Cropping in iphoto

I like the easy editing in iphoto (enhance/red eye/retouch etc) but I have not yet figured out how to retain the "cropping" feature. As with the others once I have dabbled and am satisfied with the effect i have selected I hit 'DONE" and wait for it to be saved. Unfortunately it does not save the "crop" which I have ever so carefully selected !!! Is there a secret knack to it !!!!
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

loons :
Or once you've selected the crop are you can click on the Crop button at the bottom and then on the Done button.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Cropping in iPhoto reverses Photoshop's edit - help

I was helping my father edit his pictures by dragging them from the iPhoto album they were in to Photoshop CS5.
After editing I'd click "Save" and the highest setting "12" for the jpeg. When I'd go back to iPhoto the editing doesnt appear in the thumbnails but it does when I open the images.
The problem is, he has gone through and cropped some and all the editing I did on them is gone.
What is the issue? How do I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Custom cropping in iPhoto 08

with iphoto 06, I could select custom and designate a crop of 5.5 x 4.0 inches, which perfectly fits my photo cards that I make. with 08, it doesn't seem to accept fractions.
Any work around with this issue?
Also, is there a way to save a custom crop and have it show up in the menu?
    Thanks,

    True -- BUT
Any work around with this issue?
    Yes - since the crop is really just a ratio you can enter 55 x 40 and achieve your results (or 550 x 400 -- or 55000 x 40000)
Also, is there a way to save a custom crop and have it show up in the menu?
I do not believe there is

  • Cropping in iPhoto photo services book

    Hi,
I am a newbie trying to create a book with iPhoto and a couple of my images are getting cropped when I place them on a page. I have tried using iPhoto, photoshop to crop to a size, as well as leaving it as is, and every way I try when I place it the sides are cropped and I don't want this to happen. How can I stop this or edit it to a size that will fit?
    Thanks

Nope - the higher the dpi of the photo (the pixel dimensions divided by the final print size in inches) will give you a clue
Apple says that the print quality warning comes on at prints below 180 dpi -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1035 -- the more below that your photo is the lower quality - for most people resolutions down to around 110 dpi are acceptable but that is totally personal - the lower the dpi the low were the quality and the more likely you are to seeing the pixels in the print

  • Aperture's Straighten and Crop vs. iPhoto's

Hello, I know that when using iPhoto to straighten a pic that it ZOOMS then crops the pic to eliminate the black triangles that would be left behind from the rotation. This zooming is unacceptable for me, as it degrades the pictures (12MP digi cam) just enough for me to see it. I imagine that this is a function of trying to rotate, and crop out the black while keeping the pic the same size (which would require the zoom). I have seen that Aperture straightens and 'crops' but when it auto crops, does it ALSO try to keep the image the same size (which would lead to another zoom situation)? I would just like to find a tool that can straighten, and if need be, cut my image size from 4000x3000 to 3500x2500, versus keeping the 4000x3000 and being slightly blurred. If the camera were garbage and the images were slightly blurred to begin with, then maybe it wouldn't be so noticeable, but my Canon takes really sharp pics and any blur really sticks out. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, iPhoto does the same thing, as far as the pixel count being reduced. I suppose that's just from cropping out the black triangles. However, I just realized that I am an idiot... I exported an original file, then exported a straightened file, and the two resulting files aren't very different... The altered file isn't noticeably any more blurry than the original, it must have been just how it looked in iPhoto's preview window. That's odd... I was getting a little concerned that all of my straightened photos were going to look like garbage when I export them. All seems well... Thanks!

  • Resolution drops to 72 when I crop in iPhoto

If I crop a photo in iPhoto, and then export it to my desktop and open it in Photoshop, I find that the dpi has been reduced to 72. Regardless of whether it started as 300 or 500 dpi. Something is happening in the cropping process that is reducing the dpi -- I can't find any way to adjust this. Help!

I'm having a problem with photo resolution. IPhoto seems to import from the camera without a choice of resolution.
That is correct - your camera sets the resolution and iPhoto makes a bit for bit copy of the photo when you import
I want 300 dpi so that i can then export the photo to print as a full page image in a Pages document.
Read the earlier posts in this thread - DPI is meaningless - number of pixels is what is significant
I'm losing a ton of detail.
How are you "losing a ton of detail?"
I also need to email photos at high res, and haven't found a way to do this from IPhoto images. I would have thought that was a pretty basic requirement for a photo program.
It is - if you are using a supported e-mail client simply select the photo, click the mail icon and select actual size and when the mail compose window comes up (for Apple Mail) be sure the sie is also actual (in the lower right hand corner of the mail compose window)
I was able to print out my photos super crisp with MS Word. Pages & Iphoto have me very frustrated.
Since you do not tell how you are getting the photos into these programs let me describe the correct way - in the open (or attach) window look in the lower left hand corner under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto and find the photo and use it
You may also find it worthwhile to watch the iPpoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/
Any advice, short of spending a small fortune on Photoshop? thanks.
Yes - learn to use iPhoto correctly - it works just fine and there is no degradation of photo quality

  • HT2639 Can you resize after cropping in IPhoto affecting only the area that was resized?

Hello, I have resized an area of a photograph that has people in it.  I want to enlarge the photo to get a better image of the people and their faces. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Sally

As I am interested in preserving/enhancing the quality of the enlargement, does this require an additional app?
You cannot add information to an image, that is not there in the beginning, even with a more expensive application.
Try, to get as much as possible sharpness and definition into the cropped out section as possible, using iPhoto's adjustments in "Edit" mode. The most promising are the "Definition" slider (that will add clarity and definition, without adding too much contrast) and the "Sharpness" slider. Be careful with the "Contrast" slider. If the face was in the shadows, you could try the "Highlights" and "shadows" controls as well.

  • Cropping crashes iPhoto almost every time

Can't seem to crop photos since the upgrade. Almost every time I crop, it just bombs out of the program without saving the change.

  • Some of my photos have a disconnected link after being cropped on iPhoto

I am an editor of a art/lit magazine. We take pictures of the art work, upload them to iPhoto, crop/edit them, and then move them into Indesign. Most of the pictures work when we do that, but for five of them, it doesn't. We upload those, crop them, and then when we go back to the picture, it just turns black when we try to do anything with it. We've tried to retake the pictures, but each time the same thing keeps happening after we edit it. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this, or if we are doing something wrong. It only does it for certain pictures of the same artwork, so we have no idea what is wrong.
    *PLEASE HELP:)*

    Reply to Terence Devlin:
There really is not anything different with the pictures. We will take a picture of the same piece of art mulitple times, and all the pictures of the same piece of art work don't work.
It only messes up after we crop it.
We tried the backup and rebuild, but it didn't work.
    Thank you though!

  • Blurriness after cropping in iPhoto '09

For some reason, when cropping a photo in '09, my photos are coming out blurry after the fact.
This was never the case with '06 and '08. Any thoughts, ideas?

Done. Thanks for the suggestion and the link.
For those stumbling onto this thread: the problem is in what might be called the "base" thumbnail. It shows in all views and in the initial Edit view. If you click and drag the magnify slider in Edit view, the initial view of the photo is blurred. When you release in any position but the far left, the blurriness clears, but it returns as soon as you click on the slider again.
I posted it to Apple as a bug. If you have the same problem, please follow Old Toad's link above and report it.

  • IPhoto 11 -- Destructive crops

    --- Destructive Cropping ---
    Using iPhoto 11 9.2.3 / Mac OS 10.6.8
Since the release of iPhoto 8 Apple has heavily marketed iPhoto's capacity for non-destructive editing. I find this is true at least with respect to setting white and black points, exposure, cropping, etc ... but recently I find that some iPhoto crops are non-editable (i.e. destructive—which  for once is an apt term!) I know that iPhoto is cropping the original because I've opened the original JPGs in my iPhoto library and they are NOT the dimensions of the original photos. If it weren't for back up copies, I'd be steamed
iPhoto does not destructively crop the majority of the time. Initially I experimented carefully on a dozen scratch photos to be sure. I've been able to crop and recrop any photo numerous times. But indeed, something does trigger an occasional destructive crop—and I have no idea what.
The first indication of a destructive crop is that the Revert to Original button is disabled. And in edit mode I no longer see the original photo surrounded by crops marks. That's how I first discovered the issue. I thought, "Where are my crop guides. After a destructive crop, logically, they are no longer visible.
But what incurs a destructive crop?? If cropping can be accomplished "destructively" and "non-destructively" I'd like to be clear about what causes the former. Anybody know. Anybody experienced this?
    -- Conclusion --
Seems like an interface flaw that iPhoto usually behaves "non-destructively", but some step  silently causes iPhoto to crop "destructively" and surreptitiously, and that iPhoto provides the user with no warning that it is about to be permanently alter the photo!
This is my first second serious attempt with iPhoto. The first time was years ago and I didn't like it then. I'm not a mac lightweight, or app lightweight. Actually I'm a app developer and designer. And I think something is wrong with the function or interface ... or the non-destructive marketing and documentation. I haven't been able to find any discussions that cites destructive cropping in iPhoto.

You have a great way of making normal things sound strange and suspicious
You can't search the Library package with Spotlight.
When you edit either with or via iPhoto a new file is created. This is a Preview and stored in the Previews folder. It's there so that apps that link to iPhoto via media browsers etc have something to get from the app. Aperture does the same, just you can choose to generate previews or not.
This has been the case since iPhoto 1. The names have changed (Originals to Masters, Modified to Previews) over the versions but iPhoto has always generated a version of the shot incorporating the edits. That’s just how it works.
Here's how the non-destrucive part works: If you edit a shot with iPhoto then choices you make are stored in the iPhoto database and the Preview is created.
If you subsequently edit with iPhoto, then the sum of the edits are re-applied to the Master file and the old preview is deleted and a new one created, reflecting the new changes.
If you export the shot (File -> Export) a new file is created incorporating the changes (unless you export the Original, of course).
It's still non-destructive because you can revert to the original.
However, the fact that you cannot revert to the original on some of your files suggests to me that the database in your Library is corrupted.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Cropping Still Very bad in iPhoto 08

I am spending much, mcuh more time cropping my 200-300 photos per event that was a breeze to crop in iPhoto '06.
Hoping the Apple Gods will read these posts so iPhoto can go back to being the very, very best.
I want my iPhoto '06 cropping back. Please!

DO you have a question? if you do the users here probably can answer it
If you want to complain to Apple - use the iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback - Apple can change things - we users can ONLY assist you in using what Apple provides - and for now the iPhoto crop tool is what Apple provides
    LN
PS IMHO your work flow seems far more difficult than simply moving the constraint menu for the few photos where it makes any difference at all. - You really are exporting each photo to be cropped, starting preview, cropping, saving reimporting, deleting the original photo in iPhoto and emptying the iPhoto trash to save a simple move of the constraint bar once in a while? We have a different view of simplifying the workflow

  • Using external editor PSE to crop photos for iPhoto

For years I have used PSE (Photoshop Elements) as the external editor in iPhoto (iPhoto 8 - 7.1.5).  Recently I upgraded to a new machine which has iPhoto 11 (9.4.2) installed.  I decided (amongst other things) to crop a photo in PSE using the "No Restriction" option.  When this photo was re-opened in iPhoto, iPhoto rendered it as a "stretched" photo - like it was trying to force it to the original photo ratio.  Obviously all the dimensions looked weird in this "stretched" photo! As an experiment I reverted the cropped photo to "Original" and then performed the exact same crop within iPhoto itself.  No problem. The photo was rendered exactly as you'd expect.  So why does the new iPhoto not seem to handle externally cropped photos properly?  Is there a solution? (other than forking out another 50 quid for the latest version of PSE - which may or may not have the same issue!)
Yes I'm using an old version pf PSE (6 in fact) but everything else (at least everything else that I've tried!) seems to work OK.
    Thoughts anyone?

I may be preaching to the choir here but there may be some PSE tips here that might help, particularly regarding PSE's preferences:

  • IPhoto cropping exports

I'm having a rather annoying issue with iPhoto, where certain photos are cropping to a very strange dimension when I export them. It doesn't affect all images, just some. They're not cropped in iPhoto, so I'm confused as to how this could happen. If I drag the individual photo out to my desktop, it exports fine, but the moment I select a bunch of photos at the same time it happens again. As such, it makes it highly annoying... I need to burn these photos off for a family member.
It happens in iPhoto on both my computer and my girlfriend's, as well as in Aperture.
    For example, here's an original:
What iPhoto (and Aperture) produces with an export:
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What version of iPhoto? And the OS?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result
