login. The only menu i can open is the Lenovo BIOS setup utility and it doesn't even help. I can't seem to find any system recovery option. Please Help !!

    hi kevingo,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
It looks like something went wrong when you upgraded the machine from Windows 7 PRO to Windows 8. If you have created a backup of your files, you can try to:
    1. Run One Key Recovery by repeatedly tapping the F2 key during boot-up. This will guide you through in restoring Windows 7 back to the machine then you can perform the Windows 8 upgrade again.
    2. Clean install Windows 8 into the machine (refer to this guide)
    Hope this helps.

  • Lenovo Z50-75 : Critical Process Died

Hi, i bought lenovo z50-75 few months ago. I'm trying to update my computer on 21/07/15 as it suggest to update and restart. But then it stuck during update and blue screen with a sad face appeared. It said that my laptop having CRITICAL PROCESS DIED error. After it collected all the data and restarted, this error keep coming to me and i have no idea what's going on.The blue screen keep coming to me just after a few minutes/seconds i restart my laptop. I tried to go into Safe Mode so that i can run a scan or anything. But this is another problem.I can't launch Safe Mode. For your information,i just bought this laptop on March (if i not mistaken).I didn't expect that i'll facing this severe issue just after few months i bought it,not even half a year! Now i can't even backup my files in my laptop due to this Blue Screen problem! Do you have any solution?Do you provide on-site repair service?

I can't use a restore point because my laptop keep showing blue screen. So i tried refreshing my system and it worked. Now my laptop is ok.Thank you. I  still have two questions. First of all, now i refresh my system and it restore to original system. If my laptop suggest to update should i update it or not? Second, my apps gone after i refresh the system. Some of my apps such as Art Rage and Autodesk SketchBook can only download once with license, now the apps gone, how can i redownload it?

  • "CRITICAL PROCESS DIED" and "FINGERPRINT READER IS NOT CONNECTED.

the two issues are as follows; When I try to use my fingerprint reader (after upgrading to win 10) I get the message that the "FINGERPRINT READER IS NOT CONNECTED". How does one get it to connect? When I try to reinstall any software that requires a (RE-START OR BOOT) with HP Recovery Manager, it gives me the new blue screen that says, CRITICAL PROCESS DIED. Please assist. Jon

It is possible to work-around the issue, but some manual steps are needed:
    1.  delete "smihlp.sys" from "c:\program files\thinkvantage fingerprint software"
    2.  run "services.msc" and stop the service "Windows Biometric Service"
    3.  delete the file "031D23AD-15AF-4e25-B7B3-DE34893097ED.DAT" from "c:\Windows\system32\WinBioDatabase"
    4.  reboot the computer  (important!!)
    5.  now try to enroll some fingers
This should make it possible to enroll fingerprint and use it to log into Windows, until the bug can be fixed in some future version of BIOS and/or Fingerprint software.

  • Discoverer 4i Processes Die on Unix

Does anyone have this problem in the version of Discoverer that comes with 9iAS 1.0.2.2?
I am starting my Discoverer processes using the three script files startall.sh, applypreferences.sh and registerall.sh. But when I log off the machine, all the Discoverer processes die and no Discoverer connections can be made. The only way I can keep Discoverer connectivity up is by remaining logged in as the user on the unix box who started the shells indefinitely. During this time all Discoverer connectivity is fine.
I'm on Solaris 2.6 and my oracle user's $SHELL variable is /bin/sh. I have tried putting the jobs in the background and cron -- nothing works.
    Any ideas? Thanks..
    Kate

I'm assuming because you're using 9iAS 1.0.2.2 that you are using Discoverer 4.1. I haven't had any problems with 4.1. I remember that Discoverer 3i did die when I logged out. I didn't bother to get it to work because we had so many other problems.

  • DB connect problem,Disp+Work.exe dies and the work processes die on startup

    Dear Experts,
I am getting the error on SAP startup,Disp+Work.exe dies and the work processes die on startup.
I found below error in my DEV_W0 trace as below
*failed to establish conn to np:(local).*
*C  Retrying without protocol specifier: (local)*
*C  Provider SQLNCLI could not be initialized. See note #734034 for more information.*
    *C  Using provider SQLOLEDB instead.*
*C  ExecuteAndFlush return code: 0x80040e14 Stmt: [if user_name() != 'pec' setuser 'pec']*
    *C  sloledb.cpp [ExecuteAndFlush,line 5989]: Error/Message: (err 4604, sev 0), There is no such user or group 'pec'.*
*C  Procname: [ExecuteAndFlush - no proc]*
But i could see the user 'pec' is availble in my database users list  with db_owner , public permissions also been assigned to it.
However When trying to delete a user on SQL server 2000, we recieve the message "You cannot drop the selected login ID because that login ID owns objects in one or more databases.".
Please refer the below work process trace and please suggest the possible solution..

    Hi Rohit and Subhadip,
My problem was solved, thanks for your effort.
reason is that, user 'pec' not been associated with login user for the SQL server.
subha : when i execute the first command which you suggested, but couldn't find any user's list.
so i didn't  tried with the second command. just to give a final try i have executed the script like below and its worked out.
    USE PEC
    GO
    EXEC sp_change_users_login 'update_one','pec','pec'
    GO
Now i see that all work process are starting,,,thank you so much rohit and subhadip
I could have try this first ,when you guys suggested since i couldn't find any output with the first command i didn't proceed with second one.
Since deleting and creating method doesn't seems to be a good, i have just to give a try executed the second command and its worked.
Thanks for your time and patience
    Many Thanks,
    Vinod

  • Trying to figure out why dgraph and logserver processes died

I don't see any thing in the logs telling me why these processes died. I verified that there was no EAC stop command issued. And the Workbench process was still running with a start date from 3 weeks ago, which tells me the instance/server/host has been up the entire time.
    I fixed this problem with
    runcommand.sh Dgraph1 start
    runcommand.sh LogServer startAny ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Joe,
One other thought which you may have had as well, did the dgraph process possibly die with an abnormal end? I would also look in the dgraph's log file for any ERRORs or FATALs and I would also look for a core.*.dmp file that are sometimes generated when the dgraph process fails. I can't remember exactly what the files are called, but you may try grep'ing for "core" or ".dmp"

  • Critical: Java app Processes dying in Linux

    Hi,
I have come across a critical error on our production system. We have some java apps running as linux background processes. We used to run these off a jdk1.3 box with no problems using
    nohup java App &
We have upgraded to jdk1.4 but very randomly our apps are just disappearing from the background processes!
I have using the -verbose and -Xprof options to java and found this logging information..

I don't know if this holds any clues but a SIGHUP is a hangup signal and even though we use nohup, it does seem to kill the processes.
Would be very grateful for advice.

    DISPATCHER EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN ***

    Hi,
Upon restarting the host system I found the application server to be running normal.
I am not sure if there were any pending configuration requiring the host system to be restarted and causing the dispatcher not to become operational.
Thanks a lot for your response though.
If I get the error again, I would surely paste both the logs here in my question.
    Best Regards,
    OI

ims_master process suddenly died (and quite magically
too, as it seems). Normally there are two ims_master
processes running concurrently by the Messaging
Server. There don't need to be any ims_master processes running, they only run when there is new email to be delivered and for a given idle period after this time - I assume that you mean IMAP processes (based on your log entries/comments below).
Users of the mail store was unable to
retrieve their messages and their full mail client
was clocking. Upon noticing that the process has
died, we promptly restarted mail (./stop-msg,
./start-msg). And this is a production system. That is the correct thing to do. If an IMAP/POP/MSHTTP process dies, you MUST restart the entire store to clear out any database locks left behind by the dead process.

There are no core dump files that got generated.Do you have your system configured to produce a core dump (coreadm)?
Also the core dump file could be located in any number of locations on your filesystem, have you tried running something like `find / -name core` (during a quiet time of course)
Without a stack trace of the core dump there isn't much we can do to help.
    Shane.
