Crop Aspect Ratio Lock fails

Lightroom Crop aspect ratio lock no longer remembers the last setting. Everytime it is unlocked. Annoying. Is this a bug in the new version? or is there some new way to define the default state?

an interesting, I think I found the answer on my own
if you hit 'r' for crop, 'a' to toggle aspect ratio lock, then ENTER to apply the crop LR will not remember the apect-ratio lock setting.
You can force it to remember by hitting 'r', toggling the state with 'a', then hitting 'r' again to close the crop tool.
apparently ENTER fails to apply the crop and SAVE the new default state (lock/unlocked)

  • Locking / unlocking crop aspect ratio lock

I  somehow am missing the magic; I know that one can click on the Develop module's lock to constrain an aspect ratio or to allow free cropping. But how can I set it by default not to be locked? In version 2, I seem to recall that it would end up with a different default for a while till I did something unknown to switch the default. So far in LR 3 beta and LR 3 itself, it always seems to be in locked mode. Thanks for any insight I am missing!

Thanks, Hamish, for your kind posting. I am indeed aware that the padlock visually informs about the locking status. I would just like to be able to set a preference to always leave that padlock open, or perhaps leave it as I last set it. Thanks!

  • Crop Aspect Ratio, width, height, resolution locks up

I am running PSE6 on an XP PC platform.
This anomaly happens about 75% of the time.
After processing a batch of raw images in Camera Raw, highlighting them and clicking on Open Image to open the converted images in PSE, I sometimes find I cannot open the Crop Aspect Ratio selection drop-down box.  Nor can I type in changes to Width, Height, and Resolution fields--I can, however change the values by using the sliders that appear when I mouseover the Width, Height or Resolution titles, but even that's limited--whatever is to the right of the decimal point remains unchanged.
I've also experienced this Crop "lock-out" when just opening JPEG/TIFF/PSD images directly from the image file folder.
The only way I have found to clear this anomaly has been to close and reopen PSE.  Today, for the first time, that didn't fix the problem.  It came up with Crop locked up.
Has anyone else run into this?  If so, what, if any, solution is there?
    Thanks,
    dale

First try clicking the little arrow at the far left of the options bar and choosing reset tool. If that doesn't do it, quit the editor, then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift. Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Synchronizing crop aspect ratio

Using Windows and Lightroom 5.5, I'm no longer able to synchronize a crop aspect
ratio of 2:3 across a series of images.  All the other settings I use are synchronized,
but crop aspect keeps reverting to "Original".
I've tried setting it Quick Develop and in Develop.  It's worked before, but not now.

  • Aspect ratio lock / gradient tool / brush /  doesn't remember status

    hello,
why do i always have to tell the aspect ratio lock 1023429384 times to lock itself until it remembers it's status?
it's the same with the brush or gradient tool. it remembers only it's previous status which is kind of total nonsense and annoying.
    what am i doing wrong?
    thank you!
    geerd

    Frustrating isn't the word.
I reported this through a previous post (much the same as you are experiencing).
    crop not keeping to ratio
It was ok in LR3 and is ok in LR5 (I think)
so they have fixed the bug, but where does that leave the LR4.4 users ??
    Upgrade to LR5 ?
Surely there should be a LR4.4 bug fix that can be downloaded instead of yet another purchase to upgrade.

  • What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem.  There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out.  Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

  • Defined crop aspect ratios work only in landscape mode (LR2.1) (Mac, Win)

When I try to use pre-defined or user-defined crop aspect ratios, e.g., 5x7, on a picture in portrait mode, the crop always goes into landscape mode. This makes no sense; PS doesn't do that.
As an interim solution I have been rotating my portrait pictures 90 degrees into landscape orientation just to get the cropping done, and then rotating them back to portrait, but my neck is beginning to hurt. What is the correct method for cropping in portrait mode using pre-defined aspect ratios?

The method I use is to set the ratio, then do not drag from the corner; plop the crop tool inside the edges and draw as you would in PS. Then adjust via edges, corners, etc.

  • Cropping aspect ratio changes randomly

Each time I crop a new image, the aspect ratio seems to change randomly. Sometimes it will pop up as "Do Not Constrain." Sometimes it will appear as 4x5. Or 2x3. Etc. You get the idea. I have no idea why it's changing. It's very disruptive to the workflow. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
I encounter the issue on both my MacBook Pro and my iMac.

    Thanks, Stan.
I just posted a draft video on Youtube for a client last night.  Not sure if viewing a clip of what I see will help you but I suspect it will.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_hzhCeCGR0
If you go to about 4:34 in the clip you'll see it change over to a different aspect ratio.
This sequence was exported directly from PPro CS4 to FLV.  The FLV file was uploaded to Youtube.
I'm editing this morning and just came across this same issue again.
I'm amazed that none of my clients have mentioned it yet.  Of course, I'm not making Hollywood movies - these are just short videos people send out to college coaches.
    Thanks,

  • How to check for different crop aspect ratios

The problem I'm having is that I have hundreds of images that I need to send to a photo print lab. Before sending off my images I have to make sure they all will fit correctly for 8x10 prints (5:4 aspect ratio) and other ratios but I need to keep them cropped in my camera's default 3:2 aspect ratio for people who want to buy 4x6 prints.
So what I do when I open all my images in Bridge's Camera RAW browser is fit and crop any images that need cropping but using the 3:2 aspect ratio. I then need to check to see if my crop will work as an 8x10 crop picture so that nobody's heads are cut off, etc. The problem Bridge is giving me is that when I crop the first time it doesn't allow me to check another crop without losing the original first crop. For example, I do my first crop as an 3:2 aspect ratio and then when I click on 5:4 to check for 8x10 prints it resizes the crop area which lets me check the crop for 5:4 but when I go back to 3:2 it doesn't go back to the original crop so I have recrop the original crop from memory. Is there any way to solve this problem? Basically crop it twice without loosing the first crop so that I can go back.
Also is there any way to quickly click on all aspect ratios like 5x7, 8x10, etc and have the crop centered in the image so that I can quickly check if anything is cut off? My lab is a high volume automated photo lab so they crop by using the center of each picture and I can only give them one image per person. Most of my images don't need cropping because I try to do it in camera but I have to check to see if they will fit for other crop sizes. Currently Bridge makes me create the crop size manually and then visually center the crop over my image. I would prefer quick buttons that when clicked on will show me what the crop will look like in different crop ratios. Is there anyway to do that?
Thanks for any help you can give me

You might want to try this in Adobe Lightroom (it uses the same Camera Raw
    engine as PS and Bridge).
In the develop mode you can use the crop tool with presets and custom
options that works faster and has an easier and better history tool to
retrieve your original crop setting than Camera raw in Bridge and PS has to
    offer.
I would prefer quick buttons that when clicked on will show me what the crop
will look like in different crop ratios. Is there anyway to do that?

  • Where are crop aspect ratio settings stored?

I have created a few custom aspect ratio settings in the develop module crop tool that I would like to get rid of. These pop up in the bottom section of the "Aspect" popup window right under "Custom". I would like to know of a way to clean this up a bit.

I don't think it's possible - at least not without major surgery.
This has been commented on in previous versions.
I can't think of any other S/W where the user can enter info, and then no way of clearing it.

  • Cropping, aspect ratio

most of my crops are set for custom.  i want an 8x10 print.  if i change the aspect ratio from custom to 4.5/8x10 it screws up my crop completely.  that means that i cannot upload to an online website, be printed automatically and have it come out the way it want.
but can that custom crop image be printed 8x10 manually?

i may have just answered my own ?
i went into the print module of LR and checked each of my images and then printed one.  the result was my custom crop on an 8x10 sheet of paper with 1 3/4 inch borders top and bottom and 1/4 inch borders on each side.
am new to the digital printing game.  without matting it does looks sort of weird. ideally am i supposed to be aiming for equal borders all the way around?
i suppose that you would have to have it custom matted to make it look normal.

  • Changing cropping aspect ratio

    Hi all;
I want to crop a picture not using a standard aspect ratio.
(ie want to change the width (or height) without the other changing.
    Any thoughts please.
    Thanks Mark

    Mark,
set the crop style to "Custom" or to "Do not constrain". Then you can change one dimension without the other dimension changing too.

  • Rotate Crop Aspect Ratio Help LR3

I know that i am missing something totally easy here...but none the less I cant figure it out.  How do I use the crop aspect change short cut key (x) without flagging my photos?
I have made sure that I am in crop mode.  When I hit the x key it flags the photo to discard.
    Thanks for your help!

    Thank you Hal!

  • Crop - Aspect Ratio Drop Down Window

I was watching a tutorial (which I accidentally sign out of) and my drop down menu did not look the same as on the tutorial and I think I have the same PS version.  The video was CS6 and I have CC.  One of the things that was missing was Size and Resolution and whatever is directly above or below that.  I think there may have been a few other things as well.

If you look at the top two options of the drop down, you will see one is ratio that is where you can type in a size like 1024x768 and that will lock the ratio so you can drag the crop up or down locked at that ratio.
The other is widthxheightxresolution. Most of the time you can type in the size and leave the resolution blank, especially when you do not want photoshop to alter the resolution.
Next on the list is a set of preset for setting the ratio Then is a list of presets for setting the size and the resolution. As you can see by that list you can type in pixels or inches for the size. If photoshop is set to a default of one or the other, you can type in the other without changing the default.
Ex. if the default is pixels, you can type in 6in or 6". If the default is inches you can type in 120px.
To change the default, the easiest way is to turn on the rulers and right click in the top left corner where the two rulers meet. A menu will pop up with a list of size types that will then be reflected in the rulers. Therefore with rulers turned on, you know right away what size type is the default.
OK, lets see where I left off -  Yep the drop down menu After the presets for ratio and sizes is a place to see any presets that you created, as shown in the previous post I created one for Facebook.
And finally options for saving and deleting presets.
I think once you play with the crop tool for awhile, you will see that it is an extremely simple tool to use. As with any tool, the more you use it, the easier it is to remember what it can and cannot do.
When learning photoshop, don't take all tutorials literally. Photoshop like most programs have more than one way to accomplish the same thing. It is the end result you are after, not the process of getting there. Some tools maybe faster, others maybe more accurate, it is up to you to decide what is the best approach to get the end result.
Keep in mind, most artist usually say, when they are done, it is still not done. After all, they or we are our own worst critic.

  • Crop tool Aspect Ratios

I have question regarding the Aspect Ratios of the crop overlay tool. Lr comes with a number of crop aspect ratios - for example 5x7, 16x9 and 16X10; where 5 and 16 apply to the width, and 7, 9 and 10 apply to the height. There does not seem to be a way of creating customer aspect ratios like 7x5, 9x16 or 10x16. If i try creating 9x16 Lr, says it 16x9 and does nothing.
Is this by design? Am I missing something?

    dj_paige wrote:
    Just one more question about this: why do 4x3, 16x9 and 16x10, default to 1024 x 768 pixels, 1920 x 1080 pixels and 1280 x 800 pixels? I have enough pixels to do a 16x9 crop with 6016x3384 pixels.
I am skeptical of this statement. When you select 4x3, this means a 4x3 aspect ratio, and not a specific number of pixels
Fully agree with you but this how my crop aspect ratios look like; I can assure you that if select 16x9 it automatically defaults to 1920 to 1080 pixels. I am assuming that the custom ratios are below "Enter Custom ...".
