Cross-platform links in ID CS3

Hello all, here's the story.
We have 4 Mac Users and 2 PC users working in In-Design CS3. (The Mac users have the whole CS3 Design Suite)
The In-Design files are stored on a PC Server (2003).
The image files are stored on a Mac Server (running Server 10.5.7).
When a PC user opens a file and fixes any missing links, the paths are shown with backslashes. (i.e. \\jcjgr1\images\hotels\image2384.tif)
When a Mac user opens a file and fixes any missing links, the paths are shown with colons. (i.e. :jcjgr1:images:hotels:image2384.tif)
When a user of the other platform then opens the file, all the paths are shown the wrong way and every link is missing.
Is there any way to have the image paths translate across platforms without moving the images to the same server as the document? (and would that even work?)
Thanks for any help!
Mike

  • Cross-Platform Links

I'm freelancing in a small design office where the artists work on Macs and everyone else works on PCs. I've come to understand that Macs and PCs see the same server paths differently. If I save a file on a Mac with a good link to
    \Volumes\MKTimages\photos\presenters\T\TonitoD_hcs.tif
    I must relink it to
    L:\photos\presenters\T\TonitoD_hcs.tif
L: and MKTimages are PC and Mac names for the same network drive.
Because the art files are arranged alphabetically  in separate folders it's not practical to relink art every time we pass a file from Mac to PC or vice versa. For years now, they've dealt with this limitation by having the artists do all the picture work. Now I'm being asked to work on a PC, and I need to be able to place pictures.
I found a script that will change MKTimages to L:, but I'd be happier with a plugin. Is there a plugin that will automatically interpret Mac server paths as PC server paths and vice versa? Seems like a simple problem that someone must have already worked around.

  • Cross platform CS on PC to CS3 on Mac does not work like video says

Your video on cross platform workflow states that you can import older Premier CS files on a PC into CS3 on a Mac. I tried this and get the message, "this project was saved in a aversion prior to Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and cannot be opened on a Mac. Please refer to the User Guide for import options." I guess I have to assume then that the video, www.adobe.com/go/vid0236, is wrong about this? Can someone please explain how I can salvage the work I did 3 years ago on Premiere Pro 1 on a PC when I am now exclusively working on the Mac in CS3?
    Thank you.

    Ty,
This has come up a few times and the solution is to find a PC CS3 user, who will Open the Project and then Save it in CS3-CS4 for you. I does mean that you'll have to befriend a PC-person, but who knows, maybe you can reciprocate later on. In each previous instance, this workflow, PC to PC to Mac worked perfectly. Note: the same holds for Encore Projects, and there is some PC to PC incompatibilities between very early versions and later versions. I had to Open and Save an Enocre 1.0 Project in CS2, so a CS4 (only) user could then Open in CS4. This stuff happens, and the skip in Mac porting can play a role in it. If I had CS3 on my PC's, I'd do it for you, but CS2 will not hlep you.
I believe that P 6.5 was the last previous version ported for the Mac, until CS3.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Can you still get a cross platform upgrade for CS3?

I'm a mac user and recently purchased CS3 Design Premium for windows used -- does anyone know you can still get a cross platform upgrade from windows to mac without upgrading to CS4?

I am very, very sorry to read that. My windows pc is just crashed because of a virus my payed anti-virus program could not deal with, and everything have to be cleared totally. (XP pro - browser used at the virus-time = Mozilla. Anti-virus program = The price winning PC-tools)
Have to start all over again from scratch.
Therefore I wanted to change to a new Mac machine for my CS3.
I know I could upgrade to CS4, but do not need the CS4 for the time being, so I have to stay with Windows.
Alle my other programs - Nikon - Topaz -  Nik-software - Hemi. - Jason Odell - have been so very helpfull and trusted me and have send me new keys - THANK YOU, you have a lot of problems when this problem happens, so they removed some of the stones, , but not Adobe, they said by telephone (I also tryed a mail, but no answer), that I have to sit at the pc for installing and then try to call them by telephone to get help for autentification, and nobody can promise me it will be the same day.
Last time it took one and a half our to get through by telephone.
I really love your program (CS3 extended) ....... but not this.

  • DW CS3 cross-platform check in/out file locking

    Here is my setup:
    * Apple X-Serve file server (as a mapped drive on several
    Windows XPsp2
machines and a shared drive on one Mac 10.4)
    * Up-to-date Dreamweaver CS3 on every machine (3 windows, 1
    mac)
    * Enable file check in and check out (site preference for all
    installations)
    * Contribute compatibility (site preference for all
    installations)
The problem is that when a file is checked in on the mac, the
    file becomes
locked such that the windows machines can't check out the
    file. All of the
windows machines check out and check in files with no problem
    if the mac hasn't
touched them. Once the mac has checked in a file, I have to
    "unlock" the file
via the right-click context menu on the file. (This unlock is
    called "Turn off
Read Only" on the windows version.)
Windows FTP Log on check out after mac check in:
    /.../public_html/help/faq.php - locked
/.../public_html/help/faq.php - error occurred - An FTP error
    occurred -
    cannot get faq.php.
    /.../public_html/help/faq.php - unlocked
Apparently the Mac DW CS3 version of "Check in" and the
    Windows DW CS3 version
of "Check in" are different and incompatible. Has anyone else
    had this problem
or know of a solution? Removing the Mac is not an option.
This may or may not be related, but whenever a file is opened
    on the operating
system other than last edited (mac opens windows edited file
    or windows opens
mac edited file), the "Overwrite local copy" dialog shows up
    when checking out
a file. When a compare is made of the server/local files,
    there are no changes.
Both mac and windows have the same line ending settings in
    the preferences.

I'm having exactly the same issue. Has anyone experienced
this before, and if so have a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

In your Site definition, you need to specify the Remote Info
    of your
server, and then "Enable file checkin and checkout".

  • Dreamweaver CS3 vs. Cross platform

    Hello,
I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to purchase, is
it the Dreamweaver CS3 or the cross platform upgrade. Our offices
currently have a PC and use Dreamweaver 2 but we just purchased an
iMac and would like to continue using the webpage date that was
created on the PC Dreamweaver 2. What do I need to purchase for the
iMac in order to do this?
    Thanks for your time.

Dreamweaver 2 is extremely old and you will not be allowed to
upgrade it under Adobe's policies. You will need to just purchase a
new copy of DW CS3 if that is all you need.
This would hold true if you stayed on the PC side as well
because you are only allowed to upgrade from the previous 3
versions which are 8, MX 2004 (7), and MX (6).

  • External Hard Drive won't appear on PC (want cross platform)

I have an external USB Hard Drive. I formatted it using the Disk Utility, OS Format and Journaling. Did a small partition in case I needed a system boot drive. Now my sis needed to backup her laptop (Dell laptop), but the drive won't appear in My Computer, it recognizes there is a USB device on the lower task bar, but no drive anywhere.
Do I have to reformat? what steps do I need to make this USB drive cross-platform friendly?
    Paul

    Hi, Paul.
You may not want to reformat the drive as FAT-32 since there is a limit on the size of the partition, the maximum file size, and other issues, especially if her Dell's drive is formatted as NTFS (FAT-32 does not support NTFS extended attributes). FAT-32 is unsuitable for backing-up Mac OS X volumes as it cannot preserve the extended attributes (permissions, etc.) employed by Mac OS X.
It's really best if you each have your own external hard drive for backup, as part of implementing a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution, such as I use and detail in my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ. You also don't want one person inadvertently writing over another person's backups, which could happen if one is not careful. Furthermore, it is often easiest for recovery.
How one handles backup in cross-platform environments is tricky and depends on the native formats employed by the different computers involved, and whether backup will be performed over a network or by directly connecting backup drives to the computers one is backing up.
To enable her Dell to use the Mac-formatted drive, install Mediafour's MacDrive for Windows on the PC. MacDrive for Windows is probably the state-of-the-art application for enabling you to use Mac-formatted disks and hard drives on Windows-based PCs.
    Good luck!

  • Cross-file links failing under Linux

    (Cross-posted to FrameUsers list)
    FM 9 p250 on WinXP Pro SP3
    Acrobat Pro Extended 9.3.2
I am  struggling with links across PDF files.  They all work in Windows, but  some work and some don't under Red Hat Enterprise 4 Linux.
I am  using the following directory structure to create a hierarchy of "menu"  pages with links to other PDFs:
    C:\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\nCode  Desktop 6.0 ISR2\source_docs\contents\Draft for .fm files and .book  files; C:\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\nCode Desktop 6.0  ISR2\source_docs\contents\Draft\graphics for graphics.
There are  about 50 other directories for PDF documents (they are what you arrive  at using the menus), one for each .book and .fm file set, with a path  such as C:\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\nCode Desktop 6.0  ISR2\source_docs\designlifetheory\draft.  This creates  designlifetheory.pdf. There are crosslinks to other pdfs from within  some of these files.
For the Contents "menus", I have created one  book per menu. Menus are a  single page long.
All of the books create single pdfs (i.e., not  multiple files per book). The books are all output to a single  directory, C:\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\nCode Desktop 6.0  ISR2\Deliverables.
I am using the newlink and gotolink  commands.  The newlink commands are all on master pages.  The gotolink  commands are all on body pages. A typical gotolink would be "gotolink  map_of_help.pdf:helpmap".  This one seems to fail consistently on Linux.  I have tried using "gotolink map_of_help.fm:helpmap", which also  fails.  Should I be using ".fm" instead of ".pdf" in the link?
The  .pdfs are created using Print to Adobe PDF.  The PDF Setup is Settings:  Standard Job Options, View Generated PDF in Acrobat, Convert CMYK  Colors to RGB; Bookmarks: Generate PDF Bookmarks; Tags: Generate Tagged  PDF; Links: Create Named Destinations for All Elements and Paragraphs.
I  have tried placing all the books in a single directory using Save As,  with all the paths relative, and books open, and with books closed.  I  have tried dumping all the .fm files and .book files into the same  directory. I have tried outputting to various directories.  I have  combed the archives, and tried to follow Shlomo's training module on  "FrameMaker Books & Cross-File Links."
I don't seem to get  it, whatever it may be.
Any help for this newbie appreciated.

    Your links look okay, directory-wise.
A link would be traversing the root directory if, say, the document is in some subdirectory below C:\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\ and the target was in, say, C:\nCode Masters 6.0 ISR2\....blah blah or on a different disk.
One other thing: Maybe it's just me and my UNIX background, but using spaces in pathnames or filenames just feels like you're asking for trouble, especially if you want the end product to be portable to other platforms.
If the links are relative and they work on Windows, as you say they do, then my guess is that Reader on Linux is the problem. Try viewing them using xpdf on Linux and see if the links work then.
As matter of fact, I issue a very large manual set (69 manuals with approximately 400,000 links) for my Linux customers, and some time ago I abandoned Reader 8.1.2 on Linux in favour of xpdf because I didn't have the time to wait for a fix. The truth is, the links in Reader 6.0 didn't work either, and I was fed up with having to test every new Reader version that came out to see if it actually worked.
I'd be interested to know if you trace the problem to Reader on Linux, and if you find a Reader version later than 8.1.2 on Linux that works.

  • Are cross-platform upgrades allowed?

I own a copy of Adobe CS3 for Windows. I have recently purchased a Mac, and need to get Adobe Creative Suite (preferably CS6) set up on it. Do I need to buy a completely new version of Creative Suite for the Mac, or can I buy a Mac upgrade version, and then use my serial code from CS3 Windows version to validate the upgrade version on my Mac? If I can do that, is it allowed to also buy an upgrade version of CS6 for Windows, and install that using the same CS3 license key to validate the upgrade version on Windows?

Yes ,it is possible to upgrade from cs3 to cs6 & that also cross platform, yes it should  accept the windows previous version serial key , The Enter Serial Number Upgrade dialog box also accepts the Windows serial number{if not then contact Adobe support }.
The best option is to place the order through the adobe sales team

  • Can I use Messages in OSX to text with a person on an Android platform? My iPhone works cross platform but I don't get the text in Messages on my desktop with OSX 10.8.2

Does "Messages" in OSX 10.8.2 work cross platform? My daughter has an android phone and I can text with her OK in iOS. However, her texts don't show up on OSX whereas texts from my son, who has an iPhone, work in iOS and OSX.

    HI,
The answer is yes and no.
As Barney-15E link says you can get the Messages app to SMS to AIM Buddies.  Or rather telephone Numbers as AIM Buddies.
    There are limits.
The computer has to be set as if in the United States (System Preferences > Language and Text > Region)
The phone is question has to be on a carrier that supports AIM SMS forwarding which only applies to some US based carriers.
The reason the SMS Messages arriving on the iPhone do not sync is that they are not iMessages  (the "No" Part).
I use Messages with the Buddy List Showing.
As a test I have added a made up number as a Buddy and also created a Address Card for it.
So Mousing over the "Buddy" reveal the "Screen Name" which is the phone Number
You have to include the Leading +1 country code as well.

  • No Pre-CS4 cross-platform upgrades anymore?

I bought CS3.3 Web Premium for Windows 2 1/2 months ago. Before I purchased I confirmed with Adobe Customer Service that I can exchange it to the Mac version for free.
This week I finally purchased a Mac and called Adobe to get the Mac version, and was told that my only option would be to upgrade to CS4 Mac (for $$$) and that they no longer sell / send out version 3.3.
Can this be for real? I just bought it 2 1/2 months ago and they are no longer honoring their free cross-platform upgrade policy. It's hard to imagine that they don't have 3.3 in stock any more. It's not like I am requesting a CS2 Win to CS2 Mac upgrade. I just spend a lot of money, and now they want me to spend even more money...
Any ideas? Anybody at Adobe reading this?
    Greg

Now that makes sense. I'm beginning to thing that the techs and sales people at Adobe don't really know anything. I spoke to three, and none of them even hinted at that possibility.
I also spoke to someone at Apple who said that their software couldn't damage the Mac's hardware, as well. It's hard to believe they'd keep it on the market without warnings, recalls or disclaimers, knowing it could do that much damage.
Sure leaves a bad taste in my mouth about Adobe. Maybe it's time for me to look at other software.
    Thanks,
    Michele

  • Cross-platform baOpenFile

I have an application with hundreds of small movies so i need to put them into a folder (called dswmedia) and an .exe and macintosh app to launch the application, outside the folder.
I'm using MX2004 and working on a PC XP2 to develop my app.
I have been trying to use baOpenFile to go from the .exe or .osx to a .dcr inside the dswmedia folder.
It works easily on the PC, but when I try on the Mac I get the error message "The application Projector quit unexpectedly."
I have checked every line of code and am sure the error doesn't happen until it comes to the line baOpenFile. I've checked the path on the Mac and it is correct.
I have tried opening another projector instead of the .dcr file, but it still quits unexpectedly. I have also tried a pdf document but it quit.
Can someone please tell me what I have to do to get it to work on the Mac?
any suggestion will be very welcome.
    Carmel

thanks so much Sean ... such a simple answer!
now it is almost working!!!, but it has a different problem, related to the cross-platform path for external script,
for some reason, when I open my app on the mac it is looking for the external script linked to the first movie, and is asking for it using a pc path.
so I will open a new discussion.

  • Recommended way to unit test mobile cross platform C++ in Visual Studio 2015

    Hello,
I'm playing with the new Visual Studio 2015 to check its capabilities for cross platform development using C++ as coding language. I've seen several videos in Channel9 about this feature but I don't remember hearing in any of these a word about how
to unit test such projects from Visual Studio 2015. Is there some recommended way to create unit tests for such projects?
I'm not sure I can use Visual Studio test projects for C++ to test the android library or the Windows Phone 8.1. If I add a new platform ARM to a test project of those, I cannot select in the platform toolset combo the values that I have for my libraries
(Clang 3.4 and Windows 8.1 respectively). So it seems that such test projects are not addressed for cross platform c++ in VS2015.
I also have tried to make a second cross platform library project to contain the tests, adding there the Catch.h file from catch framework or adding the files from Google Test framework. My idea was to link each cross platform test library with their corresponding
"production code" libraries. In both cases (catch and gtest) I have problems when trying to compile the test framework files (not sure if it is not possible or just my fault being new at C++ for mobile platforms).
Has anyone succeeded unit testing the cross platform c++ code in VS2015? How?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jorge.

    Hi Jorge,
Thanks you for posting in MSDN forum.
Based on your issue, since VS2015 Preview is previews for the next major release of Visual Studio, currently we forums don’t provide support for VS2015 Preview. So the product team would accept the suggestions or feedbacks for the VS2015 now.
So you can submit the feedback/suggestions to Microsoft Connect feedback portal:
http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/CreateFeedback.aspx, Microsoft engineers will evaluate them seriously. Thanks for your understanding.
After you submit the feedback, you can post the link here which will be beneficial for other members with the similar issue. And I will help you to vote it.
    Thank you for your understanding.

  • Cross platform pdf CD-rom with hyperlinks

Hi there, I am suffering with some cross platform impatience.
Trying to make a cd-rom...the structure is from a root folder-containing an html file which is opened then select links to open particular PDF documents (that all works fine)
In the PDF document there are hyperlinks to other PDf docs, word docs, zip files and powerpoiunt files. They all work perfectly on the PC but no links working from the mac.
Mac is running OS X 10.5.
I have created the links by using the advanced editing options, then add custonm link and add file. Then i select the appropraite file.
I did do it on an older version mac to test too (running mac OS X 10.4.10) and all the linking files worked except for the zip files - which try open a web browser. Thats ok though but then i put the cd-rom in the newer mac and nothing is linking (like dead links)
Thanks for any help - this is an urgent job i have to get out. So speedy replies will be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Cross-platform upgrade question

I'm posting this question here as I have had less than satisfactory results from asking Customer Support about this issue. I know this forum is moderated by some great folks at Adobe and am hoping someone can clear up this question for me.
I currently own CS3 Design Premium for Windows, and need to purchase CS5 for Mac. A search for "Cross platform swap" on Adobe brought me to this page: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405819.html. However, the instructions there don't match what is offered on the support page. Under Return/Exchange/Refund I have only the following options:
    Duplicate Order
Product Didn't perform/ work as expected
    Purchased Incorrect upgrade
    Purchased Wrong Product/Platform/Language
    Shipping Problems
    Unable to Download Order
    Wrong Product delivered
None of those options is correct as described in the KB article. I decided to chat with Customer Support, and the rep told me that all I had to do is order the upgrade and I could choose which platform to install on first run. Really? The Rep said CS5 included two discs, one for Windows install and one for OS X. He assured me that I would have no problem installing a CS5 upgrade on my Mac, even though I have never installed CS3 on that machine.
I am skeptical about this solution for two reasons: one, Adobe has never offered Win and Mac discs together for CS versions. Two, when I go to pre-order CS5 I need to make a choice between platforms.
Has Adobe changed its method of delivering Creative Suite products? Are both platform discs really included? If not, there are two things that need to be done:
Article http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405819.html needs to be corrected. The steps as described cannot be completed.
Customer Support reps need to be notified that they are providing incorrect information regarding cross-platform upgrade procedures.
Finally, I need correct information as to how to go about upgrading my CS3 Windows to CS5 Mac. Do I purchase an upgrade disc and use my CS3 serial number to install? Do I do some sort of return, and if so, how?
Thanks in advance to anyone from Adobe who is willing to take the time to answer my question.

I don't represent Adobe in any capacity other than a mostly satisfied user. Here's what I did on a cross platform (Windows to Mac) exchange--not an upgrade, but my experience may help you.
I, too, found that the directions didn't match the support web site.  So I used 'Purchased wrong...' as my subject.  I then completely described what I wanted to do in the comments section.  I included my current platform version and serial number in the comments. After posting I had a case number to enter onto the Letter of Destruction (LOD) which I then attached to the case. I don't know if a LOD is required in your situation as you will be paying for an upgrade.  You should be able to keep both packages active-but customer support will probably know.  In my case I had to certify that I had destroyed the original Windows package.
After this was posted to the Adobe Customer Support Portal I then had a case number I could give to the telephone customer support so I called them.  While on the line with them they read my case file and informed me my credit card would be charged $5.95 for shipping.  Six days later I had the CS4 Design Premium for the Mac.  It *should* be just as easy for you.
I must say that I have had to call Adobe Customer Support a handful of times in the last couple of years.  In each and every case I received prompt and accurate information that solved my problem or pointed me directly to the solution.  I am aware that this is not always the case and wish you good luck.
