Cron won't run applications

I use LuckBackup and have it setup to run every night at a certain time using cron and I noticed that Luckybackup will no longer start as scheduled. It seems like any application that requires the "X server" will not run. I tried the following test schedules to see if they would work and the only one that works is the "touch" command which doesn't use the X server.
12 23 * * * touch /home/gumper/crontest.txt
02 21 * * * export DISPLAY=:0.0 ; /usr/bin/gcalctool
02 21 * * * export DISPLAY=:0.0 ; /usr/bin/luckybackup
After cron tries to run gcalctool and luckybackup I get the following messages emailed to me:
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
(gcalctool:4124): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
And
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyluckybackup: cannot connect to X server :0.0
From comparing my pacman log and when Luckybackup stopped running as scheduled, it appears that it started immediately after installing Gnome shell and Gnome 3.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'll give the "xhost" command a try to see if it helps.

try putting the full path before the javac command:

if this works, then put that path:

  • Cron won't run ioreg, even though I can by hand - ADVANCED UNIX HELP NEEDED

This is driving me crazy. Cron will not run the ioreg command.
I have a script that does the following:
    #! /bin/tcsh
    set THEDATE = `date`
    set ME = `whoami`
    echo -n "$ME; $1; $THEDATE; " >> ~/Documents/BatteryStat/battery.log
    ioreg -f -n AppleSmartBattery -r | grep -e 'ExternalConnected\|CurrentCapacity\|FullyCharged\|Amperage\|LegacyBatteryInfo\ |AvgTimeToFull\|AvgTimeToEmpty\|DesignCapacity\|Temperature\|CellVoltage\|Instan tAmperage\|CycleCount\|Voltage\|IsCharging\|InstantTimeToEmpty\|TimeRemaining\|M axCapacity' | tr '\n' ';' >> ~/Documents/BatteryStat/battery.log
    echo >> ~/Documents/BatteryStat/battery.log
If I run it from the command line I get what I expect: a bunch of data dumped to this log file. If I stick it into cron, however, I only get my login, the first argument to the script and the date. No output from the ioreg command.
I know that cron is really just a wrapper for launchd or something like that and that the issues I am having have to do with the fact that the "user" under which the cron job is running is not the console user. Or something like that. It is all just a bit over my head. But it is certainly driving me completely insane!
Does anyone have any ideas how to make cron actually do something useful? (this is the second time that I have tried to use cron for a script and the second time it refuses to run for what I am guessing are similar reasons).
Any help is (or even just clues are) greatly appreciated.

Absolute paths. Of course. Seems so obvious now but it really had me stumped. Absolute paths solved it. Mark, thank you SO much.
My machine has been acting really really flaky with the battery and this script will hopefully help me either get a new one or find out if the PMU is the problem.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS6 won't run, problem with Application Manager

I've now got three Adobo Photoshop CS products on my MacBook Pro, the latest is CS6 which won't run.
I own Photoshop CS3, I just happen to install the CS5.x suite today, which runs during the trial period (30 day, today is day #1).
I then see that PSCS6 is out so I install that and get an error dialog.
    Adobe Photoshop CS6
Adobe Application Manager, required to verify your license, is missing or damaged.
Please download a new copy of Adobe Application Manager from http://www.adobe.com/go/applicationmanager.
I go to that URL, run the new application manager and get that same dialog box when I try to run CS6.
When I did the CS6b install it asked for my Adobe ID/password and I entered that and the install completed. So I'm not sure what's going on.

Hi, Using OSX Lion...was getting the same AAM errors.
I hope my "fix" is of help:
During one installation attempt I noticed that it was using an Adobe Application Manager here:
    ~User/Applications/Adobe/OOBE/PDApp/core/Adobe Application Manager
It is version 6.0.236.0 and the installer deletes it after the install. The download page only has version 2.
So during my last install attempt, I grabbed a copy of that OOBE directory -- to catch the support files -- before deletion.
Did not work in user Applications folder, but when I copied it in the location of AAM 2, it works.
The full location is as follows (I renamed the original OOBE folder as a back-up):
    HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/PDApp/core/Adobe Application Manager
Authorization works, and software update seems to...however, uninstall can't use this method.

  • I installed Lion OS X and Logic Pro won't run. I downloaded the 9.1.5 update: "An Eligible Logic Pro Version Was Not Found in the Applications Folder.  This Update require Logic Pro Version 9.0 or higher".  I have Logic Pro Version 9.1.1 installed.

I even pulled the dmg file into the Logic Studio folder in my applications directory and it still does not recognize it.  What do I do now?

    Niel:  Thanks.
For others benefit, here is what happened.
I had installed Logic Studio 9.1 some time ago.......not knowing what all the programs were nor what they did, I created a "Logic Studio" subfolder in my applications folder and put all Logic Studio programs into it so I'd know where they were and could review each at my leisure over time.
My assumption now is that when the updater looks for the Logic Pro program, it looks only in the applications folder.  It seems lame that it would not also look in the subfolders of the applications folder, but that apparently IS the way it works.  Because my Logic Pro program was located in the "Logic Studio" subfolder, the updater just didn't see it..hence the error message I received when I tried to update.
Solution:  I moved all the Logic Studio programs out of the subfolder and now they reside in the applications folder. Ran the 9.1.5 updater and it worked like a charm.

  • Itouch downloaded applications won't run

I have an Itouch with the 2.1 operating system. I got it a month ago and everything ran fine. I downloaded several free applications on there and now suddenly, none of them work. Everything else works, its just when I try to run the applications, they start and just stop. They say they are free apps in the Apple store. My first thought was they were demo versions. I'm trying to run Paper Football Lite, Four Free, Astro Tilt, and others. Can anyone help me figure out why they won't run? Everything else runs fine.
    Thanks!

I got an iPOD touch last week and have same problem. About 7 FREE apps, and 1 Paid for now bring up the splash screen and then it goes back to main screen - they just don't run. My touch sync fine with my authorized macintosh using my valid .MAC account, etc... Also, just upgraded the touch to 2.2 and no help.
Here's the strange thing... If I download another application - anything - all the applications start working again. I can't find a rhyme or reason, but after a few days they all stop working. I download another app - and they all work!
    Anyone?

  • What windows applications won't run on a mac?

I'm about to go from PC to Mac and would like to get an understanding of what common applications won't run on a Mac.  I'm not interested in things like MS Office and such which I know have Apple version, but I'm interested in Adobe Acrobat, Flash Player, Others such as Garmin, eBay Turbo Lister, Nikon View, etc.  Seems to me I've heard that Flash files won't work on Apple Products.  Are there apps that will allow some of these to run?
I don't think I have too many to worry about but I'd appreciate hearing what challenges others have had and what to expect in general.

All Office and Adobe products available on both platforms. Flash works fine on a Mac, just not on iDevices like iPads or iPhones.
Others that you've listed just find out if the developers have a Mac version. Do some research.

  • Pages application won't run; documents are inaccessible.

I have been using Pages for 1.5 years. I'm using version 4.1 on Mac OS X (10.7.5). Pages won't run, and files not saved as .doc files won't open. When I select Pages from applications, or search for it in Spotlight and try to select it, there is a blip in the dock, as if the icon is going to appear, but it doesn't. When I try to access documents saved in Pages, I can find them, but nothing happens when I try to open them. No error messages of any sort pop up.
I had just installed the Freedom App, and Microsoft Office for Mac, and after reboot I noticed the Pages problem. It doesn't seem like that should matter, but before this, Pages seemed to be working fine.

  • Certain applications won't run

Certain applications won't run. Mail, Safari (I'm sending this with Firefox), and now Installer. The disc now verifies although I had to repair the disc earlier. This started when trash-emptying wouldn't complete. Disc Utility from the Tiger install disc found what it called a minor error - a file that was a little too big (don't remember the file) and free space a little too small. Here's the crash log when I try to run the 10.4.10 PPC combo update - after a hint I got in another thread about a problem like this. I believe the same file is mentioned for any of the apps that won't run. If you have any ideas how I should proceed, please let me know. Thanks, Joe

How bad is it to try to install the combo update from the Terminal? Thanks, Joe
    Well, it's this bad:
First off, a disclaimer. I didn't think of this, and I've not tried it from the DVD, though I did check the commands on a booted system. But it looks like it should work to me.
Okay, to use Terminal on the DVD, do this:
First, open up the disk image for the updater and copy the ".pkg" or ".mpkg" file onto your desktop, since that's an easy place to find it. Eject the disk image and make sure the package file stays on the desktop. Make a note of the package's exact name, including capitalization. You'll need it later. Now, open the Terminal on your Mac and type the following:
    cd ~/Desktop; pwd
Write this path down somewhere, and keep in mind that case counts. It'll be something like "/Users/username/Desktop".
Now, take a look at the name of your hard drive. It's most likely something like "Macintosh HD". The main thing is to note any spaces in the name and note the name. I'm not sure whether auto-complete, and all the other good stuff, works in the Terminal on the DVD, so it's best to write these things down.
Now, boot from the Tiger Installer DVD and open up the Terminal app from the "Utilities" menu. Now, you need to construct a command to open up the installer package for the update package. Here's how it should look (without customization):
    "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/usr/bin/open" -a /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/username/Desktop/MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10PPC.pkg"
A couple of things to note: first, the quotes around the first part are necessary because of the space in "Macintosh HD", same with the last part. Also, it's possible that the installer will open up the OS X installer package from the DVD as well. Just be really sure you're installing the update and not the full OS. Also, make sure you customize the username in the last part, just before "Desktop".
Finally, if you've installed any updates after the 10.4.10 update (especially security updates), it's possible that the problem with the WebKit will not be fixed, since the 10.4.10 combo installer may not install the older version of the WebKit over the newer one. In that case, you might have to do the other updates that came after 10.4.10 to eventually get back to where you should be. And all this might be in vain if some other critical file is damaged, but hasn't been updated since 10.4.0.
    charlie
P.S. -- Like I said before, I haven't tried this, and didn't even think of it. I found the general procedure at, of all places, the Washington Post web site in the comments to a blog entry. Look down toward the bottom.

    Hi,

The parameter from shows up and all the LOVs are there, the reset botton works, the Submit Query botton only shows Submit (NO QUERY). The report won't run when I click on Submit botton.
But it works perfectly if no mimetype=application/vnd.ms-excel in URL

  • Firefox won't run, but says it is when I try to unistall it - Win 7 task manager says it isn't..how can I get around this to uninstall it?

I have been trying to open a browser window with Mozilla Firefox 6.0.2 (x86 en-US). It won't run, however, when I try to uninstall the program, it says I have to close firefox first. Win 7 task manager does not show the program as running.
I tried again, and still get the same message from Firefox. I checked the task manager again, not running. Tried running it - won't run. Tried uninstall, got the same message, close firefox before trying to uninstall - firefox isn't running!
I would appreciate any help that you could give me. I want to use firefox, especially since it is the browser that opens Webkinz correctly for my grandkids.

In the task manager, are you looking at Processes? That is where you find Firefox listed when you see no interface, not in Applications.
This page might have some useful information about that problem.
