Crop tool doesn't work in Save for Web GRRRRRR

Hi,
I'm working with Illustrator CS3 and seem to have a problem with the crop area tool. When exporting an image in "save for web", however, Illustrator just ignores the settings and crops to the artboard.
Is this a know bug? Or my computer going nuts? What should I do?
I took this from the lost archive⦠I seems that slices influence this.
Anybody any clues? (AI 13.02/ OS X 10.4.10)
thnx

Basically, I would do this as James does. However, James is assuming you know what he means by "Use two applications of Transform effect to make the 3 x 4 array." Since you or another reader may not, I offer the following recipe that I prepared some time ago for a class. It's for 8-up business cards that will fit on letter-size stock.
SETTING UP THE ELEMENTS
New document, rename Layer 1 to Cards.
Make a rectangle 3.5 X 2 inches (the size of a standard business card). Give it no stroke and a light gray fill (so you can see it as reference; you can clear the fill later).
Make a single set of crop marks for the top left corner. I made a 27-pt. square (3/8 inch) - no stroke or fill - and another at 18 pts (1/4 inch) - .25 stroke, no fill. Copy a horizontal segment from the smaller square, paste, and drag it to snap its left anchor to the bottom left anchor of the larger square. Copy a vertical segment from the small square, paste, and drag it to snap its upper anchor to the top right corner of the larger square. Delete the small square and group the segments/large square. Drag this group into the Symbols panel so you never have to make one again. The group on the page is now a Symbol; drag it by its lower right anchor to snap to the upper left corner of the business card rectangle. The two quarter-inch crop marks are offset from the card by 1/8 inch.
Select the crop symbol.
Go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform
Move Horizontal: 3.5 inches (the width of the card)
Move Vertical: 0
Copies: 1.
Reference Point (tic-tac-toe thing): right column
Reflect X: On
OK. The crop marks appear on the upper right corner of the card.
Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform
(Warning box: Apply New Effect)
Move Horizontal: 0
Move Vertical: -2
Copies: 1
Reference Point: lower row
Reflect Y: On
OK. Crop marks appear on all four corners of the card.
At this point you can give the card rectangle a fill and stroke of None, and save the card/crop marks combination as a symbol. Call it BC.
Delete all the unused Symbols and Save Symbol Library: "BC"
Target the Card layer (click on the circle)
Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform
Move Horizontal: 4 inches
Move Vertical: 0
Copies: 1
Reference Point: any
Reflect: Both Off
OK. A copy of the card with its crop marks appears 1/2 inch to right of original.
Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform
Move Horizontal: 0
Move Vertical: -2.5 inches
Copies: 3
Reference Point: any
Reflect: Both Off
OK. 3 new rows of cards and crops appear below the first row
You now have crop marks for 8-up business cards; the original crop symbol and card rectangle are selected.
Go to the Graphic Styles panel and make this a new graphic style; name it BC 8-Up. Delete all the unused Graphic Styles, and Save Graphic Style Library as "BC 8-UP"
USING THE ELEMENTS
New document. Drag out an instance of the BC symbol, and put it in the upper left corner of your letter-size page.
Click the BC 8-Up Graphic Style. Eight blank business cards are laid out.
New layer. Over the top left business card create or place any combination of type or art you want repeated on all the cards.
Target the layer and click the BC 8-Up Graphic Style. The artwork appears in place on all the cards. Any editing you do in the top left card is instantly reflected in the others. Also, because the style is applied to the layer, anything you put on this layer will have the style applied to it.
New layer. Over the top left business card place any type you want to be different on each card. With it selected as an object, click the BC 8-Up style - the type appears on all the cards.
Object > Expand Appearance. The type on each card is now individually editable.

  • CS5 Crop marks don't work in Save For Web

    I'm playing in the trial version of Illustrator 5.
    I'm having trouble figuring out the crop marks.  I select an object and try the various versions of creating crop marks.  But when I Save For Web, it does not use the crop marks as a guide to trim the artwork down.  The crop marks are visible.
    In CS3, which I've used for years, I would create an object and use the crop mark tool to create the marks at the size of my object.  When I would Save For Web it would save the file to the exact size of my crop marks, no matter if I had artwork in clipping masks that go outside the crops.
    Why does this not work in CS5?

    You do speak the truth so in CS 4 and now Cs 5 you instead of drawing a rectangle and the making it into crop marks you simply draw an artboard then when you export you select to use artboards in the export dialog  and select the artboard you just made and voilá.
    Now before you go crazy this is an advance you can also choose to export all the artboards a range of artboards or a non-contiguous selection of artboards this way.
    the difference here is that you draw the artborad which is actually drawing a rectangle and making the crop marks as in the CS 3 all in one opertation
    it is really the same feature with lots of features added to it. Including the ability to name the art boards (cropped areas) number them reorder them
    manage them in the artboard panel and then the team went farther than that with pasting in place pasting an element on all the artboards at once.
    It is really just the crop area feature but with lots of possibilities.
    If you need t draw an artboard within another artboard hold down the shift key.

  • Batch doesn't seem to work with Save for Web

    Using Photoshop CS3 on Leopard. This should be simple: I want to create thumbnail images of a folder full of PDFs.
    I create an action that opens the PDF, opens the first page at a width of 200 pixels, flattens it, Save for Web at 60% quality, and closes without saving.
    I simply cannot run this action on a folder of PDFs without it trying to overwrite the same filename each time. 'Override Action "Save As" Commands' checkbox makes no difference, nor does choosing a different folder as destination.
    What am I doing wrong? I've been trying everything, and searching the web, for nearly 2 hours.

    Hi Paul,
    Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it, but there are two problems:
    1) I use the "First page only" setting, but in some of my PDFs, it comes out with a double-page spread consisting of the last page and the first page.
    2) File sizes are much too big. If I use Save for Web at 60% quality, the same file comes to 16K, and with this script, 100KB. (This is for web use.)
    I doubt that the script could be adapted to fix these problems, so I'm still hoping somebody can advise how to make Photoshop's Batch function work correctly.

  • Script Needed to work with "Save for Web" Tool

    I am looking to compress the JPG image files using the Save for Web tool within Photoshop CS2. As you know, this tool yields better results in image quality and file size than the standard Photoshop Save As command.
    To this end, I would like to batch process multiple images within multiple sub-folders. Unfortunately, I havent found a process that will allow the use of the Save for Web JPG compression, batch process the JPG files within a sub-folder structure and re-write the images to the same folder.
    What I have managed to accomplish up to this point, is create a Photoshop Action incorporating the Save for Web tool. However, the Save for Web menu always prompts to save a file to a specified folder. This seems to be the Catch-22 to the batch processing capabilities. When using Photoshops batch processing feature with this Action, and also enabling include all sub-folders, all the resulting files created are always saved to one specified folder.
    I need a script (perhaps Java or Visual Basic) which will run in Photoshop, and allow the use the Save for Web tool (JPG High, Quality 60, Optimized), batch process a series of images contained within a sub-folder structure and then re-write the image files to the same location. Can anyone help with this?

    The files must be very large.
    On my machine
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.01GHz 1GB Ram
    It failed with an uncompressed file 347.6MB (40.9MB on Hard Disc) with not enough memory.
    It managed to do a 277.4MB uncompressed file (34.3MB) with no problem although it was slow.
    With such large files it might be betted to just do a folder at a time so there are two new vars that you can alter.
    MAXJPGSIZE this is the size of the file on the Hard Drive.
    SUBFOLDERS setting this to true will include subfolders and false will only process the selected folder.
    Paul.
    //GLOBAL vars, amend values to suit.
    //Maximum size of file in Megabytes  to process (This is the file size on the Hard Drive)
    MAXJPGSIZE = 34;
    // "true" = include subfolders - "false" do not include subfolders
    SUBFOLDERS = true;
    var imageFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Select the folder with JPGs to process");
    if (imageFolder != null)  processFolder(imageFolder);
    function processFolder(folder) {
        var fileList = folder.getFiles()
         for (var i = 0; i < fileList.length; i++) {
            var file = fileList[i];
      if (file instanceof File && file.name.match(/\.jpg$/i)) {
         if((file.length/1024/1024).toFixed(0) < MAXJPGSIZE +1){
                  open(file);
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var strtRulerUnits = app.preferences.rulerUnits;
    var strtTypeUnits = app.preferences.typeUnits;
    app.preferences.rulerUnits = Units.PIXELS;
    app.preferences.typeUnits = TypeUnits.PIXELS;
    var saveFile = new File(decodeURI(activeDocument.fullName.fsName));
    saveFile.remove();
    SaveForWeb(saveFile,60);
    app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    app.purge(PurgeTarget.ALLCACHES);
    $.gc();
    app.preferences.rulerUnits = strtRulerUnits;
    app.preferences.typeUnits = strtTypeUnits;
      } else
    if (file instanceof Folder && SUBFOLDERS) {
           processFolder(file);
    function SaveForWeb(saveFile,jpegQuality) {
    var sfwOptions = new ExportOptionsSaveForWeb();
       sfwOptions.format = SaveDocumentType.JPEG;
       sfwOptions.includeProfile = false;
       sfwOptions.interlaced = 0;
       sfwOptions.optimized = true;
       sfwOptions.quality = jpegQuality;
    app.activeDocument.exportDocument(saveFile, ExportType.SAVEFORWEB, sfwOptions);

  • Photoshop CS3 Crop Tool Doesn't Work

    Does everyone's crop tool work correctly in PS CS3? Mine doesn't and I wasn't sure if this is a flaw in the software.
    ND

    I just ran into a crop problem, too. I've been using the demo CS3 for about 25 days with no serious problems, on a Macbook Pro. I have a file with 2 layers (background and background copy). I tried to crop the image, with the background copy layer highlighted. When I do, the whole screen goes black (as if I have cropped the whole image into nothingness). The tiny thumbnails on the layers don't show an image, but two squares (2 halves of the thumbnail) of faded colors. I opened a completely different image, and tried cropping that, and I get the same result! I double checked and I am not cropping to any weird size or resolution. This seems like a big bug, if it is a bug!

  • My crop tool doesn't work

    I need to crop a bit of the bottom off of my short video clip. I dragged the clip into the timeline, selected it, and selected my crop tool. The rightmost viewing window takes on the turquoise border, but there is no "crosshairs" or "x" through the clip image. When I try to use my crop tool on it, it doesn't do anything!! I don't even get a crop icon instead of a pointer. Getting frustrated although I know it's gotta be something stupid. Save me!

    Hi -
    You need to change the Canvas view to Image+Wireframe.
    The cursor will only change to the Crop tool when you hover over a corner crop point.

  • Photoshop CS3 + Leopard: CROP tool doesn't work

    Recently, using the CROP tool causes the image to shrink to zero and the file to disappear from the desktop. No matter what shape the CROP edit is set at, the result is a point.
    Have to crop by trimming with the CANVAS tool.
    OS 10.5.2, on a PowerMac dual quad (new).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks....

    OK - I am having the same exact problem - Upgraded to OS 10.6.4 with no improvement.

  • Photoshop Transparencies not working in Save for Web (png or gif)

    Hello..
    I've been searching the forums and google for a while, but everything I've found really seems unrelated.  I have a little X icon (all gray) against no background, and there aren't any other layers.  It doesn't work if there are either..  I'm really frustrated right now =(
    Help please anyone?
    Screenshots:

    Ok this definitely has to be a localized bug on my machine.
    I just went back into check - your comment about it looking perfectly normal got me thinking that maybe it's SUPPOSED to show the white area just to identify where color/opaque pixels are used - or something like that - but when I went in to look at the web preview I noticed two very strange things:
    1. The preview area (at the bottom where it shows the filetype, size and estimated download time) was showing "GIF IMAGE", however I had PNG selected as my preset...  I fiddled around and it fixed itself, and magically..
    2. fixed my main issue here.  That stupid white background is gone.  HALLELUJAH!
    You sir have the magic touch   Here's what it SHOULD look like:

  • Crop Area Tool leaves a small border when using Save for Web

    A grain of sand as problems go; tiny but irritating.
    The process:
    Click on an object (or grouped objects) with the Crop Area Tool.
    Click File, and Save for Web and Devices
    The problem:
    The resulting image is offset one pixel from the crop area box, leaving a white or gray border on one or more edges. No empty space between the image and crop area box is detectable when zoomed in all the way. All measurements appear accurate.
    I'm using Illustrator cs3 13.0.2, with Windows XP.
    Has anyone else come across this problem?

    Yeah I have the same problem and it is incredibly frustrating!!

  • PS CS6 action save for web error

    In Photoshop CS6 actions when we save the image as JPEG through save for web it doesn't work when we run it, instead it runs and saves the image as HTML, i guess some error in it. I tried it again and again but it doesn't remember my save for web settings and saves the images as HTML.

    It a new bug in CS6 though when you recorded the action you saved jpeg images to you desktop and you only entered file names onto the save for web action steps the action recorder recorded name.html.  I replaced you save for web steps on my machine for my desktop and CS6 recorded  name.html.  I then did the same with CS5 though I only entered names CS5 recorded name.jpg.
    If you expand the export steps tou will see the hard coded file names and extention
    An action like this will always save the same files it can not be batch because you recorded Path and Names in the save for web steps.  The .html files saved on with CS6 are actually jpeg files and if you rename them hrom name.html to name.jpg you can use them,

  • Recording Save for Web in an Action still doesn't work properly in Photoshop CS6 13.0.1

    There is still an issue with making new actions that include saving for web. While recording the action, save for web functions as it should. But once the action is played, regardless of the original format the saved image should be, it gives it an html filename extension. This can be extremely frustating when you have an action that saves over a hundred images from a single action.
    I have seen posts in Adobe forums from many people regarding this very irritating bug, including posts from Adobe employees acknowledging the bug. This was present in the Beta, the initial release, and in this 13.0.1 update. No fix.
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/ps_cs6_actions_recorded_action_expor ts_html_instead_of_jpg
    The employee acknowledged this bug THREE months ago (as of this post), yet all things considered, this doesn't seem like something that would take three months to fix!
    I have spoken about this bug with a friend that is a computer programmer. Considering that the action is saving the file correctly, and it's only the name that is not saving properly indicates that this is a superficial error, and not an issue that would require rewriting the code completely. Also consider that this WAS functioning properly in CS5, and that this is a very easily reproducible bug. Adobe should have plenty of information required to correct the issue. I understand that this fix may be more or less difficult to do than what I am suggesting, but it should have been fixed by now.
    I don't understand this mentality. Please Adobe... Put CS7 down for a little while, and fix what needs to be fixed in CS6. People (myself included) have paid A LOT of money for your products, it's not unreasonable to expect them to work properly. Bugs happen, it's understandable, but it's not unrealistic to expect a fix for them when the software is as expensive as it is. Is there actually any plan to correct this issue?

  • Photoshop CS3 "Save for web" doesn't work

    Hi everybody. I noticed one weird thing. When I want to use "Save for web" function on my Photoshop CS3 to save some jpg file and reduce size, the dialog window just doesn't appear. I clicked Save for web and nothing happen. The window of the file a wanted to save just get grey. I'm new in CS3 an it worked well in my CS2. BTW I use MacBook Pro and CS3 for Mac.
    Guys, any ideas?
    Thanx a lot. :-)

    Hi all,
    Deleting the SFW prefs worked for me.
    My Photoshop CS3 was working fine till I (probably unwisely) tinkered with system files to free up some space.
    Re-installed CS3 from scratch but still couldnt "Save for web".
    Then I found this tip suggesting deleting the SFW prefs and BINGO! Back in acion.
    Thanks for the tip.
