Cropping corrected photos without using Scale?

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, or there's a potential problem with ACR...
Take a wide angle raw photo with converging or diverging verticals, and apply a lens correction profile, then turn on the grid and straighten up the verticals, possibly applying a bit of Rotate while you're at it. Done? Right.
You'll notice that you may have lost quite a bit off the top or bottom of the image, depending on which way and how much you moved the sliders. To get it back again, I've been using Scale to shrink the image until I can see the image edge. A side effect of using Scale is that the opposite edge is now quite a way inside the canvas, and the processed image will have lost a lot of its original resolution.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to grab the image and centre it in the canvas, or hope ACR did this for me, so I don't need to shrink to see all edges. Am I missing something, or is this a 'feature' of Lens Correction?

Yes, except I'm already one step up from the default!
I submit many of my shots for stock, and I've always upsized my 12MP images by one step (43%) using ACR quite successfully. Fortunately, they've dropped their minimum requirements from 16MP to 8MP, so any seriously cropped images will now make the grade (but not necessarily the top shelf).
I wonder what the interpolation implications of a 2-step increase would be, considering that much of the image has already been downsized by the vertical distortion adjustment. Would the accuracy be maintained, or would detail be lost in the compression phase?
That's a rhetorical question, by the way, but please feel free to respond if you know the answer!

  • How can I upload multiple photos without using an app?

I'm a special education teacher, and I teach a photography lab that teaches students how to scan and edit photos. We use the school's set of Ipad2's in order to crop the photos since the majority of students I have don't have the hand eye coordination neccisary to crop using a desktop computer and mouse. The problem I'm running into, however, is that our IT department wont let me download any apps onto the iPads. I've asked on six seperate occasions in order for them to update the iPads to ios7 and to give teachers the permission to install apps-- the first request coming at the start of the school year-- and they havent responded to any of them, so I'm not holding my breath.
Currently, I'm uploading all of the photos my students scan to my personal dropbox account, and the students access that and download each photo individually onto their ipads. Not the easiest thing for special education students to do, but its doable. I have not found an easy way to get the cropped photos off the ipads, however. Any ideas? I could attach each photo to an email, allthough thats more trouble than its worth most times. Dropbox will only allow me to upload one photo at a time, and keeps overwriting the photo I previously uploaded with the new one if I try to upload a second photo. Photo stream is the obvious answer, but icloud is disabled on all the ipads and only IT can turn it back on, something they've been unwiling to do

I worked in IT on the university level for four years so it's really frustrating to see more safeguards in place in a public school district any university. If we're trying to teach these kids to be ready for real life and then block out and don't let them use half the technology they're going to encounter in real life, well I just don't get that. But that's another rant for another time.
How I do it is I save all of the photos my students scan onto my external hard drive, then transfer them to my personal computer and upload them to dropbox using Dropbox for windows (or whatever the desktop application is called) . I then have my students go to dropbox.com on the iPad, login as me, and go through each photo, saving each to the iPad as they go.
I should have said upfront that when I try to connect the iPad to my personal computer it charges the iPad but won't recognize under my computer or show up in iTunes, so I am unable to see any of the data on it. I'm pretty sure it's not the 30 pin connector that's malfunctioning because I've tried with two of them. I can only check if it registers with iTunes on my personal computer because I can't download iTunes on school computers since I don't have administrator privileges

  • Importing Photos without using Aperture or iPhoto

    Hi all,
I am preparing to migrate from the cuddly world of iPhoto into the big bad world of Aperture. During the transition I was hoping to continue using both programs (especially given the excellent photobook and slideshow functions of iPhoto) and was going to start importing photos and using referenced masters so that both iPhoto and Aperture can look at the same sets of data.
Are there any programs out there that can automate the import of photos from a camera and allow me to do things like autosplit events or change all the filenames to reflect the photos? I often have several weeks worth of photos that I import and it would be nice to do this without creating a single large folder without everything in it.

In the Aperture Preferences you can decide what quality of Previews you generate and also elect to share them with the iLife and iWork applications
Previews are jpegs which are updated as you process your Raws and are a convenient way of sharing the pics with other apps without the whole Export process.
You can access the Previews in iPhoto via the File -> Show Aperture Library and drag them over. Set iPhoto to a referenced Library and they will take up no extra disk space.
In almost all cases they will be sufficient quality for an iPhoto book.
If I am going to use shared previews could I not just import everything directly into the Aperture library?
    Yes.
    Regards
    TD

  • Can visitors download full-sized photos without using the iWeb photo page?

Neither the photo page nor album page suits the needs of my site, so here's what I would like to do:
Import my pictures into a blank page. Instruct visitors to right click to save.
Will they be saving a full-size version of the photo? Or will it save a thumbnail?
An alternative is to make the thumbnail itself a link to a page with a larger version of the same photo.
By not using a pre-formatted photo or album page, I do not have access to the iWeb download photo quality selector (it's grayed out in the menu).
    Thanks for your help.

The quality that you upload will be the quality that viewers can download.

  • How can I import photos without using iPhoto?

I'm 37, a lifetime PC/Windows user and have finally made the switch to Mac after years of using every other Apple product, including iPod, iPhone and Apple TV, which, by the way, must be the most under-marketed and best value Apple product ever. I can't believe more people don't have Apple TV in their homes.
With PCs, I was used to importing pictures to my hard drive and then viewing and editing them with whatever software applications I wanted. With my Mac, I notice that when I insert my SD card, iPhoto starts and asks me to import, which I agree. Unfortunately, it imports the images to an iPhoto folder that I can't easily access from another program, such as PhotoshopElements. I have read how to use Finder to navigate to these imported images in the iPhoto library ("Show Package Content") and then I copy the folder of images and paste it to a folder in my "Pictures" directory in Finder, but I find this tedious and also redundant as I now I understand I basically have two copies of every image, one for iPhoto Library and the other for accessing via other programs, such as Photoshop.
Is there anyway I can simply import images straight to a folder on my hard drive?
Also, if I do choose to access these images via iPhoto, am I correct in assuming iPhoto will automatically create a duplicate folder, just for accessing in the iPhoto library? If so, isn't this a waste of hard drive space? Can this be avoided?
Thank you for any and all assistance.
    Kevin

Hi Kevin,  I am in the same boat as you having been buying PCs for the last 25 years and managing IT for SMEs I have now purchased my first Mac (mac mini).  My move to Mac started with the iPhone that led to the iPad then like you I succumbed to the beauty of the Apply TV that then led to the purchase of an Airport Express.  The love affair had to conclude in the purchase of a Mac!
For many years I have used the feature to have the date photos taken created as a folder and all photos from that date placed in that folder.  Every year I create a new folder for that year and the import on PC creates the daily folders to hold photos …
I was just about to ask how I can keep doing this and realised it’s not as important as I thought – I’ll still create a folder for each year and just have the photos dumped in there.  I can sort in Finder by date taken and catalogue in any way I won’t.
I’ll still use folders rather than iPhoto as I want other software like XBMC (on other OS)  to read the photos.
Thanks for letting me rant – I thought I will post anyway as this is my first Apple post and it may assist others.

  • How can I crop a photo without losing quality?

I am trying to crop photos and then have them printed to poster size.
The pictures are all 1.2 mb or larger. When I crop them the resulting picture (jpeg) is so small it lacks the resolution for enlarging to poster size.
Is there a way to crop a picture while retaining the quality so it can be enlarged?
    Thanks

iPhoto has a dpi limit that it uses for alerting users that the resolution of the photo may not be enough for quality prints. The screenshot below are those limits in iPhoto's preference file:
However, when ordering prints thru Apple that limit seems to have been raised a bit.
The following are the resolution limits and warning that Apple has put on 4 different sized images I prepared for printing to give you an ideal of what to shoot for. Remember, many have used image smaller than what iPhoto warned at and were happy with them. It's all subjective.

  • Can one import a photo without using iphoto?

I want to import photos into a keynote presentation. The only options from clicking on 'media' are to import from iphoto or photobooth. Can I import directly from the folder in which the photo exists, without having to import into iphoto first (which just adds an unnecessary stage in the workflow)?

    Use +Import menu>Choose…+ or +command, shift v+.

  • TS4180 Issues correcting photo orientation using Windows Photo Gallery

Photos downloaded from iPhone 4 to PC running Windows 7 can't be saved after editing (ie. rotation).  Message:  "This photo can't be saved because of a problem with the photo's file properties."  When I close that dialog box, another comes up with the message giving the error code: 0x80070057 saying that the photo can't be saved.  Someone suggested opening the photo in Paint and saving it as a jpeg file, but my photos are already in jpeg format.  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks...

As long as you've backed up your photos, what you use is really a matter of personal preference. To avoid duplicates, pick one program. Getting rid of duplicates that you already have is probably going to mean going through the photos one by one.
For problems with Windows Software, you're probably better off posting on a Windows forum.
    Best of luck.

I am using system 10.7.3 and my I photo 9.2.3 keeps crashing upon start up.  Does anyone know how to correct this without losing my photos?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Can i make a book in iPhoto without using any of the built in layout templates, which are too limiting when i have already cropped my pictures to show just what I want. Ideally I just want to drag and drop and arrange and size the pictures myself

If you have Pages you can create customs pages for your book as TD suggested. If you have Pages from iWork 09 or 11 this app will add 80 or so additional frames to those offered:  Frames and Strokes Installer. Don't use it on the latest Pages version, however.
This tutorial shows how to create a custom page with the theme's background: iP11 - Creating a Custom Page, with the Theme's Background for an iPhoto Book.  Once the page is complete to get it into iPhoto as a jpeg file follow these steps:
Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 300 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. For books to be printed choose 300 dpi.

  • I I made a PDF fie to preview, but am still apprehensive to actually order the book, as I have ordered some prints of photos after I thought i had them cropped correctly and prints returned with heads, half of bodies have a book formatted and ready to buy

I have formatted a photo book, but am apprehensive to push the "buy" button as I have ordered prints that I thought were cropped correctly, and they returned with heads cut off and half of bodies mising.  I have put the book on a PDF file as instucted, please reassure me that if everything looks right there, that is the way the book will look??

If the PDF looks good then the printed copy should be OK.  The only problem you might run into is the color rendering.  As long as none of your photos use the sRGB profile and not the Adobe RGB color profile the color should be fine.
On those prints that were cropped incorrectly: did you copy them to the print size ordered before uploading for printing? If not then they will be cropped by the printing equipment and you'll lose part of the top and bottom of the print (for landscape prints).

  • Cropping Photos to Use with iMovie?

    Hello group-
I've been away a while and need to be reminded of something basic: When inserting photos from my iPhoto library into a new iMovie project, do I FIRST need to crop/constrain the photos in that 4 x 3 (DVD) shape? In other words, before I drag a photo into my movie project, must it first have the 4X3 crop?
A related question: The idea of cropping 800 or so photos in that 4 X 3 shape is daunting. Plus -- I wouldn't want the photos to retain that cropping indefinitely. Does anyone have any ideas about shortcuts here? Actually, I just thought of one way to manage this issue: I'll duplicate the entire folder of photos that I want to use in the movie. I'll crop those photos as needed for the movie. Once I'm done with the movie, I'll delete the second folder of photos leaving me with my original folder of photos with their unconstrained original dimensions.
Is that the easiest/best way to go?
Thanks in advance for your help. Hello to Lennart!
    Diana

    Hello Diana and welcome back.
You could set Ken Burns to do a slight zoom, just enough to avoid the black bars on the photo. Play around with one uncropped photo until you are satisfied. Then import the rest with the same setting.
The above works only if the subject is (more or less) centered in the picture. If the subject isn't centered, you need to crop 4:3 and import without any zooming in Ken Burns. Hopefully that's just a few of the 800 pictures.
My new digital camera takes 4:3 pictures, so those are not any problem. But all my old scanned ones are 3:2. And I have hundreds (if not thousands) that are not yet scanned. Sigh.

  • Transfer photos from one imac to another without using the cloud or photostream.

    Hi,
I've got 4,389 photos in my iphoto library on my new imac. Most of them are personal but a few maybe 500 are from my work. I need to get the personal photos safely out of this iphoto library permanently and onto my old (now personal) computer.
How can I do that without using the cloud or photostream? I've tried using these things in the past and I simpl can't understand them. I got into an awful mess with them and completely confused. I would prefer to just put the photos I want to transfer onto a USB stick or external hard drive and transfer them that way. The problem is I can't understand how to do that!!! I've no problem transferring other files in this manner I just can't figure out how to do it in iphoto.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain this in a simple way to me.
    Thanks end Regards,
    Valerie.

It's in the Pictures folder, what are you finding so difficult:
