Cross References Being Lost InDesign CS4

I am setting up cross-references in a multiple
document book using InDesign CS4 (Windows).
When our editors open the files using InCopy CS4
some of the cross-references are broken (little red flag icon appears).
I've relinked the cross-references several times but everytime
an InCopy user opens the file the cross-references are lost again.
The sources and destinations are within the same document.
I'm using Paragraph number as the cross-referencing method.
Does it have something to do with the InDesign files being part of a Book?
Any help would be great.
Thanks, Bill

It's possible that being a book component file that's separated from its other component files has some effect.
I believe that x-refs look for a coded marker to keep up-to-date, not the paragraph number, so even if the numbers get out of whack because they continue from a previous file, this shouldn't cause the problem.
I don't know how x-refs appear in IC. Is it possible to hover over the error indicator and see an explanation of the problem? If so, please post the message.
Do the x-refs become resolved when you return the document to the book in ID?

  • Acrobat 9 Pro: Links to Word TOC and cross references are lost

I'm testing Acrobat 9 Pro and while it successfully creates a PDF from Word 2003 with bookmarks, all my TOC and internal page reference links are lost.
I have triple checked the conversion settings from the Adobe PDF menu option in Word, and the "Convert cross-references and table of contents to links" check box is definitely selected.
I used the same Word document on another machine with Acrobat 6 Pro installed - and the TOC and cross ref links were created successfully. As far as I can see the Adobe PDF settings in Word 2003 on both machines are the same - the only difference is that one uses Acrobat 6 Pro and the other uses Acrobat 9 Pro.
The only setting in 9 Pro I turned off was the 'enable accessibility tagging' one; it's also turned off in 6 Pro. The remaining settings are the default.
A clickable TOC and internal links is essential for my clients who often have 400+ page documents.
Anybody have any suggestions? Or can anybody confirm that they do/don't get the same behavior in Acrobat 9 Pro?

Thanks Abhigyan - your test PDF worked fine for me.
This is what I've done today:
    1. Checked for all instances of pdfm*.dot files and removed any that were lurking in old Application Data and Microsoft Office folders.
    2. Deleted all Acrobat 5 and 6 folders and subfolders still lurking in Program Files.
    3. Used Add/Remove to delete Adobe Reader 8 and its updates. I figure I can always install Reader 9 if I need it as a separate app.
    4. Checked that everything was gone using the Windows Installer CleanUp utility (it was).
    5. Restarted my machine.
    6. Turned off my anti-virus software.
    7. Did a search for any pdfm*.dot files - found one only in the current Microsoft Office folder and left it there.
    8. Reinstalled Acrobat 9 Professional.
    9. Opened my test Word 2003 document.
    10. Checked all the Acrobat conversion settings and left them as the defaults.
    11. Converted the doc to PDF and checked for internal links. Yes! The TOC links worked! But my joy was short-lived as the page link didn't work...
    12. Tried various other conversion settings based on some suggestions from Lance in first level Adobe Support yesterday - still no page link. And I also lost the TOC links when I cleared the Enable Accessibility check box on the Settings tab of the conversion settings.
    13. Checked the Edit > Preferences > Convert To PDF settings for Word in Acrobat 9 - add bookmarks and add links are both selected (default).
    14. Used Acrobat 9 to create the PDF (File > Create > From File) hoping that this might might a difference. Nope. No TOC or page links.
    15. Changed conversion settings back to default via Word 2003, and created a PDF from a longer document. Again the TOC links worked, the URLs worked (they always did), the bookmarks worked (they always did too), but the none of the internal page cross-reference links worked.
    So my summary is this:
    * I can only create TOC links *if* Enable Accessibility is turned on, but I have always turned this off in earlier versions of Acrobat as I don't need it and it made the process of creating a PDF from a long document incredibly slow - I'm wary of using it!
    * I cannot get internal page links to work at all, no matter which method I use to create the PDF (from within Word or within Acrobat), and no matter which conversion settings I select.
I really don't know what to try next. Manually creating links for what could be hundreds of cross-references in a single document is NOT an option, especially as I have many of these long documents.
    Any further suggestions?

  • Printing cross reference colour highlights InDesign CC

I am using cross references in InDesign CC and a different colour for each. Is it possible to print these from InDesign?

I believe you already have the settings for PDF appearance set in the Cross references dialog.
If you do and are still not seeing the result in the PDF then you need to turn on the setting of Hyperlinks on.
    Thanks

  • Creating Cross-References in an InDesign Tags file

I am tyring to create cross-refs to images in a tagged text file. Typically this will be used to create references like "See our display ad on Page n". I have studied the tags documentation and I can see how to create the cross-reference tag but I can't see how to link the tag to the appropriate image. If I create a test document, insert a couple of pictures, and add cross-references to those pictures, when I export the text to a tagged text file it refers to the pictures as, for example, "<HyperlinkDest:Anchor>" and "<HyperlinkDest:Anchor 2>". But I can't see how to specify exactly which image "<HyperlinkDest:Anchor>" refers to - there doesn't appear to be an "anchor" tag around the picture tp identify it.
    So how does this work?
    TIA
    Pat

    Hi Pat,
    BEfore exporting the tagged text.
    1. You have to create the Intereactive->New Hyperlink Destination [Figure 1.1].
    2. Create a Intereactive->New Hyperlink [See Figure 1.1] in this select the dest as [Figure 1.1]
    3. Then export as tagged text.

  • URGENT: JNDI Reference being lost

    Hi,
We have 2 Weblogic 5.1 Servers in a clustered mode. I have an unclusterable
object bound in the JNDI tree just for reference purposes. This object
implements Serializable, but it has a thread reference, and hence it cannot
be clustered. This object is bound from both servers with different names
lets call them OBJ_A and OBJ_B. Client Threads running on Server A can only
lookup OBJ_A and Client Threads running on Server B can only lookup OBJ_B
although due to the fact that the JNDI tree is clustered, the reference of
OBJ_A and OBJ_B is available on both Servers A and B. Let me make it more
clear by saying that the reference of OBJ_A on Server B is useless to the
Client Threads running on that Server (B) and also the reference of OBJ_B on
Server A is useless to the Client Threads running on that Server (A)
At startup everything is fine. However, I am noticing that after a while (a
while being 1-2 days or less) the JNDI reference of OBJ_A on Server A
disappears although I can see that the Thread that it represents is alive
and running, it keeps outputting its heartbeat. The funny thing is that, the
reference of OBJ_B on Server A still remains, and also the references of
OBJ_A and OBJ_B on Server B remain in the JNDI tree too.
Has anyone seen such a problem or a similar problem where the cluster-wide
JNDI tree loses its references and does not broadcast it to other servers?
Coz if the object was taken out of the JNDI tree, it should have gone from
    the other server as well.
I have several such objects listed in the JNDI tree, and their references
from Server A just disappear whereas they are still present in the JNDI tree
on Server B where they are really useless.
Please let me know if you have any insights.
    Thanks

Thanks Cameron, I am afraid I dont know if this will help. Basically I dont
care if JNDI replicates the entries or not.. but why should it forget a
reference when the object has not unbound itself, neither has the Thread it
runs on died. The object has also not been garbage collected.
So not sure yet.. but will try the option you mentioned.
Does anybody know if JNDI will release references of objects after certain
periods of inactivity? i.e. if no client 'looks up' an object for a certain
time, its binding will be released from the JNDI tree?
    Thanks for your help.

One thing I would suggest is using WL's option to not replicate theentries
that you are describing. I can't remember the name of the option off-hand,
but it's something like "don't replicate". Check the WL JNDIdocumentation.

  • RT FIFO Reference being "lost"

    Hi,
I've got a create RTFIFO module and a RTWRITE module. The write is inside a timed loop (5ms time on a PXI-8196 controller). However, I'm having some trouble getting data out of my FIFO. In trying to solve the problem I noticed an issue with probes and trying to observe the "reference" to the FIFO thatis passed between the VIs.
If I put a probe on the RTFIFO reference before it is in the timed loop I see a zero value. Inside the loop a see a large value that makes sense if it is interpreted as a memory address but then going through a tunnel in a conditional inside the timed loop the reference becomes zero again.
This is troubling from my perspective because I don't understand how the RTFIFO write knows "where" to write data at this point.
I've attached a picture with probes in reasonable places that should help illustrate my convoluted description.
    Attachments:
    RTFIFOIssue.JPG ‏26 KB

Actually, you aren't seeing what you think you're seeing. Notice that the two probes showing the zeros are grayed-out. This means they haven't updated since they were created. The one on the left has no structure around it so I would guess that you created the probe after execution passed that point. The right-hand probe looks like its inside a case structure, but it also hasn't updated so the case its in apparently hasn't executed, or it was also created after the execution finished.

  • Successfully importing cross-references from Microsoft Word into InDesign?

    Hello --
I am laying out a series of long documents (~130 pages each) in InDesign CS5.5.
The writer for the project has used cross-references in MS Word for areas like the TOC, index and page references ("See page X for more information").
Is it possible to import these cross-references into InDesign so that the InDesign document functions like the Word document with the cross-references?
I am thinking no because I am having a ton of trouble with it so far, but wanted to get a definite answer from an expert.
When I import the text, the cross-references appear in InDesign in the Hyperlinks/cross-reference panel. However, InDesign says they need to be updated based on the way the text flowed in InDesign. And when I click the auto update button, all sorts of funky stuff happens and basically -- the cross-references create a bunch of typos and become junk.
    Thoughts? Knowledge on this topic?
    Thanks in advance!!

I can't speak to general or specific causes of your cross-reference problems. However, I believe that InDesign x-refs behave a bit differently in CS4, CS5, and CS5.5, and if you have either of these earlier releases, you might try them for comparison.
Also, you might want to look into the free trial of DTP Tools' cross-references plug-in for InDesign, at dtptools.com, to see if it's more successful than InDesign's built-in x-refs.

  • Some of the cross-references lost in PDF

When converting Word to PDF using PDF maker,  some(not all) of the cross-references are lost.
The cross-references in the body text(link to some place in the same document) that are within the sentences are converted as normal text with no links.
The numbers links to certain pages are disabled, either.
Only several cross-references with the name of the headings linking to the corresponding headings are with links.
    I am quite confusing.
I am using Word 2003 in Windows XP, and the Acrobat X pro Trial.
I am applying to our boss to buy Acrobat X pro. But if this problem cannot be solved, I don't know if it worth the money or if my boss will permit the purchase.
So I want to know if this is the problem of word or acrobat? or the improper settings of mine(I use the default settings actually)? How to solve this? Please help~

    Hi,
I also use Acrobat X and for me all the cross-references work fine after converting Word Doc to PDF. Could you share the source Word file in which you are facing this issue? I can try to reproduce it at my end.
    Thanks,

  • Footnotes and Cross references

    Hi all,
I am using pages v 1.2 and I would like to know how can I insert footnotes (for bibliography purposes) such as in MS Word. I am writing a term paper, and the only way for me to include my book references is to manually writing them. Is there was a way to mark a book reference and then cross-reference it as in MS Word? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Victor Gomez.

Cross references can be created in InDesign beginning (I think) in CS4.
Google "InDesign cross reference help" for InDesign Help and tutorials in how to use the cross-reference feature.

  • Need to know xml flow cross references, Its Very Urgent Help me

need to know xml cross references coding and sample files for indesign cs3

As far as I know, cross references are available in CS4/5, not in CS3. It is possible to write a script that creates hundreds, thousands of them very quickly taking the necessary information, let's say from tagged text. You wrote only one line, so it's difficult to me to imagine what XML structure you have and what your requirements are. But here is a script I wrote a while ago -- probably you need something similar, and here's the source code (not final version, of course) to show the approach I used.

  • Cross Reference Sources appearing in Story Editor view but not appearing in the Cross Ref pane

I have imported a Word document containing working cross references into an InDesign document. The vast majority of these cross references import correctly and link to their destinations within the document, however there are some that are not working. If I view the text frame in the story editor view, I can see these "broken" cross reference sources that came in from the Word doc but on selecting them I can see that there isnt a corresponding entry for it in the cross reference pane. As said, there are only a few that are behaving like this.
What could be causing these not to appear in the cross reference pane?
Obviously as they are not appearing in the list of cross references I can't update them, and also, as they are technically broken cross references, because a source exists for them but there is no corresponding entry in the pane, then on export to epub, InDesign crashes (If there is one broken cross reference in a document, export to Epub will crash indesign).
Also, to clarify, in the Word doc if I navigate to a cross reference that is failing once in InDesign, I can update it properly, and also navigate to its destination in the Word doc, so it's not as though these cross references are broken before coming into InDesign. Also I believe the destinations for these "broken" cross references are coming across properly to indesign too as I can see them in the story editor view.
Supposed Cross Reference source selected in Story Editor view on left, but no corresponding cross reference highlighted in pane on right:
    Technical Details:
    InDesign CS5.5 - Version 7.5.3
Microsoft Word 2010, File type .docx

I have found the possible cause of this problem!
If a table is used within the Word document somewhere between where the cross reference source is and its destination then that particular cross reference will be broken as described above in my initial post.
So the "fix" is to remove any occurances of a table in the Word document and the cross references come into InDesign perfectly. This is actually not a fix at all. I need to use tables in the Word document for layout purposes so if they break cross references if they stand between them and their destinations then I have to compromise, i.e. use tables but with no cross references in the document or vice versa.
I found a similar issue recently with index markers in Word causing a shift on the cross reference tags when bought into InDesign. The "fix" again for that was to remove all index markers from the Word document. See post about this here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1043981
InDesign really needs to sort out the issues with importing of Word documents with cross references in them. If I can't use index markers and tables in a Word document without breaking its cross references then they can't claim to have the ability to import a Word document while maintaining its cross references into an InDesign document. It just doesnt work as ive painstakingly proven.

  • Cross References Not Visible in Panel

    Hi all,
I have been enjoying the Cross References functionality in Indesign CS6 to use dynamic text that changes....until recently.
When i first started using them, the Cross References (CR) would be listed in the Hyperlinks/CR panel.
I can create a destination, create a hyperlink to that destination, change what it shows (I am using Paragraph Number) and it works as it should.
The problem i am having is that the CRs are not visible in the Cross Reference panel (the hyperlinks too for that matter)
This means i cant modify my cross references.
Does anyone know why they wouldnt show in the panel? Or is there any other way to see them?
I need to fix this. I have tried resetting the preferences as i found in other posts, but that didnt help

    SOLVED!
The problem appeared to be with my Workspace profile. I changed from my personalised profile to "Interactive for PDF" ( which has the Hyperlinks panel) and it worked. All the Hyperlinks and cross-references show.
I personalised my workspace again with the panels i require and then saved a new workspace with the same name. All works fine after saving a new profile. I am going to take a backup of the workspace file so i can restore it easily if it happens again.

  • Turn off live update of cross references

I'm using Indesign CS6 and javascript.
Is there a way to temporary turn off the 'live update' feature of cross references between separate indesign files?
We find this feature to be a real pain if more than one person is trying to work with the files as it slows everything dramatically.
I've searched through the DOM and Adobe InDesign CS6 (8.0) Object Model JS: Table of Contents but I guess I don't know the right terminology to look for.
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks,

Possibly you have obtained a modified version of Firefox. Preferences, chrome, js or whatever may have been modified.
If work requires you to develop on certain versions, and you are doing some of that on this computer, why not install multiple copies of Firefox, including the required versions. I trust the required versions will be the currently supported versions; at the moment that is 3.6, 6, 7, 8 or 9
You should ensure you use multiple profiles so each has a unique profile.
For the current problematic firefox 6 do a clean install, deleting the original program files, but not the profile files. (or possibly an additional install in a custom location with a new profile - allowing you to retain the current firefox 6, and a standard firefox 6) Profiles may be cloned/copied if required, bookmark libraries may be accessed from other versions/profiles if necessary, and multiple versions can be run concurrently. ( I talk from a Windows perspective, but it is unlikely Linux is going to differ)

  • Updating numbered Cross references crashes InDesign in both CS6 and CS4

I have a large medical journal that has over a hundered references, which I cross-referenced with the thinking that the client may well insert or amend the refernces. I was correct and now the customer has several references to go in I have updated the first in its numbered list at the end and gone to "update cross-refernce" and InDesign crashes. I have tried this in CS6 and CS4 but both crash.

This happens often, particularly with cross-references across documents that are managed with an InDesign book file. One common suggestion, in addition to updating the installed software with the latest patches, is to open all the files in the book before updating; this may or may not always succeed. Search this forum for cross-reference crash to see other suggested solutions.
Some of those posters may mention the commercial third-party Cross-References Plug-in for InDesign, from dtptools.com, and the poster's experience with it. It is reputed to be much more reliable than InDesign's built-in cross-references. It includes an option to convert the ID cross-references to its own, and that's reversible. There's a free trial. There's also a free reader plug-in for users who will need to open and edit documents that contain the plug-in's cross-references. The reader plug-in permits users to edit content in the documents without affecting the cross-references. HOWEVER, to edit or creatge new cross-references, users need the full plug-in.
