Cropping glitch in Photoshop CS3

My cropping tool has ceased working in Photoshop CS3.  When I try and crop an image to any size the canvas instantaneously reduced to 1 px in size.  I have been using the cropping tool for  this software for many years  and now this  glitch has occurred.  Can anyone help me get rid of this glitch so the cropping tool works as it should again?

It might be that you have a small value like 1 px inserted into the width, height or resolution fields.
You can reset just the Crop Tool by right clicking on the Crop icon in the tool options bar and chose Reset Tool

Cropping tool does not function properly in Photoshop CS3. Always crops to .004" x .004". Tried reinstall with no luck. Any fixes out there?

Reset the tool by right-clicking on the crop tool drop-down/fly-out menu in the top options bar (big crop tool icon above the tools panel, when the crop tool is selected). Be sure to check there aren't values in the crop tool by hitting the clear button in the options bar.

  • Photoshop CS3 Taking a Long Time to Open

This is a message for anyone whose Photoshop CS3 is taking a really, really long time (2 or 3 minutes) to load, and gets stuck on reading the Preferences.
YES, I DID try trashing my Preference file, and letting Photoshop rebuild it. But that did not work. It still got hung up on loading Photoshop.
What I found was that, somehow (and I'm still not sure how), I had many, many, many duplicate Tool Presets for all of my tools. They were duplicates of the default Tool Presets. In some cases, there were 50 or 60 duplicate Tool Presets for certain tools (i.e. Crop 8x10).
I used the Preset Manager to DELETE all of the duplicate Tool Presets. I did not just trash all the presets, because I wasn't sure which ones were custom presets that I had set up, and I wasn't sure if I had saved all my custom ones.
After deleting all of the duplicate Tool Presets, Photoshop CS3 now takes SECONDS to open. It's opens very quickly.
Hope this helps someone out there.

  • Photoshop CS3 error saving files - Could not save ... because the fileis already in use or was left

I have a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS3 that only started happening last night. Heres a description of the problem.
When I try and save a Photoshop file, I get the following error message:-
Could not save (filename). because the file is already in use or was left open
I have rebooted my computer, rebooted our server, un-installed & reinstalled Photoshop and also done a system restore, and I still have the problem. (The system restore actually caused huge problems I got the error message The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall or call customer support, except I wasnt able to reinstall or uninstall the product. The computer just would not run the installer. I had to undo the system restore.)
I can do Save For Web with no trouble and I can save files to the same location with every other Adobe product installed in the Web bundle, just not Photoshop.
We have 2 machines here with an identical set up (hardware and software) and the problem is only on one machine.
Even though Photoshop says it cant save the file, its actually saving the file in the following format:-
~psX.tmp where X is a random variable, either characters or numbers.
I have to manually open My Documents and rename the file to filename.psd so I can access it again.
Short of reformatting my computer (which Im not keen on doing because it will mean several wasted work hours and I will have to pay our IT people to come in and hook me back up to our network), how can this problem be fixed?
I have also Googled the problem and the only help I found was a suggestion to search for a psicon.dll file and rename it. This file does not appear anywhere on my system, so I'm at a loss.
I have contacted support about this issue, but thought it was also worth while to ask here at the same time.

I'm having similar problems with not being able to save files after editing them (and giving them a new file-name, obviously) in Photoshop Elements 4.0. I get an error message saying (for instance): "Could not save as (whatever I'm trying to name the file) because the file is already in use or was left open". Then I see a .tmp file (that I can't open)
I did a search and found that the file was being saved twice, once within Photoshop (where I'm working with it) and also in..
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Temporary"
I'm assuming this is the problem, but if you have any clue as to why is this happening and what I can do about it, I'd welcome any input. I've been using PSE-4.0 for years, and this problem just started cropping up. The only (cumbersome) way around this problem has been to just make my edits (in PSE-4.0) and do a "save" under the original file name, then go into explorer and rename the file. So, in short, I cannot do what I've been doing for years, editing a picture and saving it (renamed) in the sane folder (or a different one).
I can "see" the .tmp files in PSE-4.0, but they won't open.. but they will in JASC.. odd..
    Thanks-

  • Installed 10.6.3 and now Photoshop CS3 won't open

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Photoshop CS3 hasn't been the same. Whether it is the OS or the new drivers to manage my printer and my scanner, I don't know.
Today, I had been working on Photoshop all day and at some point the computer got slow and it told me it had a software update. I decided to save everything I was doing, quit Photoshop and install Mac OS 10.6.3 hoping it was the answer to all the glitches.
Instead, Photoshop won't open at all anymore. I have restarted, shut down, repaired permissions, reinstalled the program, updated everything and it still won't open. It's the only program affected from my design suite as far as I can tell, but it's also the one I use the most!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also happened here with all of my CS3 apps on my Mac Pro. Also, Quark XPress v8.16 exhibited the same crash at startup. *_Not Good_*! Lightroom loaded properly with no issues. Haven't had a chance to run through every app yet, but as a Graphic Designer, those are the ones I need to work. An interesting tidbit was that this did NOT occur on the installs of CS3 and Quark XPress on my MacBook, which also was updated to 10.6.3. Just the Mac Pro.
Re-installed CS3 suite and Quark XPress to no avail. Also cleaned font caches.
I "fixed" this by re-installing Snow Leopard from the DVD which brought me back to 10.6, which just installs over itself, keeping all your apps and settings intact. I then downloaded the older 10.6.2 Combo Update, and installed that, which brought me back to the point I was at prior to 10.6.3. I also ran a software update after the 10.6.2 update, and installed all the found updates EXCEPT for the 10.6.3 update it found.
    No problems as of yet...
I'll report back if any do arise.
My gut feeling is that this is some sort of color profile or font issue.

  • Photoshop CS3 - Opens photos very slow

Alright so I have an interesting one I am hoping someone can help me with... I have Adobe Photoshop CS3 (I know, a little behind).  I have been using CS3 since it came out and love it - however recently, and unfortunately I don't have any real time-frames off the top of my head, it is incredibly slow to open photos.
Typically I drag/drop a photo from my folders into Adobo to begin my editing based on the pictures I see fit to edit.  The pictures come from a Canon T2i - I dump them to my local HDD, and then move the photos I wish to edit into Photoshop.  The average file size is about 7mb, so they're not huge.  Now when I open the pictures, it takes, on average, about a minute and a half per picture to open.  During this time Adobe is non-responsive as in menus, navigation, etc... - I can minimize and maximize, it doesn't freeze or anything.  Just sits there while it attempts to open these photos (using no more than 3% processor time).  It does eventually open them, no errors.
This problem happens whether I drag drop into photoshop, open from the file menu, whether they're RAW images, JPEG, GIF, PNG, PSD, 10mb in size or 10kb in size, etc...
I know it's not the system, everything else runs great.
The system is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system, 8GB of Ram, dual core process (1.86ghz each), dual nVidia GeForce GTX 275 (512mb each) video cards that are running with nVidia's latest drivers.
The system is installed on a Western Digital 10,000RPM HDD and I have 6TB of hard-drives (all internal SATA) where my files are stored.  I'd fine it hard to believe if it's the system.
I can play graphic intensive games without glitches, run Microsoft ICE for image sewing (without hesitation), and edit/dump HD videos without problems into Sony Vegas Video.
I have attempted to reset of Adobe Photoshop by doing the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT while loading and allowing complete reset.  I turned of all Windows 7 effects (even though this issue never happened before when I had Windows 7 since launch).  I set the Photoshop.exe to the highest priority in task manager, alloted 88% RAM to it through Adobe preferences, and ensured that both processors are given full attention it.  Still nothing.
Has anyone experience this before?  Outside of un-installing and re-installing (which is next) - I can't think of anything else...

Just to be clear, did you get a prompt from Photoshop confirming preferences deletion?  I ask because sometimes folks think they've done a reset without having seen that dialog, and that's not the case.  You have to be VERY quick to get Photoshop to notice you've pressed these keys during startup.  If it doesn't prompt you, you weren't quick enough.
Some other things to think about:
Is your default printer offline?  Is there any printer installed in your system that's offline?
Do you have the Twain driver installed but a scanner is turned off or missing?
Are there any network drives established but the network resource is offline or unreachable?
What 3rd party plug-ins do you have installed into Photoshop?  Is it possible one of them is not initializing properly?

  • Importing into iPhoto, edited RAW photos from Photoshop CS3

I edit all my photos in Photoshop CS3. Sometimes I just batch edit many of them. But when I import these edited images, iPhoto only shows them in unedited form. How do I import these edited images into iPhoto, and yet maintain the edits.
I am a professional photographer, and the only reason I need to import these images into iPhoto, is that I use the web galleries as the viewing tool for my clients.
    Thanks.

    coxpix:
When iPhoto imports a RAW file it creates a jpg version of it for display and editing with by iPhoto. Therefore, when you edit a RAW with CS3 you must import the new edited version, of whatever format you chose to save as, and use that one. It's the nature of the beast. All edits to RAW files when saved must be saved as a new file.
For what it's worth, the following may be of some help in using CS3 with iPhoto:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Picture Size in Photoshop CS3 Extended

I have a bunch of digital pictures I am putting in a video script. My video is 16:9 so all my pictures have black at the sides. Does anyone know what size to make these pictures in Photoshop CS3 extended? Do I change the pixel size and if so to what?
    Thanks
    Lynn

I don't want to crop them, I want to resize the images. I don't know what size to make them so they will be full screen on 16:9 television. Right now they are the size for 4:3 so have a black border on each side of the picture. In other programs I can resize them by pixils at 1280 X 720 pixils but in Photoshop the pixil size seems to be in the thousands. So would I resize at say 24000 X 24000??

  • How can i make a photo that is 10 x 6.6 to 10 x 8 without changing the image in Photoshop CS3?

    How can I make a photo that is 10 x 6.6 to 10 x 8 without changing the image in Photoshop CS3?

I could be snarky and say change the image in a different version of Photoshop, but NO...
The only way to make a photo that is one size into another size is to change the image.  You have a few choices about how to change it:
One way is to simply expand the height from 6.6 to 8 inches using Image>Canvas Size, using the default setting of having the image centered and leaving the background either black or white, your preference.  This will add background color to the top and bottom of your image.  This won't change the image itself, but it will change its surroundings.
Another way is to resize the image using Image>Image Size, entering the new dimensions after turning off the aspect ratio lock (resample on).  This will stretch the image vertically, however, so it's probably not a good option.
Finally, you could resize the image using Image>Image Size, leaving the aspect ratio lock on and resample on, and increase the height from 6.6 to 8.  This will have the secondary effect of enlarging the width from 10" to a greater width.  Then you crop the resulting image back down to 10" width, which involves losing some edge areas of the image.

  • Photoshop CS3 suddenly freezing when Saving

Can someone help me? I've been running photoshop cs3 successfully up until yesterday when after working on layers and cropping etc, i go to SAVE and suddenly it freezes up. I've got 4 RAM, plenty of space on my harddrive. (i use external drives) I did a few small steps yesterday under preferences, and even uninstalled an reinstalled. Still doing same thing. Any advice? thank you.

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
(A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.)

  • IPhoto & Photoshop CS3 extended

Hello everyone, I have a question related to Photoshop, I figured this would be a good place to find an answer. In photoshop CS3 extended, using the magnetic lasso to extract part of an image, after I extract the image, how do I put it somewhere else? I cannot find an answer to this anywhere on the web, so I thought I would try here, if anyone has the answer please help, I am really trying to figure this out before I drop the cash to buy it, I am on the free trial right now and the magnetic lasso feature is the only reason I want it. Thanks

After you select the area you want with the magic lasso, do a Command-X (cut) and then Command-V (paste). Change to the arrow cursor mode and click and drag the area you selected to wherever you want it. A new layer will be created with the cut and pasted area in it.
If you're considering PS CS3 just for the lasso feature you might consider Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. It has the same lasso feature and about 80 % of CS3's features at 1/7 the price. I wouldn't get CS3 for just that.

  • Photoshop CS3 can't do lowercase type-only large and small caps

    Photoshop CS3, G5 PowerMac Dual 2GHz w/ 7GB RAM
A weird Photoshop problem: using the type tool, I can only produce type in large-and-small-caps, as opposed to upper and lower case. I can't generate any lowercase text. I've tried all the usual diagnostic tools: trashing the prefs seemed to work at first, but it's destructive of other stuff I don't want to lose, and anyway the problem came back after a while. I tried the Phantom User, and learned that the problem is tied to my User Identity, i.e., the problem doesn't exist in other User identities, but how do I make use of that information? I considered migrating to a new user identity, but I would have to go through every single appliciation, blah blah blah. So: does anybody have a quick, elegant solution to this, or is this a problem that has suddenly cropped up elsewhere? I'm not crippled by it, thanks to Illustrator CS3, but it's a convenience that I miss. And how do I trash the PS prefs without losing my brush tool presets?

Did you clear font caches (with Cocktail)?<br />> tried the Phantom User,<br /><br />I see a black mask, cape and scary organ music here. <g> If logging in as a new user clears the problem, you may have a corrupted user identity and should stop using it.<br /><br />Neil

  • IPhoto cannot import certain JPEGs created from Photoshop CS3

recently I found out, that if I save a JPEG from a zip compressed TIFF file via Photoshop CS3 it will not import into iPhoto '08.
Only if I save the JPEG from an uncompressed TIFF file it will import.
I think iPhoto is much to picky ...

You did get it imported OK though, didn't you? You can report that to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Tools unavailable in Photoshop CS3

In Photoshop CS3 (as part of Design Suite), sometimes (no obvious change causing it) all the tools become unavailable, both in Photoshop and in Bridge. When I click an icon or use a keyboard shortcut, the options appear (e.g., the brush options for the brush tool, or crop options for crop), but the cursor in the image editing area remains a hand and does not function. Other functions, such as filters, work fine.
There is a FAQ about a similar problem in CS2, relating to a tablet, but I don't have a tablet, only mice.
The problem goes away with a restart of the system (Win XP SP2), though not with a use logoff/logon.
    Any ideas?
