Cross Fade & Cross Dissolve

I understand the difference between a cross fade (for audio) and a cross dissolve (for video). If I have video and linked audio tracks, for example from captured video, with two clips that have ample handles, can a cross fade be applied to the audio at the same time a cross dissolve is applied to the video between the two clips? Or must they be applied separately?
For audio, the cross fade (+3dB) is the default; for video, cross dissolve is the default. It would seem logical to be able to apply the default audio AND default video transitions at the same time.
Thanks.

Thanks for the quick responses. I now see that it's possible.
P.S. I initially did a forum search on "transition" which didn't help. If I had done a search on "simultaneous transition", I would have found the other thread.

  • Cross dissolve problem - only works as fade in with graphics clips

I inserted three graphics clips with transitions (cross dissolve default) at the beginning of a sequence. The transitions only seem to work as fade-ins I have plenty of extra frames beyond the edit section of the clips. I tried to adjust the transitions in the transition editor - it shows the transition aligned to start at the edit, but won't allow mw to choose to center it on the edit or end on the edit.
Thanks for any help you can provide

Thank you - no, there seems to be a handle only on the left side of the edit (to the left of the transition - which sits only to the right of the edit). On the right side,(in the zone of hte transition) the cursor shows the symbol for the roll tool - r. Excuse my limited understanding of the interface and tools - I am just beginning to learn FCE.
I will be away from the workstation until tomorrow morning.

  • Weird Cross Dissolve From Video to Image Causes Video to Fade Left!!

    Hello.
Since the snippet of video was not long enough I had to extend time by creating a still frame. That part worked great. No issues.
However once I added the cross dissolve going from the video to the image and then again from the image ot the next video  snippet -- it fadically shifts the frame of the video going left as it fades.
At roughly 2:26 of this flv video. www.lockwoodarc.org/mwhittmore/LARC_Alaska.flv
Where you see the rear of the jeep and the tag line "Adios Alaska".
It's my first ever video edit so don't laugh.  It's the best I could do given all the garage I hd to work with.
Any other suggestions are appreciated too.
    Marc

What I do is extend my 2nd and 3rd track clips beyond the cut point, then disable the right side of the cut on tracks 2 and 3.
I then line up the dissolve across the three tracks. This works great, especially if I want to maintain the continuity of the disabled tracks for later use.
I use different methods depending on how much work I want to do, what I have available in front of me and any other effects at that particular point in time.

  • Cross Dissolve fades to black...I want it to be white.

Can anyone help me on this? I'm using Final Cut Express 3.5.1. I have my cross dissolve where I want it, but it fades to black, and I want it to fade to white. I have made the background white, but it still fades to black.
    Any help? Thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
If I understand correctly, you want a fade to white after the outgoing clip.
So put a MATTE generator set to white after the clip (on the same video track) with the cross dissolve.
    The keyboard shortcut is Shift-F9.

  • How does one create a video cross dissolve without an audio cross fade in FCP-X??

    Greetings:
This is a no brainer in 'legacy' Final Cut, but I am completely stumped in FCP-X. Situation is thus:
Main story line consists of a speaker. I would like to drop stills onto/into the storyline while the speaker continues uninterrupted. I've tried connecting to the storyline,  overwriting to the storyline, creating a secondary storyline, creating transitions with available media, with full overlap -- all for naught. The outgoing bits of the cross dissolve have a weird audio hiccup that I cannot get rid of. I simply want to fade a still in and fade it out (I appreciate I could keyframe opacity with a still connected to the main storyline, but that seems slightly nuts -- this should be a keystroke). I am assuming I'm missing something -- possibly something really simple, so, apologies for being a dolt, but I could really use a hand here.
    Many thanks
    longstrider

Detach the audio using Control-Click.  The audio will then have its own fade that you can adjust.  If you want to cross fade audio clips just overlap another audio clip by placing it below the first audio clip.  Overlap can be adjusted for the amount of time you want for a dissolve.  You can also pull the fade control in the vertical middle of the end of each audio clip to make an audio fade in/out.  Holding that fade control while pressing the Control key gives you the option to select different types of fade curves.  Hope this helps.

  • I have 5 layers of texts with a white background on the bottom(V1). I want to cross dissolve to black at the same time on all layers. However they all don't disappear at the same time. It seems the top layer fades out last, and so on.

I have 5 layers of texts with a white background on the bottom(V1). I want to cross dissolve to black at the same time on all layers. However they all don't disappear at the same time. It seems the top layer fades out last, and so on. These are 20 frame dissolves.

You can condense multiple clips that are stacked above each other into a nest. The nest appears as a single clip in the Timeline. If you need to modify the individual clips inside after you have created the nest, it can be expanded again by double clicking it.

  • Non-functioning cross-dissolves with FCP 5.1 on intel

I am having trouble with FCP 5.1 running on my macbook. My cross dissolves work when used between two clips but as a fade to black, it doesn't work, or rarely does. I have 8 hours to finish this project to be showed at a wedding reception tomorrow. I've tried trashing the prefs and it did nothing, i emptied all my render files, checked for updates and nothing makes a difference. Please help, I'm runnng out of time.
    Patrick

    Thanks for trying...
Very strange...and not discounting your proficiency with FCP.
When you place the dissolve end on edit, the dissolve shows up on the end of the clip? but then the clip never dissolves to black?
Yes, the dissolve will show up on the end of the clip, but it plays back as if it is not there. This happens whether it is rendered or not. If I use a cross dissolve between two clips, it plays back perfectly. 'Some' of the clips will dissolve to black but the majority play back as though the transition is not there.
Any chance you're working with a 'favorite' dissolve that may have it's begin/end parameters adjusted?
Tried that and went back and got the original transition and made sure everything was set how it should be. I thought for sure it owuld be the prefs, but no such luck.
Any chance you've got your video layers scrolled downwards and there's a clip on a lower track?
No, I have made sure there is only one track with nothing underneath.
Are any of these clips nested?
    Nope.
    Thanks for trying though.

  • Is there a better Cross Dissolve method and associated problem?

I have been using Cross Dissolve for some time now.  I have searched and reviewed cross dissolve help in the forum without so far finding better information or a solution.
    My method:
    - razor at the point to be dissolved
    - drag the Cross Dissolve to the razor point
    - click the dissolve to select the length required
    - razor each end of the dissolve length
    - right click each razored section with a ripple delete
    - reapply the cross dissolve and reselect the length
I find this works for me but could be simpler.  I ripple delete the razored sections because if I do not, the cross dissolves overlap previous sections prior and after the selected clips in the whole video sequence such that the effect appears not to work.  Ripple deleting ensures that the previous sections are within the selected clips.  There has to be a faster way.
    My problem:
This happens after many successful cross dissolves in a Project as though I have run out of allowable times it can be used.  When I try to ripple delete the razored sections, the ripple delete does not work no matter what I do.
What can I do better or correctly to cross dissolve and how can I deal with untimely failed ripple deletes?

I was not implying anything about your "experience" or otherwise although your method did actualy indicate a lack of editing experience..
It was you that asked for a more simpler, faster  way to do one of the most fundamental editing functions.  A cross dissolve.
I do not know how  or why you developed the method you described...
    My method:
    - razor at the point to be dissolved
    - drag the Cross Dissolve to the razor point
    - click the dissolve to select the length required
    - razor each end of the dissolve length
    - right click each razored section with a ripple delete
    - reapply the cross dissolve and reselect the length
but it certainly is unique ....if somewhat cumbersome and time consuming.
I only offered the advice that lead you to a "simpler , faster " way of doing a very simple function.
Your post number 4.  Yes you have misinterpreted that setting.
Stephen kind of unintentionally mislead you by using the term Pre and Post roll  when he should have said " handles". (ie edit the clip  knowing you have additional frames either end to create a fade from.

  • Transitioning effect not working properly (cross dissolve)

I had a clip and split it in two in FCP. I took the later half and imported to AE to make my effect. The plan was to import it back to FCP and add a cross dissolve between the two half-clips to make it look like the effect fades in. Makes sense, right?
Weeeell, the darn thing won't let me add an editable transition. I place the two perspective clips side by side (so they continued with each other), right clicked the part where they met and added the cross dissolve. It only added a one frame effect to the later (AE) clip. I've tried even going through the menus and doing the cross dissolve, but it still does the same thing. Is there something that I must have missed or something extra I'm not doing? All I want to do is have my two halves of a clips edited together with a dissolve. Can anyone help me?

Basically, a handle is media that extends beyond what exists in the timeline. You can use the search feature of this forum for hours of amusing and informative reading.
When you exported out of fcp to ae, you effective lost any possible handle, because you started at what you wanted to be the middle of the dissolve.

  • Cross Dissolve, Dip to Color not working

Hello. I am having trouble applying Cross Dissolve and Dip to Color to the transition between to separate clips. It works fine when I am transitioning between two clips originating from the same raw captured file (e.g. between two pieces I cut out of Raw 1), but I am unable to apply the transition to two clips from separate raw files (e.g. between a piece of Raw 1 and a piece of Raw 2).
The timeline only allows me to place the transition just AFTER the cut between the two clips, rather than straddling the two for a smooth fade. Any idea why this might be? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Enough handles?
    #1 Transitions "Insufficient Content"
    Shane's Stock Answer #1:
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.
a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

  • Intermittent problem with cross dissolve and chroma key

It seems that in 1 out of 10 videos I produce in Final Cut Pro there is a problem with the cross dissolve effect and chroma key. What happens is that during the cross dissolve, clip A fades out with a green tint and clip B fades in with a green tint.
Today I am working with two videos that I captured using the same work flow on the same day. One project exhibits the tint while the second project does not. If I import the problematic footage into the good project the tint problem follows the footage. In the good footage, the cross dissolve produces a result that does not have a green tint. If I re-capture the "bad" footage the results are the same.
Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have an idea how to resolve this problem?
    Thank you.
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

In my project, both clips are source clips with Chroma, Color Smoothing and Matte Choker applied. A dissolve from non-chroma clip to chroma clip works fine. Only problem is with two chroma clips. In my dissolve, the error appears as red fringing in the area between the two masks.< </div>
You're using creative shorthand that doesn't help. "Chroma clip" means the clip to which you have applied all of these effects? What masks? Where are you getting the masks?
To understand what's going on with all them itty bitty pixels in a stack of interactive effects, do me a favor: render out a short piece, say 10 seconds of each of your chromaclips as separate movies over transparency using the Animation codec. Reimport them and put them over a solid colored Dissolve between them using different types of dissolves. Post back and tell us (me) what's going on.
I still consider this to be a bug -- nesting adds more steps to the workflow than if this bug did not exist. < </div>
It's not a bug. Your pixels are running down a pathway. It's a question of building the correct pathway and having the correct pixel wranglers with the right kinds of cattle prods.

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve and Opacity

I've been noticing that Cross Dissolve has been acting goofey for awhile but have overcome any problems by manually adjusting opacity settings.  However, this time I can't get either to cooperate. Notice the line appearing below the phrase "the nutrient recommendation map" in the image below.  This line or a similar line will appear as title either cross dissolve into one another or if they are stand alone and the opacity settings fade them in and out.  The blinking of the lines is sporadic and changes as I make adjustments.  I'll "fix" one spot but they will start to blink at other points in the time line and in different areas.
    Any ideas?

I ask because I think I'm having a similar problem.  Went home and updated PPro to 5.0.3 and still have the issue.
The screen shot here show the first seconds of an HDV30/60 sequence as the video fades in (bottom layer - lasts about 2 seconds).  The top layer is a mask to create the effect of a cinescope camera (no fade).  I've cropped the left for demo purposes.
The bottom layer is regular ol' HDV footage.  The top layer was created using a Photoshop file with 2 squares using the shape tool and colored black.
For pre-view and render, you can see a light-colored hair line around the top mask.  I've applied different effect to remove it, but it won't work.  In fact, some effects make it stand out even more.  I've also tried using other assets from the PSD (PNG, PPro black video, etc).  I also tried the cropping work-around but it did not work.
The screenshot is subtle but it's there.  The main thing is that it can be VERY noticable in the BD-R discs I've created played back on set-top players so I'm really hoping there is a fix for it.  I did notice that it will appear when I scrub with my finger on the left mouse key.  As soon as I let go it appears again.
So PPro is up to date, graphics card is up to date, and I've tried suggested fixes and a few of my own with no luck.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Erik

  • Cross dissolving in Final Cut Pro 10.0.8

Hi there, seriously struggling with cross dissolving in Final Cut Pro 10.0.8.
The problem is simple: I don't know how to do it, and I can't find the option to do it. Right clicking doesn't give me the option to 'Add Cross Dissolve'. I eventually found it by clicking 'Lift From Storyline'  and then clicking 'Add Cross Dissolve' but I can't navigate it at all...I'm trying to cross dissolve from one clip to another without it fading to black in between. Can someone help me, or point me in the direction of a tutorial? I've been looking for ages now and not found one that I can use!
This is how it looks at the moment...The clip on the left fades to black and then the next clip starts really suddenly, neither of which I want to happen, but this is the closest I've got after hours of trying to make sense of it!

Lift From Storyline is not what you want, as you've found.
    Command-T
Highilght the In or the Out point of a clip, the default transition (Cross Desolve) is applied to that edit point.
Hiighlight a whole clip, or series of clips together, the default transition is applied to all In and Out points for all selected clips.
In the Transition Browser, right-click a cilp and select "Make Default Transition" to change which is the default.
In the Transition Browser, select the "All" catagory in the left column, the first one listed is the one currently set at the Default Transition.
You can also drag-and-drop from the Transition Browser, or highilght an In or Out point, or a single or series of clips, and double-click a transition in the browser.

  • No audio cross dissolve in iMovie 10.0.8/Yosemite?

I know iMovie is not a professional editing solution, but I am baffled why I cannot cross-dissolve audio clips but I can do so with picture.
Before the flamers start in on me, I am going to be teaching an editing class in an inner city magnet school and the program was mis-managed, which is why myself and another are coming in. The students, very bright and very passionate about filmmaking, are not up and running on Final Cut X or any other "more professional" editing platform yet, and in order to meet a deadline, a much simpler solution like iMovie is going be the ticket.
So, it has been a while since I used iMovie for anything, but it seems to me Apple has hamstrung it and removed a lot of features I remember.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

"I am baffled why I cannot cross-dissolve audio clips but I can do so with picture"
Well it's done automatically in the case of two video clips with attached audio that have a Cross Dissolve transition between them.
When you have detached or independent audio clips just overlap them and use the fade handles to fade one out and the next in.   See  below:
    See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3b5ded23e for more details

  • FCPX cross-dissolve on only one end of a clip?

How do you apply an effect (in this case, Cross-Dissolve) to only the beginning or end of a clip?  The program automatically applies the effect to both ends of a clip, and I have to delete the one I don't want (added step, added time, time is money, blah blah blah )
Here's what I'm trying to do:  I have my main storyline, and in a secondary storyline I want to fade a clip in at a certain point...but I don't want it to fade out. Adding the cross-dissolve at the beginning saves a lot more time than keyframing the opacity.
Yeah, I'll say the same thing everyone else does:  "Well, that's what I did in legacy FCP.  How do I do it in FCPX?"
    Thanks in advance.

hit cmd T but why? where has copy/cut/paste/add transition et al gone from the right click? It just seems a backward step having to use a keyboard again. Sadly I can now no longer use a programed 15 button edit shuttle/controller under my left hand and a five button hyper scroll mouse under the right. Hardly ever used the keyboard in previous versions. This has to be a backward step. Forever tippy tap on the keyboard...so so slow, wasted seconds for extra moves just to get something to happen. Are we all forgetting just how fast it was to apply a transition, copy then bang bang bang along the timeline pasting it in the joins?
