Crop Against subject, removing background?

I need to paste this column on a colored background, but the rectangular border of the canvas around the column is white, so the pasted overlay shows a white rectangle instead of just the column.  How do I remove the rectangular background, so that I am left with just the column that when I paste it on the colored background only the column will be visible?
I tried using the Magic Wand, which makes a selection around the column, but I don't know what to do next...or if this is indeed the correct tool for the job.
This is a process I never learned using PSE8.  Thank you for your help!

My first choice would be the quick select tool. Wand, however, should also do the job.
1. I'd select the white background around the column as it will be the easiest to select.
2. To get the column selected, go to the menu bar and click Select<Invert Selection. Now, the column is selected.
3. With your selection active, go to the menu bar and click Select<Refine Edge. Use the the sliders in Refine Edge to modify the selection if needed.
4. After you are happy with the selection, press ctrl + J if on a PC or cmd + J if on a Mac. This command will lift a copy of the selected object (the column) onto it's own layer.
5. Click the background layer eye in the layer's palette to make the original column image invisible. Once this is accomplished, you should see the column over transparency.
6. Now, you can create a blank layer and move it under the column. Fill it with a solid color with the paint bucket. (Alternately, you could create a solid color fill adjustment layer and set it to the desired color. You could have also added a pattern or inserted a new background).
Note: When an image is dragged or copied into another document it adopts that document's resolution. When images differ in resolution, they shrink or enlarge when they attempt to match that resolution.
6a. You can also copy/paste or drag the isolated column layer into another document. (Keep in mind that anything dragged or copied into a document will adopt that document's resolution.)
Note: If you want to keep the document in layers, save the document in a format like PSD that supports layers. JPG does not and will flatten the image...transparency areas will become white.
Optional: If you want to save your column selection, go to the menu bar and click Select<Save Selection.  Name the selection. This will save the selection with the document in an alpha channel. Elements can not access the alpha channel directly so you can not view the selection, however, you can load a saved selection at any time by clicking Select<Load Selection. To preserve this saved selection with the document, the document must be saved in a format such as PSD that supports layers and preserves alpha channels...JPG does not. Any image saved as a JPG will be flattened and the alpha channel with the saved selection will be lost.

  • How do I change the background color to black? I'd like Photoshop's generated web gallery to display photos against a black background.

I can't find a place to change the background to black from white. I'd like Photoshop's automated web gallery feature to show photos against a black background once I open the htm file inside Firefox. I use a Mac with OS 10.6.7 (current) on my 27-in. iMac. Thanks very much

There are often many ways to do things, and c.pfaffenbichler's suggestion above is good.
However, as I'm very fond of Curves, I'd use Image - Adjust - Curves (or Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Curves) myself, and pull the black point of the blue curve up.

  • How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the file size is reduced?

How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the total file size is reduced?
When I use the "Crop" function, the cropped data still remains in the file and there is no reduction in file size. I need a way to truly crop a PDF using Acrobat software.

When you export, try to get the full file path or else you will have to do a lot of manual searching.
If you downloaded the picture from Messages, the picture is stored in your User Library/Messages. to make your User Library visible, hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Newbie question: Why is "learn sound model" greyed out when trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display?

I am trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display. The first edit on a new file, this process works fine:
    1. use brush to cover sound
    2. right click, learn sound model
    3. effects/noise-reduction-restoration/Sound Remover
The next time I try to remove another sound in the file, "learn sound model" is greyed out. I have to close the file and reopen to be able to make another edit. What on earth is going on? Can it only learn one sound model or something?
I'm a newbie, so thanks in advance for your advice!

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

Select all the clips with a key, right click, and select remove effects. This will remove all the effects for those clips so you will loose any colour correcting or other changes you might have done.

  • How to remove background hiss?

What options do I have for removing background noise/hiss in iMovie '09? I used the standard microphone of an HD camcorder and as you might guess there is a lot of ambient noise that I would like to try to remove.

Well, I answered my own question.
You cannot do this within iMovie. Instead you have to export the audio and then run it through another application which is what I did using Audacity. I exported the audio to a .wav file and imported into Audacity. With Audacity, you can sample a bit of audio where no one is speaking using the "Remove Noise..." filter and then apply that filter to a selected section of audio. There's lots of other things you can do with Audacity but all I needed was removing background his and amplifying a few other sections of audio where kids were speaking to softly. It worked great! Once finished with Audacity, I exported from Audacity back to a .wav file format. Then I imported that hiss-free audio track into iTunes which then made it available in iMovie. Before dragging the full hiss-free audio clip into my movie project I first muted the existing full-of-hiss audio track. Because the audio tracks were the same length, it all lined up perfectly.

  • Instant alpha feature not available with Photos (want to remove background)

    Hello,
I have to make some pictures better and for that remove background that is roughly uniform. For that i'm used to use "instant alpha" feature, but it appears to be no more available neither in Photos and Preview. Funny thing is instant alpha remains available with Pages.
Do i miss something with Photos, or is it a better way to remove background with OS X Yosemite?
    Thank's for your help,
    Marc

Still is. Enable the toolbar and be sure you're using a formal that supports transparency - i.e. Not Jpeg
TD - btw, you can use the markup tools in Preview, if you open a JPEG: See for  example the marching ants outline in this screenshot:
Preview will now prompt to convert the document to png - we don't have to do it, before opening in Preview.

  • Last night suddenly when I right-click-view-images in firefox, they appear centered and against a black background. It's usually meant to be a white background and the image appearing at top left. How to revert it?

I'm having trouble with something in firefox, it's quite minor but still bugs me. Last night suddenly when I right-click-view-images in firefox, they appear centered and against a black background. It's usually meant to be a white background and the image appearing at top left. I can't remember what I did to change this if it's my fault; if someone knows how to revert it I'd be thankful.

cor-el : thanks for the pointers! I wish the solution isn't an add-on every time ... if such long-standing behaviour is going to change, the least that could be done is put in an about:config option to get back the old behaviour.

  • Remove background from Smart Build images

    Hi,
I've just started creating my first project with Keynote, and so far it's terrific. The question I have is, is it possible to use the alpha tool, or something similar to remove backgrounds from images that I'm using for a smart builds effect.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Welcome to the discussions, Decaffeinated1.
The problem you're seeing is specifically with how Keynote copies images. Neither Pages nor Numbers has this problem. The problem and the solution is described here.
    http://www.keynoteuser.com/news/?p=256
Basically, your choice is to copy through Pages or Numbers (or iWeb) OR to copy another object which will force Keynote to adhere to the transparency set with Instant Alpha.

  • Having difficulty using quick selection tools to remove background form images. Any help appreciated

    Hello All,
I am trying to remove background from images using the 3 different selection tools.  I start off fine, but ultimately the entire images keeps getting grabbed which ever tool I am using.  It is easier if you are using a pro version of photoshop and not any of the elements versions?  I have elements 11.
    Thanks

So much depends on the image itself to determine which tool is most appropriate. Another tool to try is the selection brush, where you literally paint in what you want to select.
