Crop tool Aspect Ratios

I have question regarding the Aspect Ratios of the crop overlay tool. Lr comes with a number of crop aspect ratios - for example 5x7, 16x9 and 16X10; where 5 and 16 apply to the width, and 7, 9 and 10 apply to the height. There does not seem to be a way of creating customer aspect ratios like 7x5, 9x16 or 10x16. If i try creating 9x16 Lr, says it 16x9 and does nothing.
Is this by design? Am I missing something?

Just one more question about this: why do 4x3, 16x9 and 16x10, default to 1024 x 768 pixels, 1920 x 1080 pixels and 1280 x 800 pixels? I have enough pixels to do a 16x9 crop with 6016x3384 pixels.
I am skeptical of this statement. When you select 4x3, this means a 4x3 aspect ratio, and not a specific number of pixels
Fully agree with you but this how my crop aspect ratios look like; I can assure you that if select 16x9 it automatically defaults to 1920 to 1080 pixels. I am assuming that the custom ratios are below "Enter Custom ...".

    Hi Kglad.
I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)
here is the new tutorial for CC -  my guess is they have scrapped the control we had over the custom crop settings

  • How to crop by aspect ratio, not pixels or inches

I really haven't understood the crop tool. Sometimes it crops by aspect ratio, and other times it uses the absolute pixels you specify in the width and height options in the crop box. It's not clear at all. What am I doing wrong?
Say I have an image that's 1000 x 1000. I want to crop it with a 3:2 aspect ratio. So if I type width 3 height 2 the aspect ratio is OK, but when I OK the crop I get left with an image 3 pixels wide and 2 pixels high. Not what I wanted at all. I want an image 1000 pixels wide and 667 pixels high.
Why does photoshop not have a crop by aspect ratio (no resampling) instead of a crop by absolute pixels or inches? Thanks

  • Add custom aspect ratio to crop tool drop down box

    hello,
i need a few custom aspect ration settings to my crop tool. is this possible, its horrible to do this manual.
    regards

    Mark,
That's actually a great idea that you brought up, although it still isn't quite suited for my case.
By the time I've gone into projects, I would have typed in the ratio already. But I can see the benefit of doing this batch.
    On your great idea...
I've always liked how lightroom presets worked (you could have presets of many different settings into one easily selectable one), versus Aperture only having presets for individual adjustments. Your method would come really close to a global preset as in Lightroom. I've been thinking about this for such a long time!

  • PSE7 Aspect Ratio Crop Tool keeps seizing up on me

I run Windows Vista 32bit and PSE7+ACR 5.6 and I'm perfectly happy with this set up.  However, recently an annoying thing has been happening part way through editing a series of photographs, in that the aspect ratio crop tool seizes up completely, leaving me with the crop ratio that I last used before the lock up.
I have learned that the only way to resolve this is to save the picture I'm currently editing and close the Editor.  Once the Editor is re-opened the crop tool works fine again ... for a while.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the programme but that doesn't work.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem, and if so how did you cure it? I'm fairly desperate now - I tried the Adobe UK tech support twice today but was left hanging twice for more than ten minutes, so I had to give up as I'm on a fixed income I can't afford to waste money!
    Any ideas anyone?

I haven't been ignoring your reply Hatstead (thank you for troubling by the way) but I have already tried this on the numerous occasions that the crop tool has locked up on me.  I've also tried 'Reset All Tools' but that has had no effect either.
I had hoped to see a torrent of replies from numerous knowledgeable PSE users and experts on this forum, since a similar post by me on other photography sites has not produced a definitive technical answer to this problem to date.  I don't want to have to resort to purchasing PSE9 or 10 (plus the accompanying Scott Kelby book) since PSE7 gives me all I require at the skill level I find myself.
Once again ... has anyone else had a crop tool locking up problem, and how did you resolve it?

  • What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem.  There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out.  Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

  • Can the screen be cropped to and exported at a custom aspect ratio?

I think I'm needing Premier to do something it's just not designed to do. What I need to do is to take five or six different screen and audio captures of the same event (a 3D virtual reality instructional session), each representing a different person's view of that event, assemble those in a split screen, synchronize them to the designated "main" capture's audio, delete the other audio tracks, and add CG title labeling each one. The effect is like looking at a display showing six security camera images. From what I can determine, it is possible to do those things in Premier.
However, what I then need to do is to crop out any extra space to the left and right of that split-screen image and export the file as a .mov with the aspect ratio produced by the cropping so that the videos are as large as possible and are not distorted from resizing them to fit the standard aspect ratio. Depending on the size of the screencaps, the resulting .mov might have nearly a 1:1 ratio. What is critical for this is that the video be as large as possible and the "black" space be as small as possible so that the person who comes in later to analyze these composite videos can see everything  as clearly as possible. I also need to crop on the fly; because these images aren't always captured at the same size, it is impossible to preset a size for the resulting video.
We've been using a screen capture tool to do this that works but is a pain; clips can only be moved and resized by mouse-drags, and the software has to import to and export from its own proprietary format, which is very slow. However, ever piece of "real" video editing software I've looked at only seems to export in TV or film aspect ratios. Quicktime Pro looked for a bit like the best bet, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle multiple audio tracks (which are necessary since I have to synchronize tracks by ear much of the time).
Is what I'm describing--exporting .mov files while preserving custom aspect ratios that are created by cropping during editing--something Premier can do? If so, would it be something fairly easy for complete novices to do?

    medeamajic wrote:
On a Mac based system ScreenFlow might work best but on the PC side FRAPS might work best. You can do what you want to do with Premiere Pro once you record the screen capture. As Stephen_Spider mentioned you might need to crop and even resize the images. FRAPS can record at 1/4 the screen resolution and still have decent results. PP CS 5.5 can play several layers (6 PIPs) of the FRAPS codec at 1/4 resolution in realtime.
Thanks, but we cannot change the screen recording process. According to the study's protocols, the virtual world has to be full-screen or almost nearly so during the session, and that full screen has to be captured for analysis. Resizing the screen captures is not a problem (especially since I already said I'm doing that), but if you're saying that Premier can only play back up to six screen captures simultaneously if they're captured at 1/4 screen, then that's a deal-breaker right there.
By the way, here's approximately what each of the completed composite videos looks like:
    Screencap 1
    Screencap 2
    Screencap 3
    Screencap 4
    Screencap 5
    Screencap 6
Each screencaptures is resized to the largest consistent size that will fit into this format, and then the resulting video is cropped to the outside border. If there are only five screencaptures, I simply center the single one on the bottom on the "center line."
And, to be clear (though I've said this several times already), this is something that is already being done. We probably have more than 60 of these .mov files, each around 45 minutes long, with five or six synchronized screen captures in each. Frame rate etc. has not been any issue with these, and neither has playback of the .mov file from HD or DVD.

  • Aspect ratio of selection tools locked in CS4

Suddenly, all tools that produce a marquee during dragging are locked to a 1-1 aspect ratio, as though the shift key were depressed. For example, with the rectangular selection tool, a square marquee is displayed during dragging. However, when I let the mouse button up, the selected rectangle is not square, but has corners at the start and end points of the drag. If I depress the shift key before releasing the mouse button, I get the square selection corresponding to the displayed marquee.
This behaviour affects all selection tools that display a rectangle-bounded marquee (rectangle, ellipse, crop), as well as drawing tools. Similarly, transformation tools such as scale and transform also act as though the shift key were depressed during dragging, but, when the mouse button is released, produce a result which one would expect if the shift key had not been depressed (unless it is depressed as the mouse is button is released).
Any help to resolve this would be most appreciated!

I've been having the same problem. I had it occasionally with Photoshop CS3 and I've recently upgraded to CS5 and it just occurred again. I would love to figure out why this happens.

  • How to check for different crop aspect ratios

The problem I'm having is that I have hundreds of images that I need to send to a photo print lab. Before sending off my images I have to make sure they all will fit correctly for 8x10 prints (5:4 aspect ratio) and other ratios but I need to keep them cropped in my camera's default 3:2 aspect ratio for people who want to buy 4x6 prints.
So what I do when I open all my images in Bridge's Camera RAW browser is fit and crop any images that need cropping but using the 3:2 aspect ratio. I then need to check to see if my crop will work as an 8x10 crop picture so that nobody's heads are cut off, etc. The problem Bridge is giving me is that when I crop the first time it doesn't allow me to check another crop without losing the original first crop. For example, I do my first crop as an 3:2 aspect ratio and then when I click on 5:4 to check for 8x10 prints it resizes the crop area which lets me check the crop for 5:4 but when I go back to 3:2 it doesn't go back to the original crop so I have recrop the original crop from memory. Is there any way to solve this problem? Basically crop it twice without loosing the first crop so that I can go back.
Also is there any way to quickly click on all aspect ratios like 5x7, 8x10, etc and have the crop centered in the image so that I can quickly check if anything is cut off? My lab is a high volume automated photo lab so they crop by using the center of each picture and I can only give them one image per person. Most of my images don't need cropping because I try to do it in camera but I have to check to see if they will fit for other crop sizes. Currently Bridge makes me create the crop size manually and then visually center the crop over my image. I would prefer quick buttons that when clicked on will show me what the crop will look like in different crop ratios. Is there anyway to do that?
Thanks for any help you can give me

You might want to try this in Adobe Lightroom (it uses the same Camera Raw
    engine as PS and Bridge).
In the develop mode you can use the crop tool with presets and custom
options that works faster and has an easier and better history tool to
retrieve your original crop setting than Camera raw in Bridge and PS has to
    offer.
I would prefer quick buttons that when clicked on will show me what the crop
will look like in different crop ratios. Is there anyway to do that?

  • Crop Aspect Ratio, width, height, resolution locks up

I am running PSE6 on an XP PC platform.
This anomaly happens about 75% of the time.
After processing a batch of raw images in Camera Raw, highlighting them and clicking on Open Image to open the converted images in PSE, I sometimes find I cannot open the Crop Aspect Ratio selection drop-down box.  Nor can I type in changes to Width, Height, and Resolution fields--I can, however change the values by using the sliders that appear when I mouseover the Width, Height or Resolution titles, but even that's limited--whatever is to the right of the decimal point remains unchanged.
I've also experienced this Crop "lock-out" when just opening JPEG/TIFF/PSD images directly from the image file folder.
The only way I have found to clear this anomaly has been to close and reopen PSE.  Today, for the first time, that didn't fix the problem.  It came up with Crop locked up.
Has anyone else run into this?  If so, what, if any, solution is there?
    Thanks,
    dale

First try clicking the little arrow at the far left of the options bar and choosing reset tool. If that doesn't do it, quit the editor, then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift. Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Aspect ratio lock / gradient tool / brush /  doesn't remember status

    hello,
why do i always have to tell the aspect ratio lock 1023429384 times to lock itself until it remembers it's status?
it's the same with the brush or gradient tool. it remembers only it's previous status which is kind of total nonsense and annoying.
    what am i doing wrong?
    thank you!
    geerd

    Frustrating isn't the word.
I reported this through a previous post (much the same as you are experiencing).
    crop not keeping to ratio
It was ok in LR3 and is ok in LR5 (I think)
so they have fixed the bug, but where does that leave the LR4.4 users ??
    Upgrade to LR5 ?
Surely there should be a LR4.4 bug fix that can be downloaded instead of yet another purchase to upgrade.

  • After pasting a crop, how can I keep that aspect ratio?

I am using LR3.2.   I often use "Previous" to paste settings onto a picture, including a crop with an aspect such as 5x7.  When I then go into the crop tool and grab one of the corners to resize the crop, it snaps back to the "Original" aspect ratio.  Is there a way to tell it to keep the same crop ratio I just pasted, without having to reselect that aspect each time?

    It's a bug.

  • How to crop to a specific aspect ratio, then resize to specific size?

    HI,
I need a running start, could someone please help me accomplish a specific task.
    1) I need to be able to restrict a crop tool to a specific aspect ratio, then resize the cropping tool as I like to make my selection.
    2) After, I need to resize the image to a set size... (so all my pictures wind up the same size.)
After I would normally set my text the way I like it and add text to every picture (so it is the same size in all photos.) and save them.
I do this in Paintshop with ease, but do not see the kind of controls on the cropping tool, or a place to resize an image other than the save.
I just purchased Photoshop/Lightroom so I am in this with both feet, I could really use the help to get started in this because I need to work on this now or  or go back to Paintshop until I can figure it out when I get the time.
    Thanks,
It is not easy to ask for help.
    Kevin

OK, first a basic explanation: LR is not like Paintshop or Photoshop because it is a Raw converter and all Raw converters work non-destructively. This means that any edits that you set in the Develop panel are not actually carried out on the original image file, but rather only recorded for future reference. That future moment comes when you export (create and output) a new tif, psd or jpg file, send an image to Photoshop or some other secondary editor, or send the image to a printer.
Now for the cropping: Select the crop tool in the tool bar under the Develop histogram. A drop-down menu offers a selection of the more common aspect ratios or you can set a custom ratio. Use the X key to toggle between landscape and portrait orientations. Set the crop box to the size and location you want by dragging the corners and close it. The crop is recorded in the catalog database file and this info will be used when you export the image. Because no actual cropping and/or resizing is done until export, the resizing instructions are on the Export dialog. This way the same crop configuration can be used with differently resized exports. Tick the Resize box and put in the pixel dimensions you want. Alternately, put in a size in inches or centimeters and a pixels per inch (ppi) resolution and LR will calculate the pixel dimensions. If you are resizing, I'd highly recommend also enabling Output Sharpening. It is interactive with the resizing and automatically does the optimum sharpening for the amount (and type) of resampling being done.
If you want a number of images to be the same size, export them all together by, after editing and cropping them, selecting them all in the Library grid or the filmstrip and then running the Export dialog

  • Defined crop aspect ratios work only in landscape mode (LR2.1) (Mac, Win)

When I try to use pre-defined or user-defined crop aspect ratios, e.g., 5x7, on a picture in portrait mode, the crop always goes into landscape mode. This makes no sense; PS doesn't do that.
As an interim solution I have been rotating my portrait pictures 90 degrees into landscape orientation just to get the cropping done, and then rotating them back to portrait, but my neck is beginning to hurt. What is the correct method for cropping in portrait mode using pre-defined aspect ratios?

The method I use is to set the ratio, then do not drag from the corner; plop the crop tool inside the edges and draw as you would in PS. Then adjust via edges, corners, etc.
