Crop & Straighten photos problems

Not sure if this can help anyone having problems using "Crop & Straighten photos"!
I'm using CS3 (but I'm guessing the problem may exist in other versions) to try and subdivide a huge pile of old scanned prints. To make the job easier, I scanned with only 2 images on the platen so that there is plenty of white space around each image.
When I try and apply the "Crop & Straighten photos" command, in almost every case it fails, only creating a duplicate image which looks ALMOST identical to the original. However if I then apply "Crop & Straighten photos" to that copy, it works perfectly.
What I discovered is that my scanners (both HP models, a flat bed and an all-in-one) both create a scan with a fairly thick black edge on two sides of the image.
So when I apply "Crop & Straighten photos", Photoshop thinks (quite correctly) that the image actually extends to the edge of the original scan, and there is therefore nothing to divide.
The solution is to re-size the original image to 99%., and then apply "Crop & Straighten photos" and it works perfectly. So far 99% has worked on all the images I've tried, but it may need to be changed to 98 or lower in exceptional circumstances. Since the scanned photos are well away from the edges, there is no danger of cropping any of the originals scans, but be on the lookout just in case.
Finally, I created an action to crop to 99% and save all the images (to a new directory), meaning I could automate that step, and then I used the script provided elsewhere in this forum to automate the "Crop & Straighten photos".
Works a treat, and saves loads of time

The trial version of Adobe photoshop 13 does not have the Crop And Straighten Photos option under file and automate....... all it has is "Fit Image"....... would really like to have that feature.... is it something they eliminated?

I am scanning in many old photos and there are several photos on one page.... I read about a feature that was suppose to be available under adobe photo shop elements 13 that would allow multiple cropping under the file, automate, Crop And Straighten Photos....... the only thing that displays on the version 13 that I have is "Fit Image"...... which doesn't help me...... have they removed this tool or do you have to crop and save one image at a time? Crop And Straighten Photos - Changing parameters / Editing Script

Hi. I am currently using the Crop and Straighten Photos automation to crop scans of 10 to 12 maps that are scanned on a large flat bed scanner.
A lot of the plans have rough edges and aren't always completely square. Is it possible to allow a tolerance (eg. 5mm, or 20pixels etc) before cropping each image? I've tried editing a .jsx script that was submitted on this forum (the script was designed to crop more border from the image, as opposed to leaving more image) but this simply added a black border around my image as it enlarged the canvas side once the image had already been cropped.
Instead, I need the selection area to be increased prior to cropping.
Does anyone have an idea on whether I can get a script to do what I am looking for?
Furthermore, if two or more of the maps are joined at all by a hair or a frayed string of canvas from the map's backing then the Crop and Straighten Photos automation considers it to be one map and crops it as only one image. Is there a way of increasing this tolerance to make the cropping process more brutal so to speak?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Christoph.
I'd realised that once i made the post, and yes, the duplicate and flatten parts in the process are unnecessary, they have been removed. The action is set up now so that once it crops the individual images, it closes the main image down, and then saves and closes the individual images. It is setup to save and close 12 images (as this is the most there will ever be in my case), and I set the action to post errors to a log rather than halt, so if there are less than 12 files it will continue and just post an error in the file. It works really well now thanks!!
I then run an action that options each individual file and brings up the "save as" dialog. This is a chance to perform a QA on the image and to save it as the correct name on the plan.
However, the action is currently setup so that it creates a complete new image each time and closes the original. This is the only way I can make the "Save as" dialog point to the new destination as if I simply open and "save as" the original files, the default folder always resets back to the original folder where the cropped images are. I'll have to investigate other methods of opening and renaming the images to help speed this part of the process up.

Slideshow crop photos problem when i close the thumbnail botton

In the slideshow i use thumbnail photo "turned on" to change the pictures (is it the only way to do it?) and manage them with crop function but when i later close thumbnail (i don't want visible) photos resize. Any suggestion ?

I have not a link yet, i'm preparing the graphic layout at the time. I bypassed the problem importing in muse the right photos size without use crop. Maybe i should see better edit photo functions tutorials. I'm new with Muse.

Crop and Straighten Photos in CS6

I open a 8"x10" jpeg or any other photo then go over to FILE menu and drop down to AUTOMATE then over to CROP and STRAIGHTEN PHOTO,S
Now what happens is that three other copies appear copy ,copy 2 copy 3 .
My original is OK at 8"x10" followed by the copy being 5"X7" then copy2 is about 1/2"x2" and copy 3 is about 3/4"x3/4"
I think this is being caused by interaction with CS5 as the same happens there.
CS4 is all OK this not being affected.
Now in CS4 i can crop and straighten but in CS5 and CS6 nothing can be done.

OK, here's the scoop: the feature in File>automate>crop and straighten is designed for those who scan in several photos with white space between them. It will make it's best attempt at separating each photograph by looking for the white space around them. It will then crop each photo to the edges it determines and make each straight based on the detected edge.
It is not designed to straighten the image in a photo. If you run this on a photograph, it is looking really hard for white space and will make its best attempt to separate what it thinks are independent items or photos and save each to a file.
If you want to straighten an image, go to the ruler tool and draw a line and choose straighten layer to get a rotation only, or go to the crop tool and select straighten, and draw a line that you wish to be the horizontal. This one will crop also.
I hope that clears up the issue.

Scripting and Crop and Straighten photos

photoshop CS3 has this neat feature "Crop and Straighten photos" which is very helpful in cleaning up scanned images (remove the black border) but is there a way to turn it into an action ?
i would like to apply this against many images (lots of files) in an automated way but being new to scripts/actions, I haven't had much success since this command creates a copy of the original.
is there an action that will help me batch remove the black border from all my images either using this CS3 command or another. thanks

OK, I'm giving back: here's an adaptation of Paul's script that uses recursion to iterate through all subdirectories. (Note that I also changed the file name suffix to a "static" (non-sequenced) value, as well as the name of the output folder, since I am using this to process single-photo image files. The original lines are commented out.) To implement the recursion, I defined the "main" functionality in a function ("ProcessFiles") that calls itself when encountering a subfolder.

Crop & Straighten tool missing from Automate menu

I'm using CS3, Extended
The Crop & Straighten tool doesn't show up under the Automate menu.
I've gone to Edit > Menus > Automate and it doesn't show up there either.
I have quite a large amount of multiple scans that need to be cropped and separated.
I never had this problem with CS2.
The following are listed under the Automate menu:

I've tried opting for the no-show in the Edit > Menus thinking that there may be too many selections, but that didn't help. Also, like I said, Crop and Straighten doesn't show up there at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it hidden behind the Slice tool? Any tools with a little triangle in the bottom right corner, have move tools behind them.
You could use the keyboard short cut 'c', but if the Crop tool is hidden, keep pressing Shift c until you see it.

Need a script to batch automate "Crop & Straighten"

So I have a few hundred image files that consist of 3 or 4 scanned photos also called "gang" scanned. The photoshop "Crop & Straighten" ability (located under File-->Automate) is great...But I want to be abe to run a script that will prompt me for a folder to be processed and then run the Crop & Straighten on all the photos, while saving them to another folder called "Edited" or something. I found a script in the forums for this exact purpose, but it doesn't seem to work in CS5. I ran it multiple times, it creates the folder "Edited" but nothing is inside of it. The script I found is posted below. Any ideas? I would really appreciate the help!

Hi there,
I have tested one script and encountered one problem; the script/PS is very aggressive. The result has been that single images have been divided to multiple images and many time "over cropped" and rotated in various degrees. Crazy : )

I have about 3000 images that I would like to have cropped.
What I would like to have is a script where I can state or set it to not allow it to divide pictures into many.

Scan in mutiple photos in one file, can I crop multiple photos...

at same time?
I don't know how to scan multiple photos as distinct file. I scan 5-6 pics it comes out at one file that I import into iPhoto. While it's very easy to crop each photo out of the file, I have to import the file as many times as there are photos
to crop.
I hope I've been clear. Is there a smarter way to work. I don't see a way to scan
the 5-6 pics as different files in my scanner software.

Vuescan is a 3rd party scanning application which can do batch scanning but is a little more difficult to set up. It works with most scanners.
If you have a Canon scanner you can scan in multiple photos at one time and have the scanner software crop, not as close as I'd like, each one individually and present to you in the editor of your choice or the one that comes with it.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. First off it would be good to learn how to use iPhoto - editing is one of the most basic operations - what version of iPhoto do you have? Have you watched the videos and looked in Help?
In general you select the photo can click edit - to straighten you use the "Straighten tool" - to remove areas around the photo you use the "crop tool"

Iphoto not printing full photo, cropping some photos

After I create a photo with pixilmator or any horizontial and export to iphoto, I can see the full photo, but when i print it cuts off the edges and only prints the middle. I have tried selecting different sizes, changing horizontial view to vertical view, nothing works. I had to print and send a copy of a licence, similar to a car registration format, and that too had the ends cropped out. Please help. so far i have to print photos from the pixilatore program or and adobe program, no problems there, only have problems with iphoto. using epson stylus nx420. Please help

As noted in the other thread you posed this question in you must crop the photo to the print ratio and then print - iPhoto does not "autosize" photos - if you try to print a 8x12 photo on 8x10 paper you will lose 2 inches - you have to precrop the photo to the size you want to print

Batch Crop & Straighten

A while ago a good chap helped me out by creating a script that prompted the user for a folder, then ran the Crop and Straighten Photos command on all images contained in the folder and saved the newly created photos in a new folder. The script is below.
The script saves cropped photos as PNGs, I'd like to save them as JPEG. Could someone help me out by tweaking the script to save as JPEG? I'd like them saved with the highest quality option.

What a great script. I extended it to recurse through subdirectories, and to filter out images that are too small to be reasonable crops. I hope this helps someone else as much as the original helped me.

Creating an action to crop straighten and save

I have scanned in a hundred or so pages from old photo albums, and have a thousand or so more to save.
I am hoping to use a batch process or script to automate the cropping/straightening & saving, but I can't work out how to get the files saved.
The album pages do not have a fixed number of images, so the crop/straighten is creating a variable number of images from 1 to 8 or 9 (maybe more - they are really old photos some of which which are very small).
So I need to find a way to create an action to crop and straighten (the easy bit), and then to automate the saving without asking for a file name and path for each image - the names created in the crop process are fine.
Can anyone help please.

Download, actually select all and copy from this page http://www.tranberry.com/photoshop/photoshop_scripting/PS4GeeksOrlando/IntroScripts/cropAn dStraightenBatch.jsx. Open text editor and paste then save as cropAndStraightenBatch.jsx file in Presets > Scripts folder or save on Desktop then copy and paste in mentioned folder. Run script from File > Scripts menu without any image open. In the first dialog navigate to folder with scanned photos then in second window navigate to folder where you want to save.
