Cropping offset with artboard "fit to selected art" ?

I have been having this problem for a while now, and did a lot of searching and don't seem to see anyone else having this issue!
If I create something in illustrator (in this case, it's a button for a web page), and I create a new artboard and select "fit to selected art", it looks like it fit to it perfectly. Then I go to save for web and devices to export a png, and the top and left sides have extra space, which either shows the background I was working on, or transparency. The only way I can ever get it to crop to the art correctly is to guess at how much it's going to mess up, and do trial and error until I get it right. The box is checked to fit to artboard in my export window too, so that's not it.
Anyone? It's so annoying!

Sure. It's hard to see without zooming, so maybe you should download it and zoom in. Seems like nitpicking, but it's actually a problem that I can't overlook and appears more obvious in different situations.

(One thing that's different is I'm working on a different machine than I was the first day I posted about this, but I'm using the exact same version of InDesign. Would this make a difference? I forgot to copy the original script file from the other computer before coming to work today... If I need to do that, I can.)

Export automation with artboards

Hello,
Our office just upgraded to CS5 and are having some issues with artboards that hopefully someone can help solve.
We used to have a set of actions that would crop artwork to a preset size, then export a TIF. Then, the action would crop at a different size and save as a PDF. These actions no longer work correctly since the 'crop' feature isn't used anymore.
My understanding is that I'd need two artboards set up on the document (both set to their respective sizes.
Upon exporting the TIF file, I would specify which artboard to use in the 'range' area of the dialog box.
Same goes for the PDF. I can record the action easily enough but it doesn't want to play properly since the action doesn't seem to remember the 'range' option. It simply comes up with the last selected range (recorded or otherwise).
Is there any way to have an action recorded in CS5 to accomplish this task? I've been fumbling around with it for a couple days now and have yet to get it work properly.
It's a little frustrating since we have literally thousands of legacy graphics to deal with that can't be exported anymore using the action we had previously set up. We're almost forced to continue to use CS3.

The Action you were using in CS3 was dependent upon the Crop Area>Make command.
In CS5, the Object>Artboards>FitToSelectedArt is recordable in an Action via the Insert Menu Command step from the Actions palette flyout menu. So you can probably devise an Action that does what you want in CS 5 using a combination of that and other recordable functions like Paste, Select Next Object Above / Below, etc.
You shouldn't need additional Artboards to process the pre-existing single-Artboard files. Just use the FitToSelectedArt command to change the size of the existing Artboard before each export.
For example: You could draw two (or more) rectangles and give them names. Copy these to the Clipboard. Your Action could:
PasteInFront.
Select the first rectangle by name.
Resize the artboard to fit it.
Perform the export.
Select the next rectangle by name.
Resize the artboard.
Perform the export.
Etc., etc.

Content not moving with artboard

Kind of a newbie question, but for whatever reason when I try to rearrange artboards most of the content doesn't move with it.
How do I change the content to be associated with a specific artboard?

Oh, layers shouldn't matter, unless they are locked perhaps.
Just ensure the "Move art with artboard" option is clicked when the Artboard Tool is selected.

Make an offset with a variable

Hi all,
In query designer, I want to make an offset with a variable, i explain :
Now, I modify my date manually. for example, i give in selection screen month and year, 05.2008 and i change this date in 04.2008 with a "-1" offset.
I want to give the possibility to make in the selection screen one numeric field which change automatically the offset :
date : 04.2008
offset : -2
=> date = 02.2008.
Can i do this we a variable?
Another way is to ask a second date. (date1, date2) but i prefer make this with an offset.
I can find anything to do this.

Hi,
you can do this with a customer exit variable. Have a look at the [SAP help |http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2004/helpdata/en/1d/ca10d858c2e949ba4a152c44f8128a/frameset.htm] on this subject. Basically what you would be doing is programming in Step 2 after the user has entered the value for variable 1.

Bug in Crop tool with Olympus E-M5 raw files (ORF)

There is a bug in the crop tool with Olympus OM-D E-M5 RAW files (ORF) that is still not fixed with the recent update. Here is how to reproduce the problem.
I setup my E-M5 camera picture aspect ratio to 3:2 (instead of the sensor 4:3) and file format to RAW.
I take a picture.
I import the picture in Lightroom. The first thumbnail I see is the full sensor, then Lightroom computes a new thumbnail and correctly display the 3:2 crop factor.
I select the picture in the library and press [R] to bring the Crop tool.
BUG: The Crop tool does not let me recover the full 4:3 sensor image and is locked to the 3:2 crop factor.

Are you sure you mean Photoshop version 6 the is a very old version of Photoshop before ACR existed. ACR first became available as a extra cost plug-in for Photoshop version 7. ACR started to be shipped with Photoshop with Photoshop CS. Each version since Photoshop CS has a newer version of ACR which is not compatible with older versions of Photoshop. So
CS ACR version is 2.4
CS2 ACR version 3.7
CS3 ACR version 4.6
CS4 ACR version 5.7
CS5 ACR version 6.7
CS6 and CC ACR version 8.4 however the new features in ACR 8.4 for CC are crippled in CS6. CS6 just get the new Camera support.

If you have CS6 use menu help>Updates it should find the ACR 8.4 for CS6 and update your installation. If it does not you can down load it and the DNG converter. However don't convert to DNG just use your OFR RAW files.

If you do mean Photoshop version 6 you need to see if Olympus has a RAW converter for Photoshop version 6 for your camera.

Working with Artboards

Hi,
Is it possible to loop thru the artboards (with Illustrator CS5) and only work with the pageItems on the current iterated artboard?
For example, if I have 3 artboards, with 2 textFrames on each artboard. And I add the textFrames sporadically (I add a TextFrame with contents "Text 1" on artboard 1, then a textFrame with contents "Text 2" on artboard 3, then a textFrame with contents "Text 3" on artboard 1, etc).
Artboard 1:
Text 1
Text 3
Artboard 2:
Text 4
Text 6
Artboard 3:
Text 5
Text 2
Is there a way to loop thru these artboards and get the textFrames tied to the appropariate artboard? So, on the first iteration of the loop, I'm looking at artboard 1 and only looking at "Text 1" and "Text 3", then on the the 2nd iteration I'd be working with artboard 2 and it's textFrames "Text 4" and "Text 6", and so on.
If I loop thru only the doc.textFrames, the order would be incorrect, with the way I added each textFrame. Instead of artboard order, they'd be in this order:
Text 1
Text 2
Text 3
Text 4
Text 5
Text 6
Hope this makes sense, and thanks for looking at my questions.

Can you give me any hints on how to select all the textFrames on the active artboard? I'm assuming I'll need to execute the 'Select all on current artboard' menu under the 'Select' menu. I can't figure out a way to do that in js. I'm trying to stay away from GUI scripting with Applescript System Events.

Cropping pictures with Viewer doesn't work.
Selecting < or ~ 12 pictures. (picture size are Snapshots with iphone resolution) ->Viewers opens and display them. -> Russian roullette between cmd+k or the little crop button. No indication which one will process a crop or which not. -> Both result in picture selection disappear with no crop.

I just tried what you described (although I can't really fathom why you would describe it as Russian roulette (with a variable number of L's). Unless you've been drinking a lot, which is what people are usually doing when they are playing Russian roulette. Your post was hard enough to decipher without that.
Anyway, my cropping was saved each time. I think there's something wrong with your Preview.app. Have you changed anything about the autosave functions of OSX?
I would try:
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
if that doesn't help, then I'd reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.

Get selected art object

I am trying to get the user selected art object properties, I tried written the code below and realised this get all the objects in the layer and store all of them in the AIArtHandle instead of what I selected. I only want to print out the one user selected, how??? any help???

I believe the problem you're having is that selection 'climbs upwards'. That is, if you select some art you also select it's parent, and its parent's parent, etc.
So even if you just select a single path, you're also selecting the group that represents the layer. As such, you might be able to just ask the art if it's a layer group using AIArtSuite::IsArtLayerGroup() and ignore it if it is. I believe the rest will be an accurate depiction of what's selected, be it on art or many.
Oh, and if the art you've selected is a compound path, that call will also include all the sub-component paths. If you don't want them, you can also ask each art in your set if it's part of a compound path by using AIArtSuite::GetArtUserAttr() with kArtPartOfCompound; I believe you can ignore anything that has that, though I'm not sure how it responds when you pass it the container kCompoundPathArt.

A trouble with "LIKE" in a select statement

I'm having trouble with "LIKE" in a select statement...
With Access I can make the following and everything works well:

but if try to do it in my application (it uses Access), it doesn't work - I just can't understand that!!!
In my application the "month" is always the currently month taken from the "System". Look what I'm doing...

Hi Katia,
I'll bet the problem lies with the characters you're using to escape the LIKE clause. You're using the ones that Access likes to see, but that's not necessarily what's built into the JDBC-ODBC driver class.
You can find out what the correct escape wildcard characters are from the java.sql.DatabaseMetaData.getSearchStringEscape() method. It'll tell you what to use in the LIKE clause.
I'm not 100% sure about your code. It doesn't use query1 anywhere. I'd do this:

How do I stop Illustrator automatically adding numbers to file name when exporting with artboard?

I need to export with artboard. Illustrator automatically adds a number to my original file name. It won't even let me replace the old file. It is extremely annoying and makes flow with other programs really hard because they can't auto update, since the file name changes. When you have multiple files, you can't be manually renaming all the time. Anyone knows how to fix this? Thanks.

What is it EXACTLY you are trying to do. Are you trying to export a single page from filename.ai and make it filename.psd, (without any number afterwards). In that case you could delete the extra artboards prior to export, and then you won't have to checked use artbaords as there is only one page. Otherwise I would plan ahead so your end result will be filename-01.jpg, filename-02.jpg, and then everytime you use export artbaords those names will replace.
I am happy with the function as is, and would prefer to have a serial number automatically after the name when checking use artboards. But sounds liek you and others desire more options and thte ability to turn off adding to the filename.

How do I change stills with each menu item selected?

Hi all.
I am trying to create a menu (with 10 items) which contains one single dropzone box, which will contain a still that changes with each menu item selected (instead of 10 different stills next to each item).
I have absolutely no idea how to achieve this! Do I create a different menu for each item? Is there a way to have a slideshow within the menu that changes with each item selected?

THe way to do what you want to do is layered menus which have some limits

What you would do is change the item that appears in the same section - in other words there would be ten layers with a diffrerent picture in the same exact spot, the rectangle buttons sections do not need to be over the picture section

I have tried downloading several fonts, including those from professional societies, but the only way to get Hebrew in my document is to cut and paste. Does anyone know how to fix this? I use an older MacBook running OS 10.9.1. I used to do my Hebrew work in Word, but it is no longer supported by Mac OS.

Just clarifying:
Pages '09 has bad support for Hebrew, Arabic etc but will accept pasted text.
Pages 5 has much better support but with bugs.
If you have columns they are in the wrong order ie Text starts in the left column and ends in the right column.
If you type English into Hebrew text it tends to fall in the wrong position eg instead of to the left of Hebrew punctuation it goes to the right.
As Tom recommends the only real solution on the Mac is Mellel.

The first csv file is easy (report attributes -> report export -> enable CSV output Yes). However, our users demand 2 csv files with different report columns selected to meet their different needs.
(The users don't want to have one csv file with all report columns included. They just want to get whatever they need directly, no extra columns)

I'm doing it usually. Typically example would be in the report only the column "FIRST_NAME" and "LAST_NAME" displayed whereas
in the csv exported with the UTL_FILE the complete address (street, housenumber, additions, zip, town, state ... ) is written, these things are needed e.g. the form letters.
You do not need another page, just an additional button named e.g. "export_to_csv" on your report page.
The csv export itself is handled from a plsql procedure "stored procedure" ( I like to have business logic outside of apex) which is invoked by pressing the button "export_to_csv". Of course the stored procedure can handle also parameters
An example code would be something like
