Crop tool in Option field

Is there a bug using the crop tool in Photoshop CS4 (11.02) and enter values in the fields in the Option field.
Enter values for Width, Height and Resolution is OK, but if i go back to change the value in one of the fields, everything in all fields disappears if i press delete standing in on of the fields.
This must be a bug in CS4.
Do anyone knowing anything about this?

Posting the appropriate Photoshop forum would probably get more responses.

I'm going to go out on a limb and make some guesses as to what happened:
Some time during the development of CS4, someone likely got the idea that the [Clear] button and the Delete key should be the same thing, to save some time for the people who are keyboard oriented and want to quickly clear out all the fields.  And so they redesigned the UI slightly to do that.
Then people like you, after actually using CS4, complained that they didn't like the Delete clearing all the fields, and Adobe told the engineers then working on CS5 to rethink that design yet again.  But they never considered releasing it as an update for CS4 because it was actually behaving as designed.  This avoided the risk that a change might break something unexpected also.
Companies are typically very resistant to do application redesign then release the change as an update.  That's just not how the software world works.  Mostly the updates are just for bug fixes, and only the most severe.  The latest example of this is Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  You wouldn't know it was any different whatsoever from the pre-SP1 software, even though there were clear design flaws in the user interface.
And of course they want you to have that all-important incentive to buy the next new version when it comes out.  I'm sure they even responded, "thank you for helping us to make our product better."

  • Crop Tool: Constrain Option

    Hi!
Whenever I crop a photo, the 'Constrain to Master Aspect Ratio' is selected by default. I'm wondering if there is a reason for that. Is there a rule out there that one should stay true to the aspect that the photo was taken? Ultimately, I'll crop however the heck I want, but I was just curious.
    Thanks!
    ~TPS

    God no!
    few rules of photography
Fill the frame, great what about shooting for magazine covers where they need space for text, there goes that rule.
Only shoot what the client wants, how many clients actually know what the heck they want, shoot vertical, horizontal, shoot tight, shoot loose, shoot the brief and then shoot alternatives, and of course shoot a dutch tilt, a close up and a panoramic version to go at the top/bottom of the page.
Its only for the web, so only shoot lores, how does one the crop in?
When it comes to cropping, rules what rules, crop for the final use or crop for aesthetics, each image and it use will dictate how you think about cropping it.

  • Trouble with crop tool

i think i may have hit a key or combination of keys that did something in pse. Now when i try to use the crop tool, and click the green check mark... my project that I am working on just turns in to a grey box in my project bin and disapears from the work area!! ugh! what did i do wrong?!

In the crop tool's option bar, top left, there is a tiny arrow. Click on that and reset the tool.
    Report back with your progress.

  • My crop tool in CS5 does not give the option to crop by pixel size

How do I get the crop tool to give me the option of cropping by specific pixel size.  Nothing appears in the dropdown menu except standard crop sizes in inches.

Have you tried entering the numbers with the suffix "px" in the entry fields?

    "flying blind."
"You totally lost me there, and I have no clue as to what your last question means."
"I think I now know what you mean."
Evidently language is of difficulty for you.
Perhaps the Oxford dictionary can provide you with your much needed “sensible, meaningful” content.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a dialogue is to "Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem."  It also states that a dialogue is "A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed toward exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem.”
That IS the inherent nature of posts. A conversation is reciprocation.  Questions, followed by more questions.
It is not difficult to understand.
"how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers" is best actualized by simply asking.
Is it a Mac; is it not, etc.
That IS sufficient.  That IS "quicker and better answers[ing]."  That IS what a dialogue IS.   And that IS actually what is "sensible," "meaningful," and "detailed."
The Oxford dictionary can best delineate and elucidate your lack of comprehension in what ACTUALLY “meaning” is.
As well as what is "sensible" AND "detailed."
By the way, am I being repetitive.
Still confused.  Let the experts that do not require much explanation respond with "quicker and better answers" for both "sensible, complete" responses." They are not "lost," "blind," or provide "incomplete" drivel.

I'm trying to do a batch crop in camera raw and there is no dropdown option in the crop tool to select inches or pixels. How can I fix this?

Create an action to do the crop and user the image processor to batch process your RAW files and have it use your cropping action in the process.

  • Crop Tool Issues

    Hello Everyone,
I've just started using Photoshop to work on my photos and one thing I was getting into was cropping them down with the crop tool.
It was working fine for the past couple of days, but all of a sudden now when I go to crop something it crops down to almost nothing - all that's left is a little grey pixel! I can set the area that I want to crop and adjust it and everything, but then when I press enter it goes to the small grey pixel rather than cropping to the size that I've selected.
I tried reopening the document, trying it on another document, and restarting Photoshop and my computer but nothings working.
Anyone have any ideas about this? Thank in advance for any input!
    -Des

When you have the Crop tool selected, are there any numbers in the size or resolution fields in the Options bar across the top of your monitor?
That could be the issue. If so, then choose the Clear button to the right of those. That should restore it to normal function.

  • PS4 crashes when I use the crop tool

I have CS4 Design Standard and it is loaded on my IMAC and Powerbook.  When I use PS4 on my imac and use the crop tool, it just hangs up and I have to shutdown and restart.  However, it works perfectly on my powerbook.  Any suggestions?

First, just press the Clear button in the tool's Options bar.
You may simply have some values or units in the Options bar fields which are trying to generate a ridiculously large image.

  • Crop tool question

Hi, I have a small issue which I can not find the answer too. I search the PS help system with no luck. I use the basic tools in PS to edit some product images here at work. Basically all I do is crop, resize, adjust contrast/brightness, and so forth.
Usually when cropping images I use the crop tool, select the area I want saved, then hit enter and everything else outside the drop boundaries is cropped away. Yesterday I noticed that when I click the crop tool button, then drag my cursor around the product and hit enter, everything disappears except a tiny dot the color of my background. Well when I say background, I mean if I take the photo of the product on a brown fabric background, then the color of the few pixels that remain are that same brown. But NO image at all of the subject. As far as I know, I didn't intentionally change any of the settings for the crop tool, but something has changed and I cant figure out how to restore it to the original setting. Hope someone cant help. Thanks in advance!

Clear out the fields in the Options area when using the Crop Tool.  Sounds like you've typed something in the Width, Height, or Resolution fields, and it's invoking the Crop Tool's resizing behavior.
The easiest way is to press this button:

  • I have been using Photoshop Elements 8 for years. All of a sudden, the cropping tool changed: I cannot crop vertically or horizontally anymore--only diagonally. This has made it impossible for me to get the photo I want. I hope someone knows how to fix th

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Can I get rid of the guide lines in the new PSE 10 crop tool?

The title really says it all. I dislike the guide lines in the new PSE 10 crop tool. Is there a way to get rid of them so the tool looks like it did in PSE 9?
    Thanks!

Select "None" from the "Overlay" option in the Crop Tool options bar:

  • Crop tool won't drag with CC Photoshop 2014

I have searched everywhere and talked with Adobe support through chat (they ended that abruptly??!), and Twitter and still have not had any resolution to this. I hope someone can help.
I'm trying to do a simple crop. I've done it a million times with no problems BEFORE CC 2014.
I select the crop tool and try to drag but it always stops immediately and selects the entire image as the Crop Preview.
    I've tried:
    using "Classic Mode"
    different Ratios/Resolutions
    uninstalling/re-installing
installing the latest update - but that always fails. - I'll even completely uninstall, then when it goes to re-install it will install the one file (after a million attempts at failing to download it) and then fail on an update that it tries to install. I've tried at least 20 times. AT LEAST!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Could it be my NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS? (I know that's not the reason for the failed downloads from Adobe servers - that's all on them.)

I have spent a week trying to get this to work and now it just started working for all images. I have NO idea why.
    Here's what I did:
    1. uninstalled NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS drivers and reinstalled them
    2. uninstalled CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
    3. clean install of CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
    4. installed update (took dozens of tries before this actually downloaded and installed successfully unfortunately)
    5. clicked on the crop tool and tried to drag... nothing happened
    6. waited, waited and waited.. went about my other work and forgot about it and then after about 5 minutes the crop box appeared. I was able to adjust it too.
No idea but I'm happy now.

  • Cropping Layers with Crop Tool in Photoshop CC 2014?

I have been trying to find out if the crop tool can be used in Photoshop CC 2014 to crop layers individually rather than the entire file, and I am not finding any answers through any searches. I can't even find a standard Abode How-to for cropping in the CC version. Is the Marquee tool still the only (best) way to crop an individual layer?
Also, I have been looking at a crop tool tutorial for the CC version that seems a bit opaque to me in the way it's written (Adobe Photoshop CC for Photographers), and it refers to a Crop options fly-out menu, but I can't find any way to access this.

The Crop tool is not designed for the job you would like done. As you have seen, it crops the entire image.
Instead, use the Rectangular Marquee tool to frame the area you would like to maintain. (Sample 1)
Then choose Select > Inverse. It will select the area to be removed.
Then tap the Delete key. Result is Sample 2)
