Cropping in a circle

Sorry, this is a very basic question but i can't seem to figure it out.
I am trying to  make a circle logo and some of my vectors are half in and half out of my circle shape, what i want is for anything outside the shape to be cropped/not visible in the finished project.
Any help greatly appreciated as i am losing my patience and my mind at the moment
TIA
Nick
P.S I'm using illustrator CS6

NJP,
what i want is for anything outside the shape to be cropped/not visible in the finished project.
It is always neater to have the final artwork be what you see, with no hidden outlying parts.
But as you may know, in some cases Pathfinder operations (may) wreck the artwork.
If you have one/some of those cases, you may consider using another solution where you hide part of the artwork, such as a Clipping Mask or an Opacity Mask
If you must, you may crop a Clipping Mask to its Bounding Box as a destructive deed.
For Pathfinder destructive deeds, you may search for Ofelas rather than Pathfinder.

How do i crop a perfect circle?

Try the elliptical marquee tool. It is usually the second tool from the top. You may need to right-click on the rectangle marquee as the tools are nested together. Hold down shift and drag over your image to get a perfect circle. Press Ctrl+J to create a new layer and turn off the background layer by clicking the eye symbol.

  • How do I crop in a circle?

I just downloaded the trial version of Elements 9. I have had no formal training on the program at all. I want to crop some photos into a circle, but I can't figure out how! Can you help?

There are many ways to crop. Here is one which offers lots of flexibility. No doubt other readers of this forum will offer other suggestions.
Your picture when loaded into PSE has the default layer named "Background". First thing is to convert it to regular layer by renaming it; double-click it and enter the new name or simply accept the default name "Layer 0".
Next, active the Elipse tool.  Holding down Shift, draw out a circle approximately the size you want (Shift forces the ellipse to be a circle). This creates a new layer named "Shape 1". Don't worry that the circle is a solid color and not in the exact size and position you want; we will fix this is a moment.
Move the shape layer below the picture layer and group the 2 layers. The picture will now be cropped into the circle, with a checkerboard background indicating transparency:
The nice thing about this method is that you can now resize and reposition the picture precisely where you want it within the crcle.  Select the Move Tool and with either layer activated use the mouse and/or arrow keys to reposition the picture. To resize the circle, with the Move tool selected activate the picture layer and while holding Shift drag any of the corner handles to resize (Shift preserves the circle). If you want to reposition the circle-picture combination within the picture's canvas, link the 2 layers and use the Move tool with mouse or arrow keys.
If the picture is to be used for an application that requires transparency (such as MS Word document, Web page, greeting card program), save it in a file type that supports transparency. PSD, TIFF, PNG, GIF, EPS support transparency.  JPG, BMP do not. If you save it as jpg for example, you will not have transparency but instead a white background (which is maybe what you wanted in the first place). If you want a different color background add a blank layer at the bottom of the stack and fill it with your color:
Like I said, there are other (and easier) ways to crop but this offers the flexibility of resizing and positioning.

  • Cropping to a circle

I have a square bitmap that I want to crop into a circle and
save. Im not too great with Fireworks and if someone could help me
    out, that would be great.
    Thanks.

There is no such thing as a circular image on the web. There
    are
rectangular ones that look like a circle, though. The way to
    do that would
be to superimpose a white circle on the image so that the
    desired content of
the image is within the white region, and then to apply that
    circle to the
image as a mask, by selecting both and using MODIFY | Group
    as Mask.

  • Trying to Create Cone from Image

I am attempting to take a circular image (a logo of something) and edit it so that it can be printed and turned into a small cone.  I have spent HOURS researching this and cannot seem to find the the problem.  I've followed the steps below (found on a tutorial at another website) and the gap (where the circle gets slid under itself to create the cone shape) is so small.  I have messed around with it since this morning and am at my wit's end.  Thank you, in advance, for any assistance!
Let's consider my avatar as the original image. I make sure it is cropped into a circle.
Then in photoshop, I do Filter->Distort->Polar coordinates->Polar to rectangular:
Then, I resize the contents (but not the container [e.g. select all, edit->transform->scale]) of the image horizontally. The percentage I reduce is the percentage of degrees I will remove:
Finally, I go back to polar coordinates, and retrim as a circle:  (OP: I don't know what they mean by "retrim as a circle," though, so I stop after selecting "rectangular to polar")
Wrapping the image around the removed wedge is an exercise left to the reader.

Thank you for your reply, Nancy!  I actually want to print this and then "assemble" it into a cone.
Here is the original tutorial.  The original person was able to accomplish exactly what I want...I just can't figure out where I'm going wrong!

  • How do I crop an image with a Clipping Mask using a circle instead of a rectangle?

I watched Adobe TV Illustrator's tutorial about cropping images with a clipping mask. In the video, the presenter uses the rectangle tool with the clipping mask, and makes a reference that the circle or vector shape could be used, but I cannot figure out how to get the circle.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-illustrator-cs6/cropping-images-with-clipping-masks/
I'm new to Illustrator and need step by step instructions!
    Thanks!

    Christine,
As Larry said, and as I said in the first post:
For a Clipping Mask, you just create a path, in this case a circle, and place it on top of the image, then select both and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
You can see the shortcut when you use the dropdown; it is Ctrl+7 for Windows.
At least in the old days, you could also use Alt/Option+O+M+M (easy to remember, Object>Mask>Make).
It is easy to skip/overlook the exact steps.

  • In PSE11, how do I "crop" a photo into a circle?

I would greatly appreciate step-by-step instruction on how to "crop" a photo into a circle in PSE11.
I've created an invitation for my daughters 1st birthday and I want to add a circular photo of her on the invite, but I can't seem to figure it out.
I understand that I can't technically "crop" it but I need the image to appear to be circular by using the transparency feature.
    Again, I need a step-by-step as I'm still new to PSE11...
    Thank you!

I'm curious as to why reply#1 didn't work. That is basic PSE stuff. Was the selection still active with marching ants as asked in reply#3? Perhaps somehow the selection was deleted before doing the inverse.
If you do get that to work, note that you first must convert the picture to a "regular" layer by renaming it from "Background" to anything else. Then the deleted portion will be replaced by transparency. If you do the delete on the Background layer the deleted portion is simply replaced by the color defined in the background color chip on the toolbar.

Use the elliptical marquee tool, hold down shift to constrain a circle, then when you've got everything the way you want, Image>crop.

  • Cropping a photo as a circle with blurred edges

Help!! I should know how to do this - in fact there used to a
tutorial with it in I'm sure!! Can't find it though.
I am trying to take a photo, crop it so that it is circular
and blur the edges so I can insert in into a web page later using
Dreamweaver. At the moment the target page is white, but I would
like to be able to do this blurring into any baclground colour.
I'm sure I have done it before (Maybe in Fireworks 4 - I am
now using Fireworks MX) but I can't remember how - I can crop the
picture by drawing a circle and using "paste inside" but I can't
get the circle to detach from the "hidden" full picture and can't
remember how to blur the edges.
    Help!!!

Draw an ellipse on top of the photo and fill it with white.
    Change the
edge property of the ellipse from Antialiased to Feather.
    Select both
the image and the ellipse and choose Modify > Mask >
    Group as Mask. You
will be able to adjust the fade off at the edge by adjusting
    the feather
    amount.
The only way to export the image to fade into any background
    is to
export it in 32-bit PNG format. Unfortunately, it will not
    display
properly in Internet Explorer without first applying some
    proprietary
markup called the Alpha Image Loader Filter. You can learn
    more about
    that here:
    http://www.playingwithfire.com/test/pngbehavior/demo.html
Another option is to export it in SWF format and apply wmode
    transparency.

  • Is it possible to crop a circle or oval in Aperture?

    Hi,
I would like to crop my photo's as circles or ovals without having to buy Photoshop. Is it possible in Aperture? I schoot and edit in raw.
    thank you
    lilian

I am only wondering how it will effect the quality of my picture.
That will depend on the quality you use to export from Aperture to Preview, and also on the quality you use to save from Preview. Export at the best quality you need for the purpose you want the photo for.
The basic idea is to use the "elliptical selection" from the "Edit Toolbar", then drag the mouse across the rectangular area that contains your ellipse/circle and then copy the selected area to the clipboard. Now create a new image (File > New from Clipboard) and this will create a new photo with transparent background. Then save this image in a format that supports transparency - tiff or png.

  • How to create a simple circle crop in FCP7?

I have two separate videos and basically I want one of them in the background and then the other on top of it with a circular crop. Anybody know a way to do this?

    Put your background on V1.
Go to the Browser and click the Effects tab.
Go to Video Generators > Shapes > Circle. Place this on V2.
Put the video you want to crop on V3.
Right click on V3 and choose Compostite Mode > Travel Matte Luma.
A double click on V2 will send it to the Viewer, where you can adjust the size whilst observing the adjustment in the Canvas.

Quick one here, after cropping a circle in a video (changed the clip to composite mode>Travel Matte Luma after generating a cirlcle), the edge of the circle has a gradual fade, whereas i wanted a sharp edge.
Could anyone help me out with editing the circles properties?
    Thanks a lot.

Double click the clip with the circle generator on it, to send it to the Browser.
Click the Controls tab. Set the Softness value to zero.

  • Circle cropping

I have a square with a circle emblem inside the square.  I just want to see the emblem without the four corners of the square.  I have tried every tool (probable incorrectly) to get gid of thsquare with no results.  How do I get rid of the four corners of the square?

Get the cookie cutter tool out of the tool box. On the tool's option bar, click where it says "shape", then open the Crop shapes library. Among the various crop shapes, there is a circular one - all black.
Select it, hold down the shift key, and drag out the circular crop border, and commit.
You should now have the circular emblem surrounded by transparency.
