Cropping limitation in PSE 13

I recently upgraded from version 10 to 13. When cropping in version 10, I normally wanted to maintain an aspect ratio of 3:2 as in the original image. I did this in the crop tool by selecting "Use Photo Ratio". This defaults the width and height to the existing pixel size of the image.  Next I would drag the crop tool to the desired size and position, which maintains the aspect ratio. Finally, before committing the crop, I changed from "Use Photo Ratio" to "No Restriction", and then did the commit. This resulted in a cropped image with pixel dimensions as I had set using the crop tool, and with the same aspect ratio as the original photo.  No manual setting of pixels was required.
I cannot do this in PSE 13. If I try the above, as soon as I change from "Use Photo Ratio" to "No Restriction", I lose the crop tool sizing and positioning that I just did. Bug? Not sure, but the way it worked in version 10 was great. So if I want to do this in 13, do I have to just start off with "No Restriction" and do calculations on pixel widths/heights to give the correct aspect ratio?  I hope there is an easier way.
Thanks.

I'm not replying to your OP here because I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish by this workflow, but I would point out that your other posts do indeed have responses to them:

  • Why was the golden ratio removed from the crop tool in PSE 13?

Why remove features?  Put it back in.  I think it's time to go back to 10.  Everything about that version was better than 13, except the 64-bit part.

    Hi MBP,
I'm new to this software, but I don't think that you're correct in saying that PSE13 is the first to suggest crops. In looking around at various tutorials, cropping guidelines are mentioned for versions 10 and on. Adobe's own "What's New In PSE 13" site, formally states that the golden ratio cropping guideline is no longer available. See (near bottom):
Photoshop Elements Help | What's new in Photoshop Elements 13
I regret it, because I could really use that guide. From what I've seen of the guide in earlier PSE versions, it looked like a clumsy implementation. To use this guide properly you want to be able to put the focus point in any of four possible places inside a crop. It looks like they used to support only two locations. Perhaps it was yanked because they need to do a lot of work on the interface to get this complex guiding tool implemented correctly. Maybe the next release?

  • Slideshow Size Limitation on PSE 9?

My PSE 9 slideshow keeps crashing at the same spot on both Preview and WMV build processes. I have about 200 pictures averaging 1 MB and 4 songs in the show and it keeps crashing about 64% of the way through. Previous builds worked fine but started crashing after I added 10 additional pictures. Is there a size limitation?

I’ve never tried with so many images.
Try cutting the size in half; then joining the wmv clips in Windows Movie maker or another free utility, and finally adding the music mix.

  • When creating a DVD face in Photoshop 13 my save options are limited to .PSE and .PDF.  Why can I not save as a jpeg or other file format?  This was never an issues in Elements 10 (my previous version).

I just recently purchased Elements 13. I am in the process of creating a DVD face for a video. The design is complete and I would like to be able to save it as a JPEG so I can use it in another program that prints my DVD's. The problem is that it only allows me to save the file as at PSE or a PDF. No other options are available. Why is this?  I upgraded from Elements 10. In Elements 10 I have never had a problem saving this type of project as a JPEG.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    ANSWER FOUND!
Once I finished composing my question I went back and spent some time to figure out the problem. Rather than choosing the "save as" option, which doesn't work, or attempting to choose "export" (grayed out), the correct option is to choose "export creation", which is near the very bottom of the initial drop down options. That works!  I still think it would make sense to have it as an option in the "save as" area.

  • Cropping script for PSE 6

I would like to know how to create a script for photo shop elements. I understand that Adobe photo shop allows the use of scripts and I was wondering if it is possible to do the following:
Use a combination of keys to crop either the top, bottom, left or right side by 5% or by a number of pixels.
I.e. set-up four shortcut key combinations to crop the top, bottom, left and right edges of an image.
This may seem rather specific, but I have a disability and I try to avoid using the mouse where humanly possible. I use voice recognition software and this can be programmed by command to press a set of keys. I can further program this to do a combination of key presses a number of times e.g. crop top three (and this would press the combination of keys three times cropping the top of the picture three times in 5% increments or by a set amount of pixels each time).
Any thoughts or guidance would be very much appreciated.
*** I orignally posted this last December (Now May 2010). I was wondering if anyone could offer advice ***

Any thoughts on the above would be appreciated.

  • PSE 13: Disabling Crop Suggestions

In an attempt to disable Crop Suggestions in PSE 13 on my PC running Windows 7, I went to Edit/Preferences/General and unchecked the box labeled Enable Crop Preselection. This action did not disable crop suggestions. Is there something else I can do to disable Crop Suggestions. I find it annoying and would very much like to make it go away.

You're right, of course, but it'd surely be nice to get rid of the suggestions altogether. Oh, well, I reckon I'll live with it.

  • Custom cropping using pixel dimension

The banner image module for my website requires images cropped to 940 x 400 pixels. When I use the Custom cropping function in PSE 12 (on a Mac OSX 10.9.2), it only shows a cm dimension. Can I do a custom crop using a pixel dimension?

You should just be able to type 940 px and 400 px in the width and height fields
Another way is to use the Rectangular Marquee Tool and use Aspect>Fixed Size then enter 940 px X 400 px

  • Photoshop Elements 11- Create and save multiple page PDF's?  Software bug or new limitation?

I just upgraded from Photoshop Elements 10 to Photoshop Elements 11.  One of the reasons I stayed with Adobe rather than Corel was the ability to work with multipage PDF's.
I noticed that I can't add more than one page to a project and save a multiple page PDF.  I can open a multiple page PDF, but not create or save one.
Is this a new limitation, or just a software bug Adobe plans to fix?
Has anyone found a way to work with multiple page PDF's in Photoshop Elements 11?

It's a new limitation in PSE 11, for one of those mysterious adobe reasons.

  • No Thumnails for MJPEG AVIs in PSE 11 Organizer

My AVI Video clips are not showing thumbnails in the PSE 11 Orgazizer.
Here is what I have observed as I have been troubleshooting this:
    The files are MJPEG.
When I double click on it in the organizer window, I get audio, but no video.
If I open the file for edit in Premier Elements, the video thumbnail shows up in project assests and the video correctly plays in the Premier Elements editor.
If I double click on the files in Windows Explorer they open up in Quicktime Version 7.
The thumbnails for the files show in up windows explorer  when I browse to the folder they are in.
I selected a file in PSE, chose 'Export to New File" and the file that I created by doing that showed a generic Quicktime icon without the thumbnail in windows explorer.   When I double click on that file it correctly plays in Quicktime.
Selecting "Update Thumbnail" has no effect.
Any one have any ideas what is going on with the organizer that might be causing this beavior or is this a know limitation of PSE Organizer.  What is the point of having the organizer supporting video If I can't see the video without opening it in the Premier Elements Editor?

  • PSE +

I just purchased PSE 9 for the mac and having used the full version of PS before at work I miss the grouping of layers function (among some others like the pen tool).
I understand that you can use the create clipping mask function but this is not what I am looking for as I look to use grouping for keeping layers in folders (same as full version).
I've just seen the following advertised but I'm not sure if this is legit or not:
    http://simplephotoshop.com/elementsplus/
Is this genuine, has anyone used this?
I guess having to post a topic on it is probably enough to know it's not right but thought I would enquire anyway...

I have elements+ and I've used it. It's worth the money, I think, just for the time it saves, since they're all just actions that you could write yourself if you had access to a copy of CS5, but it would take a long time to create that many actions and thumbs. As 99jon says, it doesn't completely do the things it claims--only as far as PSE lets you. For example, since for some mysterious adobe reason adobe chose to disable the use of individual color channels for curves starting with PSE 4, it can't give you that without a kludgy workaround. To give another example, it can bring up the soft proofing dialog box, but since PSE doesn't support CMYK mode, the usefulness of that is severely limited in PSE. Still it's a lot of good actions for relatively small change.
For layer groups, if you use these extensively you would probably be happier with PS, but you might also want to take a look at this:
    http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48026
Incidentally, I've never heard of Elements+ causing any conflicts with anything already in PSE.

  • Curves layer in new PSE?

I usually use Photoshop CS for my editing, but I'm buying a laptop that is not as powerful as my desktop, so was thinking of going with a photo editor that is a bit 'lighter' that PS, so looking at PS Elements.
I understand that you can create files with layers, and that PSE includes a few adjustment layers as well; and also that you can apply a full range of blending options (screen, multiply, overlay, soft light, hue, color, etc.). I have a few questions:
Does the newest version of PSE include a curves adjustment layer? And if not, does it at least have a Curves adjustment, even if not as a layer adjustment? and/or I've heard of some plug-ins that provide a curve feature--are these any good?
Does PSE save images as .PSD files, and if yes, I assume that I can open them in PS too, is that right?
Does PSE have a High Pass filter?
Are there any limits to the file depth: 8-bit, 16-bit, etc. and can I work in AdobeRGB color space?
Finally, is there any file size limits in PSE, either the file or the image size?
As an aside to all this, I wish Adobe would make this type of basic information more easily available. They seem to be caught up in providing us with so much fluff on their website, that they don't give us the information we need.
    Best, David.

PSE has an odd curves tool, called color curves that doesn't create an adjustment layer. You can use one of the many add-on toolsets to add a curves adjustment layer to PSE, but it will always be for the combined RGB channel, so of limited use. In windows, the free Smart Curve filter is good, but there is no mac equivalent.
Here is a screenshot of the PSE color curves dialog:
Does PSE save images as .PSD files, and if yes, I assume that I can open them in PS too, is that right?
    Yes.
Does PSE have a High Pass filter?
    Yes.
Are there any limits to the file depth: 8-bit, 16-bit, etc. and can I work in AdobeRGB color space?
You can work in Adobe RGB and you can use both 8 and 16 bit files, but the use of layers and artistic filters on 16 bit files is still severely limited in PSE. It's about where PS was back in CS1 in that respect.
Finally, is there any file size limits in PSE, either the file or the image size?
In the editor the limit is 30,000 px per side. For organizer, see:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/maximum-image-size-limits-photoshop.html
I would suggest doing the trial and giving it a good hard workout. Ask here if you have more questions. Adobe's attempts to simplify the interface mean that it's not always easy to know what all is available, even with the program open in front of you.

  • Cropping Tool in Elements 8

Having had no previous trouble with the cropping tool, I had just created the cropping area (rectangular) and while I was moving the cursor up to images>crop the shape turned to ellipse. It is still doing it. Any solutions, please?

Your picture didn't upload. You need to come to the website and use the camera icon above the message area to upload a photo. Here's all I have for the crop tool in PSE 10:

  • Can't find all my Layer options in the layer bins???? PSE 9

I have photoshop elements 9 on a Macbook pro using OS 10.6.8  I am sure there is a simple solution to my problem.  I can't always find my actions, bricks and all the "goodies in the full edit mode.  Sometimes they are there then other times there is only a limited selection,  PSE is my external editor.  I shoot raw, make my adjustments then convert to 8 bit for layers and adjustments.  I am scratching my head because I know there is a check or button or drop down box I am missing.
Looking forward to a simple solution.
    Thanks,
    Liza in Kansas

What bricks? PSE editor has three different modes: full edit where you have access to everything, quick edit which just gives you basic fixes, and guided edit, which includes the actions player. If you installed your actions in the actions player, click Guided at the upper right of your screen. If you installed your actions in the effects panel, you want to be in Full edit.

  • Photoshop Elements 13 slideshow themes are very limited and unconfigurable

I have upgraded from PSE 11 to 13. The slideshow themes are very constrained and unconfigurable.  Is there a plan to enable PSE 12 type features or add more themes - or allow users to build themes?

I have also just upgraded to PSE 13. One of the improvements that I was looking for was higher quality video output for slideshows (in PSE 10 the options were extremely limited).  Indeed, the output quality is better, but the "Themes" are woefully inadequate. I just want a simple (ie no pan & slide) slideshow, but one that allows me to change the display time by photo.
To get round the previous limitations of PSE. I have been using Magix PhotoStory.  It does everything I want plus a whole lot more.....

  • Missing Crop Tool from Tool Bar

I was using the Crop Tool in PSE 9 Guided Editing and now it is gone from the Tool Bar.  I have to go to the Image pull down menu to find it, and when I do, part of the image is already partially cropped.  How do I turn that off and return the icon to the Tool Bar?
    Thanks,

Right click on the re-compose tool and choose the standard crop tool.
