Crop or Resize Video Clip???

Hello everyone,
I'm new to iMovie and have been trying to figure out if it's possible to essentially crop a video clip. By crop I don't mean adjust the length of the clip, but actually crop/resize the video frame.
Here's my problem. I transfered some content from an old VHS tape to my DV camera, then imported it into iMovie. The bottom of the frame has a jittery/blurred edge and the right and left sides show a little black, almost like a border. I'd like to be able to crop and scale the video up so that it completely fills the frame and eliminates these unsightly edge problems.
I hope that makes sense.
Any thoughts???
Thank you!
-Rob

Hi Greg,
I hope, you don't take it as personal offense, that I contract you (do I "allways"..?)...- in case, apologize for that!
But
as ONE example: do you see the zilllions of posting "How do I import from dvd-cam/stillcam..."? Your answer would be"Can't be done!" << which is from the makers of iM indeed intended so! ... but, then your mentioned people tell about crappy Macs... So, I copy-'n-paste from my "notes" my standard answer "get for free Streamclip and..."
This is a board; different people, different opinions... some people posting here spend $$$$($) into hard- and software and don't even use the "help" function before posting here - far away from reading manuals, books, doing tutorials etc.pp.-
I totally agree in one point: I'm no technician, nor expert as Karl, Lennart, Matti, David or Dan, my "position" in this forum is more on the far side, for the workarounds, I do like the arcane, silly methods to make the impossible possible.- I'm a Mac user since '86, I experience the Mac as MY dream machine, allowing me to realize my creativity - on a pro level, it is my typewriter (no big specs neccessary) but I cannot spend much money into my hobbies (video, websites)... so I DO need these dirty tricks...
I post my experiences & methods here - it is up to you to share these methods.
or not.
In this case:
the OP has TWO questions: a problem with pic quality, and you (and I) gave him the hint: No Problem at all!
second, you gave the answer "cropping is impossible" - that is wrong. it is not needed, but it is possible, so, maybe in another project, maybe some other reader of this thread has use for such cropping...- the programmer of this plug-in shows examples on his website...-
if I want to take it easy with them, I would post 234times a day RTFM.........;-)

  • Crop and Resize video in AME at the same time !

    Hi everybody
I'm new to Adobe Media Encoder CS4, used to encode with Flash Video Encoder.
It seems that is it impossible with AME CS4 to crop and resize a video at the same time.
In input i have a 1280*720 video, that I first resize to obtain the desired height (300px)
so i obtain a 533*300 video, but when i would like to crop it in the same operation, that's not work, it doesn't keep the height i want (300px)
If I start by cropping my video, i obtain a 538*683 video, but i can't resize after, because the width and height in right panel are in grey, inaccessible.
In Flash Video Encoder (with Flash 8) it was possible to do this 2 operations at the same time, why doesn't this work in AME CS4 ?
(please excuse my poor english ^^)
    Thanx by advance

  • Video Crop and Resize

Not sure if this is a bug but it's frustrating! I'm using the
Mac version of Flash CS3. I set everything up correctly to crop a
video clip (dragging the sliders in the 'Crop and Resize' tab). I
then start the queue etc. The resulting flv has NOT cropped as I
specified?? I get strange sizes, distortions etc. This also happens
by direct import to the stage (embed or external).
Also I find that I need to check the 'Resize Video' check box
even if I don't want to resize the video to get Flash to import at
the correct size of the original! This renders the cropping tool
    useless. Any ideas anyone?

I've since done some tests. The issue appears to be related
to the source video and not the Flash Video Encoder, particularly
the compression format. I have a set of clips at the same size but
the compression formats are different (I checked the movie
properties in QuickTime). Sorenson versions seem to crop and resize
OK, but the DV format doesn't.
At least the Flash side of things are fine.

  • How do I rotate a video clip in iMovie when I am unable to click on the Cropping Button in the Adjust menu?

Can you help me rotate my video clip in iMovie ?  I followed the instructions in the Help menu, but was stuck on Step 3  - after I had selected the entire Clip and then was unable to click  on the "Cropping Button".

Are you in the timeline? You can't access the crop button if the clip is in the browser.

  • Is there a way to crop a video clip after I rotate it?

I rotated a clip due to faulty attachment of my helmet cam.  Is there a way to crop the video clip after rotating it 4 degrees?  I would hate to lose this footage, but I cannot use it as it is.

If your export looks like the screenshot in post 6, then please write your Publish+Share settings in a reply to confirm your present situation.
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    and then what?
    MPEG
    AVCHD
    XAVC-S
    AVi
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
    Image
    Audio
You might only be seeing MPEG, AVCHD, and XAVC-S in the list because the other are hidden from view. You need to use the small scroll bar to the right of the choices to scroll down to the ones beyond XAVC-S.
If you select MPEG and do nothing but accept the first choice of Presets which is NTSC DVD Standard, then you are going to get a 4:3 export. Under those circumstances, you have a 16:9 project setting, then you are going to get the type of result that you are seeing in post 6.
If you are doing that, then look at the MPEG Presets = NTSC DVD Widescreen, do your export, and let us know if all is OK.
Do you have any special receipt requirements for the export? With further information from you, I will help you with the export setting appropriate for your project and maintaining what you are created in the edit area.
    Thanks.

  • DVD SP4 resizes a video clip

    Hi all,
I've created a video clip at custom size of 720x320 to use in DVD menu. I've
    applied it to
drop zone. To my surprise it didn't fit into the menu design. The clip's info in
    DVD SP has
shown a size of 720x536 (it's a PAL project), so DVD SP has resized the clip to
    the PAL native
size automatically! Does anybody know if there is a way to prevent DVD SP of
    doing that?
    Thanks in advance.
    Andrey
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi Audrey - welcome to the discussions.
Try re-sizing that drop zone - DVDSP should maintain the correct aspect ratio for the clip unless you go wildly out of the normal range, in which case it will clip the edges.
The other obvious win would be to composite the entire menu background using FCP or Motion or After Effects and get the footage exactly as you want it before bringing it in to DVDSP.
But no - I don't think you can prevent DVDSP behaving in the way it did for you.

  • WHY is iMovie cropping 640x480 MPEG4 video when I drag clip to project?????

I don't think I am trying to do anything fancy.
My Sanyo camera takes VGA resolution video in MPEG-4. When I start iMovie '09 it asks me if I want to import the clip once I pop the SDRAM card in the USB slot. OK. I import the clip. iMovie checks for stabilization. Fine. After the clip is imported I run it and it looks fine.
I create a project and select standard aspect ratio. I select a clip from the imported video and drag it to the project window. The clip appears but I lose about 30% of the frame area around the frame because it's been cropped by iMovie.
I check HELP and locate the Project Properties... menu item and under "Timing" I set Initial Video (and Photo) placement to "Fit in frame". I click OK and retry placing a new clip in the project - SAME PROBLEM. I test an exported clip and the clipping is really there in the exported video clip.
The control settings in iMovie '09 do not seem to work with cropping control. Is there a rather large bug in iMovie or did I miss something obvious? It's just a 640 x 480 video. I would have thought it would be amongst the most common frame sizes aside from 320 x 240 outside of mobile phone video clips.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Mike

aaaaaah, what a relief! I thought I had unwittingly messed up some weird setting. I have to say iMovie is not really geared to the layman. I would never have guessed zooming had anything to do with stabilization.
AppleMan1958, thank you so much! That fixed it completely!!! Now I can send off my video clip and go to bed!

  • How to crop a video clip for subsequent animation

I have several video clips that I'd like to crop (either with Motion or FCE 3.5) and then animate using Motion, but I'm not sure how to approach the problem.
Specifically, the clips in question are interviews, and my intent is to crop out extra background from them, then have them rotate into view one by one, along with animated pull-quote text, to produce a flowing narrative.  I don't want the full-sized clips to be animated--just the relevant head-centered portions.
I'm a quick learner, so I don't necessarily need a step-by-step solution, but any tips to get me started would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

There are several ways you could do this
-Crop the media (Set the cropping for the source clip, available in the media tab and Inspector.)
-Crop the layer (crop each instance of the clip in the project. Found in the layer properties).
    -Apply a layer mask
    -Apply a matte layer.
If you only need to set the cropping once, I'd recommend the first option.  When you crop the media the center point is always maintained based on the cropping. If you crop using any of the other methods you may have to adjust the anchor point (center) of the layer.

  • How to add a rectangle color frame for the video clips ?

    Hi there,
I have shrink the 3 video clips small enough to fit all 3 of them into 1 screen.
And now I want tomake a border rectangle color frame for these 3 video clips.
Any tips on how I shall start ?
    Thanks & regards
    Cheers

    Ian R. Brown wrote:
I have a feeling it can't be done because the border will probably go round the original full size video.
A workaround would be to use the Custom generator to make a rectangle which you resize and put above the background.
Then put your video you want framed on top of the lot and resize it so that a bit of the coloured Custom generator is showing all the way round.
It's gonna be fiddly but simple enough in theory!
Thanks Ian, that was a good idea.
But my cropped video clip is a video clip being color-keyed (ie my video clip has alpha channel & the background is transparent). So putting a colour image behind the clip does not work because it will be seen through the alpha channel.
    Any tips ?
    Thanks

  • Combine 4 angle shots into 1 video clip

First of all, I am very much a novice in video editing and have yet to try Final Cut Pro X.
I am working on a video project which will film a single subject from 4 different angles:  front, back, left and right.
I would like to create a video clip which shows all 4 angle shots playing at the same time.  Basically the video has 4 quadrants with each quadrant playing one of the angles.
Is this possible to do in Final Cut Pro X?  Can anyone provide references or pointers on how this can be done?
    Thank you.

That's also known as 'Brady Bunch Effect', named after a TV-show's intro, showing 9 people in 9 'frames':
    • get familiar with the crop and transform tools of FCPX:
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0.6/?lang=en-us#verfc8a4713
    • in your case, stack (=not in a row, but over each other) the 4 clips into the timeline
    • resize and replace each clip to any position
Suggestion: aside plain 'grab'n drag', the Info board allows numerical input - which gives each 'frame' its precise same size and position…

  • Adding a video clip

I have a video and I want to add another video clip kind of in the background on top of the original video clip. How can I do that?
    Thanks!

Put the video you want on top on V2. In the view popup on the right at the top of the canvas switch to Image+Wireframe. Grab a corner of the image to resize it. Move the image to reposition it. Drag an edge to rotate it. There's more you can do with the crop and distort tools.

  • Is there a way to "link" 2 video clips?

    Hi,
I have a single 3 minute split screen video scene (in the timeline) that is made of 2 video clips. Can I link this pair of video clips?
It would make resizing easier if I only had to scale a single wire frame, instead of having to try to resize both clips to match each other for nesting?

    Hi Michel,
My S1 has several clips it it. I am dividing my finished video into 4 equal sections on the screen, for the entire video, and there are lots of tracks in the timeline now.
If I move S1 into S2 with just the 2 tracks I want active, it transfers perfectly as a single track.
Here is the problem. When I return to S1 and make active other tracks, the other tracks also become active in S2, overwriting the 2 tracks I want linked. Or, if I deactivate the tracks in S1, the timeline is S2 still shows the track in the timeline but blacks the screen out.
I want to be able to make 2 video clips into a single track for easier editing in S1, is that possible?
    Thanks for your help,

  • Easy Question about resizing video

I searched 'Resizing Video' and there was too many unrelated results to a really simple question.
In my old program "Premiere', to resize and move a video around was very easy. You could adjust the scale and X-Y values numerically, or you could use a Free Transform like in Photoshop. Simply dragging bounding boxes for size and aspect and also dragging the clip to decide it's location.
The only way I know how to do this in FCP is I double click a clip in the sequence, it loads into the viewer, I go to the Motion Tab and then I can adjust the Scale, which is cool. But then I'm left with the Distort section to adjust position (and aspect if need be). In the Distort section there are 8 numeric fields of info to figure out and fill out just to get one clip in a different position correctly.
I'm thinking there must be another way to adjust the location (or aspect) of a video clip without spending a bit of time on exact coordinates, I want to eye-ball where I want the clip to go and simply move it there. Is the Distort feature the only way to do this? If not, which is the fastest way to move and change the dimension of a clip.
Thanks for reading, I hope there is another way, I'm not use to these calculations and they're slowing me down.

I searched 'Resizing Video' and there was too many unrelated results to a really simple question.
That's because it's not a simple question at all and yet every one of those threads was related to the OP's question. As you discovered, there are lots of ways to interpret "resize," during capture, editing, effects, output, viewing, encoding, printing. But the solution was even simpler than you thought. All you had to do was open the manual or the online help system. Start taking the manuals to the gym with you. FCP is not Premiere. You're going to hate FCP, you're going to love FCP but it will never behave like Premiere beyond the elements of the functional paradigm. Forget Premiere.
