Cropping MPEG-1 files

I am having a terrible time cropping MPEG-1 in Compressor 1.2.1. I am exporting from Final Cut 4.2, and the preview window shows the cropping, but when I process the conversion, the final file has no cropping at all. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

I think the "Crop" behavior in Compressor is described incorrectly in some parts of the manual. The key is given in the following statement from the Compressor User Manual:
"As you reduce the clip image by cropping it, the output image will be scaled up to fill the new output frame size. This effect is similar to zooming in on an image, which results in larger pixels and overall image degradation."
Thus, you can't produce what you might consider a true crop of the image. All you can do is matte with black bars, or zoom, or distort (or a combination of the above). Thus, for example, you can't output a cropped MPEG1 encoding that would result in a movie with dimensions of 320 x 180. This is because Compressor only supports MPEG1 in 320 x 240 or 352 x 240 sizes. A similar situation exists for MPEG2 and DV, they must conform to a set of fixed dimensions and aspect ratios.
The best you can probably do is to use a matte filter and then output what will appear to be a letterboxed movie in a 320 x 240 frame. You can then apply a mask in QuickTime that will remove the black bars so that during playback you will only see the active image area of the movie. Thus, you letterbox the image with a matte and then "crop" the black bars during display with a QuickTime mask. Or, you can just forget about applying the matte in Compressor and just mask the image with QuickTime.
However, with some codecs (like MPEG4 or H.264) you can use just about any aspect ratio and output dimension that you'd like. Thus, I suspect that with Final Cut Pro you could create a sequence that could be output into any aspect ratio that you desired as long as you handled the source video distortion and scaling yourself (and the latter could produce any form of rectangular crop that you desired). However, this would only work when you exported to a codec that allowed arbitrary dimensions so that you could restore the proper (non-distorted) aspect ratio to the image.<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. • QT 7 opens 720x480 MPEG-2 files @ 640x480 ?

    Hello
When I open 720x480 MPEG-2 files in QT Pro 7 they are cropped to 640x480 which is also indicated as the "original size" in the info window.. This doesn't seem to affect the original file nor does it seem to matter which compressor I have used to compress them.
FWIW, VLC opens the same files @ 720x480.
Anyone know why this is happening ?
    Thanks
    Tim

They're not cropped, they're scaled. The reason is because NTSC and PAL video is 4:3 aspect ratio, but dots on a TV are not square. This means that the DV file for NTSC has to be 720x480, and for PAL it's 720x576. For playback on a computer screen that has square pixels the video is resized to get the 4:3 ratio back again.
The best resize for NTSC video is 640x480, because then the fields don't get intermingled. For PAL a size of 768x576 would be better, though I suspect that QuickTime would show it as 640x480 too. 720x540 may seem like another good NTSC choice, but for that the field lines have to be scaled up, and that may introduce strange field effects.

  • HT3775 mpeg-2 file using OS 10.8.2 and Quicktime Player 10.2

I'm trying to open an mpeg-2 file with Quicktime Player 10.2 and OS 10.8.2. Apple says the playback component for earlier versions of Quicktime is already built in to this version, but I'm getting video only--no audio. My Sony blue ray player has no trouble playing the same file via a flash drive and the USB port. Is there a component or an update that I need?

A friend has sent me a MPEG-4 File that when I try and import to FCPX a message comes up saying 'no importable files'.
I have tried to re-wrap it in Clipwrap and convert it in MPEG Streamclip but it won't even import in them app's.
I can watch the video in VLC but not in Quicktime.
Does anyone have any idea to what I can do to edit this video in FCPX?

I have no experience with, or knowledge of the files you are using but it might be worth trying the free app Subler.

    HI,
If iChat is Open and your think Accounts/Screen Names are logged in then go to the Window Menu
This should list the accounts that are logged in with various keystrokes ( Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) and a Number) shown next to them.
Using these should get the Buddy list "back".
It is possible to Hide the Buddy list and then Quit iChat.
iChat will then "remember" where the windows were eve if this was Hidden.
Can you confirm that after reinstalling or restoring from Time Machine with possibly an Earlier Version you have Downloaded the COMBO version of OS X 10.6.8 and "run the COMBO" (Installed it - again) to update iChat ?
It is possible the text chat Window is also Hidden on double clicking a Buddy.
The easiest way for this to happen is to use a second Display and drag some windows to the second Display.
iChat "remembers" where you last had Outgoing Chats so Audio and Video windows will be where you left them as will Text Chats.
Incoming Chat Invites are normally in set places unless there is a chat already open to that Buddy.
With  Windowing issue like this is sometimes pays to delete com.apple.ichat.plist itself  (on it's own) and restart iChat  (this plist holds the window positions amongst other things)

  • MPEG-2 file has out of sync audio - PLEASE HELP

We captured four mini-DV tapes into Final Cut Pro HD using my Canon mini DV camera and a firewire. After capture we put each tape on its own timeline, added chapter markers, and then compressed each one into MPEG-2 files using the QT codec. Once we had the compressed files we deleted the origional footage and burned DVDs with the MPEG-2s.
After viewing the DVDs we realized that the audio was out of sync on each of them. It seems to get pregressively worse as the tape plays (the beginning is close to being in sync and at the end it's a few seconds off). Each tape is about 59 minutes long.
We really need to fix this and do not have access to the orional/captured footage. Does anyone have any ideas?

You deleted the original footage before you verified anything !
Sorry, this is just <princess bride voice> inconceivable <pbv off>
Use MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to extract a DV NTSC file from the VOB files.
Drop that in the time line.
export the audio as an AIFF file
Open the file in Peak or similar application that change the length of the audio file without changing the pitch.
    reimport the file to FCP
Re export the file as a m2v and burn a new disk.
Swear on whatever is holy that you will NEVER delete source footage again if you do not have access to original tapes/media.

  • IMovie 08 MPEG 2 File Import

    Hi,
I have been doing video editing on a PC and now moving to iMac. I use it as a DVR recording TV movies to later watch on DVD. From this forum I know I need to convert the MPEG 2 files to a format acceptable to iMovie. I have installed Streamclip with the QT MPEG 2 plugin and ready to go. There are several options and my guess is I want to use the export to DV or MPEG4 selection. Can someone give me the specific steps I need to take within Streamclip to get my files ready to import into iMovie for editing and DVD burning? Thanks

Can someone give me the specific steps I need to take within Streamclip to get my files ready to import into iMovie for editing and DVD burning?
    1) Open MPEG Streamclip
    2) Drop or use the "Open Files..." File menu command to navigate to/load your MPEG file(s) for conversion. (NOTE: VOB file sets or multiple MPEG/M2V file segments constituting a single complete video can be loaded all at once if their alpha-numeric names provide proper sequencing.)
    3) Select the "Export to DV" File menu option
    4) Select you compression type. (DV25 is standard but you can use DVCPRO25 or DVCPRO50 if the larger files are not a problem for storage)
    5) Select your standard (NTSC for the US and Canada)
    6) Select the aspect ration that matches your MPEG source files (4:3 standard screen or 16:9 widescreen)
    7) Other main settings should not normally be needed unless your source files made using non-standard settings
    8) You may or may not want to make "adjustments" to brightness, contrast, saturation, and/or volume
    9) Preview and when satisfied press the "Make DV" button

  • MPEG-4 File Properties & Vista

    Hi
I have recently had to upgrade to Windows Vista. When I used Windows XP I was able to edit the file properties of both MPEG-4 file properties (details) and MPEG-3 files. Both file types interacted directly with the iTunes Get Info menu.
Unfortunately, I can no longer edit MPEG-4 file properties and when changes are made using Get Info they are not reflected in Windows Explorer.
I have examined permissions, but this doesn't seem to make any difference.
What happened to all the file properties? How can I edit MPEG-4 files?
I do like to make all my files consistent, but am no longer able too.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Duncan

Are you running as administrator? You can turn off the security, that might help. You would be same as XP then. Can you edit the properties using Windows Explorer (right click on file name, go to properties menu option, Details tab). I don't have iTunes on my Vista as yet, but you might first confirm that outside of iTunes you can make the changes. If not, that would give you a clue as to why iTunes cannot either.

  • Imported MPEG-4 file into Imovie 09 no picture only sound

Imported a MPEG-4 file taken from a Samsung HD video, into IMovie (5.0.2), sound plays but no picture

Problem is worsening, I think. Now, just about any clip I try to import has no sound. I just tried an MP4 video, and it actually seemed to have work, until I realized the sync is miles away from being correct. I must have some major problems with my system; I seem to be the only one struggling with this.

  • PS Camera Raw is forcing a crop on CR2 files. Can I stop this?

Photoshop raw is cropping my cr2 images even after I have removed the crop in DPP (Digital Photo Professional - Canon's own raw editing software). I have many images cropped by a Canon 5D3 as it forces a 16:9 crop when you take a still while in video mode. The rest of the data is in the raw file, but this is not read by Camera Raw which forces the 16:9 crop. I have removed the crops in DPP, and even re-cropped with a different crop, saved the files and used every way I can imagine to get them into PS short of turning them into tiffs. I do not want to save as a tiff, as I really like the tools in PS Raw, especially the exposure tool (I am no great photographer but I have some very special and irreplaceable pics form fieldwork overseas which are ahem errr not quite correctly exposed).
My ideal worflow is open folder in DPP - star rate the pics I want to work on. crop them (nice to do this in DPP as it is part of the selection process) then get them into Camera Raw without any more effort, then if an image can be tweaked - do it as a Raw, if it needs more work - get it into PS6 as a tiff and go from there. This seems to minimise effort and minimise file space, at the expense of having two different file types.
Does anyone else work like this, or is there a better way to review 300 similar pics and get the best selected and processed? Has anyone else encounteres this refusal of Camera Raw to ignore the camera's crop? I bleive that there is a plug-in for lightroom, does anyone know a work around for PS  - I have PS6 with raw 7.3.
    Thanks
    Gor

Thanks, the fact is that it doesnt ignore the crop - it forces it and removes the data outside the crop. This is a known issue that Adobe do not seem to have addressed, and there seems to be a work-around in lightroom using a plug-in, but apparently not for ACR.
I have now found out how to work in ACR in tiffs, whcih is OK, although at 120MB per pic it is very space hungry, but I was hoping to get the cropping and any rotation done before converting to tiffs in the belief that the fewer times you process the actual pixels in an image the better. Is this true, is it better to roatate in RAW before converting, or rotate in tiff after converting?
I wish I could say I was the sort of photogrpher that never needed suvch things but my work is almost jounalistic in the fractioons of a second I sometimes have to get a camera out and get a pic. I spend a lot of time trying to dregdge something useable out of my images!

    PLease help...
    Thx in advance!

OK, did some digging and this is the deal.
Inspite of Apple's vague description, the MPEG-2 codex works only with QuickTime 7 (which matches my installation). You do not need to have QT 7 Pro to view MPEG-2 files, but you do need it to transcode MPEG-2 to other formats. The plug in does not allow creating of MPEG-2 files.
You can also try searching download sites such as MacUpdate. There are shareware and freeware  utilities that claim to convert MPEG-2 files, but I can't vouch for them personally.

I can't import MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Express HD. Before I bought the software, I took an MPEG-2 file to the Apple store and they imported it just fine. This is why I decided to buy the software. I know it can work, I just don't know why it won't work on my Mac. Anyone have any ideas?

Well, I figured if I talked to myself long enough, I might figure it out. I did. I had to buy the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback component in order to import these files into Final Cut Express HD. I have the video in FCE HD rendering. If there was another way, I'm waiting to hear.
