Crop tool locked on fixed proportion

My crop tool is stuck on a fixed proportion and I can't figure out how  to get it back to normal. It happened once before and the solution is so  simple, its pitiful, I just don't remember. Can someone help? CS4-64bit
TNX,
Joe

Wth the crop tool selected, in the tool options bar,
click Clear.
If you mean the Rectangular Marquee Tool, in the tool options bar,
where it says style, change that to normal.

  • Problem with scale tool locked on "constrain proportions"

I have no idea how that happened but suddenly my Scale Tool stopped working like it should be and works as if it was locked on "constrain proportions".
Whenever I try to scale an object (any object), if I try to scale it by dragging one of the transform bounding box corners, it scales like I would keep the Shift key pressed.
Is there a key shortcut that locks the "constrain proportions" setting?
I was trying to find an answer to that problem and it looks like there are people with the same issue but none of them got any answer.

The following article doesn't address the Scale/Transform behavior at issue here, but it offers some good information on scaling objects in Fireworks:
    http://www.fireworkszone.com/six-ways-to-scale-an-object-in-adobe-fireworks_654.html
I particularly liked its description of scaling using Pointer tool:
Instead of using the Scale Tool you can use the Pointer tool. The pointer tool can scale, auto shapes, bitmaps but cannot scale any path object or symbols. Rectangle Primitives are a special case, but if you ungroup it, then the pointer cannot scale it. Draw a circle/ellipse, polygon, or any auto shape and ungroup it to become a regular path, and the pointer tool cannot scale it. Draw a line with the line tool or a custom path with the pen tool, and the pointer tool cannot scale it.
What it doesn't mention is that you can basically surround anything with a Group, and then scale it using the Pointer tool—even objects that couldn't otherwise be scaled this way, like Symbols or Paths. So instead of selecting the Scale tool or the Transform command, you could group the selected object(s) using the Group command (e.g. ⌘G), scale non-proportionally or proportionally (with the Shift key) using the Pointer tool, and then Ungroup (e.g. ⇧⌘G).
    It's an idea, anyway.

  • PSE7 Aspect Ratio Crop Tool keeps seizing up on me

I run Windows Vista 32bit and PSE7+ACR 5.6 and I'm perfectly happy with this set up.  However, recently an annoying thing has been happening part way through editing a series of photographs, in that the aspect ratio crop tool seizes up completely, leaving me with the crop ratio that I last used before the lock up.
I have learned that the only way to resolve this is to save the picture I'm currently editing and close the Editor.  Once the Editor is re-opened the crop tool works fine again ... for a while.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the programme but that doesn't work.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem, and if so how did you cure it? I'm fairly desperate now - I tried the Adobe UK tech support twice today but was left hanging twice for more than ten minutes, so I had to give up as I'm on a fixed income I can't afford to waste money!
    Any ideas anyone?

I haven't been ignoring your reply Hatstead (thank you for troubling by the way) but I have already tried this on the numerous occasions that the crop tool has locked up on me.  I've also tried 'Reset All Tools' but that has had no effect either.
I had hoped to see a torrent of replies from numerous knowledgeable PSE users and experts on this forum, since a similar post by me on other photography sites has not produced a definitive technical answer to this problem to date.  I don't want to have to resort to purchasing PSE9 or 10 (plus the accompanying Scott Kelby book) since PSE7 gives me all I require at the skill level I find myself.
Once again ... has anyone else had a crop tool locking up problem, and how did you resolve it?

  • CS3 Crop Tool, this is Driving me NUTS!!

hello, I was just wondering if someone can tell me what stupid little thing I am missing with the Crop tool.
I have done it before...What I want to do is have the crop tool set at a fixed dimension, WITHOUT resampling let's say I have a picture set to 72ppi, that's 8"x8". And I want the crop tool to be fixed at 150px by 90px, res: 72ppi. What is happening now is, the crop tool is dragging the entire span of the picture, and resampling my selection to the size I specified in the options bar above. I don't want that
What I want to happen is that when I click and drag, only a fixed 150x90px box appears, so that I can't make it any bigger than that...I have done it before....but for some reason I cannot find the option to turn of resampling, or for that matter the options for deleting the cropped out space or hiding it.
It's driving me nuts!! any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot,

If you leave the resolution box blank, whether the crop tool resamples or not then depends on the size units you choose in the width and height boxes. If pixel units are entered, the original resolution is preserved and resampling must occur to effect that. If inches are used, resampling does NOT occur.

  • Crop Tool Malfunctioning! How do I fix it?

My crop tool no longer works. I can choose an area I want to crop, then when I go to "Image/Crop" it only crops a single pixel. I have been having to select the area with the rectangular marquee tool, copy & paste it into another layer, delete the background and go to "Image/Trim."  Why would this be and what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks, Neil.

With the crop tool selected, make sure there are no values
entered in the width and height boxes, if there are, press the clear button
and see if that makes a difference.

  • Fixed ratio for crop tool

I do a lot of photo cropping. Is it possible to set a fixed
    ratio for
the crop tool? It can be done with the marquee tool, why not
    the crop tool.
I know about Shift-Drag to constrain crop marquee.
    Thanks for any help,

Interesting, I'm getting the same thing over here. So you're
    not alone
    Marty. (FWs8 on winxp-home)
You could use a mask if the crop is relatively small?

  • I'm trying to do a batch crop in camera raw and there is no dropdown option in the crop tool to select inches or pixels. How can I fix this?

I'm trying to do a batch crop in camera raw and there is no dropdown option in the crop tool to select inches or pixels. How can I fix this?

Create an action to do the crop and user the image processor to batch process your RAW files and have it use your cropping action in the process.

  • Expanding Toolbar/Editor cropping tool is locking up

I can't figure out how to expand the toolbar on the top of the organizer to say, File, Edit, View, etc.. It has two tiny arrows instead of being expanded across the top. Any help is appreciated. Also, my cropping tool sometimes locks up on me and I can't change the size. I can only exit from editor and then re open to get it to reset. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong or is it a glitch in the program? I am using PSE 7.0

The organizer toolbars only show when your screen resolution is set to the windows default of 96 ppi.
The crop tool gives everyone grief. Things to try:
    1. Click the tiny flyspeck arrow at the left end of the options bar and choose Reset Tool
    2. Reset Editor prefs: quit editor then restart it while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file, which you do.
    3. Use the marquee tool instead: make a marquee selection of what you want to keep, then Image>Crop.

I have been using Elements 8 ever since it came out, and all of a sudden the cropping tool has changed: I can no longer crop horizontally or vertically, only diagonally. The up/down/side arrows have disappeared! Please help if you can, I'm no longer able to make my photos look their best. Thank you in advance.

Quit the editor (Quit PSE on a mac). Then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift). Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Bug in Crop tool with Olympus E-M5 raw files (ORF)

There is a bug in the crop tool with Olympus OM-D E-M5 RAW files (ORF) that is still not fixed with the recent update.  Here is how to reproduce the problem.
I setup my E-M5 camera picture aspect ratio to 3:2 (instead of the sensor 4:3) and file format to RAW.
    I take a picture.
I import the picture in Lightroom.  The first thumbnail I see is the full sensor, then Lightroom computes a new thumbnail and correctly display the 3:2 crop factor.
I select the picture in the library and press [R] to bring the Crop tool.
BUG: The Crop tool does not let me recover the full 4:3 sensor image and is locked to the 3:2 crop factor.
    Can this be fixed?  Thanks

Are you sure you mean Photoshop version 6 the is a very old version of Photoshop before ACR existed. ACR first became available as a extra cost plug-in for Photoshop version 7.  ACR started to be shipped with Photoshop with  Photoshop CS. Each version since Photoshop CS has a newer version of ACR which is not compatible with older versions of Photoshop. So
    CS ACR version is 2.4
    CS2 ACR version 3.7
    CS3 ACR version 4.6
    CS4  ACR version 5.7
    CS5 ACR version 6.7
CS6 and CC ACR version 8.4 however the new features in ACR 8.4 for CC are crippled in CS6. CS6 just get the new Camera support.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
If you have CS6 use menu help>Updates it should find the ACR 8.4 for CS6 and update your installation. If it does not you can down load it and the DNG converter.  However don't convert to DNG just use your OFR RAW files.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/04/camera-raw-8-4-and-dng-converter-8-4-now-a vailable.html
If you do mean Photoshop version 6 you need to see if Olympus  has a RAW converter for Photoshop version 6 for your camera.

  • Cropping tool not working - please help

i can't figure out what the %$#* is going on with my cropping tool. when i drag it across a picture, then crop, the image is reduced to a spec. the information window defaults to a size only fractions of an inch, even though the actual picture is still at that size, for instance 8x10.
i've tried booting up several times, and even installed photoshop CS3 software again to no avail. i don't know if this is a simple fix, or if there is an inherent problem with the software. it has worked fine for as long as i've owned CS3, about a year. then suddenly the other day stopped working.
anyone ever come across this glitch, or know whom i should speak with about this problem? any insight would be appreciated.

i've scoured this site and have not found any threads that nod to my specific problem. maybe i didn't look hard enough, sorry.
thanks for your response, but i don't know how to reset crop tool. could you please advise
    thanks

  • What is wrong with the crop tool in Photoshop CS6? (picture included)

Ever since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and started to use the new crop tool, I get this quite interesting visual error and some artifacting.
I didn't have the problem with the crop tool in the previous versions of Photoshop.
    What can be the issue?

Seems like a GPU problem. Can you try going into Photoshop Preferences, disable GPU acceleration and try if that fixes it?

  • Is there a cropping tool that also shows bleed boundaries?

I am looking for a cropping tool or plug-in that can indicate bleed or wrap boundaries.  I have a visible canvas of 24x48, and need to crop to include 4" bleed on all four sides... so the printed image is 32x56.  But I want to see and manuever the crop tool with bleed indicators so I can precisely visualize the front plane and determine what is being wrapped.
Is there a plug in or tool available for Aperture 3.5.1?  Thank you.

I follow.  See if this works around the problem you describe:
If you need a 2:1 ratio, and you are printing to 48 inches on the long axis for the visual plane, and need a 4" bleed on all sides, why not specify (in our imaginary tool) an Aspect 24 and 48; then the bleed, at 4, is proportional to the aspect ratio in units.  That would resolve the difference.
I am basically inputting whole units now with the crop tool, inputting for Aspect Ratio 32 x 56, and "centering" the image with some external markers and relative measuring tools.
If you are exporting the file at 300 dpi, it should come out as envisioned.
Thanks for the feedback link.  I will use it.

  • Can't get Crop Tool to stay in Custom LR4

I can't get the crop tool to crop in Custom mode. I unlock the lock and set to Custom and relock the lock. As soon as I begin the crop it reverts to Original. I've restarted. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Sound's right - you didn't change the aspect ratio before you locked it so it's still at the original aspect ratio.  Just unlock it and start dragging.
