Cross posting: Screen Flicker/Throbbing at low brightness

I'm cross-posting from "The MacBook Pro Display" forum topic:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=376277&tstart=0
I got my MBP today and soon noticed that at low levels of brightness (levels one to three), the brightness of the screen flickers/throbs. To be clear: there is no interruption to the actual screen image, only the overall brightness of the screen.
It also happens when the screen dims after inactivity. It seems like the backlight is flickering sporadically about 2 to 5 times per second. Its especially noticable in my peripheral vision when I'm looking at my external LCD display alongside it. It is beyond a nuisance - if I stare at it for too long, I begin to feel physically uncomfortable!
I've found that it doesn't happen straight away, it takes a few minutes from having booted up for the effect to begin. Has anybody else noticed this problem?
MBP 2.16Ghz

I, too, was having flicker issues on my MacBook Pro. I'm pretty sensitive to flicker -- annoyingly so -- and was noticing it at full brightness as well, especially if the background was bright. Having not seen the posts here, it took awhile to track down, but turning off the aforementioned "automatically adjust screen brightness" nailed it. The ambient light was constant but I think my hands were partially shadowing the sensor. Problem solved and I no longer feel sick using the machine (generally considered a good thing).

  • The screen turns black with low brightness how to fix that?

    Just like the title says

    - Try accessing the accessibility features from iTunes.  connect the iPod to the computer and go to the Summary pane.  Click on Universal access and then change/turn off white on black.
    - If by "Re-intitializing" you mean:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    If not, try that.
    - You did look for accessibility on the iPod by going to Settings>Genera.Accessibility?
    - If you can't get to accessibility try restoring the iPod from backup.  If still problem then try restoring the iPod to factory defaults.

  • Ideapad U530 screen flicker

I recently bought the U530 with full HD touchscreen. I've noticed that the screen flickers when on battery, and it is especially noticeable in areas of the screen with dark colours. It's not a major flicker, but seems like ripples across the screen. Changing the screen refresh rate to 64Hz from 48Hz seems to make it better, but not completely.
Is this just a software issue or should I think about taking it in to get looked at?

Yup! I've been noticing the same issue on MY laptop too! I don't know why. It flickers very slightly if the screen is on its lower brightness levels. It slowly flickers brighter if the screen get bright (like if a Word document is open) and then it flickers darker on darker screens. I don't know how to fix it! I've already disabled the automatic brightness adjuster and still no results. Does anybody know a fix? or at least the cause? I'm sure it must be a driver of some sort seeing as there is no BIOS update.

  • Screen flicker at low brightness

    Hi all
I have a macbook pro unibody 15" and I seem to be getting a screen flicker at low brightness settings.
I used to have a macbook and it never did this.
Is this normal and if not, is there anything that I can do about it?

    Hi G,
I was going to suggest having it checked for the NVIDIA issue, but you state you have a unibody. If you have a new unibody, you would be best served if you posted in that forum (this area is for the Original MBP). Good luck.

  • IPHONE SCREEN ON PERMANENT LOW BRIGHTNESS

My iphone 3GS is on permanent low brightness. like the lowest it can go. i have turned it up to full but it stays on the lowest?
it was working normally but the screen was flickering and then it shut down to the lowest brightness even though the little brightness meter is on full.
and my cameras not working either
any suggestions on what i should do?
    thanks

At a guess the backlight has gone. If your phone is still under warranty then take it in.

  • 5800 low brightness screen

My 5800, bought last January, presented the well known stripes-on-the-screen problem. I've got it repaired in a Nokia care point but the new display has a lower brightness, yellowish tones and uneven luminosity (darker in the very top section, lighter in the bottom area). I've noticed these changes at the first power-on after the repair but, to be sure, I've put it side-by-side with another 5800 I had and the first impression has been confirmed. I suspect the display has been replaced with a refurbished or a defective one.
I've asked the Nokia care point to get me a good-enough display, leaving again my 5800. They've called me back after 6 hours telling that the screen had been changed again (I don't believe them) but the situation was exactly the same because:
"the most recent 5800 displays act like this; they are all the same and less bright than the ones used by Nokia before".
This would be the first time display technology evolves toward lower quality. Is there anybody who can confirm or deny the Nokia carepoint thesis? Any suggestion on how I can get an equal or better 5800 after the in-warranty repair? Thanks a lot. Antonio

Confirmed by another Nokia point. The new 5800 displays are less bright than the previous ones, may be for longer battery use. This is a shame for a full display phone that I use also as a navigator. My next one will not be a Nokia, for sure.

  • Does all imac screen flickers at low brightness?

Hi, I just got the 21.5" imac.
I notice there's this minor flickering problem at low brightness, is this normal?
It seems like it's a known issue after I researched about it.
Is it a hardware problem or a software problem?
    Should I exchange it?
    Thanks for the help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
No that isn't normal, call AppleCare in the morning the number is in your owners manual.

  • How can I reproduce my screen flicker so they'll believe me?

The intermittent nature of the annoying screen flicker on my Macbook makes it difficult to show a tech that it is a real problem and not some figment of my imagination. Does anybody know of a "sure fire" way of reproducing it? I have been able to recreate the rapid dimming and brightening of my Macbook screen by moving the brightness indicator all the way to the left and then bumping it up one click. This only works sometimes and it only works when I do it by clicking and dragging on the ball on the display screen in system prefs. It doesn't work by using f1 and f2. I made a video of my screen while it was flickering and put the video on the desktop. I'm sending it in as soon as my box arrives on Tuesday. They're also replacing my stained top case. I hope they will look at the video and at least test the inverter and cable to see if they're the problem. Any help with how to encourage them would be greatly appreciated.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I am the victim of this problem also. The screen flickering & brightness of the screen suddenly fade to low intensity. The screen flickering happened everytime I use my MacBook.
May MacBook was the initial Jun 2006 version.
I already get those problems (a) sudden shutdown (replace the logic board), (b) palm rest area discoloration (change the bottom case), (c) power adaptor pin contact problem (replace the new one), (d) poor performance of battery life (awaiting confirmation from local Apple support, 180cycle max. charge only 50% of initial capacity) & (e) screen flicker issue (today just send in my MacBook for them to do diagnostic).
I really lost confident with my MacBook.
Should I request a replacement of entire MacBook?
My warranty period will be expired mid of next month & the are asking me to purchase the apple protection plan. But, I claim that the unit is poor in initial build quality & why I should considered the plan. It is unfair to me.
If the MacBook is in good condition then I will consider the plan for support another 2 years (fair), not in this reverse way.
Anybody please guide me how to pursue this matter.
I previously own an iBook G4 & PowerBook G4 TI don't have these problem at all.

  • Screen flicker imac

My new iMac 27"  seems to have a slight screen flicker at low light settings. If I adjust the brightness higher it goes away, but comes back when dimmed to the previous low level. There is no banding or stripes on the screen, it seems like the backlight is flickering.

Apple has stated that their Mountain Lion version of OS X and its Bootcamp are NOT compatible with "Windows 8" versions yet. That is the source of your problem.

  • Screen Flicker (Flashing)

Hi there, I am having a trouble with a screen flicker or flashing frequently. Its HP Pavilion X2 10.1-inch Detachable 2 in 1 Laptop. It usually repeats when i get connect it to the internet or watch a video or the battery is lower then 40% or so?
    Help Please?

    Hi @Rotash
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having trouble with your screen flickering, or flashing when watching video, or connected to the internet. I am happy to assist with this.
You mentioned it also happening when the battery is below 40%. Does the problem happen as well when the computer is plugged in to power, or does it only happen when running on the battery?
Are you running several applications at the same time, or do you have any other peripherals plugged in to the ports such as external hard drives?
Also, please post the full product number of your notebook. See the following, if you need help in finding that.

  • Perpetual Screen Flicker

I posted a question back in June about my monitors flickering on and off at sporadic intervals. I'm reposting, hoping a fresh set of eyes will see the question and help me out. Thank you.
Without warning, my monitors will take turns turning blue, then black, then coming back on again in a cycle that repeats for as long as 15 minutes. On the black screen, I get a small message that reads "no signal." Just before the monitors 'die' I lose control of my cursor. Any suggestions? Does the info below help? Thanks!

I have a new MacBook Pro 15 inch that I bought the first day they were available. I too have noticed screen flicker. It only occurs on the left side of the screen and is only noticeable at somewhat reduced brightness. I'm trying to decide whether to take it back to Apple for repair or replacement, or whether it should be considered within the working parameters of the screen, as it's not apparent at "normal" brightness, i.e., the brightness most people probably use most of the time. Has anyone consulted Apple about this and got a response?

  • Did the MBP software update 1.0 fix screen flicker?

    the title says it all.
I have been waiting to get my MBP until apple fixes the screen flicker. is now the time for me to buy!!!???!!!
    thanks,
    a

Yes. My flicker was most noticeable when i was using dashboard and had a white background for my desktop on any setting less than full brightness. After the update the problem is gone as I type this at a low brightness setting. I think the Nvidia card was not optimized for LED back lighting.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen SCREEN FLICKER

I've just received my brand new iPod Touch 4G. Unfortunately my screen "flicker" badly. I've tried to reset the unit. Set brightness lower and higher. Disabled automatic brightness. Closed all apps running in the background. Enabled/disabled bluetooth and/or WiFi but the screen still flicker
I have not installed any apps yet. Not even connected to a WiFi network either.
Any one have the same issue ?
I think it's simply a defective unit that I'll get replaced on warranty since it has only one hour of use but I wanted to ask here just in case there is a possible fix.

ok, my brand new iPod touch 4G is going back following a Product Replacement Request. I'll see what happens after I get it back. Most probably a defective unit I got.
I hope it will not take too long !!

  • 13" MacBook Pro - Screen Flicker / Windows 7 Bootcamp

I have a 13" MackBook Pro with Retina display that I purchased last December (8 months old).  I am running Windows 7 in Bootcamp and the last few months the screen flickers on occasion (becoming more frequent).  I launched the Mac OS to ensure I have the latest updates and I believe I do (nothing new to install within the Mac OS).  Majority of the time I'm hooked up to an external monitor / lid is closed, but obviously that is a challenge when traveling.
I did do some searches and see other posts around screen flicker issues, but those appear to be on the Mac OS side.  What is odd about my scenario is that it only seems to appear on the Windows 7 side.  I can't seem to find a fix for this / really would hate to have to reload the machine.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my brand new 15" MBP right now.
The only problem I'm having is the USB controller issue that is reported in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2411685&start=30&tstart=0
I ran the Boot Camp assistant, made the partition, rebooted with my 7 DVD, formatted the partition, performed a clean installation, & then installed the drivers from the OSX DVD when Windows booted the first time.
Replaced the NVIDIA drivers with the latest Verde release. 258.96notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
Everything seems to be running just fine at this point.

  • [LAVA Cross Post] CTRL+SHIFT+Alpha Shortcuts don't work in LabVIEW

    Cross-post from LAVA: http://lavag.org/topic/15619-ctrlshift-shortcuts-sometimes-not-working-in-labview/
Bug Synopsis: CTRL+SHIFT+Alpha shortcuts do not work in LabVIEW. Most notably, CTRL+SHIFT+Z, CTRL+SHIFT+E, and CTRL+SHIFT+S
    Test setup: LV2012 32bit with f1 patch running in Win7 64bit inside a Parallels 8 VM in OS X 10.8.1
To summarize the testing I have tried:
Many different LabVIEW, Guest OS, and Host OS combinations all fail, including:
    LV2012f1 32 and 64 bit, and LV2009 32 bit
    Win7 32 and 64bit, and also WinXP x64
    Parallels 7 and Parallels 8
    OS X 10.7 and 10.8
Capturing the keyboard by the VM
Twiddling every keyboard setting possible on Parallels, Guest, and Host
    Reinstalling keyboard drivers
Plugging in a known-good keyboard that works on a native Windows machine
Deleting LabVIEW.ini and letting it regenerate
Remapping the shortcuts from, e.g., CTRL+SHIFT+E to CTRL+E - in this case, "Show in Project" works, so this might indicate it's a problem registering the shortcut press, not invoking the action itself.
Sending the keystrokes via on-screen keyboards from both Guest and Host
Sending the keystrokes via SendInput from user32.dll WinAPI
Testing every imaginable combo of FN, CONTROL, ALT/OPTION, COMMAND/CMD, SHIFT
Reinstalling VMs from scratch and reinstalling LV
Here's a kicker: CTRL+SHIFT+Alpha shortcuts work fine on other Windows programs (I've tried 4 different programs, including Chrome, Notepad++, Paint.NET), yet it does NOT work for VIPM with CTRL+SHIFT+C. This means that the only two programs where the CTRL+SHIFT+Alpha bugs exist are both LabVIEW-related.
Here's another kicker: It's only CTRL+SHIFT+Alpha shortcuts with the prob - CTRL+SHIFT+3 properly toggles grid alignment, and the "Tools >> Options >> Menu shortcuts" will register any CTRL+SHIFT+Non-alpha shortcut; it just does not respond to the CTRL+SHIFT+Alpha shortcuts.
Any new troubleshooting ideas are highly appreciated; please feel free to jump in here or on LAVA.
