Cropping multiple clips, then resizing canvas - how?

I've made a simple video in iMovie 10 that I'd now like the crop and resize. The tricky part is that there are 3 separate clips, so when I use the crop tool, they shift. I tried selecting all, then Edit/Connect, but that didn't seem to help. Once I figure out how to make the crop, I'd like to resize the canvas in order to create more whitespace around my subject (LCD display of a CDJ)
I realize my question may not be clear, so I've made a screencap of my iMovie workspace with annotations. Hopefully this will make sense to one of you helpful people!

Hi
I don't think You can do that in iMovie. (any version)
I would Export out and use QuickTime Pro to change this - then re-import the result to iMovie and movie project.
or rather - I would do this in - FinalCut Pro

  • How to crop to a specific aspect ratio, then resize to specific size?

    HI,
I need a running start, could someone please help me accomplish a specific task.
    1) I need to be able to restrict a crop tool to a specific aspect ratio, then resize the cropping tool as I like to make my selection.
    2) After, I need to resize the image to a set size... (so all my pictures wind up the same size.)
After I would normally set my text the way I like it and add text to every picture (so it is the same size in all photos.) and save them.
I do this in Paintshop with ease, but do not see the kind of controls on the cropping tool, or a place to resize an image other than the save.
I just purchased Photoshop/Lightroom so I am in this with both feet, I could really use the help to get started in this because I need to work on this now or  or go back to Paintshop until I can figure it out when I get the time.
    Thanks,
It is not easy to ask for help.
    Kevin

OK, first a basic explanation: LR is not like Paintshop or Photoshop because it is a Raw converter and all Raw converters work non-destructively. This means that any edits that you set in the Develop panel are not actually carried out on the original image file, but rather only recorded for future reference. That future moment comes when you export (create and output) a new tif, psd or jpg file, send an image to Photoshop or some other secondary editor, or send the image to a printer.
Now for the cropping: Select the crop tool in the tool bar under the Develop histogram. A drop-down menu offers a selection of the more common aspect ratios or you can set a custom ratio. Use the X key to toggle between landscape and portrait orientations. Set the crop box to the size and location you want by dragging the corners and close it. The crop is recorded in the catalog database file and this info will be used when you export the image. Because no actual cropping and/or resizing is done until export, the resizing instructions are on the Export dialog. This way the same crop configuration can be used with differently resized exports. Tick the Resize box and put in the pixel dimensions you want. Alternately, put in a size in inches or centimeters and a pixels per inch (ppi) resolution and LR will calculate the pixel dimensions. If you are resizing, I'd highly recommend also enabling Output Sharpening. It is interactive with the resizing and automatically does the optimum sharpening for the amount (and type) of resampling being done.
If you want a number of images to be the same size, export them all together by, after editing and cropping them, selecting them all in the Library grid or the filmstrip and then running the Export dialog

  • How to move multiple clips with transitions?

Im still transitioning from FCP7 to FCP 10.1.2 and can't believe I have missed the lesson that explains how to move multiple clips with transitions.
Up till now I have tried several work arounds including deleting all the transitions then using the (P) Position tool to move the clips from the primary track to some track above it then re adding all the transitions.  This is a function I do on a daily basis.  Am I missing something?  Please help!
    Thank you

With some further investigation, the transitions have nothing to do with my problem.  In my case there was a tiny “Black gap slug” within the group that was preventing me from being able set it on top of another group of clips or gap someplace.  But even with the gap removed… I can move the clips on top of another group but the transitions stay behind on the primary (Magnetic)
In the screen shot you can see what happens when I move a group out of the primary (magnetic) timeline onto a gap.  All the transitions get left behind.
Ive notices that Cutting and pasting will only paste the sequence some other place on the primary (magnetic) timeline for me.
An example of why I would want to put a cropped/ resized group on top of another group is to do picture in picture effects or if I wanted to create a background behind a set of adjusted clips.

  • How can you find out an individual image size from multiple images on a canvas

This is probably a really really simple question but I can't for the life of me find how I can find out an individual image size from multiple images on a canvas. eg I have 3 photos i want to arrange 1 large and the other two next to it half the size. How can I edit individual image size on the canvas as when I select the image on a sperate layer I want to resize it just resizes the entire canvas and not the individual image
    Thanks

I want to know they exact dimensions though. You can get them by dragging to the 0,0 corner and then reading off of the ruler scale on the sides but its fiddily as you have to zoom right in and work it out. I know in photoshop there is a ruler but is there any other way in Elements?

  • How do I add a video effect to multiple clips in my timeline at once?

How do I add a video effect to multiple clips in my timeline at once?

or... you can command click to select all the clips you want to apply the effect to, then double click the effect in the Effects browser. (PS - you can't simply drag and drop an effect on multiple clip selections, the effect will only be applied to the clip you drop it on -- but double clicking the effect will apply it to all selected clips at once.)

  • How to apply Time Remap to multiple clips simultaneously

Quite often after trimming many different clips for a wedding video I will then want the majority of them slowed down to a 50% speed. I know how to apply the Time Remap Speed % change in the Motion Tab, but have yet to figure out how to make the change to multiple clips simultaneously.
    Thanks for your help!

You can apply a speed change from one clip to multiple clips by copying the first one, then pasting attributes (option + V, then select speed from the list) onto as many clips as you have selected.
Just be aware that this will ripple your timeline by extending all of your clips. FCP keeps the original out point of the source clip, not the out point of each cut on the T/L.

  • How to apply basic motion to multiple clips

    Hello!
How do I apply basic motion parameters to multiple clips? ie Scale, center and crop? Do I have to set the parameters for each specific clip or can I apply the parameters to multiple clips at once?
    Thanks

I'm going to assume you want to assign the exact same motion tab setting to additional clips.
Set one of your clips as desired in the motion tab
highlight the modified clip in the timeline
    type Cmnd-C to copy
highlight the clips you want to have the setting applied to
    type Option-V to paste
in the pop-up window uncheck all boxes except Basic Motion
    click the OK button

  • How to "crop" a clip

    Hi,
I need help with the following. I edit medical clips and need to remove the patient's identification data on the edges of the clips. I recently upgraded from Premiere 6 to CS6. In the older version the "CROP" tool covered the cropped area with black and was not useful. The tool to use was "Image PAN" that allowed to keep just a portion of the image and discard the areas outside the "Image pan". I would then export the remainder of the clip to its new size. For instance I would start from a 900 by 720 pixel clip and export the area of interest, such as 480 by 360 pixels. In the image i would like to keep just the area in the red box.
Any ways to do this in CS6 ? Any step-by-step technique ?
    thanks for any suggestions

OK, I have to put my two cents worth in here. Either I am completely confused or my old friends on this thread are missing the entire point.
PJ, I will call you PJ until told your real name because your screen name is just too, well, medical. Nothing personal, but I have trouble with the title Plebotomist as well.
In any case, I have no idea why anyone would tell you to edit to a certain size when all you have to do is crop the output just before you export it. Now, I must say that I very highly recommend that you export to a frame size where both dimensions are evenly divisible by 8. You don't really want the details, is my guess, so just trust me on that one. 480X360 is a good choice.
Ah, but how do I crop on export you say?
    Simple.
I don't have any video with 900X720 frames, so I just copied your image from up above and scaled it up in Photoshop to 900X720.  Make sense so far? Good.
I imported the scaled up image into Premiere Pro and dropped it on the New button to create a new sequence based on the image.  Still with me?
Now that I have the image (or clip) on the correct size sequence for my source material, just assume I did whatever you do to put titles on it, or color correct it or whatever and now it is time to export.
In the Export Settings window that comes up, I move over to click on the Source tab instead of looking at the Output tab. I select the crop tool. Then I use the drop down arrow next to Crop Proportions and choose the 4:3 ratio because you indicated that would be good for you, right? There are many other choices. Try to be careful and size the box to 480X360 so you get a better output. But if that is not the right size, you might want to scale the video up or down a little as required. Or not, if you are happy with the output quality.
Now click on the Output tab and select "Change Output Size To Match Source". Notice that the frame size over on the right changes to 480X360.
Sorry about your red lines but as you can see, my output is a perfect 4:3 while your red box is not.
Now all you have to do is import the FLV file into Flash, put it on a stage and export as SWF. Or export to something Sorenson likes and let Sorenson convert to SWF.
Simple. Just like I said. Right?
Now, is that what you really wanted or am I the one who is confused?

  • Process multiple images... How do you CROP them?

I'm trying to process a bunch of photos. The first thing I need to do is crop them to a certain size. But in the Process Mulitiple Files dialog box, the only option I see is to resize - not crop - them. So I'm ending up with squished photos instead of cropped ones.
Does anyone know how to crop them using the multiple process?
    Thanks.

    Frank,
If you are trying to change the aspect ratio to the desired output format,
you still have to discard some portion(s) of your image. Many digital
cameras shoot in a 4:3 aspect ratio. If you want 6 x 4 prints, you will
have to crop to that ratio. In a simple case, the entire width can be used,
but the height will be excessive by about 11%. Now, the entire 11% can be
cropped out of the top or the bottom. Or it can be taken from both top and
bottom in any kind of proportion. Again, each image should be individually
evaluated and the crop area should be manually defined, based on the content
    of the photo.

  • How to select multiple clips? "Help" is wrong.

Hi. I've got iMovie 11 v 9.0.9.  "Help" is wrong in this version -  it says, to select multiple clips in the Events browser, hold down the command key while selecting - the normal thing, right?  - but it does nothing.  The first selection disappears, just as it would if you didn't hold the Command key down.  I've tried every combination of keys and click I can think of, and still no success.  Usually, when I can't get something to work and get frustrated with it, I find out it's my own fault and invariably what I've done is overthink the thing...with Mac it's always KISS.
But I'm stuck.  Could someone please tell me how to do this?
I'd really appreciate any help, thanks.
    Lynne

No. In finder hold down the option key and in the GO menu select Library. In the window that appears Open the  Preferences folder then scroll down and find com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie LSSharedFileList.plist and drag them to the trash. Do this with iMovie closed. Thenreboot and relaunch iMovie.

  • How to change Opacity Blending on multiple clips...??

    First the problem:
    Whenever I open a Premiere v6.5 project, CS4 does a "conversion."
Maddeningly, during this process, it changes the Opacity\Blending Mode of every single clip in the project to "Color" instead of leaving it at "Normal."
Since I am working with Stereo (3D) footage with a different camera on V2 & V1, I always have at least two, and often many more, video tracks (for titles, etc).
This means I have to go through every single clip on every single video track and reset it to Normal before I can proceed with the project! This can be upwards of 500 clips.
    PITA!!
    1) Does anyone have any idea why this is happening & how to prevent it?
    or,
    2) Is there a way to change this setting in all the clips at the same time?
Whenever I select multiple clips, no Effect Settings (or whatever Shift 5 is called) appear. Only there for single clips.
    TIA,:-)

Do one clip, copy (rightclick) the clip, select all the others and paste attributes.

  • How do you select/move multiple clips from one timeline to another?

Has to do with combining multiple edls from Avid - required due to an issue with duplicate reel names in the original Arri footage. I can move them one at a time, but it is very tedious. Is there a way to select multiple clips and move them together?

Actually discovered the magic of the shift key.
IRCP Beauty doesn't recognize multiple timelines in a session, so first you have to at least get the footage on multiple tracks in the same timeline. Shift + drag on the track will allow you to move it to another timeline. Also Shift + drag on the center of the first clip in a sequence will slide the entire sequence down - which is how timelines end up getthing offset all the time. Also, if there are multiple tracks in a timeline and some are locked and some aren't, Shift + drag on a clip will slide ALL UNLOCKED tracks in the timeline.
Finally, Shift + click on either in or out marker moves both points up or down the timeline.

  • How can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
    Have fun.
