Crop tool is applying sharpening.

When cropping the same image in CS5 and CS6 there is an excess of sharpening applied in CS6 and no apparent way to disable it, the results of the identical crop from CS5 are vastly superior.
thanks

Check your preference setting for interpolation / resampling.  The default has changed to Bicubic Automatic.  Change it to just plain Bicubic.

  • Photoshop (cc) crop tool overly sharpens image after crop??

I have just noticed something really interesting and quite annoying about the photoshop cc crop tool.
It seems to slightly over sharpen an image after cropping. Does anyone know if there is a way to disable this?
I did the same crop with the same image in CS4 and looks fine. It's pretty nasty and makes images look very digital.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
    Thanks, Dan

This might have to do with a change that was made to the default resizing technique in Photoshop between CS4 and now.
Try this: Open the Preferences dialog box, and in the General panel, change Image Interpolation to "Bicubic (best for smooth gradients)". Then run the same preset.
If that change makes a Crop tool resize work like it did in CS4, then the reason you saw a change is because in more recent versions of Photoshop the default technique for resampling was changed to "Bicubic Automatic" which tries to pick the right algorithm based on whether you're resampling up or down. It applies to resizing in general (for example, transformations), and you're seeing it because a crop resulted in resampling.
You can test various settings there to see which one is best for your work.

  • Crop tool now displays a Diagonal.  The "apply during import" panel has gone away!!  Any help appreciated!!

My Crop Tool now displays a Diagonal instead of a "Rule of Thirds".  I do not know why or how to correct.
Secondly, the "Apply During Import" portion of the right hand panel has disappeared.   Thus I am unable to use custom setting while importing.  I don't really know if this happened during upgrade to LR5.4 or not.
    Any help greatly appreciated!!!

You probably pressed the O key which cycles through the crop overlays when the crop tool is enabled.
Click Tools / Crop Guide Overlay in Develop to see the various choices.

  • Aperture 3.0.3 Adjustments & Cropping Tool Bugs

I don't know if 3.0.3 actually did any good, but it did some harm for sure. Many times when I go to make adjustments, the entire adjustment pane is blank. Restarting Aperture brings it back, but this is rather annoying since it never happened before. Also, the crop tool has bugs. Sometimes when I crop an image, the entire image disappears from my project. Again, when I restart Aperture the image comes back. Another issue I'm having with crop is if I set it to say 8x10 and pull on a corner, it allows free movement like "custom" used to, and will not stay 8x10. At the same time, "custom" only pulls symmetrically and does not allow custom cropping unless I enter numerical values. Now that I've just shot a large family reunion and have hundreds of images to process, this is a real PITA. Thanks again Apple for a real half-assed update.

Thank God experienced users are having this problem! I have only just upgraded from iPhoto straight to Aperture 3 in the last fortnight and I thought I was doing something wrong with the crop function?! Also why isn't there a 'done' or 'apply' button for crop??? Is simply closing the crop box the applying?
    Totally Confused Newbie
PS also app goes into a loop when I try to import from iPhoto, won't let me stop import or quit or even quit Aperture.
PPS why are a lot of my imported (from installation I automatically imported my iPhoto library) pics upside down???
    not happy

  • Change Slideshow Thumbnail Photo States Via Crop Tool?

In a slideshow widget, I've noticed the only way I can change one of the thumbnail image's "states" to a different image (like a sepia version of the same image) is to double click on the thumbnail "image frame" and then slide the current image out of frame (using the crop tool also allows the same thing) and then I am left with a blank "image frame." Into that blank image frame, I can then FILL it with another image (the sepia version) and apply all different "states" (rollover, etc) to that image frame WHILE maintaining the original full size image that the thumbnail (target) is originally linked too.
So basically I then have a hidden cropped thumbnail image frame and my true (sepia version) image frame. Everything seems to preview properly, but what if any effect does all this "hidden" code info have? Anything. If I have 200 or so thumbnail images attached to a slideshow and each would have one of these "hidden" cropped boxes.
    Thoughts anyone?

I have not a link yet, i'm preparing the graphic layout at the time. I bypassed the problem importing in muse the right photos size without use crop. Maybe i should see better edit photo functions tutorials. I'm new with Muse.

  • Weird Crop tool behaviour with 16-bit files

Shadow areas of my 16-bit files show strange patterns if I use the Crop tool to rotate. I can also replicate the problem by doing the following:
Make a new empty 16-bit file in PS6 in RGB mode (File>New). Fill it with 100% black. Use the Crop tool and rotate to taste. Press Enter to accept the crop and zoom in to enjoy the black and grey noise patterning reminiscent of a man's suit. The Straighten tool will achieve the same result. Your suit pattern will vary according to the degree of rotation.
The problem goes away if you subsequently convert the file to 8-bit, or convert to any other mode (Greyscale, Lab, CMYK).
This patterning is easily visible at 100% view or less, and appears whether the View>Show>Pixel Grid option is on or off. It is decidedly NOT the pixel grid I am seeing.
This effect can be created with files from both my Canon and Hasselblad cameras.
    I'm using a Mac Pro with OS10.6.8.

  • LR3 - Canon 7D ISO 3200 vs. lower ISOs - Crop Tool

Is anyone noticing significant crop tool response time differences between low ISO 7D Raw files and 3200 (or higher) ISO files in LR3?  On the lower ISO files, the crop tool is just about immediate, yet with the 3200 ISO files, things are very much slower..  Angle tool, move (hand tool), etc. all take on very slow responses.
    Thanks..
    Jay S.

"Is it the crop tool? Maybe it's  the effect of noise reduction...
Try turning off the Detail panel and see if  there's any performance difference now."
Dorin..  The Detail panel is having a definite impace on the speed..  1600 or 3200, turning off detail made a huge difference in crop ability.  Hate the thought of having to turn off detail while working on leveling, etc.  Haven't tried other things like spot, etc. to see if there is an impact there.  For a given ISO, I like to apply as a preset to the whole batch before working on the images - just as a generic starting point.  I went back to LR 2.7 and do not see any difference with detail on or off with regard to crop tool.
Thanks.  Looks like you hit the "bug" if it is one.  I've no idea why that seperate catalog is like an order of magnitude slower though.
    Thanks again..
    Jay S.

  • Crop tool CS4

Crop tool has stopped working in CS4. When I hit "apply", the image all but disappears. Has been working fine until a few days ago. Has there been an upgrade or something?

If you hit the "Clear" button in the Crop Tool option bar, does that make it behave better?

  • Crop tool/perspective crop difficulties...

I've been using CS6 for a little while, and like many others (and UNLIKE many), I'm not happy with the changes to the crop tool...  I found a number of discussions about the crop tool, but none appeared to address my simple difficulties...
In past versions I created presets - for example, 1024x768x72ppi or 14 in x 11 in x 240 ppi.  I could very quickly apply a preset, and if my image was vertical instead of horizontal, I simply clicked the arrows between horizontal and vertical dimensions to switch the dimensions.  This capability appears to be gone from the CS6 crop tool.  How do I switch the dimensions in CS6?
And, no, the perspective crop tool isn't an adequate replacement.  I can't find ANY way to do presets in that tool.  Nor do I seem to be able to find a setting to show the "rule of thirds" on the perspective crop.
Was this thing changed just for the sake of change, or is there some SIGNIFICANT improvement somewhere in the tool that's not intuitively obvious to the uninformed observer?

OK, I AM the dumbest human ever!  I could SWEAR I tried every button and switch and whatever on the crop tool.  But, it does indeed work as you said......
Now I have a DIFFERENT problem....  I"ve gotta relearn how to crop to a size since it appears that selecting the 8.5x11 for example, does NOT give me an image size of 11 inches times the default resolution...  Another thing that's been consistent for X versions that I'll have to relearn...  Are you guys SURE the Adobe people didn't just change the way a bunch of this stuff works for giggles?

  • Rotating with crop tool unpredictable (CS3)

    Hi there
I'm cropping images using the crop tool, but when I rotate the crop area and then apply the crop the result is not what I expect – it rotates only fractionally and sometimes distorts the image as well. I am resampling as I do this (ie. I have set a width, height and resolution for the crop). If I clear this there are no problems.
Any idea why this might be the case?

    Hi Pierre,
Adobe fixed it partially in CS4; crop+rotate+downsample worked on a flat background layer, but still showed the unexpected results on any pixel layers. A very observant and dedicated CS5 pre-release tester (ahem... and handsome too, I might add) caught it in CS5 beta and all works well now.  I think that had been around... jeeze, since  PS6?

  • Crop Tool Oversharpening?

When I use the new crop tool in CS6 to reduce a large portrait to a small one for the Web the image is way oversharpened.
If I take the same photo and use Image Resize and use Billinear or Bicubic Best for Smooth I get much better results.
Left: Crop to 188px wide. Middle: Image resize with Billinear. Right: Image resize Bicubic Smooth.
Never had this issue before with CS5. Is there a general resize method preference? I'm on Windows 7 64bit if it makes any difference.
    Am I missing something? Thanks!

The general resampling method is in Preferences > General in CS6, as in CS5.
The CS6 default is Bicubic Automatic which uses Bicubic Sharper when reducing pixel count and Bicubic Smoother when increasing pixel count. Many of us dislike the sometimes extreme sharpening of Bicubic Sharper.
The CS5 default is plain Bicubic, so set the CS6 default to that since you prefer it.
CS6 introduced another difference involving resampling. When in transform mode, there is an independent resampling control in the Options bar when a pixel layer is targeted. Transforms of Smart Objects use the resampling method specified in Preferences > General.

  • LR: Slow Crop Tool (Retina MBP)

-Using Lightroom, 2014 Macbook Pro Retina, runs almost instantly for all LR operations
-However, slow when applying a crop, ~20 seconds (e.g. in Develop module, crop tool, change aspect ratio, move crop area and click 'close')
-When applying a crop on different resolutions, crops in < 3 secs; great (e.g. 'Best for display' or custom res e.g. 1440x900)
-Even when using custom resolutions, retina or non-retina, (using autoscript or an app) such as 2560x1600, crop is applied in < 3 secs
-Only when using 'More Space' (1680x1050) retina option does applying crops slow down
For others with this 'slow Lightroom cropping' issue, try running your mac at different resolutions [system preferences>displays]
Any ideas why we are experiencing this odd behaviour?

Lightroom 6 / Lightroom CC update seems to have completely fixed this issue! Performance is fantastic

  • Crop tool kept active

    Hi Everyone
I'm new to Lightroom - day one and loving it so far! Quick question (apologies if it's stupid) but my workflow sees me crop a batch of photos one after the other. In LR every time I accept a crop and right click to move to the next photo I need to use the R key or choose the crop tool to do the same cropping to the next photo and the next and the next etc.
Is there a way to keep the crop tool active as you move through images?
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
    Brendan

If you're trying to apply the same crop to images in sequence, then no that's not the way to do it, i.e. when you move to the next image it won't inherit the same crop as the image you've just left, it will open the image with the crop tool still open (which it what I thought you were trying to achieve) but it will either be at full image size or whatever size you had previously cropped that image to.
If you want to apply the SAME crop to a bunch of images, better to sync settings.

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Is there a way to create an action or keyboard shortcut to set Crop tool to the front window size?

Is there any way to create an action or keyboard shortcut to set the Crop tool to the front window size in Photoshop CS6?
I find that I use that several times a day. I got used to it being the top choice in the Crop tool presets menu.
    Thanks.

It depends on whether you have the cloud version or perpetual license version.
For the cloud version press  I (eye)
For the perpectual version press  F
