Cropping in Photoshop Elements 12

I would like to be able to create and save for future use my preferred cropping sizes.
PE12 provides several standard cropping sizes eg. 3x5, 16x9, 8x10 etc. and the option of a custom size.
I would like to save a custom size for future use eg. 16x10 or add my custom size to the drop down list of standard cropping sizes.
I have checked the installation options and preferences and not been able to find a way to do this.
I am tech-savvy and would be prepared to add my custom cropping sizes to an installion file if that is a way of achieving a solution.
Regards.....Peter

Hi,
Try switching to Media view and then go to Find -> By Details.
Set the field to People and select the persons name.
You add further people by clicking on the + sign
The two options above the search criteria allow you to select all photos containing at least one or only ones with all of your selections.
The search can be saved in case you want to repeat it a later time.
Hope that helps
Brian

  • New Problem with cropping in Photoshop Elements 8.0

I use adobe photoshop elements 8 for years already and it has worked perfectly up until now. When I crop a picture instead of it cropping when I click on the check mark (as in the past) it reduces it to a small window with just gray in it....no reduced picture at all. Did a setting get thrown off or something? Help is appreciated!

At the far left end of the options bar is a tiny triangle. Click it and choose Reset Tool from the popout menu.

  • Does Photoshop Elements work with Windows 8 Touchscreen

Hi I'm able t use parts of the touchscreen for example, selecting a tool. But, when I try to say use the crop tool I cannot use my finger to expand or contract the crop tool.

Photoshop Elements only specifically works with touchscreens when it comes to gestures (moving your finger(s) in a specific motion to get a special behavior). Otherwise, the touch screen should act exactly like a mouse. My guess here is that this is simply a question of precision. If you try to "click" and drag a corner of the crop interface, does the crop rectangle move or rotate instead of change size?

  • PhotoShop Elements 9 Crop Tool is a total failure!

I do a fair amount of work that involves a lot of croping, mainly for animation sequencing. The Crop tool Custom Height and Width settings do NOT WORK.
I usually have a test image of the exact size that I work in. Example: 500 x100 pixels. This converts to 13.23cm x 2.65 cm at 96dpi. When I type these Crop Size requirements into the Crop tool settings box, I get a crop size way outside the size of the image that I want to crop. There is no way to set that size up yourself by using a test image as a template. In fact there is no way to set up custom sizes in the menu at all! I find this to be very upsetting as I have only just purchased this product. This limitation is something that I would expext to find in freeware, but not in a program like PhotoShop Elements 9. I have tried every conceivable way to try to get the Crop Tool to work to a Pre Set size with no success.
Why is it that a graphics program will not allow you to put in a pixel x pixel measurement? That is pure stupidity on the part of the programmers and very poor work on the part of the testing team. No wonder the program itself crashes from time to time. It just stops running - ppffft! I have a state of the art 64 bit system running Win 7 with plenty of RAM and a High end Graphics Card, so I know that my system is not at fault - it's PhotoShop 9. I cannot believe the primative workspace and the lack of the ability to custom predefine tools. All in all I'm extremely unhappy with PE9.
If anyone has had this or similar issues and has found a solution please tell me what it is.

In answer to your remark I will go through the whole process again at a later date and re-post. It does not make any difference to the resultant Crop size whether you input cm or pixels. Here's a point for you though since you mentioned it. Check out the Ruler - does it look like the Crop is anywhere near 500cm x 100cm? Maybe you were so busy trying to find fault that you failed to see the forest for the trees?
I only find fault where it exists - not where it doesn't. As far as Forums go, I am a member of a few Forums and have not had this sort of problem with answers before where the reply posts tend toward trying to pretend a problem doesn't exist or trying to prove fault with the poster. Hmmm.  Again I wonder how many of these reply's are from people with some affiliation with Adobe?
I will finish by saying that just for you I will go through the whole pointless exercise again and make sure that the Pixels are indeed input.
    1. Opening File
    2. File Open.
    3. Resetting Crop Tool.
    4. Crop Tool reset and Measurement Boxes clear.
5.First Measurement Input. PLEASE NOTE 500 Pixels Input!
    6. Second Measurement Input. PLEASE NOTE 100 Pixels Input!
    7. Third Criteria Input. PLEASE NOTE 96dpi Input!
    8. All Input Data correct and ready to Crop to preset Width/Height/Dpi restrictions.
    9. OH DEAR IT DOESN'T WORK! Again it fails to give me a simple 500x100 pixel at 96dpi Crop Box!
After this reply post you may just get some idea of the frustration I am experiencing. As you can plainly see the Crop Box drawn goes to the very edges of the Image to be Cropped. Can you see the problem now? Maybe I should just go with my friend's suggestions and take a video of the process and post it on YouTube? Then go to my local Consumer Affairs Department! If you can find what I am supposedly doing wrong - please elucidate as I have followed both the prescribed steps in the somewhat Shoddy Online Help and also the suggested remedies posted on the Forum. All to no avail. It just Won't Work!

Apparently it's related to the Firefox plug in.
This isn't exactly a solution but more of a way to avoid opening PDFs with Firefox's plug in.
    1. Highlight "Tools" from the Menu Bar in the top left of the screen (or click "Options" if using the Firefox Compact Menu)
    2. Select to "Options
    3. Select "Applications"
    4. Look for "Adobe Acrobat Document" under Content Type and to the right under Action select "Use Adobe Reader (default)" instead of the using Adobe Acrobat in Firefox
    5. Open a test PDF. It should open in it's own window now.
Again, not a complete solution but something that'll at least let you scroll with PDFs open.

  • Crop image in Photoshop Elements 9

how do i crop a photo to these dimensions 1500 X 1500 -could someone please help?
It's Version Photoshop Elements 9 - (I don't know if they are asking me to crop 1500 mm or Pixels) could you help with both ?

Dear sir or madam, when i went to (Image) on the tool bar and clicked "resize" then under the values blocks to be filled in, i typed the 1500 dimensions for both Height and Width in Pixels
    - The Width automaitcailly changed it to 1640 ? whle the Height remaind the same and it shows at the top, overall Pixel dimensions 7.04M (i assume this is overall) ?
    - The other way is to go direclty to the Edit / Create / Share columes off to the right hand side and under that is "QUICK" - there i am able to crop ...but when i type in 1500 on the upper value blocks it does not accept it ?
These are the only two wasy this version is allowing me to do anything... and i still don't know if any of it is right ?
The photos i have (that need to be exaclty 1500 x 1500 or 1200 x 1200 or 1700 x 1700) are at these dimensions currently:
    1) Pixel Dimensions 11.8 M  with a Width of 2125 Pixels
    and Height of 1944 Pixels
    2) Pixel Dimensions 13.5M with a Width of 2358 Pixels
and a Height of 1996 Pixels
OR if i chage each of them to Percents i can type in 1500 for Width but, it changes to closest value of 1272.26 Percent is what it reverts too
Sorry, coudl you help further ?

I'm using photoshop elements 2.0 and window vista.  when i want to crop i cannot enter any values in the width and height boxes.  the cursor won't enter.  same thing with resolution.  what did i do?  what's wrong?

The first thing you might try is resetting the Crop Tool by right clicking on the crop icon in the tool options bar and choosing Reset Tool.
If that doesn't work then the next thing is to reset the photoshop elements 2 settings file by holding down
the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys just after clicking or double clicking on the pse 2 shortcut.
Keep holding the keys until a dialog appears ask if you want to delete the photoshop elements settings file
and click yes in the dialog.

How can I resize an image without losing resolution or using the crop tool? I am using Photoshop Elements 13 on a PC.

    Hi Peru Bob,
I've tried two images, the results were:
    Image 1
    Jpg, original file size 923KB, dimensions 848px x 279px.
After resizing to 848px x 180px with 72dpi, the file size decreased to 164KB.
    Image 2
    Jpg, original file size 809KB, dimensions 1200px x 1800px.
After resizing to 668px x 722px with 72dpi, the file size decreased to 307KB.
So, there seems to be a fair file size loss - is this to be expected?

  • Cropping layer in Photoshop Elements

    Hey~
I have just started using Photoshop Elements.I have three different pictures i their each individual layerss. I would like to crop one and when i use the crop tool it crops all the layers together. I have done my research and i tried using the Marquee Rectangular tool to select what I want. But, after I Inverse, I cant do Edit Clear( as suggested else where) becasue it "won't work". I also cannot do cntrl J to select that in a new layer. It just wont let me.
If this doesn't make sense, feel free to ask questions.
I appriciate any kind of help:-)
    Thank you!

Here's a couple of non-destructive methods to crop a layer.
With the layer selected, make your selection with the marquee. Right-click the selection and select Layer via Copy. Hide the original layer.
With the layer selected, make your selection with the marquee, click Add Layer Mask. I like this one as (if you unlink the mask) you can then reposition the mask in the layer image.
    Cheers,
    Neale

Ya, okay ! I use a number of PSE programs, one of which is PSE 9. The tools for some reason seem to have frozen. When I use the move tool I don't get just one hand but 3 hand symbols all next to each other. Same thing with the crop tool, I don't get one symbol but 3 all next to each other. There are a couple of tools that just don't work at all.  It's like the PSE 9 got hit with some virus or sorts. Oh well, live and learn.  Trying to get through to tech service is next to impossible.

Have you seen this other thread you started about this problem?
Photoshop Elements 9 is messed up.
    Did you use Barbara's fix?
It would be less confusing if you only posted this question once, not three times:
HOW DO I RESET ALL THE TOOLS IN PSE 9 ? THE CURSOR IS REALLY MESSED UP AND DOES NOT WORK WITH THE TOOLS. I TOUCH THE HAND AND I GET 3 HANDS, I TRY TO USE THE CROP AND I GET 3 SMALL CIRCLES.  THE CURSOR IS REALLY MESSED UP. DO I HAVE TO GET ANOTHER PSE 9 ?

  • Cropping Photoshop Elements 5 Problem

For no apparent reason my setting for Cropping has changed in that when I crop I no longer retain the CUSTOM setting throughout the cropping.
    I will explain.
I have the image on screen and the Setting is Aspect Ratio CUSTOM  (I crop to 9” x 6” with resolution 300dpi)
I crop and get the usual green tick and the red cancel circle BUT the moment I click the green tick the CUSTOM setting changes and becomes Use PHOTO ASPECT.
It never used to do that but always remained at the CUSTOM setting.
How can I return to the former situation please?
    Thank you for any assistance.
    Floundering

The best I can do is look at PSE3 on my old XP. I don't have PSE5. I'll check when I get a chance.
Have you considered using the marquee tool to do your cropping? The marquee will crop to the resolution of the document. To change document resolution, go to Image menu and select Resize; then Image Size.
To set up your marquee, select the marquee tool and look at the options bar. Look for the box that says style. Change that setting to "Fixed Size". You'll notice a Width and Height box become available. Input your numbers along with abbreviation for unit of measure into these boxes. (width = 9 in; Height = 6 in). Now, go to the Edit menu and select "Crop".
Edit: Marquee settings for style and size are sticky.
Hmmm. Shouldn't be getting a log off button when you press and hold alt, shift, and control keys as you launch Photoshop Elements. You can also do this manually. There are directions on this page:
Windows Vista...look at step 3...just the preference file steps... stop when it comes to the re-create registry values.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405398.html
Windows XP...look at step 4...just the preference filesteps... stop when it comes to the re-create registry values.

Note: The preferences are in Hidden file folders so you have to have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" checked in your Windows Folder options.

  • Undo cropping done via Photoshop elements

I dragged a photo directly from iPhoto into Photoshop Elements (rather than saving it to the desktop first, then dragging to Elements) and cropped it, then clicked "save." Now when I go into iPhoto, I can see the full, uncropped image in the thumbnail, but when I double-click to enlarge it, I can see only my edited image from Photoshop. I tried to control/click on the image to "restore to original," but that option was not available to me. I no longer have the image in my camera. Is there a solution?

No, because that's not how you use iPhoto and Elements together.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

    Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
Have you tried resetting the tools?
Click on the small down triangle at the top left of the tools and select Reset all tools
Once you are in the crop tool, you are clicking on the accept tick or the cancel symbol aren't you?
