Cropping by pixel size

In the full version of Photoshop I can crop an image 1600 x 1200 pixels, then save for web. It’s a simple two step operation that seems impossible in Elements. First because you can’t crop by pixels, only by proportion. Then because the save-to-web feature seems to result in a massive gif file, not a small jpg. Please tell me I am wrong because I can’t justify £600 on full Photoshop for my very basic requirement.

What version of photoshop elements are you using?
You should be able to save jpegs using File>Save for Web
Also, you should be able to enter the dimensions in pixels for cropping.
You can also use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (set to Fixed Size) for more exact cropping if you just want to crop part of the image.

  • My crop tool in CS5 does not give the option to crop by pixel size

How do I get the crop tool to give me the option of cropping by specific pixel size.  Nothing appears in the dropdown menu except standard crop sizes in inches.

Have you tried entering the numbers with the suffix "px" in the entry fields?

  • Can't crop to pixel size!?

I'm relatively new to Aperture - considering converting the workflow in the photo studio from PC to Mac, but right away I seem to have hit a roadblock.
When editing a hires JPEG or Raw file, I often have need to crop down to a 72-dpi image of some size to use as an email sample, etc...
The crop tool apparently only allows one to crop in inches.
Is there a way to change this on the fly - switch the crop tool back & forth from making 8x10's at 300 dpi to screen-res 600-pixel wide images?

Karl's right about how the crop tool works in Aperture. But I think it's a great solution: crop how you want the photo to look, regardless of measurements, then export to whatever export setting you want. Settings can be in pixels or inches, at whatever resolution (72dpi /300dpi).
I prefer this method over Photoshop or Capture One. The only time you'll need to change your crop tool is for a different ratio or moving the framing. In those cases, just make a different version of the image.
For large projects, I create keywords such as, 5x7, 4x5, etc. and tag the crops, then create smart albums to display only the 5x7's, for example.
The crop tool actually doesn't do inches but rather
proportions. The actual size is then determined by
    your export.
Suggestion: you can specify a number of settings for
your exports, e.g. 600 x 600 px. Your images will
then be exported with a max size of 600 px wide or
    high (whichever is higher).
Not a perfect solution, I'll grant you that.
    Cheers,
    k.

  • Cropping images to exact pixel sizes

I'm a Photoshop user but being a recent Mac convert I'm having a go with the Aperture 2 trial.
I'm a bit confused about how to crop an image to an exact pixel size. I've watched the video tutorial several times over but I still can't achieve what I want. So ...
    * My original image is 2816 x 2112
    * I select a 4 x 3 aspect ratio using the Crop HUD
    * I pull the rectangular box out to take in the section of the image I want to crop out of the original
    * I want a finished image of 500 x 400 pixels
    * I go to the Crop field in the Adjustments tab and change Width to 500 and the Height to 400
    * The crop area on the image ends up as a small box in the bottom left hand corner and when I hit Return, all I end up with is that area of the image inside the box when what I want is the originally selected crop area but at 500 x 400 pixels
    * If I stretch the rectangular box out to cover the original area, the pixel dimensions go up again beyond 500 x 400
Which part of the process am I missing?
    Thanks for anyone's advice,
    Mark

What you type in that box is just the ratio not the actual pixel number. And the box does not like to many digits in there. A ratio of 4 x 5 would work perfectly fine in your case, but more complicated ratios like 21 x 50 don't work.
To get 500 x 400 px you must then export your image with settings that restrict your image, eg, to fit into a 500 x 500 px box.
The idea behind this two-step approach is that you might think of 500 x 400 px output right now, but by doing the actual pixel generation at a later point, you can always easily export later at 1000 x 800 px if you need a higher resolution version with the same aspect ratio.

  • Cropping while maintaining pixel size

Just got LR5 - wish it was as intuitive as PSE.  A few initial questions:
    1) When I crop in LR, I see no way to maintain the original pixel size as is easily done in PSE.  Is it not possible?
    2) When I select "Help" or press F1 in LR, I get LR Help, however the Search feature doesn't list LR as one of the Product selections in the dropdown box.  I did register LR.
    3) When you make an adjustment in LR, isn't there a way to Undo it?  I thought you might be able to delete it from the history.
    4) What is the best free source for learning LR, preferably video.  I did see the ones by J. Kost on the Adobe TV website, but they weren't very detailed/complete.
    Thanks.

Thanks dj.  A couple of follow-ups on your responses then I'll mark it as correct:
    1) So when I crop in PSE with the pixel size set at the size of the original, that is not really buying anything?  I don't think it does a resample, just decreases the Document Size by a corresponding amount.  There is no advantage as far as photo quality or anything else to keeping the pixel dimensions at the larger size (of the original)?
    3) When you "undo" by double-clicking on the name of the slider, is this a true undo (i.e. the history item is deleted) or does it just create another history item that offsets the original adjustment?
And a couple of other items on recommended ways to do things:
    - Would you recommend when making adjustments to show both the before and after in the panel to see how it is changed?
    - Do you personally use shortcuts all the time?  From watching videos from J. Kost and some other guy whose name I don't recall, they both seem obsessed, to the point that it is annoying, with using shortcut keys.  There are so many of them that I don't see how it is a shortcut if you have to look them up.
    Thanks dj.

  • How do I change the pixel size of my photos?

    Hello,
Please give me step by step instructions on how to change the pixel size of my photos from the time I log in.
    Thank you.

    There are basically two ways.
Image>Image Size... This will adjust the quality of the image, allowing you to adjust the pixel dimensions and keep the full image.
In the tool bar on left side of screen 5th icon down looks like a sliding picture frame. That is the crop tool, that will adjust the pixel size of a document by removing a portion of the image, allowing you to get rid of portions of the image you do not want.
There are some other ways to accomplish the above, but these are the basics that everyone needs to know. I recommend playing with these tools on a copy of an image, that way you won't be afraid of destroying an image.

  • IE 8 cropping one pixel of left side of Flash

I have a mysterious problem with Flash in Internet Explorer 8.
We have previously been using the code listed below to center Flash campaign sites on the page. The page did not have any doctype declared (not pretty, I know), but it worked fine across all browsers...
Then came IE 8. Suddenly 1px of the left side of the Flash/SWF is cropped of. I found that adding a doctype to the page fixed the problem, but that caused the content to no longer center vertically (in some browsers).
If I replace the Flash with a simple JPG image, it displays correctly - so this is related to the #¤%@ SWF / IE8 combo.
What are you guys using for centering your sites?
    Some observations
    Without doctype declared:
Works in Firefox, and IE 7
IE 8 and IE 8 in compatibility mode crops 1 pixel from left side
    With HTML 4.1 Transitional doctype:
Is not vertically centered in IE 8 compatibility mode, IE 7 or Firefox
IE 8 in compatibility crops 1 pixel from left side
    With XHTML 1.0 Transitional doctype:
    Works in IE 8
Is not vertically centered in IE 8 compatibility mode, IE 7 or Firefox
    The code causing the problem
(doctypes are left in commented out - just to show which ones I've tested with)

Well, I found MY problem. It was a center tag. I had <center></center> around my Flash movie. So I put it in a table and now it's works. I looked over your code, but I don't see a center tag so maybe this won't help you. You did help me to fix mine so if I can help in any way let me know.
Update: I noticed that you centered your data cell, maybe you could try centering the whole table.

  • Exporting Versions to a specific pixel size

I want to export files for a slideshow that requires a pixel size of 1900 x 1200 , can it be done in Aperture ? , I have tried modifying the export preset , it does not work with (Fit Within ) is there another way ?
    Thanks
    Ray

    Trythis,
    What exactly is failing?
Your 1900x1200 size is a very strange size. That's not the 3:2 aspect ratio of an SLR or the 4:3 aspect ratio of point-and-shoot cameras. Also, Aperture will not enlarge pictures by choosing "fit within", since a smaller picture already "fits within". I.e., if you have a 640x480 picture, that already "fits within" 1900 pixels so Aperture will not make it bigger.
Also, Aperture will not crop your pictures on export. You may have to crop each picture first so that it has a 19:12 aspect ratio, and then "fit within" 1900 pixels. If the aspect ratio of a picture is 19:12 and the picture is larger than 1900 pixels, Aperture should properly reduce the size to 1900x1200, based on the aspect ratio.

  • Sorting images by pixel size?

is there a way to sort images by pixel size (ie, all pis over 640x480)? i can't see any way in finder, vitaminSEE or iphoto to sort images this way. am i missing something? or could someone recommend a grogram that can do this (preferably freeware)? thx

    zzwhitejd:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It may be how Picassa and windows handles thumbnails as opposed to OS X. When you imported directly from the PC you might have imported the support files that, on the Mac, contained in the Resource Fork of the file. If you can try copying some of the files again to a folder on the desktop first and see what you get in the way of the number of files.
To get rid of those duplicates already in the library you can try using Duplicate Annihilator or iPhoto Diet. In either case make a backup copy of the iPhoto LIbrary folder just in case the results are not what you expected.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Aperture 2.x and Nikon D3 Pixel Size issues

I've noticed that Aperture 2.x does not use the correct pixel size for Nikon D3 images: they are read by Aperture as 4272x2828 instead of 4256x2832 as they should be. Exported images are similarly incorrect. (This also creates an awkward aspect ration of 151:100).
After the problems with Aperture displaying D2x files shot in High-Speed Crop mode I find this really irritating. Is Aperture slightly blowing up the image in the longer dimension to gain these extra pixels? It makes me wonder if Aperture/Apple can't get the basics like the size of the picture right what else might be getting misread/mishandled behind the scenes.

ts, i know this issue has been discussed many times on this forum, however it still is a problem. it might not be an issue if all you use is the file created by aperture, however if you are retouching the same image (or a series of images) converted by different applications, this becomes a serious issue.
also, in several previous threads you find statements such as "there is more to a raw file than nx or photoshop displays". this is true and false. if aperture would render more sensor pixels than capture or photoshop, the "cropped" image out of photoshop or capture would exactly (pin accurate) match at least parts of the "oversized" export from aperture. this is not the case.
for me, this issue (even though often discussed) is still not solved and seams to apply to raw from various cameras, nikon and canon. in my case, it applies to nikon D200, D300 and D3.
every time i have to create layered illustrations, retouching work, layer different exposures in photoshop (anything that requires several instances of the same image rendered by different applications), i can't use aperture adjusted images. in some cases, creating two version in aperture (then export and overlay in photoshop) can do the trick, in other cases you would like to use the advantages of different applications (nx for ca, aperture for global adjustments, psd for lens correction etc etc).
i understand, this might be a minor issue (if at all) for most, however if your core business is image retouching, and you deal with thousands of images from various photographers, pixel accuracy can become a serious issue (feel free to call it a BFD if you like).

  • Reducing pixel size of saved photos

I'm very new to my iMac. I've saved several dozen photos in iPhoto and just tried to upload one of them to a boating website. It was apparently too 'big' in that it had too many pixels. My question: How do I copy a photo in a reduced pixel 'size' so I can upload it to a website with a pixel limit? Thx,
    Tony

You would probably have to crop the photo to the correct ratio first
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165597
After the photo is cropped, then you would follow the directions above to export it.
Put the length and height in pixels in the appropriate boxes and export to the desktop.
If you need more help then give more info on the exact size of the photo you need exported.

  • Aperture changing pixel size after using Retouch/Repair/Clone tool?

I apologize if this is a stupid question - I'm new to using Aperture and have a rudimentary knowledge (at best) about the mechanics of Aperture.
I use the retouch tool on a portion of my photo, and the pixel size is reduced.  I want to maintain the original 12.0megapixels. How do I work with the photo without changing the pixel size - or, how can I restore the orginal pixel size after editing the photo?
I've also cropped the photo, constraining the aspect ratio at 4:5.
Here is the file info before I start working with it:
And after using the retouch, this happens:

    Frank Caggiano wrote:
Again this is not normal Aperture behavior, this doesn;t occur on my system. If you could post the screen shot of the adjustments it might help.
Sure - Here is a sample image. It is not a RAW file. It appears to be happening in every image in the library. I made a new library and it appears to be happening in the same pattern. I'm in Aperture, opened a photo which was imported directly into Aperture from camera.
Now, I'm going to crop to 4:5 ratio - from what I'm hearing, crop should not effect the 12.0 mp?
Notice how the MP is now 10.6?
    Now, I'll apply auto enhance:
In this case, it looks like cropping does effect the pixel size. It's a different image from what I was using before.
Now, I use the retouch tool:
The MPs are now 9.7 - it keeps getting smaller and smaller!
When you crop, is it normal for the MPs to reduce?
Thanks so much for your help, I'm so frustrated.

  • I am confused with optimum Pixel sizes?

    For instance
When placing photos in the web for sale and to avoid having these "stolen" what is the best pixel size AND

Next I'll have to find out where in Photoshop ELements I can do this as Ive only just downloaded the trial
    Help

Generally I use something like 900 x 600 for the web. If you use Expert Mode:
    File >> Save For Web
The image will be optimized. Select jpeg and medium quality. That should keep the file size under 100k, which is ideal for web site viewing with fast downloads. You can compare the potential file size by looking at the optimized preview window alongside the original size.
If anyone downloads such an image only a very small quality print could be made e.g. 3 inches by 2 inches at 300 ppi.
For projection or viewing on a large wide screen something like 2000 x 1333 at 72ppi usually works well.
It really depends on the original aspect ratio. Mine are all 3:2, hence the dimensions above, but cameras differ so use the measurements for the long edge as a guide.

I have a 500px x 500px document open but the size that it looks on Photoshop at 100% does not match the size that is 500px on the web. How do I change it on Photoshop CS6 so that it will give me an accurate display of the pixel size?
(I don't know if this needs to be mentioned but I am working on the new macbook pro and just downloaded the new photoshop update for retina displays).
    Thank you in advance!!!

Ask in teh PS forum. Generally, though, pixels are pixels. Perhaps you simply have things backwards - as far as I know by default Safari doubles image sizes on Retina devices, which can lead to such discrepancies. There's an option for that in the prefs.
