Crop a circle from a jpeg

Hi All,
I have been trying for some time (many hours of research and software trials) to succesfully cut a circular  object (a football) fom a jpeg which as we know always have  the rectangular area around it. A friend suggested  Photoshop but as it would be quite an investment for what would be for the time being a single issue. My questions are
1 Can Photoshop achieve this?
2. What product would I need?
3. Is there a trial version so I  can experiment?
Many thanks if anyone can help.

I'll run you through it.

How can I crop a circle shape from a photo and adjust the size or dimensions of the crop?

Use the elliptical marquee tool, hold down shift to constrain a circle, then when you've got everything the way you want, Image>crop.

  • How to create a circle from the centre?

Hi. I'm using PS CS3 and I want to create a perfectly round circle from the centre. How do you do this?
I know pressing shift while dragging makes it perfectly round. I've also read that pressing alt at the same time draws it from the centre, but it's not working, it just comes up with the eyedropper tool. Am I missing something or is there a different way to do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
If you click and hold the mouse and then press the Alt key and drag it should work.
Also, after you start dragging, add the Shift key to constrain to a circle.

No, you will need something more advanced, like Photoshop.

  • "Error while relocating" after deleting RAW from RAW+JPEG pairs (Important FYI)

This is not a question, but something I recently discovered that I think will be important for the Aperture community.
Not too long ago, I asked a question about how to remove the RAW files from RAW+JPEG pairs. The concensus was that it couldn't be done through Aperture, but that one could delete them through the Finder. The answer I got (and that has popped up in other threads on similar topics) was "it's probably not wise, but as far as I know, it won't have an adverse effect." I don't think any response along these lines has been able to point to a specific problem that can arise from such a "hack." Well, I found one today...
It appears that if a user uses Finder to "break" RAW+JPEG pairs by deleting the RAW file and leaving the JPEG (and I assume this goes for deleting the reverse), Aperture will NOT be able to "Relocate Originals..." Instead, "Aperture will return the error: Error while relocating (File not Found): "(null)". I ran into this error the other day while trying to change my file structure by relocating all files. I regularly ran into this error, and it was only after some extensive that I was able to narrow it down 100% of the time to the RAW+JPEG pairs I had "broken." I haven't encounterd any other adverse behavior from "breaking" these file pairings, but this one, at least, could be serious.
So, for future reference, I think the response by the Aperture community when someone asks "How do I delete the RAW file from RAW+JPEG" pairs, should be "Use Finder if you must, but please note Aperture will not be able to 'Relocate Originals..
PS This should NOT be understood as a criticism of those who have responded to this question in the past. There's obviously no way to know about these little quirks until one of us stumbles across them. I hope this information will be helpful going forward, both as a caution when deleting one of the pair, and as a possible answer for the "Error while relocating" message.
PPS I don't think I ran across an explanation for this when I originally searched for the error message bolded above.
If someone has already provided this information, my apologies.

Interesting the last post before this one you posted was back in May 2011 Removing RAW, keeping JPG?
Thanks for that thread. That helps jog ye olde memory. As such, I would edit my original thread to read "The concensus I gathered from researching multiple responses to questions similar to mine was that it couldn't be done through Aperture*, but that it was possible from Finder though highly inadvisable." I won't bother recreating my research at the time (not even sure I could, since it was more than two years ago), but suffice it to say that the thread you've linked was not my sole encounter with this problem. I do appreciate that you've reminded me that this was not something I had done solely through numerous posts on Apple Discussions. I imagine I likely spent time reading multiple posts here and elsewhere, uncovering the concensus (which i think is still a fair term) that it could not be done through Aperture*, could be through Finder, but was inadvisable.
*This is still accurate, afaik. You cannot delete the pair from a RAW+JPEG pair in Aperture. Exporting, then deleting in Finder, then reimporting is still not something "done in [entirely] Aperture."
    Frank Caggiano wrote:
No one actually told you to delete anyting in in the Finder you came up with this yourself as your own solution
This comes from the critical mistake on my part of not making clear that I was paraphrasing multiple responses rather than saying "Bob told on a Monday that i should..." That is one huge mea culpa and I'd edit it if I could. To be clear, my comment that "it's probably not wise, but as far as I know, it won't have an adverse effect" is a paraphrase of multiple answers to the broad question dealing with how Aperture handles files that have been deleted in Finder. At the time, it was known that you could delete a file in Finder, that Aperture could be made to accept that, that it might cause issues further down the road, but that those issues were unkown. I paraphrased that but failed to make it clear that's what I was doing. Again, my apologies.
    Frank Caggiano wrote:
So I'm not really sure what it is you are coming back here now to say? There was no 'consensus' to do this, it was your own 'solution'
In this respect, I think you've misunderstood me. At the time I made this post, I still was not seeing a direct connection between deleting files in Finder and adverse consequences in Aperture (or perhaps I should say my searches did not turn up such a connection). As such, I made this post to provide the community with clear evidence of why one should not delete one-of-a-pair files in Finder. Again, I may have simply missed the thread that detailed that to do so would result in a null error when relocating Masters. That said, in July 2013 I had been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I was getting the null error and I did not see a thread that asked "have you deleted files in Finder" as a way to troubleshoot.
Hopefully, I've cleared up any confusion now. To bring this all back around to my original point for the thread, I intended it to (1) offer a more direct way to troubleshoot the null error on relocating Masters, and (2) to offer a cautionary tale for those who choose to delete one of the RAW+JPEG pair in Finder. There are better (though more time- and space-consuming) ways to get it done, and my original post should help demonstrate why.

Hello.  May I ask:  I am using Acrobat 6.0.2, and having trouble formatting a PDF created from multiple (jpeg) files.  Each page is formatted to A4 size, portrait.  But when I create the PDF, each sheet appears as tiny, in the middle of a huge white page.  I cannot seem to find any controls to adjust this.  Any advice appreciated.

Thanks CtDave, for the further info.  Unfortunately, those suggestions are not working, which is strange.
....Until last week, I used to make multi-page PDFs straight from Photoshop: File > Automate > Make PDF.  One simply choses the files, orders them, and creates a PDF.  (Resolution doesn't matter; 300 DPI is no problem.)  However, my new Photoshop CS5 does not have the option in Automate.
What I've done, seeing as Acrobat is letting me down, is use Bridge (new to me) to create the PDF.  It worked without a problem, but seems like more work than the old PS method.  I will download a newer version of Acrobat to see if that makes any difference.
.....Also, thanks Test Screen Name:  I agree with you that jpeg is irrelevant, and that one can make a PDF from Photoshop (Print > Save As - pdf).  But that only works for SINGLE PAGE pdf, not multiple pages as far as I can tell.
    Kind regards,

  • Hi i am trying to make a cut path from a jpeg i designed in photoshop so that i can cut a sticker on my plotter of the jpeg  can you help

hi i am trying to make a cut path from a jpeg i designed in photoshop so that i can cut a sticker on my plotter of the jpeg  can you help

    Peter,
The cleanest way is to lock your imge, the draw the cut shape with the Pen Tool, set Fill to None and a suitable Stroke Weight. For rounded paths, you ClickDrag Handles out from carefully chosen Anchor Points all the way round, ending where you started. You may adjust the position of the current Anchor Point while you draw by pressing the Spacebar, which lets you freeze the Handles and move the Anchor Point about; you can Ctrl/Cmd+Z to go back, and you may start over. To practise with the Pen Tool, you may try some (outlined) letters from a font with serifs, or any relevant curved path that resembles the desired cut path for the image.
Or, if you have a distinct colouring where you want the cut path, you may Object>Image Trace the image with the right settings (including creating (stroked) paths, then expand and delete everything but the cut path.

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Why am I losing crop when exporting from LR (?)

Hi. I'm a newbie to LR and am stumped trying to figure something out (Yes, I've checked all through the forums).  I've made some adjustments to a bunch of photos in LR3--contrast, brightness, etc.  I've also cropped them to 5x7s.  When I export as a JPEG to a separate folder on my Mac, or when I choose to edit in Photoshop using the "Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments" command, the photos show up with all the LR adjustments... EXCEPT for the crop.  The photos are showing up in the Mac folder and in Photoshop as their original photo size, i.e. their size when I imported them into LR from my card.
What am I missing or doing wrong?  When I export the photos, why aren't they showing up in a separate location or in Photoshop with the 5x7 crop that I performed in LR3?
thanks in advance .. this is driving me nuts.

I think more information is needed...  Can you post a screen shot from LR and PS showing the crop differences?
As the previous poster said, size is not an issue here, don't worry that your 5"x7" crop comes out as 20x28" in PS, if that is your issue.
That said, however, if you've cropped an image, when you export it the image should look the same.  Printing can be different, though, depending on how you are printing.  So let's stick with export/crop to start with!
Please post a couple of sceen shots, one showing LR and the crop you picked, and then one in PS after "edit in PS with LR adustments" done.
    Cheers!

  • Is it possible to crop a circle or oval in Aperture?

    Hi,
I would like to crop my photo's as circles or ovals without having to buy Photoshop. Is it possible in Aperture? I schoot and edit in raw.
    thank you
    lilian

I am only wondering how it will effect the quality of my picture.
That will depend on the quality you use to export from Aperture to Preview, and also on the quality you use to save from Preview. Export at the best quality you need for the purpose you want the photo for.
The basic idea is to use the "elliptical selection" from the "Edit Toolbar", then drag the mouse across the rectangular area that contains your ellipse/circle and then copy the selected area to the clipboard. Now create a new image (File > New from Clipboard) and this will create a new photo with transparent background. Then save this image in a format that supports transparency - tiff or png.

  • The raw portion of a referenced master got separated from its jpeg pair when I was relocating originals.  Can I recombine the raw and jpeg pair?

Hi, I'm a fairly new Aperture user and have just started storing my photos on an external hard drive. An error message appeared when I was relocating originals of a project. It stopped relocating at one image, saying that the jpeg file did not exist. I found the raw file name under the new project folder that I was relocating it to, but it's jpeg pair did not move. The file names look identical except one ends in .JPG and the other as .NEF. I tried to combine originals, but I got the same error message and when I looked at the files the raw now had (1) attached to it, whereas the jped didn't. The Aperture window started to close unexpectedly many times. I tried Repair Permissions and Repair Database and that seemed to stop Aperture from closing unexpectedly, but the raw and jpeg  pair are still in separate folders. How can I get them paired up again or does it matter? I'm using Mac OS X and Aperture version 3.4.5.
    Thanks,
    sophie

If you don't take care when choosing the location for referenced images, you can create some problems for yourself.
From an operational perspective 'Managed' images means Aperture will take care of the image file storage for you, 'Referenced' means you will take care of it yourself.
There are a number of things that may have happened but this is what I think is most likely:
If you shoot a lot of photos with the same brand of camera, eventually you'll end up with duplicate file names, for example two different files called DSC_1234.NEF. If you attempt to store these in the same folder yourself, worse case scenario is you may inadvertently overwite one of the files. If you use Aperture to relocate, you'll get one of the files with a new name of DSC_1234 (1).NEF.
So your first step is to figure out what these files really are. Are they duplicates, or are they different files with the same name, and do they each have a matching .JPG
Aperture has the tools to fix up the problem, but you need to confirm what the problem is first.
If you don't have many of the (1) files, it may be worth continuing your 'relocate' to subfolders - making sure your subfolder hierarchy doesn't cause duplicate names to be stored together. Then when everything else is stored correctly, address the problem images by moving them to where they should be, with the right name and the JPG/NEF pairs together.
You can then search for missing files in Aperture and use the 'Locate Referenced Images' to reconnect them with Aperture.

  • How to make a circle from image?

    hello,
I have an image I created that is sort of straight, but I want to turn it into a circle, so I can make a frame. What's the best way to accomplish that?
My image is sort of like this:
    Thank you!

    Polar Coordinates
Use Canvas to make the canvas square. Move the strip just above the center line, then Filter > Distort > Polar coordinates (with rectangular to polar checked).  If you want the circle closed, crop the square canvas fills the full width of the image.

  • Using the crop tool in Lightroom 5 I can only move and crop my photos from the top. Am I doing something wrong?

I am new to Lightroom 5 and find I cannot crop my photos as easily as I did in iPhoto. I would like to be able to drag them if I choose a custom size or crop them from the bottom as well as from the top but my two sided arrow disappears when I work at the bottom of the photo. Am I doing something wrong?

I would suggest you trash the prefs.
    Quit Lightroom
Launch Finder and find the user Library by clicking the Go menu whilst holding down the Optn (alt) key (n.b. the library is hidden until you press the optn key) and inside the Library folder select the preferences folder. Then trash the following file:
    com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist
    Then re-launch Lightroom
It’s then worth clearing each cache. Go to the top menu bar:
Lightroom >> Preferences >> File Handling (tab)
Click the Purge Cache button under Camera Raw Cache Settings; then click the Purge Cache button under Video Cache Settings. Finally click OK.

  • Why can't I reduce size of PDF created from multiple JPEGs?

    Hi,
Using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0, I combined a bunch of JPEGs and turned them into a PDF. Because the resulting PDF was very large, I tried various Adobe tools to create a smaller version. However, nothing worked.
Am I missing something? Or is it simply impossible to shrink the size of a PDF when it's created from JPEGs?
    Many thanks for your help.

Unless you use size reduction on the images, you are not going to do much better than the JPegs themselves, that is unless the JPegs used no compression at all. There are limits to compression and you have probably reached it.
Using Reduce File Size, you can usually reduce the size, but you will generally be reducing the resolution as well. If that is desired, you might find reducing the size of the graphics in a dedicated graphics package might be a better choice, followed by creating the PDF.
