Crop in an action, I'm sure it must be easy!
Hi,
I'm going round in circles trying to help a friend who wants an action which opens a file, creates a copy, closes the original, allows him to crop the image then puts a set of adjustment layers on it. I've done it all for except for the crop step and I'm stuck.
I've used File>Crop from "Insert Menu Item", but when I run the action I get an error saying, "Could not complete the command because the selected area is empty". I'd like the action to pause, offer a message saying "Crop now" and then continue after the user has used the Crop tool on the image.
I expect it's something quite simple but I can't see where to go next and any help would be appreciated. We're both using CS5 Standard on Vista 32.

Use the fly-out menu at the upper-right of the ACTIONS panel to Insert Stop with a message. That will insert a step before the selected step that will both stop the action and put up the message you want.
After stopping and doing whatever he wants, when the user hits the play button again it will continue at the step just past the Stop step.

You can neither merge or delete them. Pick one and stop using the other. If they both have purchases associated with them you will have to keep using both.

Straighten & crop in Photoshop action
I must straighten & crop a numer of pics which I would like to do with a ps action. My problem: I cannot place the ruler within an action to get the individually selected angle for straightening. Is there a solution?
You could make the crop and straighten part of the action something like this:
1. Use the insert menu item from the actions panel flyout menu and when the dialog appears,
go to Analysis>Ruler Tool, select it and click ok in the insert menu dialog.
2. To get a pause in the action so you can draw out the ruler tool, use the
Playback Options from the actions panel flyout menu and set to
Pause For and the number of seconds you need to draw out the ruler.
Then use the Playback Options again, set to Accelerated.
3. Draw out the Ruler Tool and select the Straighten button from the tool options bar.

I'm not sure what you mean by downloaded.
* Is the problem with Firefox displaying the page on the screen, and part of the text is off the right side of the screen? If everything is gigantic, your Firefox icon might be set up to start in a low resolution. If only the page content is too big, it could be an issue with Zoom.
* Is the problem with printing the web page, either to paper or PDF? If you use Print Preview and adjust the scaling setting (e.g., change Shrink to fit to something like 90%), perhaps you can get it to work. There are some sites that do not Shrink to fit. -

Yes get 2 other email addresses eg Hotmail and Gmail. Both are free.

Display value instead of key in input field with LOV?
Sorry, this is so basic I'm sure it must be easy but somehow I can't find it in the documentation. The LOCATION table contains a foreign key referencing the CLIMATE table. As well as its primary key, CLIMATE has a column called NAME holding the name of the climate (e.g. temperate, tropical, etc.). The user must be able to update the climate value for the location he is working on. So I have a list of values which looks up possible climate names, the user selects the name he wants and the value gets set in the LOCATION table. That works, but the problem is that the input item displays the key value of the CLIMATE record, and I need it to display the value of NAME instead. Of course I can have another field showing the name, but that is messy, the user doesn't understand the key value and shouldn't have to see it. So how do I make one input field display the NAME, while actually updating the key value from the LOV choice?
ThanksThank you, Joseba. It does help to some extent. Now I have a non-updatable field with the climate name in it, and below that is the magnifying-glass icon that invokes the list of values. I guess that's not bad, and I can put a label next to the magnifying class saying "Click to select climate". So it's better, but still looks very odd compared to updating fields that are in the LOCATION table itself, where it's an updatable field and the maginfying glass is right next to it. Really the user should not have to behave differently just because the database chooses to hold the value that he wants to alter as a reference to another table.
Is there at least a way to put the list of values magnifying-glass next to the field that displays teh value, rather than underneath it? They are all inside a thing called "af:panelFormLayout", and I tried setting MaxColumns to 2 in its properties, but it still won't let me move the list-of-values field alongside the other one.

Access properties of a movie on the timeline
I am trying to buil a project which contains two movie clips and I need to access the properties of clipA from within timeline of clipB.
if the parent property specifes a path to display objects that are above the current display object in the display list hierarchy, which property points to objects that are bellow ?
I´m sure this must be easy to answer. I just can´t seem to figure it out.
Any help would be much appreciated.I'm not sure how to interpret your above/below description, but to access clipA properties from within clipB, assuming they share the same parent timeline...

How to upgrade ID CS4 library to ID CS5
Ok, so I've made the upgrade, but can't seem to move my library of items from a CS4 project to a similar one in CS5.
I'm sure this must be easy but just don't see it.

EddieYou've just discovered one of the reasons I don't use them. Way more trouble than they're worth.
You may well have to open the library in CS4, drag the items to a document, open that document is CS5 and recreate it.
I recommend a collection of snippets to be used with the mini bridge panel. Besides not being version specific, folders can be set up on a network and shared with co-workers.

Removing Autonumbering when importing Word Documents
I am attempting to import a Word document into RoboHelp8 for HTML Help and want to eliminate the numbers used in the Word Heading styles as well as the numbers imported as text in numbered lists. I am much more familiar with the import of FrameMaker files--for which there is an "Ignore autonumbering" option in the style conversion settings. As for Word documents, do I have to manually remove the numbers and fix the formatting in each and every generated topic? I'm sure it must be easier than this--am I doing something wrong?

Perhaps I'm mistaken. I replied to a Kim on the HATT (Help Authoring Tools and Techniques) list on the same issue. As the question seemed the same and someone named Kim asked, I assumed it was you!
Probably wasn't if you aren't sure what HATT is.
Basically here is what I replied with there:
In RoboHelp 8 you have new options with dealing with Word content. The whole dialog is different. Additionally, you used to only be able to
import and you were done. Now you can establish a link between Word and RoboHelp. If Word changes, Bing! RoboHelp alerts you to that little fact. You then bring the changes in and update content.
I'm guessing you have experimented with the different styling and pagination options. One thing that may trip you up is the way lists are
handled. You may need to examine the conversion settings and click the Other category (no, not the other white meat... LOL) Try enabling the Convert Word List options.
Perhaps experiment with the options and see what you get.

That's really surprising.
I know I can use a write-on behavior on a paint stroke but now I realize I can't do it with text. I can use the "hand" option in Live Fonts but the font is just ugly and can't be changed.
I'm trying to keep the font similar to the branding of the client but I guess Motion just can't do it without a lot of labour and expertise I don't have.
I thought for the simplicity it would have been easier.
I guess I'll tell him the Live Font font is sexier and he should go with that.
