Cropping photos in Illustrator

Hello
Is it possible to crop photos in illustrator without moving into photoshop?
Thanks

After placing the image, draw a rectangle over the desired portion of the image, then select both and make a clipping mask. With clipping mask, a portion of the image is made visible and the rest is hidden. But if you really want to get rid of the hidden portion of the image, here's a trick.
- Place the clipped image in a blank area of the document.
- From the Transparency panel, apply a blending mode to it - say Multiply. As there is nothing beneath, no change in appearance would happen.
- Now use Object > Flatten Transparency on the image. Remember to choose the right ppi for the raster.
And here you go, hidden portions of the image get removed. But remember this is a trick.

  • How do I crop a photo in Illustrator?

I can't believe I can't figure this out. (I came over from Freehand, and it was simple).
All I want to do is:
    1) Crop a placed photo within Illustrator
    2) Create a border around it.
I can't seem to find the answer in any help file. Is it so simple in Illustrator that they don't explain how to do it? I don't want to create crop marks for the entire image, just crop off part of a photo without going back into Photoshop. How?
    Thanks very much.

If you want to totally eliminate content outside a mask in Illustrator (giving you a true crop), you can use the following method:
Select the path that you would have used for the clipping mask and, instead of making a mask, fill it with, oh, say, white. Then, set the opacity for that masking object to 0% using the transparency palette/panel. Then, with that object and the underlying raster image selected, flatten transparency. (Use 100% vector on the quality slider and make sure the 'Preserve alpha channel' option is unchecked.) Ungroup the result.
You should now be able to independently select the various portions (inside and outside the mask) and discard those you don't need. The links palette/panel will show you what's going on.
You can use this method with multiple clipping masks in a single operation. You don't even have to initially embed the underlying image for this to work.

  • How do I place a photo in Illustrator from my iPhoto Library?

I am a graphic designer and I use Illustrator and Photoshop a lot. I don't use iPhoto for most of my photo editing but rather for the organizing it does with my photos in regard to me viewing them.
Since updating to iPhoto 08 the other day I am unable to get into my photos folder and place a photo in Illustrator or open a photo from Photoshop. (I have now figured out how to use Photoshop to edit...so that is not my real issue) Because of this new design to keep people out of the folder so they don't corrupt them, it also seems to keep me out from even placing a photo.
Other than physically making a copy of it and placing it into another folder how can I access these photos? I have tried dragging and dropping the photo from iPhoto to my Illustrator page, I get this message +"QuickTime™ and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture."+
I can do a work around for Photoshop but what about Illustrator? Why can I not just place my photo?
I am sorry if this question is redundant to others being asked in regards to the "no easy access" to the main iPhoto Library but I didn't see any questions specifically asking about Illustrator.
    Thanks.

    Two things
1- When you go to Leopard the access is very easy and more direct
2 - for me I love the fact that I do NOT have to worry about having the latest version of the photo like I used to - now I export the photo (at worst - under Leopard I normally directly access the latest version) and know that it is the current version rather than looking at the original folder and the modified folder trying to remember the photo name (which makes exporting, using and deleting my preferred work flow under Tiger)

  • After upgrading to ios5.1 photo app crashes when trying to edit "cropping"photos. I've shut it down and also tried a reboot.

Does anyone else experience this problem?
When I try to edit photos in the photo app and in the camera app
I try to crop them and the system will randomly crash.  Giving me
either a circle ticking logo on a black screen or the system will
reboot completely with a black screen, Apple logo, and then
    back to the lock screen.

I have a PC running Windows Vista so what I had to do was in iTunes make sure that all my photos were SYNC'd with my pictures directory. After that when I was sure that I had all the photos that were on my iPhone in my windows pictures directories then I deleted all my pictures off of my iPhone.  In order to do this once you plug your iPhone into your computer via the 30 pin dock connector cable, and after the computer recognizes your iPhone, a window will pop up in Windows that shows your device.  iOs will allow you to open up a file folder that contains your photos.
Note: there may be several file folders depending on the library size of your pictures and if you have photo stream enabled.  In my case I had four folders and these folders or a combination of numbers and letters. These folder names are randomly generated through iOS but just be aware that these folders contain your photos and videos. I know that one folder was just my photo stream because I did not have very many pictures, and two folders had my entire photo library and camera roll in them and another folder had just my videos in it.
The process is pretty simple: once I open these folders, I highlighted all my pictures and deleted them. Once they were deleted off the phone then I went into the iTunes "summary" page for my iPhone.  I then went to the "photos" tab and I made sure that the box was checked to sync my photos. In my case I don't have my entire photo library on my phone so I have selected folders button checked.  Then I just SYNC'd my phone again. It didn't take too long for iTunes to transfer all my photos back to my phone. After this process was complete I checked all my photos and tried to crop them and had no problems. I also did some screen captures on my phone by pressing the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time. Again I tried to crop photos and had no problem.
So what I believe with the expert advice from Adam Christiansen of the Mac cast podcast was that I had a corrupt photo file or corrupt metadata from a photo file. So what this was doing was causing a system crash and reboot in iOS. I was able to verify this in my diagnostic files on my iPhone in the settings / general / about / diagnostics and usage / diagnostics and usage data TABS.
I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AS IT ALLEVIATED MY PROBLEM.  I HAVEN'T HAD ANYMORE PROBLEMS WITH THIS ISSUE AND WHAT I'VE DESCRIBED ABOVE IS A WAY TO DO IT WITHOUT RESTORING YOUR ENTIRE IPHONE. IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS AFTER DOING THIS THEN YOU HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM WHICH PROBABLY REQUIRES THAT YOU DO DO A COMPLETE RESTORE OF YOUR IPHONE. BUT BEFORE YOU DO THE RESTORE MAKE SURE THAT YOU BACKUP YOUR IPHONE AND I WOULD SUGGEST DOING THAT TO YOUR COMPUTER AND NOT TO ICLOUD; MY REASON FOR THIS IS THOUGH ICLOUD IS A WAY TO DO IT IT JUST TAKES MORE TIME TO RESTORE FROM A BACKUP VIA ICLOUD AS OPPOSED TO A TETHERED BACKUP VIA THE 30 PIN DOCK CONNECTOR CABLE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

  • Cropping Photos in iPhoto

I have a question about the cropping tool. I know that by clicking on the drop down Constraints menu when in edit menu I can change the constraints of the crop. It seems to me that those constraints are useful if you are actually going to print out the pictures. I rarely print my pictures. I mostly show them to people on the web, on my computer, etc. So, is it possible to crop the photo but keep the same constraints as the original photo? If not, what would be the best constraint to use if I just want use the cropped photo on my computer but not print it out?

There's no best constraint. If you want the picture to have the same aspect ratio as the screen, you should have a ##x## (Display) option in the Constrain pop-up menu.
To preserve the original aspect ratio of the image-there may be an easier way- you could enter the photo's dimensions (as seen in the info panel) into the Custom constrain box.

  • Problem uploading enhanced and crop photos

When I upload enhanced and crop photos from my iPad2 to Dropbox the original photo gets uploaded.
I am using the native iPad photo app on my iPad2 to enhance and crop  I see that there are others with similar problems but no real solution. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is Apple issue. Seems I have wasted a lot of time enhancing photo but can't share them.  Very annoying!!!
    Any ideas? Need Help ASAP.
    Thanks

Disregard lasts - I see the issue now having played around a little.  Do your crop, email it to yourself, click on the checkout arrow at top of email screen and hit save image.  Image is saved back to photoroll in cropped state.  The original cropped image appears in photoroll.  Click it, select image and then edit and revert.  It will go back back - but the saved photo from email stays as it is..
You can now upload the saved image to dropbox.  Hope this resolves your issue, Regards, Ct

  • Lumia 1020 wont crop photos

My 1020 looses picture quality when I crop the photos.  Its like im zooming in on a very low resolution photo. Everything goes pixilated and blurry.  The cropped photos cannot be used. One of the biggest selling points of the phone cannot be used. I can zoom in on the photo and the pro image with no loss of picture quality its only when I crop a photo I have problems. Phone running 8.1 and I think this could be the problem as I only noticed the issue a week or two after the upgrade.  I have sent it in for repair and they said the phone was fully reset and the software reloaded.  Issue still there !!!!

Not a problem for me. Two possibilities:
    (1) Whenever you view photos in ANY Lumia phone, you see a reduced quality version intended for display on the phone screen, this saves system resources. Check if the same is the case when you view the same photos in your PC.
    (2) If you crop a tiny part if the image so that the new image is quite a bit less in size than the phones screen resolution (1024x768), then when it is viewed on the phone it will be expanded to fill the screen and will therefore appear pixelated.

  • How do you crop photos?

I have iPhoto version 2. I have printed the instructions in iPhoto Help for cropping photos, but I seem to need more help. Following the 4 steps in the iPhoto Help section, I seem to have isolated the part of the photo that I want to print and e-mail, but what comes next? Now that I have used the Edit button, and the crosshair pointer, and the Crop icon in the Edit pane, what do I do now? I want that part of the photo that I have identified. How do I get it?
iMac DV (Special Edition) Mac OS X (10.3.9)

With the photo viewed in edit mode you draw a
rectangle with the mouse around the part you want to
keep. Then you select crop. Your cropped photo will
then appear in the edit window.A full size photo of
    the area your selected.
    That's it.
Well, while I was waiting for an answer, I finally fumbled, bumbled, and stumbled to a successful conclusion--I hope (I won't know until my friend acknowledges receipt of the picture.
I have to say that in my case it wasn't a matter of "That's it". My first problem was getting the cropped photo by itself. I think that my problem here was that there were just too many EDIT buttons on my screen. I must have used the wrong one the first time I tried. After that there were problems at EVERY step. Also, even though I finally e-mailed the message, I couldn't quite cope with the ENHANCE and CONTRAST buttons. The problem was they seemed to be one-way streets. I mean that after discovering that I had gone too far and that I didn't like the results, I couldn't reverse things. "Undo ENHANCE" didn't do it, nor did another similarly named button. Finally, I found another button that did the trick. I hope that the ENHANCE, BRIGHTEN, CONTRAST, etc. features have been simplified and improved in future versions. I'll soon know when I buy my next Mac. Thanks for your help.

  • Question about Aperture behavior on cropped photos

    Hello everyone,
If I crop a photo in Aperture 3, and then click on the "Auto level" button, will the "auto level" stuff be applied relatively to the whole photo or only to the cropped photo (just like in Photoshop) ?...

That's not really how I'd want it to work. If you had some portion of a picture you were cropping out precisely because it was, say, so bright white and washed out, and then wanted the rest of the picture to be auto-balanced based on the more appropriate range of shades and colors, you'd want it to be ignoring the part you cropped away. I haven't had a chance to play with that exact scenario though, but if what you say is true, what is the solution to a scenario like that? Round-trip it to PS to really crop away the unwanted part?

  • IPhoto 2 Cropping Photo

I used the help feature on how to crop a photo. I loaded a photo from DVD, selected edit and cropped it. But when I dragged the cropped photo to my desktop so I could upload it more quickly, the photo that shows on my desktop is the original photo, uncropped, which isn't the photo I want to upload. How can I only use the cropped photo I want?
    TIA!

the photo that shows on my desktop is the original photo
Have you actually opened that file to look at it, or are you making an assessment based on the thumbnail image of the file?
I just cropped a photo and exported it to the desktop like you described, then opened the file in Preview. The actual image was cropped just as intended.

  • Slideshow crop photos problem when i close the thumbnail botton

In the slideshow i use thumbnail photo "turned on" to change the pictures (is it the only way to do it?)  and manage them with crop function but when i later close thumbnail (i don't want visible) photos resize. Any suggestion ?

I have not a link yet, i'm preparing the graphic layout at the time. I bypassed the problem importing in muse the right photos size without use crop. Maybe i should see better edit photo functions tutorials. I'm new with Muse.

  • Is it possible to crop photos of art that are unusual shape..ie pentagon, quadrilateral

is iti possible to crop photos of art that maybe unusal shapes...quadrilateral, pentagon etc

    Not with iPhoto, no.
You could try with an external editor or an app that can apply masking overlays - even Pages, for instance.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • PSE8 - Help with Watermarking vs Cropped Photos

I have recently been experimenting with Watermarking, using the "Process Multiple Files" option.  It works great, except for one thing:  when watermarking a photo that has been cropped from its original size, the watermark gets cropped as well. Please see this link for an example of what I mean.
The cropped photos have been saved as separate files from the original, so why is this happening?
Can anyone tell me, a: how to fix it, b: how to keep it from happening in the future, and/or c:, what am I doing wrong???  Please?
    Thanks in advance!
