Cropping:  "Use Photo Ratio"

In Elements 5 there was the most excellent "Use Photo Ratio" feature when cropping.  In PS 5.5, is there a way to make that happen?  Can it be created as a "New Tool Preset"?  I find it very disappointing that it's not included in what's supposed to be the latest & greatest version.
Thanks

With Photoshop there are many ways to crop. Be carefull  with the crop tool  not only an you crop you can also resample and straighten.  You can also crop with the Rectangle marquee tool fillowed by image crop. You can also set the Rectangle Marquee tool to Fixed Ratio mode and set the aspect ratio. Croping and straighten can also be done in ACR with a selected aspect ratio. Ratios like 1:1, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 5:7 and  9:16 HDTV aspect ratio.  Photoshop has powerful automation and you can crop with both Actions and Scripts.
To crop manually using the documents current aspect ratio can be done quite easily. Use the shortcut Ctrl+A to select all the will give you a selection with the correct aspect ratio. Follow that with a menu Select>Transform Selection. Now I do not know how much You know about Transform.  There are modifyer keys that you can use with its bounding box. CTRL, Alt and Shift.  I write about two Shift and Alt. Shift will constrain any change in size to the selection to matain its current Aspect Ratio the Current Aspect Ratio. Hold the Shift down and drag in a cornor.  The Alt key cause the Transform to be from the center or from the point you moved the transform center indicator to. You can drag the point about.  Be sure also to hold down the Shift key at the same time you hold the Alt key to constrain the Transform aspect ratio. Be careful not to rotate the Transform for Image Crop does not support straighten and the crop will be to the bounds of the rotated selection. If you move the mouse cursor inside the selection not on the center indicator you can drag and reposition the selection. When you have the crop you want selected use menu Image>Crop.

  • Pixel Dimensions after Cropping with "Use Photo Ratio"

Why don't Pixel Dimensions (and Document Size) change for Image Size after cropping with "Use Photo Ratio" like it does after cropping with "No Restriction"? Using Photoshop Elements 10 and Crop Tool defaults.

Thank you all. I think I figured out how to crop using "Use Photo Ratio"
with Crop tool so that I can ensure that my photos are cropped only
proportionately and PSE 10 doesn't upsample pixels:
    1) Select Crop tool.
    2) Set "Use Photo Ratio" in Aspect Ratio setting in Options bar if not
    already set.
    3) Make crop selection as usual but don't complete (commit) crop.  Will
only be able to crop proportionately.
    4) When ready to complete crop, change Aspect Ratio setting to "No
Restriction" which blanks out width, height and resolution setting.
    5) Complete (commit) crop as usual.
Photo will be cropped proportionately, width and height will change
automatically to cropped size and pixels will not be upsampled avoiding
lose of detail, that is, PSE will behave as though No Restriction had been
specified from the outset. Blanking width and height before making crop
selection forces either Custom  or No Restriction setting which means that
PSE will let me make non-proportional crop.
PS. IMHO I think making "Use Photo Ratio" force upsampling is NOT a good
"design feature" when you are not warned about it and are not given a
choice to not make it upsample.

CS6 Camera Raw - I can now only crop using aspect ratio in the custom crop setting rather than being able to set the dims in cm and inches? anyone know how to revert? ever since installing new mac operating system things have been strange!

    Hi Kglad.
I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)
here is the new tutorial for CC -  my guess is they have scrapped the control we had over the custom crop settings

  • HT4505 can you scan 4x6 photos using Image Capture that will actually scan as a 4x6 photo. I have to crop the photo once it is scanned

Can you scan multiple 4x6 photos using image Capture that will actually scan as a 4x6 photo? I seem to have to crop each photo once it is scanned.

    How long is a string?
The answer depends on a large number of variables
Cropping removes the area cropped off so the pixel size of a cropped photos is smaller than an upcropped one
With iPhoto you can always revert ot the original so if the new quality is not enough for your use you can go back to the uncropped original
    size - many meanings
DPI - simple - Dots Per Inch - the number of dots (pixels) in a dimension divided by the number of inches of the display(print) - very simple math
Pixels and dots are the same for this discussion
so if a photo is shot in a 3:2 ratio (6x4 is also a 3:2 ratio) then the photo is the shape of a 4x6 photo with no cropping - is a photo shot in a 4:3 ratio is cropped to a 4:6 ratio (which is also a 3:2 ratio) then some information is going to be removed - assuming that you set the cropping frame as large as possible in one direction and only crop two sides then you lose the minimum amount of information
Most iPhoto uses of photos are designed aroung 4:3 photos so in general I would only recommend cropping 4:3 photos if you want to print them in standard print sizes
iPhoto slide shows will work best with 4:3 photos so cropping to 4:6 would be a mistake

  • Using the crop tool in Lightroom 5 I can only move and crop my photos from the top. Am I doing something wrong?

I am new to Lightroom 5 and find I cannot crop my photos as easily as I did in iPhoto. I would like to be able to drag them if I choose a custom size or crop them from the bottom as well as from the top but my two sided arrow disappears when I work at the bottom of the photo. Am I doing something wrong?

I would suggest you trash the prefs.
    Quit Lightroom
Launch Finder and find the user Library by clicking the Go menu whilst holding down the Optn (alt) key (n.b. the library is hidden until you press the optn key) and inside the Library folder select the preferences folder. Then trash the following file:
    com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist
    Then re-launch Lightroom
It’s then worth clearing each cache. Go to the top menu bar:
Lightroom >> Preferences >> File Handling (tab)
Click the Purge Cache button under Camera Raw Cache Settings; then click the Purge Cache button under Video Cache Settings. Finally click OK.

  • Iphoto not printing full photo, cropping some photos

After I create a photo with pixilmator or any horizontial and export to iphoto, I can see the full photo, but when i print it cuts off the edges and only prints the middle.  I have tried selecting different sizes, changing horizontial view to vertical view, nothing works.  I had to print and send a copy of a licence, similar to a car registration format, and that too had the ends cropped out.  Please help.  so far i have to print photos from the pixilatore program or and adobe program, no problems there, only have problems with iphoto.  using epson stylus nx420.  Please help

As noted in the other thread you posed this question in you must crop the photo to the print ratio and then print - iPhoto does not "autosize" photos - if you try to print a 8x12 photo on 8x10 paper you will lose 2 inches - you have to precrop the photo to the size you want to print

  • What Resolution To Crop For Photo Display On Widescreen TV?  Please Help

    Hello,
I'm having great difficulty trying to crop my photos for display on a widescreen TV.
The resolution of the TV is 1920x1080, and when I crop to those dimensions I get the black letterbox bars on top and bottom of the screen when I display my photos on the TV.
What specific XXXX x XXXX numbers should I use when I crop in order to display my photos from edge to edge on the TV without the black letterbox bars?
Also, could you please specify the proper ratio number to enter into Lightroom for the same purpose?  Apparently Lightroom requires a ratio number as opposed to pixel numbers in the dialog box.   When I enter 16 : 9, the resulting crops display the black letterbox bars when viewed on the TV.
I've searched the net and read many discussions about pixel aspect ratios and dimensions and square pixels, etc., and I am totally confused because I should be able to achieve my goal with a 16:9 ratio, but no matter what I do I end up with the letterbox bars when displaying my photos on the widescreen TV.
    Thanks very much in advance!

You'll need to describe just how you're getting those images onto the TV I think, for people to be able to answer this reasonably.
Is the TV plugged-in to the computer's video card?  Or are you making a video that you're displaying off a DVD or similar?

  • Using Photos to Create a Header

Currently have PE 5 and would like to know the easiest and quickest way to create a blog or web site header using only photos.
If there is a video, text or combo thereof that walks a person through this process, it would greatly appreciated.
    Scielement

Well, I don't know of a tutorial, but it's fairly straighforward:
    I just made this example:
I'm using PSE7, so my screen shots are a little different than PSE5
Pick your six photos and open them in the PSE Editor
Use the Crop tool to crop them to the right Aspect Ratio. Your example uses 10x8 (Set the Crop Tool Aspect Ratio to 8x10 and then click the little double arrows to get it to be Width 10in Height 8in)
Then, resize them all to 130 pixels Wide x 104 pixels High
Use Image>Resize>ImageSize... make sure Resample Images is checked, and then set the pixels (130Wx104H) in the Pixel Dimensions box.
Now, open the attached Banner.psd file [Note: This site won't let me upload a .psd, so I changed the extension to .txt.  After downloading it, change it back to .psd]
Drag each of your images into this file to create a new Layer for each image. (Use the Move Tool to drag and drop)
You can do this by simply having the two image windows side by side, and litterly dragging from the image window onto the banner.psd window.
Drag all six, and arrange them in the order you want. Positioning does not have to be exact, except for the one all the way on the left and the one all the way on the right.
You should now have the layer from the origional Banner.psd file, and six new layers.
Select all six of the new layers by holding the CRTL key down and clicking on each layer in the Layers pallette.
Then, select Align>Vertical Centers in the Tool Options Bar near the top of the window
The select Distribute>Horizontal Centers from up there as well.
Now, add an outside Stroke (black border) to each image
In the Effects pallete, select the Layer Styles filter, and then select Strokes from the pulldown.
Drag and drop the Black Stroke 0.5 Px onto each of your images.
Now, arrainge the layers so that you have one of the included Photo Filter layers on top of each of your photos by simply dragging the layers up and down to get them in the right order.
And, for the faded Color Left B&W Right effect, drag the Hue/Saturation layer up to the top.
You should end up with something like:
    Hue/Saturation 1
    Photo Filter 6
    Layer 6
    Photo Filter 5
    Layer 5
    Photo Filter 4
    Layer 4
    Photo Filter 3
    Layer 3
    Photo Filter 2
    Layer 2
    Photo Filter 1
    Layer 1
Where Layer 1 is that layer with your Photo 1, Layer 2 = your photo 2, and so on.
You can play around with the effect of each Photo Filter layer by double clicking on the little circle that's half black and half white.
Once you have it all as you'd like, save it for your web banner using File>Save for Web.
    There you go.
    Not too tough.
    Cheers
    Bob

  • Full page prints from iPhone but not from iPad using photo app with AirPrint ?

Full page prints from iPhone but not from iPad using photo app with AirPrint ? iPad only prints 4x6 on full size paper. It's an HP 8600.

I also have this problem printing photos from an iPad to an Epson WF-2540 printer. It prints only 4x6 and without border (so print starts at extreme top left corner of paper). Borderless printing is not selected on printer. Printing a square photo just crops to 4x6 size.

  • After I have cropped a photo how do I save it.  Something is wrong, my computer will not let me close photoshop

I cropped a photo and saved it as a TIFF.  I can not close down photo shop or burn the photo to a disk.  How do I save the photo once I crop it?

Use the menu option File>Save As. When you close photoshop, it should have asked you if you want to save the file. If photoshop does not ask you and refuses to close, odds are something else is wrong.
First try resetting the preferences. (ctrl-alt-shift for windows and cmd-opt-shift for mac as you start photoshop) If done right it will ask you if you want to reset the preferences.
Next thing to do is uninstalling then reinstalling photoshop.
If that still does not help, then it may be time to contact Adobe.

  • Using photos from iphoto in adobe photoshop elements

I'm new to the mac world. I do a lot of casual digital photography. I like to edit pictures and create things in photoshop elements.
I'm trying to make sure I'm opening photos from the correct folder in the iphoto library.
I think either using photos in the modified or original photos is the proper way? Any input.
Also, can I create new folders within the iphoto library (finder side) to better organize my photos? I had pictures broken down by month on my pc and iphoto seems to only group by year. It makes locating the proper picture in photoshop elements easier if the pictures are broken down by month.
I know I can use folders and albums within iphoto, but those catagories don't show up when trying to open photos in elements.
    Thanks for your input!

    debo213:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There ias a caveat to using PSE with iPhoto. It is: if you create a layered file or do edits that causes PSE to want to save as a .psd file you must either flatten the file and force PSE to save as a jpg or do a Save As to the Desktop and import the new file. Subsequent edits to that new psd file from within iPhoto like Terence pointed out can proceed normally.
Using 2 Image Editors in iPhoto
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and a 3rd party editor without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected the 3rd party editor as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". Then when you Control-click on an image, you can select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu to edit in your selected editor.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How can I automatically crop a photo based on its content (a black border)?

    I scanned hundred of negatives.
The scanner produced .jpg files.  Most of the scanned images show the negatives holder to one side as a black border.  The black border is thicker or thinner depending on the photo.
    Please see pictures attached.
Is there a way to automate the detection of such a border and remove it by cropping the photo?  Ideally I would like the processing to only remove the thickness that is required to keep the photo unaltered as much as possible.
I have Photoshop 12 and I know about Actions.  I just don't know how to tell the engine to only crop if it is required, and by how much.
This could save me days of manual work.  Thankyou.
    Environment Information:
    ·  I am running Photoshop 12.1 *64 bit
    ·  Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    ·  Amount of installed RAM: 6GB
    ·       Scanner:  Canon CanoScan 8800F
    ·  Amount of free disk space:
                C:\ - OS and Software disk - Total size:139GB showing 20GB free
                G:\ - Data disk - Total size:1.81 TB showing 437GB free
    ·  Make/Model of Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

Thank you miss marple for your Image>Canvas Size... suggestion.  I used it to implement a semi automated process.
I programmed a couple of actions:
    - one to trim all sides by 7 pixels
    - one to trim the top side by 7 pixles
Then I assigned a shortcut key to each action.
Since I have to open each photo individually anyway to remove larger scratches (see my other post), it is easy to hit a couple of keyboard keys to trigger the relevant 'border removal' action.
The main thing is that in 95% of cases I don't have to use the mouse to fix the borders, but I use keyboard keys only.  It is a real time saver.

  • In PSE11, how do I "crop" a photo into a circle?

I would greatly appreciate step-by-step instruction on how to "crop" a photo into a circle in PSE11.
I've created an invitation for my daughters 1st birthday and I want to add a circular photo of her on the invite, but I can't seem to figure it out.
I understand that I can't technically "crop" it but I need the image to appear to be circular by using the transparency feature.
    Again, I need a step-by-step as I'm still new to PSE11...
    Thank you!

I'm curious as to why reply#1 didn't work. That is basic PSE stuff. Was the selection still active with marching ants as asked in reply#3? Perhaps somehow the selection was deleted before doing the inverse.
If you do get that to work, note that you first must convert the picture to a "regular" layer by renaming it from "Background" to anything else. Then the deleted portion will be replaced by transparency. If you do the delete on the Background layer the deleted portion is simply replaced by the color defined in the background color chip on the toolbar.

  • I cropped a photo in iphoto. It is only cropped when you double click.

I cropped a photo in iphoto.  In events it is showing the original photo. When I double click on the photo then it shows me the cropped version. I would like to see only the cropped version and delete permanantly the original version or at least not have to look at it. Help please.

How did you crop this photo? The symptom are consistant with your using a third party program and modifying the photo within the iPhoto library - which you must never do.
in iPhoto there is no way to "delete the original" version - iPhoto is a DAM (Digital Asset Manager) and as such always maintains the original, the digital negative
