Crop / constrain feature in iPhoto

I'm shooting hi res 18mp images on a Canon 550d SLR in both RAW & JPEG. I understand Canon DSR's use an image aspect ratio of 3:2 which I understand (please correct me) magnifies to say 6 x4, 12 x 8, 24 x 16 etc without loss of picture area.
My question relates to the crop / constrain feature in iPhoto.
Suppose I shoot an image, edit it and then decide I want to crop the photo.
Please can an expert help me with the workflow.  Is it:
1. Crop the picture to desired state
2. then select constrain feature to desired image size?
I am a little unclear on the term constrain.  Does this means it crops the image but doesn't lose any of the original image aspect?  For example a cropeed image constrained at 6 x 4 or say 10 x 8 would then print perfectly at that aspect ration if taken to a printing kiosk.
I want to edit the picture to best quality in iPhoto and then e-mail it to the recipient who would then print it.  I guess if I send them a 6 x 4 and they enlarge to 7 x 5 then there will be a loss of image?
Please can anyone clarify my understanding and help define the workflow process.  Thank you.

When you crop iPhotos provides you with predetermined Constrain or aspect ratio options.  The workflow is:
1 - in the edit mode click on the Crop button.
2 - select the Constrain aspect ratio in the drop down menu.
3 - adjust the constrain window in the edit mode to fit your needs.
4 - clik the Done button.
If you plan on having multiple sizes of an image printed you should make multiple copies and provide a properly cropped image for each size. One way to to that is:
1 - crop to size A.
2 - export to a folder on the Desktop via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  with Size=Current and Quality=High or Max.
3 - recrop to size B.
4 - repeat step 2.
Always check the exported files with an app like Preview to make sure they are what you want before taking in to have printed.

  • Where's the toolbox and other editing features in iPhoto?

    Hello!
When I select a photo to edit on my iPad Air in iPhoto, it only has "rotate", "enhance", "filter" and "crop" at the bottom of the screen.  I do not see the toolbox or other editing features such as the "brushes" or the "rotate compass".  How can I see the other editing features on iPhoto?  Thanks for the help!

    And the Photos.app:

  • Some of the new features of iPhoto 8 (09)

The following are some of the new features of iPhoto 8 that are not publicized on the Apple iPHoto site:
1 - iPhoto 8 now will open directly the library that you double click on instead of opening the last opened library.
2 - it has a new option in the rebuild window, *Rebuild Library Database from automatic backup*. With luck that might just make the need for my Automator workflow to backup the Library6.iPhoto database file obsolete. Let's hope so.
3 - all MobileMe galleries published will automatically be included in all iPhoto Libraries.
4 - when you move your cursor over a thumbnail image there is a small "i" in the lower right hand corner that, when clicked on, opens the Info window for that photo. There you can assign a location via Google.
5 - upon launching iPhoto with the Option key depressed a window will open that will list all iPhoto libraries on your boot drive and all connected HDs except that used for Time Machine. It will also list any folder containing a Library6.iPhoto file. So if you have a backup copy of the dB file in a folder somewhere on your HD that folder will be displayed in the list of available libraries to open.
As a general note I've found that iPhoto Library Manager will work with iPhoto 8 (09) as far as selecting the library to open. I haven't tested the copy, merge or rebuild features as yet.
That's about I've come across in the short time I've been experimenting with it. *By far the best new feature IMO is No.2 above.*

  • The slideshow feature in iphoto 9.5.1 not working properly

The slideshow feature in iphoto 9.5.1,does not start at the first slide no matter what I do

You're running the slideshow directly from an album or an Event, correct.  This has been a problem for a number of users and there's not been a fix discovered.
Many found that creating the slideshow in the slideshow mode will eliminate that problem.
    Give us details.

  • Places feature in iPhoto '09 superrr slow! Help!

I've got a very big problem. Places feature in iPhoto 09 is so slow. The thing is that I thought that this problem was caused by slow computer.... I previouslu owned iMac Core Duo. But now I bought the newest one... Alu Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz... And I'm still occuring this problem? Is it possible that there is some error with my library? I exported it from my previous system and selected it on my new Mac when I was starting iPhoto for the first time (with alt button). Can anyone help me? I would be grateful.

Just a few questions to get us started: When you say that you exported your library from your previous system did you copy/transfer the whole of the folder iPhoto Library to the new system without making any modifications to it? How many photos have you in your library? Are you using the same version of iPhoto? You might try some of the rebuild option available when restarting iPhoto while holding down alt and cmd.

  • I cropped a photo in iphoto. It is only cropped when you double click.

I cropped a photo in iphoto.  In events it is showing the original photo. When I double click on the photo then it shows me the cropped version. I would like to see only the cropped version and delete permanantly the original version or at least not have to look at it. Help please.

How did you crop this photo? The symptom are consistant with your using a third party program and modifying the photo within the iPhoto library - which you must never do.
in iPhoto there is no way to "delete the original" version - iPhoto is a DAM (Digital Asset Manager) and as such always maintains the original, the digital negative

I cannot select the shuffle feature in Iphoto slideshow.  Can some one help?

I would like to use an external monitor (plasma tv) with my MacBook Pro also, which has a resolution 1365x768 - a resolution which is not available under the Display Preferences. I can use the plasma at a 4:3 radio resolution, but I don't see ANY 16:9 radio resolutions available.
Have you found a solution to this yet?

  • Feature Request - Iphoto cropping issue

I don't know how to request features officially, but I've seen a few of these threads on this forum. If someone knows how to make an official request, please let me know.
I am a professional photographer who has to edit thousands of photographs at a time. For the straightening and cropping portion of my workflow, I use iPhoto. Anytime I switch between cropping and straightening from one photograph to the next, the size constrain dropdown box on the cropping tool gets reset, and I have to choose 4x6 again. Having to reset this dropdown to 4x6 thousands of times is very time consuming.
If I crop one photograph at 4x6 and move to the next, it stays at 4x6. If I crop the first, move on and straighten the second, I then have to choose 4x6 again in the cropping tool.
Whoever has the ability to make this happen, PLEASE give me an option of choosing a default cropping constraint of 4x6 or 8x10 or whatever and have it stay the size I choose until I change it. Not having the crop tool stay at whatever size I choose when editing photographs is very, very tedious.

I appreciate your point, but $100 software for straightening and cropping photographs is overkill, especially considering iPhoto had the capability to do what I'm asking three versions ago and it was removed.
I do my editing in other programs and don't wish to pay for something when I won't use 98% of it.

  • Where can I find out how to use the Journals feature in iPhoto for iPhone

I am new to Apple Support Communities. Not sure if this is the place that will help me work with Journals. Is there a manual or video which helps with teaching the features of the Journals application and how to use them? I am stuck knowing how to move around the images and changing the page set-up, among other perplexing features.

  • The slideshow feature in iPhoto: Can we record or create a file of it?

one month into my first Mac and I keep get blowing away by its features. Today I started using the iPhoto and imported all my pictures from my pc into it.
    WOW
from a dry, dumb, still pictures, using the iPhoto's slideshow tool, I can now have a slideshow so professional that it makes me look like a hot shot director... what with the music and all that as the slideshow runs.
    BUT
Can I convert the slideshow into a video file or something so I can upload it on my blog?
PLEASE PLEASE SAY IT IS POSSIBLE AND easy to do this...
(sorry for the caps... am too excited by seeing the slideshow effects in iPhoto)

That's very simple...Under "file" choose Export. Choose the resolution/screen size, hit ok. Save to your desktop or somewhere else, then hit export button. A Quicktime movie will be produced and you're set and ready to put this moviejust about anywhere. Good luck.

  • Missing features on iPhoto for iOS 7

After the announcement of redesigned apple apps, I immediately downloaded the new iPhoto for iOS.
Aesthetically, this new iphoto is more clutter free than the previous version. However, a lot of very important features on the previos version is missing.
    1. Creating facebook folder within the app is missing
    2. Tagging people within the app and the option to tag them in all photos to be uploaded
    3. Creating description within the app
    4. Batch uploads are now limited to 10
A lot of users are using iPhoto because of these featured aside from it's editing prowess. So please Apple! Add these missing features again!

  • Cropped Photos Not Viewable (iPhoto 6.06)

When I open iPhoto, I can see all of the photo thumbnails. My titles and ratings are still displayed. When I double-click on any photo that has been cropped or otherwise edited, the photo will appear in the Edit Window for a split second, then a large grey square appears with an exclamation point inside it. The photo's information continues to show in the information pane on the left. This only happens with photos that have been edited. Photos that have not been altered, are still viewable in the Edit Window.
    Possible Causes:
I recently upgraded to Leopard. However, when I upgraded to Leopard on my work laptop, all of my photos were still viewable. I really don't think this should have caused the problem.
I also recently uploaded some photos from my work laptop onto my iDisk and then dragged them into my iPhoto Library on my home computer. I did not realize at the time that I am on iPhoto 7 at work. Could this have made a difference?
    What I've tried:
Rebuilding my Photo Library (hold down command-option while launching iPhoto), then selecting...well, I've selected all four options at different times.
Going into the Photos folder and moving the Modified photos into the Originals folder.
Using my last backup (from four days ago), and dragging the Library6.iPhoto file to the iPhoto Library folder on my hard drive.
Taking the folder that I dragged from my iDisk and removing it from my iPhoto Library.
None of these have worked. Help?
    Thanks!

    maybeshark
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
If you have made changes in the iPhoto Library Folder then, can you undo them? Return things exactly to the way they were? If you can and this stil does not work, then you have a damaged library file.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. As this hasn't worked, is suggests that the damage predates the back up.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • "Create New Film Roll" feature in iPhoto

The "Create New Film Roll" feature is no longer available. It is continuously grayed out. Has anyone experienced this before? And if so, how did you correct the problem?

You'll be more likely to get a quick and applicable answer if you ask in the iPhoto forums rather than here in the iTunes forum.
    Good luck.
