Cropping and the snap to grid?

When cropping my crop area (square/rectangle/what-have-you) is always snapping to some sort of invisible grid.  Is this just how Lr4 works or is there a setting I have settup incorrectly?
And also, When I crop an image I have to move the image into the cropping "square" and cut of a portion of the photo but it's only part of the image I want cropped.  And when I do have the image I press "return" and the image appears to be cropped until I go to crop more of the image.  Suddenly I'm left back at the state before the previous crop.  What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!  (I hope this makes sense)

When you are satisfied, you either hit the <enter> key or click on "close" on the crop-panel. It is the bottom of the crop panel, but that is still high on the right-hand panel.
I do not find a "done" in my LR4.0.
...as I am more of a keyboard-guy than mouse-guy I always have to take a look to answer.
<esc> is the shortest way to abandon the crop endeavour and return to where you started invoking the crop (which could be library module if you used the R key).
To my knowledge you can only crop in rectangular way. You have different overlays to guide your decision-making (like spiral etc. - toggle with O key), but the result will always be some rectangle, which can be square, of course.
If you open the padlock you are free to drag the ratio, or you could choose from the drop-down menu "Aspect" one of the presets or enter your own dimensions. LR will recalculate them, though and display maybe different.
So circular is not possible.
For circular you could employ a trick e.g. in Print module: create a watermark or identity plate with circular opening, opaque for the rest.

  • How can I change the tempo (and the snap grid) of the project without altering the duration of the original audio clips?

This question is for Logic Express.
I have many very short audio clips that I recorded into my project.
I want to adjust the project tempo so that I can use the snap grid to make a beat out of my short audio clips. But when I change the project tempo, it automatically adjusts the lengths of my audio clips.
So how can I change the tempo (and the snap grid) of the project without altering the original audio clips?

The reason some files sound funny and others don't is because audio is handled a few different in Garageband depending on it's source (audio your recorded vs Apple Loops vs non Apple Loop pre recorded audio). Each of these have different color regions with different properties.  I just found this thread that might better explain it:

  • Turning off the snap-to-grid in Pages

How do I turn off the snap-to-grid Pages feature when I want to place an object precisely?

I recall reading somewhere that you have to have the grid on before the option to turn off snap to grid is available. (Older versions like PSE2 and PSE3 do not require the grid to be on to turn snap to grid off. I'm not sure which version of Elements started this change in behavior.)
Pressing the ctrl key should temporarily disable the snapping feature.

  • Need details about the Snap to Grid function

I wanted to repair a problem in a guitar track, So I opened a new track and recorded over the problem. I though that with the Snap to Grid function I could slide the new version on the old track without having to worry about the region moving horizontally. That's what's happening, it is impossible to move the track without changing the timing of the track.
    Is it normal?
    Thanks in advance

If your program is Photoshop Elements and not Premiere Elements, for your convenience, I am posting the link to the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum where you can post your Photoshop Elements 12 crop question.
    Photoshop Elements
Without further details, I am guessing that the Elements Organizer 12 is involved. You may have decided to edit a photo represented in the Elements Organizer, opened it in the Editor, and, then after the crop there, did not close out of the Editor, and went back to the Elements Organizer.

  • Simple crop and the file size triples

    Good day,
I'm trying to figure out why a video encoded using AME comes out with a much bigger file size than the original. Even if all I'm doing is using it to trim the source file. No change in settings, bit rate, dimensions etc.
In the current example I'm taking a webex recordings and trimming out some dead space in the beginning. I've lowered every setting (video and audio) I can to it's lowest potential and the resulting file looks worse than the original and is triple the file size. Both the source and the result are .mp4.
Please assist. The is making the files go from email-able to not. Making a video shorter shouldn't make it larger....
    Thank you for your help.

When encoding to virtually ANY format, you will be able to set the BITRATE. This determines how big or small an output file is. Apparently, the file you are creating is running about 3x the bitrate of the source file. You can adjust the bitrate under the VIDEO tab in AME.
Not knowing the specs of the source, I can't suggest how to export. Perhaps if you post a screen shot of your export panel in AME, that will help. Note that if you choose "HD 1080p" H.264 preset that will be much larger than say "YouTube 1080p", there are many options.
    Thank you

You can quantize them, you can option drag them with snapping, you can move the SPL to the paste location. Finally, realize you are not making unique regions ( may be good, may be bad ) normally I will work with unique regions.

I am trying to organize a zip file with a bunch of links and files. But when I drag an image file to a folder, it always "Snaps to grid" instead of just landing where I put it. All of the files are going into the same zip file but I want them visually in the space that I put them and not at the bottom of the snap to grid folder location they are looking like.  I am trying to  drag and drop files in groups so that I can group them for now, but image files always do their own "sort by" when I drag them from my web pages. Links don't do it though.  I tried resetting the folder, and deleting the DS files. No luck.

  • Why doesn't the desktop 'snap to grid' work with Snow Leopard?

I've recently upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard and I do a lot of work with photo folders which I keep organized on my desktop. Since upgrading the 'snap to grid' function in the view options of the desktop preferences has stopped working. For some reason the folders and files on the desktop keep snapping off the screen or on top of each other so that I cannot find them easily. I've had to turn off the 'snap to grid' and the desktop no longer looks organized and is not easy to navigate. Why is this happening? AND, how do I fix it? It seems to me the snap to grid shouldn't have gone out the window with an upgraded OS. I'm very organized and borderline OCD so this is FRUSTRATING me to no end!!!
    Anyone have any ideas?

It's working for me in 10.6. Try moving this file in your Home Folder/Library to the trash -- don't empty it yet.
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
When finished go back to the Desktop>View Options and select Snap to grid.
If that doesn't do it, open Terminal in utilities and copy/paste this command, then hit return. Don't attempt to type it in by hand. If you make a typo or get the spaces wrong, there could be a disaster. When finished go back to the Desktop>View Options and select Snap to grid.

  • How to make my own grid and perform a "snap to grid" effect?

Hi! I am a newbie in flash and I am trying to create a puzzle like game (a chinese puzzle game called tangram). I am wondering what kind of functions should I use to create a "triangular" grid i.e. something similar to this ? http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/2259/triangulargrid.jpg. What should I do to make the movie clips to perform the "snap to grid" effect to this grid?I have tried to draw my own grid and used the "cacheAsBitmap" function to implent it, however it doesnt seems to be working. Is there any suggestions or tutorials to this problem? Thank you very much.

Well, the project you are taking is not a simple one. It requires quite an experience with AS3. It is not a few lines of code but an understanding of Flash display list model and how objects can interact. In addition, there is no a single solution but rather wide array of possible approaches depending on use case.
To illustrate, the code below draws a mesh that replicates the image in your first post. Do you think that this is enough from the standpoint of your AS3 knowledge to get you started?
    This code needs Flash 10:
    var side:Number = 400;
    var s:Sprite = new Sprite();
    var g:Graphics = s.graphics;
    g.lineStyle(3);
    //g.beginFill(0xFF8000);
    g.drawTriangles(
         Vector.<Number>([     0, 0, side * .5, 0, side, 0,
         side * .25, side * .25, side * .75, side * .25,
         0, side * .5, side * .5, side * .5, side, side * .5,
         side * .25, side * .75, side * .75, side * .75,
0, side, side * .5, side, side, side
         Vector.<int>([
              0, 1, 3,
              1, 2, 4,
              0, 3, 5,
              1, 3, 6,
              5, 3, 6,
              1, 2, 4,
              1, 4, 6,
              2, 4, 7,
              6, 4, 7,
              5, 6, 8,
              5, 8, 10,

  • Snap to Grid behavior not working?

I recently upgraded from CS3 to CS6. To my eyes, Illustrator's Snap to Grid functionality is either broken—or I'm not understanding a (new?) option.
Use case: I set-up a grid with 1/8" spacing. I paste a 1/2" x 1/2" object from another file, or just copy and paste an existing one in the same file. I want it to sit, say, 2" from the top, and 4" from the left edge. In CS3, I could just use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the object around, and its edges would precisely snap, as expected, to the grid, with no muss or fuss. If it was an uneven size, the edges would snap, making it easy to at least align the left and top edges (for example) where I want the object to sit.
In CS6, this really just plain doesn't work—either with arrow keys, or moving the object with the mouse. The objects are always—ALWAYS—some fraction "off" in one direction or another. And yes, I know it sounds like the Snap to Grid is off, but it's not. The object moves by increments of the grid (1/8" in my example), but the object is not grid-aligned, and cannot be made to be. I can arrow-key the object all over the workspace and it won't snap properly. The only way I can find to accurately position the object is open the Transform dialog, and enter the measurements by hand.
Quite honestly, that's a pain in the butt, and it's made literally everything I do in Illustrator take roughly twice as long. This is improvement?
I am hoping I "just don't get it." That there's an option mis-set somewhere in here. Maybe it's related to moving from Windows on CS3 to Mac on CS6, who knows. What I do know is I'm starting to hate Illustrator every time I have to fire it up these days.
Anyone else see this? Anyone have any idea how to fix it? File a bug report?
ADDED:  In playing with this just after my original posting, it appears that the described issues occur only with groups of objects. For example, a 1/2" x 1/2" icon composed of a square for its outer dimensions, with some other stuff layed on top, then grouped, and moved as a whole. (Although whether it's grouped doesn't actually seem to matter—an ungrouped, multi-select of the same sort behaves the same way.)

Use Preview Bounds didn't help, but your raster effects question got me wondering... I am using a rounded corner effect in every instance where I have observed this. At least with a couple of quick tests, removing the rounded corner effect via the Appearance panel seems to have kicked it into expected behavior. Interesting.
I'd still make a case that this is a bug, and to the best of my recollection, it is NOT how it worked in CS3; I use the rounded corner effect pretty regularly... I would certainly have noticed this "in the old days."
Thanks for the clue. I'll find a way to deal with this knowing where the issue seems to be. I also just filed a bug report on it; I feel strongly that it is one.

  • Smart Guides without the snapping

I would want to see them but without the snapping.
    Ben

At least up to Illustrator 13, there is a trick or rather a lousy hack that involves the Snap to Grid command and its talent to temporarily disable any Smart Guides functionality. The following has to be prepared in case you're going to execute the hack as an action:
    1. In the Actions Palette, create a new Action set. Call it 'Disable Smart Guides'.
    2. Within the Action set, create a new action. Call it 'Disable Smart Guides', assign an F-key to the action, let's say F3, and hit Enter.
    3. In the Actions Palette menu, select the Insert Menu Item command and go to View > Snap to Grid
    4. Stop recording the action
    5. Go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid
    6. In the Gridline Every text box, enter 0,01 mm. It's the minimum value you can set here.
    7. In the Subdivisions text box, enter 1000, the max. value accepted here.
Now, take any document, turn on Smart Guides, make sure Snap to Grid is turned off, and start drawing a path. Hit F3 and continue drawing the path. Hit F3 again as soon as you need your Smart Guides again.
As you can see, after hitting F3 to enable Snap to Grid, the path will not be interrupted when placing the next point. And as you've got a kind of microscopic Grid settings, Snap to Grid has almost no influence on where the points are placed. In fact, it still snaps, but due to the absurd Grid settings it's rather negligible.
This palpable workaround was originally invented by a young lady located around Edmonton in Canada.

  • Photoshop CS6 Snap to Grid not working.

    Hey everyone,
I recently acquired Photoshop and wanted to try my hand at some pixel art, but I can't get the snap to grid to work.
The pixel grid works fine - which is great, when I'm making something tiny, but I am trying to draw with a 5 size pixel, and my grid won't work.
The brush still snaps to the pixel grid - and I have no idea how to change the preferences for the pixel grid, slash turn it off, slash anything.
I tried turning off the 'Snap to vector and pixel grid' in the preferences menu, but it is still snapping to the pixel grid.
    Please advise?

New to GarageBand 3, the ability to work without the snap to grid. Now the snap to grid feature only works if the song position read out is set to musical time. (see the little icon of the note and the icon of the clock next to the song position info in the main control bar.)
Switch to musical time to get the snap to grid to work.
If this is already set, then something else is wrong.

  • Snap to grid not working

I am going crazy with the snap to grid function not working. I have read through all of the topics I could find on the forums and nothing has worked. I am working on a huge grid with a shape needing to be snapped into each space and nothing snaps at all. I have tried the un-tick align to pixel grid, the un-tick align new object to pixel grid...nothing works. None of the shapes align to the grid.
Please, has anyone any suggestions of what to do next? I cannot envisage moving a thousand shapes into a grid accurately manually...
    Suggestions will be much appreciated!

If they are jump in then you are snapping to something. Usually snap to pint is overridden by grid.
Do a view >> show grid if you have not so you can see the grid.
A screenshot would help, so we can give you good advice.
