Crop tool change

How do I change back to the original crop tool instead of what looks like three scribbles? These scribbles showed up about 3 weeks ago and I can find no reason for the change nor where to return to the default tool.

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Crop Tool Changes its orientation

I have a crop tool preset I made in landscape orientation to size photos all the same for a data-merged book I do every year. With CS6 I noticed a new and annoying behavior; if I move the crop tool too far to the left, it automatically changes the crop area to portrait. If this is supposed to be a feature, it's a most unwelome one. If my crop preset is landscape, then that's what I want. I'd like to know if there is a way to disable this "feature".

Have you tried changing the Crop tool setting to use classic mode. I don't know if that will do the trick. CS6 Crop tool has been reworked. Many do not like the rework?

  • LR: Slow Crop Tool (Retina MBP)

-Using Lightroom, 2014 Macbook Pro Retina, runs almost instantly for all LR operations
-However, slow when applying a crop, ~20 seconds (e.g. in Develop module, crop tool, change aspect ratio, move crop area and click 'close')
-When applying a crop on different resolutions, crops in < 3 secs; great (e.g. 'Best for display' or custom res e.g. 1440x900)
-Even when using custom resolutions, retina or non-retina, (using autoscript or an app) such as 2560x1600, crop is applied in < 3 secs
-Only when using 'More Space' (1680x1050) retina option does applying crops slow down
For others with this 'slow Lightroom cropping' issue, try running your mac at different resolutions [system preferences>displays]
Any ideas why we are experiencing this odd behaviour?

Lightroom 6 / Lightroom CC update seems to have completely fixed this issue! Performance is fantastic

  • Cannot change tools and cannot use selection or crop tools

I am using Photoshop Extended CS6.  A new problem has started to occur recently.  I can select a tool, but I can't change the tool type. For example, I can select the Lasso Tool and when I right-click the tool fly-out appears, but I cannot select a tool from the fly-out to change the tool type.  The editing tools, at least the ones I can select, still work except for the selection and crop tools.  For the crop tool, the crop lines appear at the edge of the image but they cannot be moved.  For the selection tools, nothing is selected.  I can still use menu commands such as Canvas Size.
This happens when I open a file or start a new file.  I have Windows 7, 4G memory and nothing else running.  I have tried 32-bt and 64-bit versions.
This has happened intermittently for a month or two.  In the past, freeing up space on a hard drive seemed to help.  But now I have 50G free on one drive and 30G free on another so I don't see how that could be the problem.  Rebooting allows me to use the crop tool once, but then the problem reoccurs.
    Ideas, anyone?

No keyboard macro programs installed.  Microsoft Security Essentials is installed.  It says it is up to date and there are no problems.  A keyboard test program found no problems. I have tried two USB keyboards with the same results  I have 10% free on my system drive: and 15% free on my second drive.
    More clues:
If I open Photoshop by opening a file, the problem immediately occurs. If I open Photoshop and then open a file, it works until I press a key as described above.
The problem only occurs in Photoshop. I’ve tried lots of other programs, including Premiere, Audition and Illustrator; they all work correctly.
The problem can occur without a keyboard attached.  As I described above, if I switch to another application (Windows Explorer in my test) and then switch back, the problem occurs.  This is true even if there is no internal keyboard and no USB keyboard.

  • Crop Tool Confusion When Used to Change the Dimensions (but not the resolution) of an Image

Picture this.  You have a real photograph in front of you.  Its dimensions are 7x5 inches, and you want to cut out of that photograph, a 4x4” square.  You’re not bothered by the rest of the photograph, you’ll discard that, so you mark your 4” square on the photo at the place you want to keep, and with a pair of scissors, cut (crop) the photo accordingly.
Using the analogy above, I’m having difficulty achieving what should be an extremely simple operation in Photoshop CC 2014.  I have an image which is 5000px wide x 3800px high at a resolution of 240px/inch.
Using the “W x H x Resolution” option of the crop tool, I want to crop the image to 2100px x 2100px, maintaining the original image resolution of 240px/inch.  No matter what settings I use in the crop tool toolbar, the crop tool insists on sizing the crop by assuming the full length of the shortest axis on my image.  In this instance the vertical distance.  If I initiate the crop, I do end up with a 2100px square image at 240px/inch, but the shortest original dimension (and hence pro-rate the image) has been rescaled and resized.
What I was expecting to see is the crop tool outline simply showing a square which represents 2100px a side at 240px/inch relative to the image I’m viewing.  I would then drag the outline to the position where I wanted it, and then crop the image.  This isn’t happening.  I can manually resize the crop area with my mouse, and rely on the floating information pop-up to check the actual crop dimensions, but this seems counter-intuitive (not to mention difficult when attempting a pixel accurate crop).
Strangely enough, if I change the size of the crop window by using the mouse, and right click inside the crop area, the context menu has the option “Use Crop Box Size & Resolution”. Selecting this option updates the toolbar with the chosen crop size and everything is as expected.  Surely, this is what the crop toolbar should do in the first place?
Am I missing something here? I may not perform this particular operation very often in Photoshop, but I’m sure it worked the way I thought is should before!
    Regards,
    Steve

What I was expecting to see is the crop tool outline simply showing a square which represents 2100px a side at 240px/inch relative to the image I’m viewing.  I would then drag the outline to the position where I wanted it, and then crop the image.
You'd better use the Marquee tool for this. Set the desired number of pixels in the options bar. Click and drag and finally Image > Crop.

  • Crop tool stuck!! Won't accept changes

I'm processing a batch of proofs and midway through my crop tool no longer accepts the changes by clicking on the crop marker button. Doing so only brings the image up in full resolution, clicking again puts it back in crop mode. I can't get this behavior to go away by changing catalog/images/mode, exiting the app or even rebooting.
This is major show stopper. I needed these proofs out last night.

Any chances the image is now an offline one with a ? mark?
    Can't edit offline imaages.
I'm think this is not your case, though, or you would hav mentioned something on that.

  • Change Slideshow Thumbnail Photo States Via Crop Tool?

In a slideshow widget, I've noticed the only way I can change one of the thumbnail image's "states" to a different image (like a sepia version of the same image) is to double click on the thumbnail "image frame" and then slide the current image out of frame (using the crop tool also allows the same thing) and then I am left with a blank "image frame." Into that blank image frame, I can then FILL it with another image (the sepia version) and apply all different "states" (rollover, etc) to that image frame WHILE maintaining the original full size image that the thumbnail (target) is originally linked too.
So basically I then have a hidden cropped thumbnail image frame and my true (sepia version) image frame. Everything seems to preview properly, but what if any effect does all this "hidden" code info have? Anything. If I have 200 or so thumbnail images attached to a slideshow and each would have one of these "hidden" cropped boxes.
    Thoughts anyone?

I have not a link yet, i'm preparing the graphic layout at the time. I bypassed the problem importing in muse the right photos size without use crop. Maybe i should see better edit photo functions tutorials. I'm new with Muse.

  • Does anyone know why the delete and hide options are still missing in the crop tool option bar, despite having changed the background layer to a regular layer?  Thanks!

Does anyone know why the delete and hide options are still missing in the crop tool option bar, despite having changed the background layer to a regular layer?  Thanks!

    "flying blind."
"You totally lost me there, and I have no clue as to what your last question means."
"I think I now know what you mean."
Evidently language is of difficulty for you.
Perhaps the Oxford dictionary can provide you with your much needed “sensible, meaningful” content.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a dialogue is to "Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem."  It also states that a dialogue is "A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed toward exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem.”
That IS the inherent nature of posts. A conversation is reciprocation.  Questions, followed by more questions.
It is not difficult to understand.
"how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers" is best actualized by simply asking.
Is it a Mac; is it not, etc.
That IS sufficient.  That IS "quicker and better answers[ing]."  That IS what a dialogue IS.   And that IS actually what is "sensible," "meaningful," and "detailed."
The Oxford dictionary can best delineate and elucidate your lack of comprehension in what ACTUALLY “meaning” is.
As well as what is "sensible" AND "detailed."
By the way, am I being repetitive.
Still confused.  Let the experts that do not require much explanation respond with "quicker and better answers" for both "sensible, complete" responses." They are not "lost," "blind," or provide "incomplete" drivel.

  • How do I change the look of the cropping tool

How do I change the look of the cropping tool

What do you mean, "change the look"?  Please be specific.
What do you want the crop tool to "look" like?
Yes, the crop tool is different than it used to be. But it works just as well as it always did. Instead of moving the crop over the timage, now move the image. Use the edge handles to adjust the crop size. Alternatively, set the crop tool to work in various ways by adjusting it in the control bar. (Size and Proportions, Rotate Crop, Straighten Image, Crop Options, etc.)
Alternatively, you can set the Crop Tool to have "classic" behavior, also via the control bar.

  • Can the crop tool resize resolution be changed?

When using the crop tool, and resizing it via the mouse, the dimensions tend to jump by 6-15 pixels depending on the phase of the moon (or more likely which dimension I am changing).
It would be nice if I could get LR into a 1-pixel movement mode or otherwise be able to set an exact pixel size for the cropping.  Putting my mouse into high-resolution mode does not help.  The crop tool always runs in a "fit" zoom mode so cropping at 1:1 zoom is not an option.
The "custom aspect ratio" dialog does not get me there because it does not do pixel dimensions.
I am aware that after doing the crop, I could use the export tool to get the exact pixel dimensions, but that is not what I am looking for.

When you email a picture from Photos, you can choose the size.

  • Why when using the crop tool in Photoshop CS6 does it suddenly change the layer and file format?

I really need help with this. If I open a jpg in PS6 and crop it, the file transforms from a locked background layer to Layer 0 which is not locked. Then if I want to Save as a jpg I must flatten the layers as it is now a PSD file. SO frustrated! Anyone know what's going on?

Enable the Delete Cropped Pixels in the crop tool options up top—this is the phrasing in my PS-CC.  I assume PS-CS6 has a similar crop tool option.
If you don’t delete the cropped pixels, they are just hidden, then a layer needs to be created to hold the hidden pixels.

  • Why is the crop tool in Lightroom 5 so sluggish on my otherwise very fast machine?

I'm running a Macbook Pro Retina, new from this time last year.  It's got 16gb RAM, a 768gb SSD (with about 150gb free space), and 2.8GHz processor.  Everything else is lightening fast on my system.  Lightroom is fine otherwise, but the crop tool is almost unusably slow.  When I tap "R", it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load into crop mode, and another 5-10 seconds to load out of it.
Additionally, it will show the incorrect preview in crop for the first few seconds, so if I go back to re-crop something, it will act as if I am adjusting the cropped version rather than the original, so if I exit too quickly, it comes back wrong.
I've tried what other users recommended - using both full screen and not, updated to the latest version, restarted multiple times with no solution.  Please help!

I was amazed at the amount of info you put into that post. Thanks for that effort.
I made sure Onyx was up-to-date and ran all the schemes you listed. That did nothing. However, reading further in your support thread gave me some ideas. I started looking into third party extensions and plugins. I recalled installing Silverlight a few days ago, for what reason I have no idea, since I trust Microsoft only marginally more than I trust Google. Which is to say, I don't trust either of them at all. So I threw that plugin into the trash.
I should have checked the performance right there, but I didn't. Right under Silverlight, you mentioned Flash. I decided to check the prefs on it, and found that it was set to allow sites to save info to my computer, and Camera/Mic and Playback were changed from "Block" to "Ask Me". I distinctly remember setting those for maximum privacy. I reset them, cleared all the files, and exited the prefs.
I just checked them again, and everything is changed back to allow Flash to have its way. Looks like I'll be uninstalling that now...
I also installed Acrobat recently, just to have an alternative to Preview. Sea Monkey opened an alert box just now, telling me to watch out for the Acrobat plugins, as they've been known to cause problems. Gotta love Adobe.
Back to the topic at hand, I think it was the Silverlight plugin that caused the slowdown. All my browsers are running at full speed now after I threw that plugin out. (Now if I could just get Safari to allow me to back up a page without re-rendering it every time...)
Thanks very much for the help.

  • LR5 when I use the crop tool or the brush tool the DONE box that shows up in the bottom corner is gone. How do I get it back?

When I go into the crop tool (or any other tool) there is usually a DONE box that shows up on the bottom to exit the tool. Recently it disappeared. Now to close the crop I have to use the short cut key or click the tiny little "close" on the side. Is there a way to get the done button back? I updated with the latest software update and also reset all custom setting just incase I changed something accidentally. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you so very much! I must have gone 2 months trying to figure that out… and finally I asked. Such a simple solution too.
