Crop Video Dimensions

Hi. I am using Premiere Elements 8. I am wanting to crop the actual dimensions of a video I am working on...the video is of someone talking and is quiet narrow. I would like to be able to crop the video so all the extra on the sides is completely gone. I am putting this on my company's website and have a limited space where the video can go. I tried the crop tool but it just crops the video itself down, not the actual size that exports or the frame. Can this be done? Thanks.

Leslie,
I was hoping that you were going for FLV. While PrE does not let you Crop, you can alter the Aspect Ratio. In PrPro, you can Crop with FLV Export.
However, with FLV, you can Export to the vertical dimension that you need, and then Import that into a Project in Flash, with the Stage set to the dimensions that you need. You can then package and Export your SWF to the vertical Stage that you require. I have done this in Adobe Flash, and would also assume that some of the Moyea Flash editing applications (maybe others too?) can work with odd-sized Stages.
I've done "Sprites," which are often people walking and standing, with Transparency and Cropped to a strong vertical Aspect Ratio. These have been embedded in Web pages by the designers. Cannot tell you the exact steps that they used, but would assume just the SWF files.
Good luck,
Hunt

I don't neccesarily need a "Video Dimensions" column, but if I could find a script that copies the dimensions into the comments, that'd be fine. I tried compiling the script posted above but it didn't work. I don't really know anything about writing applescripts.

  • Why can't I import anything? "File video dimensions (width/height) too large"

New to PP CS4 here (that will be obvious momentarily...).  I can't seem to import any footage into any project (well, at least none of the bits I've tried, and I don't think there's anything 'wrong' with them).  Every time I attempt to do so, I get the error:
    Dialog title: File Import Failure
Error Message: File video dimensions (width/height) too large.
This occurs with every files I've thrown at it - admittedly, they all have a lot in common, but they're not particularly exotic.
The files are (mostly) AVI files (I know, I know...before I get jumped, I understand it's just a wrapper, etc.). The files come from two cameras:
    1. A Sony DCR-TRV20. Opening up the AVI in QuickTime Player, I see it's listed as "DV/DVCPRO - NTSC 640X480"
    2. Canon PowerShot A620. Opening up the AVI in QuickTime Player, I see it's listed as "MotionJPEG OpenDML 320x240"
    3. I somehow managed to get the AME to spit out a FLV file. That failed to import with the same error message, too.
I tried running these files through AME, and got the same results (although never having used AME previously, I have a question on that, below).
New project, settings are all (I think) the defaults: Preset DV-NTSC/Standard 32kHz
New installation of PP CS4, with the 4.1 update, on a PC running Vista 32 with all the endless MS updates applied.
Related question: I've skimmed other threads here, and noted the advice to "always convert any non-standard footage to DV-AVI Type II" before importing....however, I see no such option for that output format in AME....only generic things like "Microsoft AVI" and "Uncompressed Microsoft AVI".
Codec issues?  I'm a little skeptical, since these AVI files play just fine in Windows if I double-click them. Does that not suggest that there's a codec there for them?  The files are from (what I believe to be) garden-variety consumer cameras (these devices are a bit old and certainly not high-end, but they're hardly exotic formats, I think). The files are small, short clips I'm attempting to use just to learn Premiere, but it gags on every one of them, every time.
PP is so insistent that every file I throw at it has improper dimensions, but these files appear to be perfectly reasonably sized, and I assume it's operator error (I'm withholding judgement on the quality and accuracy of the error string it's presenting me).  But I'm not sure where to look for the right knob to twist.  Pretty frustrating to be stuck on Square 1 (actually, Square Zero).
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Please be gentle, it's my first time....

    Thanks, but....mmmm....maybe not.
I've tried multiple settings for New Projects. Just created a new one using the preset for DV-NTSC/Widecsreen 48kHz (frame size 720 x 480, 48 kHz audio).  Exactly the same results.
You say "To point you in a certain direction, DV from a TRV is 720x480, not 640x480."  However, according to QuickTime's Movie Inspector panel, the file is 640x480.  This clip was captured through Premiere - that wouldn't change its aspect ratio, would it?
The files from the Canon still camera are AVI files, not still images (so I don't see how the reference to Photoshop applies, or perhaps I misunderstood your point). They are 320x240, according to QuickTime's Movie Inspector panel. If they're 320x240, wouldn't that be the same aspect ratio as 640x480?  Attempting to import them, I get the same error....
While not exactly Hollywood quality, I just need files to play with as I attempt to learn the program, and it's not clear to me why these files should not work - other than the fact that NO files seem to work. Also, I'm not sure what your reference to "exporting" pertains to - I can't get anything imported, I'm not trying to export anything that (I'm aware of) - I'll worry about exporting once I've managed to get something, ANYTHING to import.
I've got some PP training videos (from "you-probably-know-who.com"). Following along using their project files and their video assets (MOV files in this case), I still get the exact same error.
So to summarize, so far, I've seen no evidence that this copy of PP can import ANY video file.
While I'm sure I would benefit from spending more time with the fine manual, I think there's something wrong here that's not going to be addressed in the introductory documentation.  If I can't import any footage into any project, progress is going to be slow.
How about this: is there some known-to-be-good test file I can grab and try importing that?  I've got very strong suspicions that I'll get the same error message.
    Thanks again.

  • How to crop video using ROI

    Hello,
Would some one please help me?
I have a loop which continuously aquire images from a camera and saves it to a video . I would like to crop a region of this video by passing the co-ordinates of a rectangle. After I have the cropped video, I would like to do a intensity profile of the whole video and display it using a single graph ( intesnity changes for diffferent frames in the y axis and the the number of the frame in x - axis.
    Joyce Joy

    Hi,
You can implement image cropping following the example:
    https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-11222
You would have to programmatically generate the ROI rectangle if you do not wish to have user interaction in the code.
I am not quite sure what kind of intensity profile you want, but here is a good example that performs it along a line, so you could just build an array of those and plot it.

    Hope this helps!

  • How to get video dimensions?

I'm using a ParallelElement with multiple videos. How can I get each videos dimensions? There is no width/height attribute for a VideoElement and I had no luck using the metaData either. Seems like such a basic task but I've been trying for hours now.

I guess correct video size is available only after metadata arrives (after playback start). To get video size try to acquire DisplayObjectTrait of VideoElement and look into mediaWidth/mediaHeight values.
You may want to listen to DisplayObjectEvent.MEDIA_SIZE_CHANGE events from that display object trait - it fires when video metadata arrives.

  • How change video dimensions and aspect?

Im having trouble using FCP to change a video that i have from a 4:3 to 16:9... the video was converted and turned out 4:3... how can i change the video dimensions or bring it back to 16:9??
    thanks
    much appreciated.
    Ben

Click on a clip. Under the Motion tab, & then under the Distort tab, go to Aspect Ratio. Try 33.33, 0 & -33.33 until it looks right & fill the screen properly. If you have to change a lot of clips, you might be able to use the Remove Attributes option. I'm not very good at explaining these things..but maybe this will help.

  • Correct iPad video dimensions?

I am putting together a video presentation to be played on an iPad. I was under the impression that the iPad's video dimensions are 1280x720 - my video is therefore 1280x729 pixels... However, when I play it on the iPad, it is played with black bars top and bottom - the video doesn't fill the entire screen....
Clearly I'm doing something wrong somewhere - this is the first time I've done this - can someone please point me in the right direction!?
    Thanks very much!

    Found the fix.
If the reboot doesn't fix it.
If the headphoens work find, but no external speakers.
If the double-click and page right to the software mute, doesn't show the sound knob - just the brightness
If your pop-up shows "Docking Station"
Then, the problem is very likely a dirty connector.  The iPad/iPhone/iPod connector uses a resistor value to determine if the device is connected to an external 'speaker'.  There are a range of resistances, for a range of products.  This is known as the Connector Pin 21 issue.
Take some windex on a que-tip, or perhaps a Windex paper scrub and rub it on the bottom connector port.  Somehow, "something" has gotten on those contacts, and it is pulling the voltage on pin #21 down - so that the iPad "thinks" it's connected to an external speaker - this will disable the internal speaker circuitry, as well as the internal speaker volume controls.
Do not over-saturate and short out your iPad.  Do not throw it in the sink, do not use the kitchen faucet to flush it out.  A Que-tip with a few drops of Windex (or other gentle cleaner) should work just fine.  Takes all of 30 seconds - and magically, the volume knob appeared and everything worked just fine.

  • Common video dimensions and bit rates for dynamic streaming?

I'm going to be converting my videos to flv and am trying to decide what to use for video dimensions and bit rates.  Some of my users have slow computers and connections so I'm thinking 150 on the low end.
Is there a common practice?  What has worked well for you in the past?

    Hello MrWizzer
I am not sure what FMS version you are currently using.
Well, if you look at the sampe vod folder that ships with FMS4.5, it has files encoded @ 150kbps, 500 kbps, 700 kbps, 1000 kbps, 1500 kbps.
I am sure that all of these files stream perfectly fine given the correct bandwidth environment.
Its totally depend upon the FMS hosting service provider depending upon the user base of a particular provider.
You need to judge what kind of BW is available to your viewers and put the files encoded at appropriate bitrates.
You may also look at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/beginning-fms45-pt06.html for refrences.

  • Z10 Video Dimensions

    Hi there,
What should be the video dimensions (width & height) to be able to see the video.
Is there any video player for Z10 out there that can switch from vertical to horizontal just like you can do with Blackberry Playbook.
Depending on how you hold blackberry horizontal or vertical, the video player will adjust the video. Is that possible with Z10?
    Thanks,
    Joe Green

The QuickTime Player application should give you all sorts of information about your file. Even if you don't have QuickTime Pro (to open the more complete "Show Movie Properties"), the "Show Movie Inspector" should give you the pixel dimensions.

  • Video dimensions on .avi files?

Hey guys. Sorry for the double post (I wasn't sure which category I should ask this, so I asked in the "Using Mac OS X Leopard" and "User Tips" forums).
Just out of curiosity, what is the best way to check the video dimensions of a .avi file? I know Finder will tell you dimensions on .m4v's and .mp4's and certain other Quicktime-only files, but I'm trying to convert some of my .avi's to my iPhone and I want to maximize the video quality by minimizing only as much as I have to and keep the original aspect ratio.
So far, I haven't found a quick way to check the dimensions. Get info and file details in finder don't seem to help me, even though I'm able to open up the files in both Preview and Quicktime (and clearly there is a defined aspect ratio). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Extra Wide Video Dimensions

I am by no means a Premiere power user, but I've been creating pretty simple videos for the web for several years.
Recently I've had a strange problem with the widescreen output dimensions, where the video becomes "extra wide" compared to the source file. I've spent a lot of time trying different things to fix this, with no luck.
    Details:
    1) A client sends us a .vob file they capture from TV (yes, they have approval to use the clips online).
    2) We run the clip through Cinematize (output to .mov because the .avi output always fails). The original clip is in a widescreen format (720 x 480).
    3) We import the .mov files into Premiere to adjust anything needed and output to flash.
    4) I just put the video in Premiere to 100%, did a screen capture and then opened that in Photoshop. Intead of being 720 x 480, the video dimensions are 720 x 400, so the vidoe is being compressed on its vertical axis.
    5) On output, the video shows in the widescreen dimensions, with a large black band on both the top and bottom of the clip within the window, so that it is now squished on its vertical axis.
    6) I have the added problem of having a black band appear on the top and bottom of the video on the output screen - this happens when I select flash for the output. The only way I can fix it is to change the video dimensions to 720 x 400.
Can anyone help me understand why this is happening and what I need to do to correct the problem? I've checked the knowledge base and other sources with no luck.
    Thanks!!
    Julie

    Julie,
This sounds like there is still a heat related problem going on. Other than heat, the only time that I have experienced similar was when a MoBo was headed "South." Replaced that, and added more/better cooling, and that box is still working fine.
When the thermal load on a computer gets up near critical, it *should* shutdown by default. If one is doing heavy NLE work, then things WILL heat up and in a hurry. A computer that works fine with a word processing program going, will often display its weaknesses when working in a program like Premiere.
If this has happened several times before, the BIOS chip might have been weakened to the point that it now looses its memory. Premiere just gets the machine hotter than most other programs will likely do.
Flashing the BIOS is but a stop-gap measure. Will possibly work, until the next bout of heat-stress, then it goes blank, or at least daffy. Some BIOS chips can be user-replaced, but I think I'd be shopping for a new MoBo and some heavy-duty cooling to go with it. When installing the new MoBo, bind all cables, so they do not impede the airflow. Besides looking neater, more cool air can reach components.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • White lines around cropped video QT Pro

When I crop videos with a mask white lines appear on the top and bottom of the video when viewed full screen.

    Yep.
They probably do and this has been reported since the first version of QT 7.
It seems to only appear in "full screen" mode and is an issue with the mask track shifting one pixel "down" and one pixel to the "right".
The only workaround I've found is to avoid using the pixel "correct" size for any mask layer.
Since the mask track layer can't be adjusted (Movie Properties) you'll have to experiment with sizes.
I use GraphicConverter ($30) to make my masks from a still image from the source file.

  • Video Dimension - how to see

I would like to be able to see the video dimension, whether it is 1280x720 or 384x216 or whatever when I select a video thumbnail. Is there somewhere to see that in Bridge? I have dimension enabled, and get that info in JPEG view, but not AVI or WMV, it just shows file size. In File/File Info I do not see the Video 1 and Video 2 categories that the knowledgebase search says should be there.
Am I missing something here? I am using CS3.
Using Win XP and Windows Explorer the tooltip will display dimension of video file. But with Vista it does not, and do not know how to change the tooltip information box. Any suggestions on that?

You need http://flip4mac.com/ Its a plugin for quicktime that allows you to view windows media files.
