Cropping reduces file to 3 pixels

I have CS4 and have been unable to use the crop tool occasionally these past couple of weeks. I double-click to crop and it reduces my entire file to 3 pixels! Also, I'm not able to finesse the airbrush anymore.

Check the options bar for the crop tool -- you forgot about some settings you entered (like fixed size and resolution).

  • Crop jpg file to specific pixel size?

I know how to crop images but want to be able to view the resulting pixel measurements (ie, 1600 c 1200 pixels). I appreciate any help! Many thanks.

I have PSEv.8. I can right click on the rulers, select "pixels" in the menu.
Now the readout on the rulers is in pixels, and the readout at the bottom of the picture as well.
Does that do it for you?

  • Reduce FILE size, but not IMAGE size

pardon the blasphemy, but on windows, Paint lets you "stretch" an image to 99%, which reduces the size of the image practically not at all but reduces the file size big time, you know like a 600kb file reduced to 99% the size of the originals ends up at 60kb, or whatever, but is only a few pixels smaller in size. How would i do that on my mac? tried the export thing, but if you reduce size a few pixels, you get bigger file size... know what i'm asking?

I discovered Edit>Constrain>Custom>Crop>Export (give it a size in pixels). Reduces size and file size.

  • Reduce file size w/o blurring up my images?

I have a Pages (iWork '09) document with a lot of images (screenshots) in it. Many of these are large shots where I've used the mask option to hide what I don't need. The file is pretty large, even when I export it to PDF. Using the Reduce File Size option turns my screenshots into a blurry mess. Is there are way to get rid of the cropped areas w/o mucking with the image resolutions? Most of the pics were screenshots from Evernote dropped into the Pages file.
Short of that, will exporting to PDF and using Adobe Acrobat Pro's file optimization do the trick w/o blurring things up too badly?

Thanks for that. I was hoping I had independent control of cropping. I'll just have to do the cropping manually and rely on masking for trimming out little bits of things. I'm coming to Pages after years with Word, which allows more control when it comes to dumbing down images. I really like composing things in Pages. Now I just have to learn the best ways to get quality output w/o huge file sizes.
    Thanks,
    Wheat

  • Reduce File Size doesn't work!

When I click the (new) option 'Reduce File Size' in Keynote '09 the app prompts a estimated new size which is smaller than the current size. When I click on 'Reduce' the app doesn't do anything except for showing an error report which tells me something like: "..the file size was not reduced", for all of the files included. They are just regular .jpg/.png and .psd files. Did anyone else notice this bug..?

I'd say if it is a very large file with multiple large images, it might not be actually freezing, just taking its sweet time.
It's why I leave Activity Monitor running when I use iWork applications.
This way, I know ifd the app is dead or if it's heavily busy.
Either that or it has nothing to do. It trims and reduces the resolution of bitmap images to 72dpi. There will be a fair bit of work if you have transparency in the document.
It doesn't do a very good job IMHO and to reduce the file by 90% is a big ask.
The 'Reduce FileSize' feature isn't linked to the 'export to PDF' feature.
As explained, before applying "Reduce file size" it's good practice to "Reduce Image File Size".
This will drop the parts of the pictures which aren't displayed.
The asked task doesn't imply a reduction of the pictures by 90%.
As I already wrote several times, it's more efficient to crop images to the really used area *_before inserting them in a Pages document_*.
A Pages document is huge by nature because the Index.xml file describing its contents is highly verbose.
If the document was saved with the 'embed Preview.pdf' feature active, the size of this PDF is adding a lot of used space.
I'd print to pdf and reduce the quality in Acrobat Pro.
Most of us don't own Acrobat Pro.
I feel that it would be a bit silly to buy an application whose price is : 450$ as a complement for a 80$ set of applications.
    Before doing that, I would
    (a) crop pictures before inserting them
    (b) try to enhance Pages behaviour for free installing enhanced PDF filters.

  • Reducing file size #1...what exactly does file, reduce file size do?

Questions on reducing a pages to pdf file size…I will post each question seperatly.
    1) I was surprised to see page reduce file size take it from 50 megs to 20 megs…when I looked at a large jpeg file, its size went form 230k to 70k, but the entire image (not just the visible part after the mask) was there (I was hoping it would crop to the mask).
I am curious, what exactly is reduce file size doing?
Is it applying a quartz filter that I can control through colorsync (I think not)?
    Thanks, bob

You will need to test the results, but I suspect it is definitely lowering the resoltion to either screen resolution (72dpi) or double (150dpi) and upping the compression of the .jpegs.
In contrast to the Quartz filters, the results from file reduction in Pages is disappointing with a hefty loss of quality for not so much file reduction.
I would work with known distiller settings in Acrobat Pro for a better result.

  • Btach reduce file size within iPhoto interface

    Fellow iPhotorers
Is it possible to bulk or batch reduce file size within iPhoto - i.e. without having to export then re-import the pics THEN delete the originals?
For example - if I have shot a bunch of pics at high res which I decide or worth keeping as small (low KB) jpegs and not 3MB camera originals.
    Cheers
    Russell

    Russell:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Depends on what you mean by resize. Do you want to reduce the pixel dimensions, say from 2272 1704 to 800 x 600 keeping the same ratio of dimensions, and, thus, reduce the file size? Or do you want to keep the original pixel dimensions and reduce the file size, which requires a reduction in quality thru greater compression?

  • Undo reduce file size

Worked up documents on Pages with multiple photos, some at high resolutions. Reduced file size for emailing and sending to dropbox and now want to print in an 18" x 24" size. Sample print is very blurrry How do I undo reduce file size? Would exporting file via pdf (best file quality) help? Any other suggestions. Much aprreciated.

    Hi Trudy,
Reducing file size works by reducing the file size of any high resolution images to 72 dpi, OK for on screen use, but quite pixelated if printed or enlarged. Here's an example:
Here's the original—This is a detail, enlarged to 400% on the screen, but reduced by the discussions software to fit on this page. Note the spider web below the frog.
Here's the warning you get when you choose Reduce File Size:
Note that it says it "replaces" the original versions of the images. Scarey thought, but not as permanent as it appears.
    Here's the result:
The frog's snout is quite pixillated, and the web has almost disappeared, as has much of the texture of the frog's skin and of the rough-sawn cedar siding behind. Again, a 400% enlargement on the screen, with the reduction imposed by the discussions software.
If you act at this point, it is possible to undo the change—throwing out the edited image and replacing it with the original version. The option appears to remain available even after the document is Saved, but disappears when it has been Closed. That would make sense, as Saving both the reduced image and the full version would not result in a reduction in file size.
But there's one other factor: When you drop an image onto a placeholder in Pages, the image that is inserted is a COPY of the original image file. The editing referred to above is done with that copy, not with the original image file, which continues to exist, unchanged where it was before being inserted.
To get the hi-res version back, then is a matter of dropping the original file onto the placeholder again.
    Seems to work.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Reduce File Size causes images to be blurry

I created a document in Pages '09 that contains several masked images, resulting in a really large file size. I clicked Reduce File Size to get rid of the cropped parts of the images. Unfortunately, the images are now blurry. Any way to mask or crop a picture, or use Reduce File Size, without loss of image quality?

The images are being reduced to 72dpi with no sharpening that I can see and the excess image outside the masking shape doesn't seem to get trimmed. I suspect you then saved to a pdf with a lower quality setting which would have given a 2nd reduction in quality on top of the first.
So the best option is to take your images into Preview, crop them, reduce their resolution and sharpen them then bring them back into your Pages layout before exporting to pdf.

  • How to reduce file size when using batch processing?

I use File > Process Multiple Files to batch process photos to a smaller file size along with adding my watermark.  I've played with many different settings and no matter what I choose, I can't get my average file size to be less than about 200k.  However, when I've exported the same photos using iPhoto, I can get the file size to about half of that with no difference (to my naked eye at least) in quality.
I definitely want to keep the height at 768 pixels so that needs to stay constant.
My current settings in batch processing (average file size = 200 kb)
Resize images with a height constraint of 768 pixels at 150dpi
    What I've tried:
Resize at 72dpi (reduced file size by about 5kb)
convert file to JPEG low quality (reduced file size by about 10kb)
convert file to JPEG medium quality (not much difference in file size)
I'm using PSE 10 on a Mac running Lion.
Thank you in advance for your help!

You should go with default settings of Optimizer.
One difference between default settings of Optimizer and Reduce file size is that Optimizer does not guarantee a reduction in file size (if your Optimizer settings lead to an increase in file size, that's what you will get).
With Acrobat 9, the default setting in Optimizer has an additional setting which would not do an image optimization that results in increase of file size. In that sense it would in most cases give a smaller file.

  • Cropping .CR2 file

Hi, I'm new to CS6 and I'm having trouble cropping .CR2 files. Basically, I've just found out that I've been editing all of my RAW files as JPGs on CS5, which meant that I've been storing those huge files on my computer, but haven't been using them to their full potential. Now on CS6 I discovered Camera Raw, but I'm a bit confused as to how cropping a .CR2 file works on Camera Raw and on CS6.
If I open my .CR2 on Camera Raw, click 'Open Image' then use the Crop Tool, the image looks incredibly grainy (see below).
However, if I open on Camera Raw and crop it there before clicking 'Open Image', it looks fine (see below). Why is that?
    I'm using a 5184 x 3456 px, ISO 400, 43mm, 0 EV, f/5.6, 1/60 .CR2 file and cropping it to 714 x 516 px. The image doesn't look grainy on Preview.
Also, when I open the .CR2 file on Photoshop, the image looks really dull and lifeless compared to when I see it on iPhoto (see below). Is that because the RAW file is stripped of all settings to give me more flexibility when editing it? If so, is there a way to match the settings that I see on iPhoto?
I'm sorry if these are all silly questions, but I would really appreciate the help; I'm tired of having to manually brighten up photos that when I shot, looked good.
    Thanks
    Izzie

I'm struggling to find the Resolution field, which in CS5 was near the width and height fields when the crop tool was in use. Do you know how I change the resolution of an image on CS6?
Don't get hung up on the resolution in ppi or dpi.  You really want to concentrate on image size in pixels.  THe more you know the more you find you really don't know much. Here is an article on image size and resolution.  The one bad thing is the guy uses dpi (dots per inch) rather than ppi (pixels per inch) but it really does not make an difference in the message.  http://www.scantips.com/no72dpi.html

  • Reduce file size for posting

I am trying to upload some photos to eBay.  The original file size ris under 5Mb in Aperture but eBay claims it's too large at over 9Mb (the max apparently is 7Mb).
Rather than bang my head again the wall arguing I'd like to reduce the file size even more to say 2Mb in Aperture but have no idea how to do this.  Would changing the pixel vertical and horizontal count be an easier way?
I also have no idea how to do that despite searching Help yet again to no avail.  I tried reduce photos, reduce file size, reduce pixels... nothing relevant came up.
Sorry for being such a clutz but I never seem to get anthing from help but you guys always come up with the goods.

You can look at the exported files in the Finder to see the size the size and you can tell if it really is to big or if something else is going on.
So how did you export the images you tried to upload already? What settings did you use? There are a few different ways to control file size and which to use depends on how you plan on using the images.
Assuming you're exporting as JPG you can drop the quality slider down that will definitely bring the file size down but again without knowing how you exported how much over the file really is and how you plan on using them it's difficult to get more specific.

  • Reduce File Size Help

    Hi
Would any experts out there know how to adjust the default setting of "Reduce File Size" function? I thought it was linked to the default Colorsync "Reduce File Size" Quartz Filter but I found that changing that filter only effect Save As PDF functions.
I've been googling around without much luck.
    Thanks in advance.
    John

Peter is right. If you want to reduce the size of a PDF you can use ColorSync to create a PDF setting that reduces the quality (and thusly the file size) of the pictures in your document. In fact, Apple's already done this for us - Pages has 3 PDF export choices. But this has nothing to do with the file size of the Pages document itself. Your best bet is to use photo editing software to crop and resize the photo before you put it into the Pages document.

  • Reducing file size #2...Preview, Quartz Filter vs Adobe Pro Optimize

Questions on reducing a pages to pdf file…I will post each question seperatly.
    2) I read that you can reduce file size of a pdf in preview with a quartz filter. I created my own filer and it worked as expected. But, I also have Adobe Acrobat Pro, with save as PDF Optimized. The pro seems to have much more capability than the quartz filters.
Is one better that the other to use? The adobe optimize (standard settings) took it from 20 to 6 megs.
    THanks, Bob

The Adobe Acrobat settings you chose are probably using .jpeg to reduce the file size.
.jpegs are lossy. ie You lose detail and sharpness the more you compress the image.
The Quartz filters are usually of very high quality, but they are a black box and you need to understand what the settings are in each one. Quartz filters are extremely powerful, fast and as I said usually high quality but I suggest you experiment and see if they meet your needs.
