  • Enlarged bounding box around imported vector images (InDesign/Illustrator CC 2014)

    Hi all, I've searched the forum for an answer but can't seem to find one. Hopefully someone can help.
    Ever since my upgrade to CC2014, whenever I import a vector image from Illustrator into InDesign, the image comes in with an expanded bounding box. Unlike in the old days (i.e., the moment before I upgraded), when the bounding box would exactly enclose my image with no extra white space on any of the sides.
    Sometimes the bounding box is small and sometimes it's gigantic. I cannot determine any rhyme or reason why it varies. Sometimes it's wider on the sides than on the top/bottom. Other times it's gigantic on one side but not the others. Basically, it's all over the place with no consistency that I can determine.
    I find it incredibly visually distracting to have these weird-sized bounding boxes around my art, and it sucks to have to constantly resize them on every imported image.
    I promise there are no guides, stray points, etc. in the Illustrator files. There is absolutely nothing "invisible yet there" that would create these expanded bounding boxes.
    Two samples are below.
    Note on this first one that the bounding box is wider at the right than the left.
    On this second sample, note that the bounding box is gigantic in general, but especially at the top, and it's smaller on the sides/bottom. Huh?
    Any ideas? I desperately want this to stop. Just want a bounding box that exactly encloses my artwork after I import it.
    Thank you for your ideas or suggestions,
    Laurie

    Hi Bob, thanks very much for this info. I figured there was a checkbox hidden somewhere...
    I tried all of the cropping options and although it seems like this would be a fix, it's unfortunately not fully resolving the issue.
    The option that gets me closest is "crop to art." However, as you can see from the sample below, there's still a pretty large gap at the bottom, as well as a small one at the left side. (The top and right actually are cropped to the art, as requested.)
    Do you have any other suggestions of things I can try? Or does anyone else have any ideas?
    Thanks again,
    Laurie

  • Crop Area Tool - Illustrator CS3 (javascript)

    Can Javascript use the Crop Area Tool in Illustrator CS3?
    I am trying to create a crop area around the selected artwork.
    I can select the artwork (path object). Then I want to use the preset: crop to selected artwork. Then save, and repeat for next file.
    Is this possible using javascript?

    I don't know how far you have been up to with your code. I never really cropped the artwork by code, I only placed the crop marks using this code:
    aiDocRef.cropBox = [-bld, docH+bld, docW+bld, -bld];
    You could use the bounds of the selected graphics instead.
    Since I've never scripted the printing in Ai, I cannot tell you how to crop while printing, but this might get you started. In CS4 they introduced multiple artboards, which requires different code for cropping, as far as I can see from the ref PDF.
    cheers,
    m.

  • Right-click when using pen tool (Illustrator CC 2014)

    Am I imagining it or did I used to be able to right-click to stop drawing with the pen tool?
    How can I do this in Illustrator CC 2014 as it seems a bit frustrating to have to keep pressing P.
    Any suggestions gratefully received

    Thanks Jacob,
    Nothing generally, it just seemed natural to me, sort of like lifting the pen off the paper at the end of a line.
    Also, I am usually holding a glass of wine with the other hand

  • Cropped Image in Illustrator

    I am trying to place an .eps image on an InDesign document, however, the blue bounding box in Illustrator is cropping part of the image. I can see the full image in Illustrator. Maybe the bounding box is too close to the edge of the logo? Below is the what it looks like when I place it in InDesign and what it looks like in Illustrator. Is there a way I can include the missing part of the image? I am not the creator of the logo and received it from another company. Thank you!

    I tried some fitting options and it didn't seem to work. This is what it looks like if I expand the bounding box in InDesign

  • Masked images in Illustrator

    My illustrator cs4 file had a placed image that was masked (just cropped with a rectangle)..  When the file came into FC, there was no image at all.
    How do I set up a cropped image in Illustrator that I can bring into FC, cropped?

    Here's the deal with the imported PNG. On import we use an Illustrator CS4 library to convert to FXG, then merge the FXG into the MXML of your project. While our current CS4 library supports incoming .psd, .jpeg, .tiff and other formats, it doesn't support PNG. So the PNG is dropped. This is noted in the beta release notes under the Illustrator import section, and will be fixed when we integrate a newer version of the library next month.
    With regard to animating the masked image and keeping SWF sizes to a minimum.. fortunately and unfortunately, the masking happens at runtime. In this case – not a great solution. However what's already on the table for performance reasons is offering an option to crop Photoshop Shape layers to their masked boundaries on import. We may be able to leverage some of this code to crop masked items on Illustrator import as well. I'll check into it and talk to a couple of our developers.

  • Cropping Images with Clipping Masks | Learn Illustrator CS6 | Adobe TV

    In this video you will learn a quick and easy method for cropping images in Adobe Illustrator CS6 and CS5. Using clipping masks allows you to retain the area of the image you cropped out as well as modify the clipping path later on.
    http://adobe.ly/V8tW7S

    Is there a way to make a clipping mask for a many-layered image without collapsing all the layers? I'd love to keep my image as is (it's quite complex), I just want to crop the entire thing.
    thanks!

  • Cropping Images with Opacity Masks | Learn Illustrator CS6 | Adobe TV

    In this video you will learn a versatile method for cropping images in Adobe Illustrator CS6 and CS5. Using opacity masks allows you to retain the area of the image you cropped out, modify the clipping path later, and use complex blending modes, transparencies, and knockout groups.
    http://adobe.ly/V8tTZD

    Firstly great tutorial.
    Anyway I initially started a thread in the forums which lead me here regarding the use of opacity masks, I'm having real problems finding a solution to my specific problem.
    I've got 2 issues I'm trying to solve, the first is how do I show just a portion an object above another even though it sits in a layer behind.
    The second is I have an object with a linear gradient applied and I want to add yet another gradient just to a certain part of that object in order to make it fade out in a certain way.
    I've spent hours pouring through the help topics but nothing seems to fit my exact problem, sorry for asking questions here but I'm really stumped and I think an opacity mask would do the trick, I'm just not sure how to execute it.
    Thanks heaps.

  • Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 - Custom Crop Marks?

    Hello all,
    I've been looking for a solution to this problem for some time now, and am hoping to find help here!!
    Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 - want to be able to customize how crop marks are created through Object>Create Trim Marks.  Does anyone know of any plugins that could achieve this?  Manually shrinking and shifting the crop marks takes too much time...
    Thanks in advance to any contributors!

    I know of no plugins for this.
    The fastest way we found was to use Libraries.
    1. Make one set of trim marks and save it in the library.
    2. On a new document, make a box the trim size of your doc.
    3. Snap guides to the 4 edges of the box.
    4. Drag out the crop marks (double, triple, with registration marks, or whatever you created in your original Library item).
    5. Snap each of four mark sets to the guide corners.
    Voila.

  • Selection tool doesnt work in illustrator cc 2014

    selection tool doesnt work in illustrator cc 2014.

    Hi officeisbig,
    While we are working on a solution, if you can upgrade os to 10.9, the issue should get fixed.

  • Illustrator CC 2014 tools won't expand on non-touch screens

    In Illustrator CC 2014.1.1 (18.1.1) the tools in the tool panel won't expand when the main Illustrator window is not on a touch screen. I am using the regular interface, not the touch interface.
    I have three monitors, one of which is a touch screen. If I move the main Illustrator window onto the touch panel then the tools all work as normal.  As soon as the Illustrator window is on another monitor, it is impossible to expand any of the tools that normally roll out to reveal extra tools.  This has been driving me crazy for a month, and it was only today I discovered what was causing it.
    Even if the tools aren't on the touch panel, they still work okay so long as the main window IS on the touch panel. Conversely if I move the tools to the touch panel but keep the main window on a non-touch panel, I can make them expand on the touch panel but ONLY with a finger touch and not with the mouse.
    This is obviously a programming bug, but I have in case tried resetting my settings several times (and disabling settings sync).  Illustrator CC (non-2014) still works fine, as do the pop-out tools in InDesign CC 2014.  Prior to patching to 18.1.1 this worked fine in Illustrator CC 2014 too.
    I am using Windows 8.1.

    I reset the preference file more than once, just to be sure - has no effect.
    As Monika says, you can ALT+click tools to cycle through them, but this is only a temporary solution and it would be good if the software could be fixed. It's very frustrating not being able to easily change to most tools from the UI. For now I have put my most-used tools on a custom tool bar instead.

  • Illustrator CC 2014 - save for web cuts off image

    In Illustrator CC 2014 when I save a vector image with a thick stroke (e.g. 20pt) while using save for web and clipping to the image (so not selecting clip to artboard) and scaling to e.g. 20%, then the edges of the drawing are cut off.
    I'm not completely sure but I think previous versions didn't have this issue.
    If I save the image at 100% no edges are cut off.
    I suppose save for web uses the center of the vector line to determine where to cut off the image if the image is scaled down.
    But it should use the outer 'edge' of the stroke to cut off the image.
    Any ideas to the cause or solution?
    P.S.: Yes, I'm a Windows user ;-)

    I've ticked Edit>Preferences>General>Use Preview Bounds
    That would seem the right way to solve the issue but the problem remains.
    Maybe the origin of the issue isn't because of the centre of the path / artwork size.
    Since there is no problem (with or without "Use Preview Bounds" ticked) using Save for web while scaling at 100% (or higher).
    The clipping only occurs when scaling down.

  • Illustrator CC 2014 - spacebar hand tool shortcut not working, how can I fix this?

    The hand tool is not being temporally activated by the spacebar in Illustrator CC 2014.
    I've restarted, deleted preferences, nothing seems to work.
    I’m pretty sure it was working when I first installed the new version - just stopped for no reason.

    MB&B,
    Item 7) under 5) in this list shows the usual suspects.
    You may also consider trying some of the other options on the list.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.
