Cropping CS6
The cropping tool does not resize the image, using the drop down menu a 5X7 actually remains at 11.5 X 16.1. The only way I can get this crop tool to actually resize is to create a crop size and resolution and save it as a preset. In CS5 you just put in the hieght, width and resolution and that's what it resized to. Is this how CS6 is designed to operate?
Try including the measurement you're after by typing 5in x 7in
Otherwise Photoshop will crop to the ratio you're specifying.

Photoshop CC classic mode is different to CS6
I am currently using a trial of CC. I want to upgrade but the main issue putting me off is the crop tool, I have to crop a lot of images and this new method makes it more difficult.
I have always used classic mode. By default in CS6 the crop bounding box is already placed on the image. However on CC the default classic mode the crop bounding box isnt placed on the image, I have to drag it each time.
Is there a way to have the box on the image by default?
The only way I can see is to turn off classic mode but then theres the issue of having to use the annoying method of moving the canvas rather than the crop box and I dont want to use that

CS6 Camera Raw - I can now only crop using aspect ratio in the custom crop setting rather than being able to set the dims in cm and inches? anyone know how to revert? ever since installing new mac operating system things have been strange!

I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)

Anyway I initially started a thread in the forums which lead me here regarding the use of opacity masks, I'm having real problems finding a solution to my specific problem.
I've got 2 issues I'm trying to solve, the first is how do I show just a portion an object above another even though it sits in a layer behind.
The second is I have an object with a linear gradient applied and I want to add yet another gradient just to a certain part of that object in order to make it fade out in a certain way.
I've spent hours pouring through the help topics but nothing seems to fit my exact problem, sorry for asking questions here but I'm really stumped and I think an opacity mask would do the trick, I'm just not sure how to execute it.

CS6 Image Corrution During Cropping
The image went funny while in cropping selection mode then would work fine after hitting return to accept the selection and finish the crop. This happened on two different images.

Turn off OpenGL in the prefs and update your graphics driver before re-enabling it.

PS CS6: cropping in portrait modus?
Hi,
see my screeenshot in Adobe CS6, Photoshop -- cropping an area in portrait size 2x3 and NOT landscape 3:2.
Why ignores PS this setting and shows me first a landscape area in 3:2 instead of the chosen portrait area in 2:3?
Yes, I can rotate the selection via "x" -- but that's cumbersome.
Any help?
mtempFrom your screen shot, it looks like you're using CS6. They have made a lot ot improvements on cropping in CC. CS6 was a big change in the cropping style, and did have some issues. You can change the direction of the crop by clicking on the round arrow by the aspect ratio. It is confusing as the numbers don't change. They will still read 3X2. Most people would assume the first to be the horizontal direction, but this doesn't seem to be the case with CS6, It's fixed in CC.

What is wrong with the crop tool in Photoshop CS6? (picture included)
Ever since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and started to use the new crop tool, I get this quite interesting visual error and some artifacting.
I didn't have the problem with the crop tool in the previous versions of Photoshop.
What can be the issue?Seems like a GPU problem. Can you try going into Photoshop Preferences, disable GPU acceleration and try if that fixes it?

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing when I select Horizontal Type Tool, Rectangular Marquee Tool and Crop T
and probably more, but when you consider how little functionality the loss of those three buttons give me, you can understand how little use I am getting out of CS6 so far.
It makes no difference whether I use 32-bit or 64-bit.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a relatively new Toshiba Satellite C660-1LD with 2.53 gigahertz Intel Core i3 M 380 with 3892 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory* with onboard Intel(R) HD Graphics.

I sometimes get a message on load saying that Photoshop cannot find my 3D settings (although my Graphics card has 3D capability), but as I'm not using Photoshop's 3D editing tools, this is no issue to me at present.
Any other information I can give you, I will. As you can imagine, this is hugely frustrating, and making Photoshop unusable.It's not picking up my card. heres the data...

I have never used crop marks before. I am trying to do an Illustrator tutorial intended for CS3. The instructions say:
"Select the square, and in the Menu go Filter > Create > Crop Marks. Increase the square size to 4.125in by 3.875in. This square will be the size of our image, which is 1/8in larger than the crop marks. This ensures no white-space when you or the printers cut these labels out."
I found a way to make crop marks in CS6 using effect>cropmarks. The problem is when I increase the size of the square it also increases the crop marks. But it says in the square will be 1/8in larger than the crop marks. What am I doing wrong?The instruction sounds a little odd they are referring to a bleed that is normally 1/8 inch larger than the caual trim size.
Their description is misleading from what isee since the neglected to mention bleed. Of course if everything is within the safe area then there is no need for bleed.

Why when using the crop tool in Photoshop CS6 does it suddenly change the layer and file format?
I really need help with this. If I open a jpg in PS6 and crop it, the file transforms from a locked background layer to Layer 0 which is not locked. Then if I want to Save as a jpg I must flatten the layers as it is now a PSD file. SO frustrated! Anyone know what's going on?
Enable the Delete Cropped Pixels in the crop tool options up top—this is the phrasing in my PS-CC. I assume PS-CS6 has a similar crop tool option.
If you don’t delete the cropped pixels, they are just hidden, then a layer needs to be created to hold the hidden pixels. -
Ease of rotating and cropping images in CS6
There is much I like about the new crop: Rotating the image instead of the box is SO much easier and the straighten option is a great time saver.
But in one instance, I'm finding cropping in CS6 to be harder: Cropping images that are not correctly oriented in the first place. Rotating an image 90-degrees was a snap in CS2: Alt-I/E/0. The shortcut keys are gone in CS6, so using the rotation command is no longer quick.
But I can do it in the crop box, right? True -- but not easily. The image is landscape, the crop box is portrait. With the crop tool selected, holding the shift key down to get fixed-increment rotations doesn't work: Pressing the SHIFT key changes the cursor from rotation to the crop cursor. To get the rotation, I have to start rotating the image and then press SHIFT to get 15-degree increments. A few moments later, I have rotated the image into portrait orientation -- and the crop box is now centered on the image, but it is set to crop the middle. I have to drag the handles out to get approximately what I want: The full image in the crop box. (What I want is what I would get if I rotate the image with the Rotate command, then control-zero to fill the screen, and then select the crop tool.)
We rotate a lot of images. It's easy to do in CS2 and the two approaches I've found for CS6 are both awkward. The new crop tool has replaced the dual arrows in older versions (to swap the horizontal and vertical sizes) with a rotation arrow. I think you should restore the arrows (and their function) -- then use the rotate button to rotate the image, not the crop box. (Isn't that the design center for the new crop box? We're moving the image, not the crop box.)Howard, thanks for the tip about the X key; didn't realize it worked that way when the crop tool is active. But in this case I had set the crop box dimenions, so the crop box starts out with the correct orientation. Having played with this for a day, I conclude that the best approach for this task is to restore the old keyboard conventions for image rotation and rotate the image before launching the crop tool.
I stand by my observation that the rotate key should affect the image, not the crop box because that is consistent with the new cropping paradigm: We rotate the image, not the crop box. I realize making a change this late in the development cycle is awkward -- but if CS6 ships with this behavior, it will become even harder to change later -- and the user interface should be as consistent as possible.
Noel, you are correct: The images are coming from scanned film. All frames get scanned with the same orientation. I want to avoid the "Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this. Doctor: Then don't do that!" scenario. Granted: If images are "correctly" oriented, this issue doesn't arise. But not all images are oriented correctly and CS6 should be at least as graceful in handling the task as previous versions. -
Crop Dimensions Issue CS5 vs CS6
I am transitioning from Photoshop CS5.5 CS6.
Using CS6, I was cropping a photo and I defined an exact pixel dimension of 94px x 99px with an output 72ppi.When I went to resample it in the Image dialogue box to 94px x 99px. I was able to get the desired width of 94px but the height ended up being 89px. If I cropped it to the correct dimensions, why can't I do the same when I re-sample it?
I went back to CS5.5 and it did it flawlessly. I can't figure out what is going on with CS6.I tried it with Constraint Proportions on before. I went back to the image file again and apply the cropping, restraining the size to 94px x 99px in CS6 and saved the file without the image resampling.
I just notice when I apply the cropping again in CS5, it cropped the picture slightly differently and got the results I wanted after resampling.
So if I restrained the dimensions when I cropped the image in both C5 and CS6, why is CS6 cropping it differently? I notice there are some extra options in C6 tool bar where you define the cropping measurements, (I'm not in front of the computer right now so this may not be accurate), I think there is an option to crop off white edges or something. Maybe there's a feature that is new I'm overlooking?
