Cropping photos at an angle within InDesign?

Is this possible?
I have a bunch of product shots. I want to bring them into InDesign, rotate them until I like the angle, and then crop them (mask out the background) to fit inside a squared-up rectangle border.
I know I can do this all individually in Photoshop but it's better to do this while I am designing the layout. I don't want to have to keep going back into PS to tweak the angles.
I tried to do it with Pathfinder but it kept saying there was nothing there to mask.
Using CS4.

As said already, use the White Selection tool to select the graphic
Then Rotate the graphic.
Use the black arrow tool to resize the frame
There's 2 things going on here
1 your graphic sits inside a frame
2 your graphic and frame are independent of each other.
You can use the Black Arrow tool to move and reposition the frame on the page
You can use the White Arrow tool to move the graphic within the frame, in relation to position, size etc.

  • Cropped photos -import into iMovie, but reverts to original

Anyone have this problem? Cropped photos in iPhoto and iView look fine in their own habitat, but when I import them into iMovie, they revert back to their original uncropped photo - frustrating since these are photos eliminating the letterbox, so there are black lines on two sides, so the cropping within iMovie does not work.
    Thank you for any information!

Hi S. Katie - your problem with iPhoto is most likely because when you crop them in the iPhoto window you are not affecting the ORIGINAL photo, and it must be that original photo that iMovie recognises and imports.
So long as they are of good quality, you should be able to use the Ken Burns zoom function to 'crop' them even after they are already in your project.
To batch alter the duration of your stills, firstly select them, then make the adjustment in the Photos Pane and click 'Update'. Note, though, that transitions must be re-rendered (a note to that effect will appear on the screen).

  • Using external editor PSE to crop photos for iPhoto

For years I have used PSE (Photoshop Elements) as the external editor in iPhoto (iPhoto 8 - 7.1.5).  Recently I upgraded to a new machine which has iPhoto 11 (9.4.2) installed.  I decided (amongst other things) to crop a photo in PSE using the "No Restriction" option.  When this photo was re-opened in iPhoto, iPhoto rendered it as a "stretched" photo - like it was trying to force it to the original photo ratio.  Obviously all the dimensions looked weird in this "stretched" photo! As an experiment I reverted the cropped photo to "Original" and then performed the exact same crop within iPhoto itself.  No problem. The photo was rendered exactly as you'd expect.  So why does the new iPhoto not seem to handle externally cropped photos properly?  Is there a solution? (other than forking out another 50 quid for the latest version of PSE - which may or may not have the same issue!)
Yes I'm using an old version pf PSE (6 in fact) but everything else (at least everything else that I've tried!) seems to work OK.
    Thoughts anyone?

I may be preaching to the choir here but there may be some PSE tips here that might help, particularly regarding PSE's preferences:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Using new LR5 healing Spot tool on a cropped photo

    Hi all,
I haven't seen much mention of this, but it drives me nuts -- wondering if I'm alone...
When I use the LR5 healing Spot tool on an already-cropped photo, it often picks a healing spot from outside the croped region.
That's fine, but there is no simple way to then adjust it -- it seems I have to: 1) copy the crop, 2) reset the crop, 3) make the adjustment, and 4) paste the crop.
It seems there needs to be a way to "view the full canvas" from within the Spot too (I'd also like to be able to "view the full canvas" from within the new straigten crop tool).

    Hello
You can us the '/' key to force a resample and if you are lucky it will bring the sample area into view.

  • I have photos that are rotated within a photo stream created from a project even though the photo displays properly within the project. How can I get the photos to have the proper rotation within the photo stream?

I have a photo stream that was created from a subset of photo from a rather large Aperature project. Some of the photos show up rotated within the photo stream but are not rotated within the project. Why is this happening and how do I fix the rotation within the photo stream? I do have the latest version of Aperature and have all of the necessary updates applied to my devices used to view the photo stream. The photos do show up rotated within the photo stream segment of Aperature, so I am sure it is not an issue with the output device (iPad and Apple TV). I do know that I cannot edit photos within a photo stream, but no amount of editing within the project allows the photos to be properly rotated within the photo stream. All help would be greatly appreciated.

That will work, but it is the long way 'round.
As Frank noted, Book Albums are just specialized Albums.  Albums can show any Image in your Library, regardless of where the Album is located on the Library Inspector, and regardless of which Project contains the Image.  You can put your Albums anywhere (in a Folder called "Books" for example).  You can put Images from anywhere in your Library in any Album.
    The easy way 'round:
    - Make a new Book Album
    - Select Images you may want to put in your Book.  Flag them.
    - Select some more.  Flag them.
    - Go to the "Flagged" container (listed near the top of the Library Inspector), select all, and drag-and-drop them to your Book Album.
    - Repeat as needed, or just drag-and-drop directly into the Book Album.
Note that you can remove any Image from any Album (including Books) by selecting and hitting the "{Delete}" key.  This _does not remove the Image from the Project that contains it, or from the Library.
Note, too, that once the Images are in your Book Album, you then put them in the Book you are creating for publication.  The Book Album contains the superset of Images with which you populate the Book itself.  The Book Album also holds the Book.
A good (imho ) introduction to the parts of Aperture can be found in this short guide I wrote.
The User Manual is helpful.  Here is
    the chapter on making Books.
    From that chapter, here is
the section detailing how to create and populate a Book Album.

  • Finder within InDesign CS6 cannot find files

When I use the finder within InDesign CS6 to search for images or InDesign files it won't find the files. This is especially challenging when I am trying to re-link images. (When I search outside of InDesign, I find them, no problem.) I'm running Mac OS 10.7.4. Any suggestions?

My question was not well worded, but I didn't know what other way to put it. Thanks for your help. Yes, I can browse to the images, but I'm trying to avoid that by doing a search for the file name in the search field. The search field won't let me find InDesign files either. I've included a screen shot of the dialog box to explain.

  • I am having issues with Sidebar files not appearing from within InDesign CS5.5. They show up fine from other Adobe applications. Using OS10.6.8.

I am having issues with Sidebar files not appearing from within InDesign CS5.5. They show up fine from other Adobe applications. Using OS10.6.8.

I would first of all trash the preference file for InDesign, make sure the application is closed then find the prefs in
/Users/USER NAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign and just throw the entire folder away, it will generate a new one after you launch InDesign again.
Now launch InDesign and see if the problems are resolved.
If not I would repair your permissions on your hard drive wih disk utility, and if that fails then di-install InDesign and re-install that single application.
Let me know if any of these suggestions work for you
I will be checking my email although you might have to wait for a response as I will be taking a microlight flight over the Victoria Falls tomorrow. Yay can hardly wait.

  • After upgrading to ios5.1 photo app crashes when trying to edit "cropping"photos. I've shut it down and also tried a reboot.

Does anyone else experience this problem?
When I try to edit photos in the photo app and in the camera app
I try to crop them and the system will randomly crash.  Giving me
either a circle ticking logo on a black screen or the system will
reboot completely with a black screen, Apple logo, and then
    back to the lock screen.

I have a PC running Windows Vista so what I had to do was in iTunes make sure that all my photos were SYNC'd with my pictures directory. After that when I was sure that I had all the photos that were on my iPhone in my windows pictures directories then I deleted all my pictures off of my iPhone.  In order to do this once you plug your iPhone into your computer via the 30 pin dock connector cable, and after the computer recognizes your iPhone, a window will pop up in Windows that shows your device.  iOs will allow you to open up a file folder that contains your photos.
Note: there may be several file folders depending on the library size of your pictures and if you have photo stream enabled.  In my case I had four folders and these folders or a combination of numbers and letters. These folder names are randomly generated through iOS but just be aware that these folders contain your photos and videos. I know that one folder was just my photo stream because I did not have very many pictures, and two folders had my entire photo library and camera roll in them and another folder had just my videos in it.
The process is pretty simple: once I open these folders, I highlighted all my pictures and deleted them. Once they were deleted off the phone then I went into the iTunes "summary" page for my iPhone.  I then went to the "photos" tab and I made sure that the box was checked to sync my photos. In my case I don't have my entire photo library on my phone so I have selected folders button checked.  Then I just SYNC'd my phone again. It didn't take too long for iTunes to transfer all my photos back to my phone. After this process was complete I checked all my photos and tried to crop them and had no problems. I also did some screen captures on my phone by pressing the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time. Again I tried to crop photos and had no problem.
So what I believe with the expert advice from Adam Christiansen of the Mac cast podcast was that I had a corrupt photo file or corrupt metadata from a photo file. So what this was doing was causing a system crash and reboot in iOS. I was able to verify this in my diagnostic files on my iPhone in the settings / general / about / diagnostics and usage / diagnostics and usage data TABS.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AS IT ALLEVIATED MY PROBLEM.  I HAVEN'T HAD ANYMORE PROBLEMS WITH THIS ISSUE AND WHAT I'VE DESCRIBED ABOVE IS A WAY TO DO IT WITHOUT RESTORING YOUR ENTIRE IPHONE. IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS AFTER DOING THIS THEN YOU HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM WHICH PROBABLY REQUIRES THAT YOU DO DO A COMPLETE RESTORE OF YOUR IPHONE. BUT BEFORE YOU DO THE RESTORE MAKE SURE THAT YOU BACKUP YOUR IPHONE AND I WOULD SUGGEST DOING THAT TO YOUR COMPUTER AND NOT TO ICLOUD; MY REASON FOR THIS IS THOUGH ICLOUD IS A WAY TO DO IT IT JUST TAKES MORE TIME TO RESTORE FROM A BACKUP VIA ICLOUD AS OPPOSED TO A TETHERED BACKUP VIA THE 30 PIN DOCK CONNECTOR CABLE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

  • Cropping Photos in iPhoto

I have a question about the cropping tool. I know that by clicking on the drop down Constraints menu when in edit menu I can change the constraints of the crop. It seems to me that those constraints are useful if you are actually going to print out the pictures. I rarely print my pictures. I mostly show them to people on the web, on my computer, etc. So, is it possible to crop the photo but keep the same constraints as the original photo? If not, what would be the best constraint to use if I just want use the cropped photo on my computer but not print it out?

There's no best constraint. If you want the picture to have the same aspect ratio as the screen, you should have a ##x## (Display) option in the Constrain pop-up menu.
To preserve the original aspect ratio of the image-there may be an easier way- you could enter the photo's dimensions (as seen in the info panel) into the Custom constrain box.

  • Set exported resolution for each image within InDesign

I'm generating a document in InDesign destined only for the screen (as a PDF) and I'm wondering whether in CS6 the user can set the exported resolution separately for each image. i.e click on a image and set the resolution for that image. Reason: to allow end-viewers to zoom in on certain images and retain quality.
And while I'm on the subject of changing resolution, a few years ago someone wrote a script for me (in response to a post), that when you clicked on an image within InDesign, resampled the original to 300 dpi, saved it, and made the necessary adjustments in InDesign so the image stayed the same size.
Can CS6 do that? Or do I need to dig up the old script?

    > ... destined only for the screen (as a PDF) ...
The developers of PDF will thank you for that statement!

  • Problem uploading enhanced and crop photos

When I upload enhanced and crop photos from my iPad2 to Dropbox the original photo gets uploaded.
I am using the native iPad photo app on my iPad2 to enhance and crop  I see that there are others with similar problems but no real solution. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is Apple issue. Seems I have wasted a lot of time enhancing photo but can't share them.  Very annoying!!!
    Any ideas? Need Help ASAP.
    Thanks

Disregard lasts - I see the issue now having played around a little.  Do your crop, email it to yourself, click on the checkout arrow at top of email screen and hit save image.  Image is saved back to photoroll in cropped state.  The original cropped image appears in photoroll.  Click it, select image and then edit and revert.  It will go back back - but the saved photo from email stays as it is..
You can now upload the saved image to dropbox.  Hope this resolves your issue, Regards, Ct

  • Lumia 1020 wont crop photos

My 1020 looses picture quality when I crop the photos.  Its like im zooming in on a very low resolution photo. Everything goes pixilated and blurry.  The cropped photos cannot be used. One of the biggest selling points of the phone cannot be used. I can zoom in on the photo and the pro image with no loss of picture quality its only when I crop a photo I have problems. Phone running 8.1 and I think this could be the problem as I only noticed the issue a week or two after the upgrade.  I have sent it in for repair and they said the phone was fully reset and the software reloaded.  Issue still there !!!!

Not a problem for me. Two possibilities:
    (1) Whenever you view photos in ANY Lumia phone, you see a reduced quality version intended for display on the phone screen, this saves system resources. Check if the same is the case when you view the same photos in your PC.
    (2) If you crop a tiny part if the image so that the new image is quite a bit less in size than the phones screen resolution (1024x768), then when it is viewed on the phone it will be expanded to fill the screen and will therefore appear pixelated.

  • Changing images to 300dpi within indesign

    Hi again only me, lol
Within Illustrator have an action set up so i can automatically change the resolution of an image to 300dpi with one click.
I know Indesign doesnt use actions but is there away of simply setting a script to action this very time saving exercise?
    Andy

You don't need to do this.
    Make a PDF
Go to File>Export and in the Compression section of the dialog box there is the option to Downsample All Images to 300 ppi that are above 450.
    However:
There are scripts to resize images to do this http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&extid=1833529
    (Window>Automation> Scripts) CS5 it's Under (Window>Utilities>Scripts)
    Installing scripts
    http://indesignsecrets.com/how-to-install-scripts-in-indesign.php
Why do you want to change all the images to 300 ppi ? There's no need.
There are two things to look for in the Window>Info Panel
When you place an image check teh Info Panel
It will have actual and effective PPI
Actual will show you the ppi that is resident in the file.
Effective will show you the PPI in relation to how it was scaled within InDesign
As long as Effective PPI is 300 ppi or higher then all is fine.
Generally there is no need to go to open all your images and save them as 300 ppi
Just use them as they are - even if they are "effectively" over 300 ppi it won't matter.
When you make the PDF for print you can downsample the images there - reducing the size of the PDF.

  • Aligning numerals and numerals in brackets within InDesign CS5 table

Hi there... I have a curly question that I have nearly cracked but it is still eluding me just slightly.
A project I am working on (Annual Report) within InDesign CS5 (Mac) contains a lot of tables with numbers listed in the financial section, as you'd expect.
I want to align all the list of numbers so that if one cell (within the table) has a series of numbers and then the next cell has another set of numbers but this time it is bracketed, that the last numeral without brackets will align with the last numeral within the brackets.
So essentially you would look at the list and the numerals will align up and down, bracketed or not...
I have been able to work this out outside of tables and within a table that is a set column width but my issues start when this style is applied to a column width that varies from the origin one where the style was created... unfortunately the columns throughout the financial section will vary in size and I can't keep making different individual styles for each varying column...
I hope someone out there has had a similar experience and can provide an answer to this what would seem fairly simple issue.
    Thanks in advance.

Would it be too much work to highlight each column:
    Align Left
    Using Tabs:
      Use Align to Decimal
      Change Decimal to ]
       Center this tab in Column
