Cross Over Games - LOTRO - and MacBook
Hi all. I was just wondering if someone could help me. I own a macbook but want to play Lord of the Rings Online using the CrossOver Games software. I have read that that software will play LOTRO but I am more concerned with making sure that my computer will run the game. Unfortunately, I know NOTHING about disk space/memory space/whatever. It's all Greek to me.
I was wondering if someone could help me figure out if the game will run on my computer before I ask someone to buy it for me for Christmas. It would be awful to spend that money only to find out that my computer isn't fast enough/doesn't have enough space to run it.
Under my "About This Mac" tab, it says "Processor 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM"
The system requirements for LOTRO are:

If it is really just this one game, then it would be overkill
On the other hand you have to buy Crossover Games, while BootCamp is already part of OSX Leopard.
So it might be a 'dead race' cashwise.
I have considered downloading the free trial (it was unavailable for a while but maybe it is back up now) but I will still have to wait until after Christmas when I get the CrossOver Games software before I can test it. I suppose I could just not open the LOTRO and do the trial first. That way if it doesn't run well, I can return the game.
That depends on where you buy this game and if you can persuade the shop owner to let you do this.
To my knowledge opening the package of a game usually disqualifies it for return.
But it can't hurt to ask.

Satellite C660D-1GD: no sound and Red Cross over speaker
Just turned on my Laptop, Satellite C660D - 1GD and my sound isn't working.
There is a red cross over the speaker and the diagnosis didn't help at all.
Tried a system restore, nothing - no change at all. Tried going through the system drivers and there is no driver for sound :o. Ok, came to this site, downloaded the correct driver, installed and restarted and nothing again :s .
Updated the BIOS and then went into and checked the BIOS, and even checked for simple sound to just have my time wasted. Any help would be great.

Did you check if mute isnt enabled?
Press FN + ESC to enable or disable mute

Check if the devices in the playback tab are activated and set as default device
Additionally click right to ensure that options are marked like; show hidden devices, show disabled devices

The sound card is from Realtek.
So you can download the Realtek HD audio driver from Realtek driver page
Before installing new driver, uninstall installed Realtek driver from control panel -> programs & features -
I am changing to iCloud on my iMac, MacBook Air and my iPhone. My iMac and MacBook both moved over to iCloud but my iPhone when I go to Settings and click on iCloud it shows my Mail setting turned Off. When I turn it on it wants me to create a new email address to turn on iCloud Mail. I already have to "me" accounts plus another email address and don't want to create another one. I don't understand why it's asking me to do this on my iPhone but didn't ask on my iMac or MacBook and is there a way around creating another @me.com email address?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
The keyboard of my 11-inch MacBook Air, purchased in November 2011, isn't working at all. None of the keys respond except the power button. I'm able to restart the computer, and have done so multiple times. I've attempted SMC and PRAM resets, but they haven't worked.
I've never spilled anything on the laptop, haven't stepped on it, and haven't otherwise damaged it ever. I use the laptop very lightly. I only use it to take notes for class, browse the Internet, and watch movies. I don't download anything but PDFs, PowerPoints, images, and Word documents. I don't even have music on it. So I don't think I had any part in creating the problem.
I had this same problem with my laptop over the summer, and I took it into the Apple Store to get it repaired for $200. They told me that they didn't know the cause of the problem. I think they replaced the bottom half of my laptop entirely (receipt says there's a new "Housing, Top Case with Keyboard, US") and told me the problem was fixed. This was on June 30. The laptop keyboard stopped working again today, October 19. I called Apple Support and they told me that I would have to pay for the repair again because it's been 90 days since the last repair. I'm annoyed and upset that I have to pay $200 again to re-repair a problem that should've been properly fixed the first time. Plus, if the problem keeps happening despite multiple repairs, I can't afford to keep getting the laptop repaired over and over again due to the Apple employees' incompetence.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix the laptop? I'm a grad student and don't have the funds to pay for another repair, and there's no way for me to get to an Apple Store without hiring a car service, so I'm trying to avoid going to the store if possible. Hi! I work with Photoshop/Premiere Elements 10 on my snow leopard (10.6.8) without problems since years. Now I want to move over to the new MacBook Pro (and lion 10.7.5) but only Photoshop runs on it, every Premiere version (I downloaded Elements 12 and further more) stops installation and shows Installation ERROR: ASU has quit unexpectedly, Media DB Error: 18. Everything seemed to work fine after moving everything over from my old MacBook Pro at first but I cannot run Outlook 2011 for Mac. The logo displays briefly and then the app closes. It never really even gets anything loaded other than the little logo.
Try removing and reinstalling Outlook

according to icnd1, we need to use crossover cable to connect similar devices, lets say router to router or switch to swicth..

Hmm, I don't know, does it really matter whether the link between devices can be used? (Laugh)
As the other posters have noted, many (newer) devices now support auto MDI/MDIX, but some don't. (Also, on devices that do, auto negotiation might be required to be enabled.) Some older devices sometimes have "special" uplink ports or manual method to switch the port's MDI/MDIX setting, and for those, too, you can use a strait through cable.
If none of the above, however, you'll need a cross over cable for "similar" device types, i.e. those whose tx/rx pins, on the port, are the same.
You need a cross over cable if both sides are MDI or MDIX (i.e. the same), straight cable if both sides are different. -

I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook very slow. Browsing has become slow. Mail hardly moves. It takes ages to show contents of inbox, yes including previously downloaded emails too. Thus the overall experience is very disappointing. IS THERE A WAY TO GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS OS X that I had? OS X Mavericks should be renamed as OS X HAVOCKWRECKS.

I plugged my phone into my friends MacBook over the summer and now that I try to download an app his apple Id shows up and asks for his password. How do I change this?
Go to settings >> iTunes and app stores. Tap on the appleid and change it yours. If you had downloaded any apps using your friend's id then you will need his/her password to update those apps. But you should be able to download any new apps using your id once you've have the change in settings.
