Cross-section option sometimes missing on 3D PDFs

I publish 3D PDFs of complex mechanisms for my subscribers. Sometimes Adobe Reader will offer a cross-section option and sometimes not. The 3D PDFx are not made by Acrobat Pro but with an embedded PDF generator inside my mechanical CAD software. I don't make any changes in the way PDFs are generated by the program.
Any ideas?

Good questions. - in addition which version of Acrobat is it, and for Windows or Mac?. I tried a few combinations of making single and multiple cross section with face and non-cross section views on a few files in Acrobat 11 on Windows, and could not see any problem.

Partially missing colours in pdfs

Hi, I'm trying to create some pdfs by using Acrobat 7 (on Windows XP) as a printer (which I am selecting in the program I'm using, a drill hole cross section plotter called Interdex). The printers in my office don't have ARCH E size paper, Adobe does, and I need to make these big enough to plot on large, plotter-style printers.
The problem I'm having involves the colours in the drill holes. At some point, approximately 2/3 of the way across the section, the colours disappear. If you're unfamiliar with drill-hole cross sections, imagine a histogram, turned upside down, where the bars are multicoloured, and on angles. The colours (representing rock types underground) disappear suddenly: one bar has colour at the top, but nothing at the bottom. The line where colour ends is sharp, and perfectly vertical (even though the bar is on a 60 degree angle).
It's not the colours themselves, because all of the missing colours are present elsewhere on the section. It's not that the pdf loses all colour at a certain point, because there is a legend, in colour, past the boundaries of the cross section. If I use a different paper size, there's no problem, but I need to use ARCH E to get the proper scale.
I've attached a very very rough example of the problem. Notice that the colours stop halfway down hole number 3, and that hole number 4 has no colours at all, even though both should be completely filled. The black lines should always be visible, but my hands not that steady when I'm in a hurry. They stay visible, exactly as shown, even when the colours are missing. They represent downhole traces, basically a vector indicating direction and depth of the hole (they are not related to the colours). Text associated with the holes is also unaffacted (e.g., the 4).
Are there known issues using Adobe as a printer, or with certain paper sizes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your client wants local copies, he can right-click on the link
offering the pdf. It will give him the option of saving to his computer.

Place Image option is missing in Acrobat 9

I'm trying to add an image object (jpg image) into a document. Following the instructions to use Advanced Editing>Touchup Object tool, the right clicking, there are no options displayed. The option to "place image" is absent.
This previously functioned, but now it'g gone. Any help??

Security Restrictions of the document are unknown.
The problem was
resolved following an Adobe "repair" procedure, then I re-created the
pdf file by printing it to pdf (the document had a few "typewriter"
objects on it). Starting again from this point, the insert image options
were present upon right click.
My guess is that if there are
typewriter objects on the document, this provides some conflict with the
advanced editing tools. IF this is the case, the "help" sections on
inserting images needs some more helpful info of this nature. Thanks for

Missing Logo in PDF export

Hi all,
I have a problem with an InDesign document when writing PDFs of it:
When exporting a PDF with the built-in export option sometimes a logo (eps) is missing in the PDF output - here some more info:
- the document is now CS 4/Mac, but it was edited in CS 4/Win before and originally it was built in CS 3/Mac
- the logo eps is correctly connected - InDesign never showed a missing link, the eps' colors are the colors of the pdf output (CMYK)
- the logo eps is working perfectly in other documents and even on an other page of the same document
- the problematic logo is placed on a master/template page in this document - when creating new pages using this master page they seem to have the same problem
- when exporting the PDF via .ps and Distiller it seems to work without problems
- in some exported pdf the logo is visible in some it's missing
Anybody ideas? Solutions? My feeling is, that the document might be somehow corrupted. Is there a way to check the integrity of InDesign documents or is there a (software) solution to repair such documents?

Many thanks, unfortunately none of these ideas helped - i tried:
- export to INX and to IDML and reimport in InDesign 4
- placing the Logo as .ai
- duplicating the master page and using this template
... without having the problem solved.
Then I removed all other elements on this page - and then surprisingly the logo now seems to work. What I removed from the page were some Indesign vector elements (an other Logo which had been placed via pasteboard from Illustrator and which did not seem to have any problems so far). Can this be the reason? Are there known problems with vector elements imported via pasteboard (maybe in combination with exporting the document between Mac and WIN or when upgrading a document from CS 3 to CS 4?)

Missing pages in PDF

Hi, I am using Acrobat XI standard, on Windows 7, When I print to Acrobat pages are sometimes missed. It is an intermittent fault.
Anyone got any ideas what is causing this. Your help would be gratefully appreciated.

Some text goes missing in the PDF output after I convert FM8 book

Hi,
I am using Framemaker 8.0, Acrobat 8.0 Professional, Acrobat Distiller 8.0.
When I convert my Framemaker books to PDFs, some text (especially Table Heading tags) go missing in the PDF output. I have tried to change the font colour, change the cell shading, and many other options. But, the problem persists.
I saw some similar links on the forums with this kind of problems. For example,

After going through these links from the forums, I realized that this is a known issue. But, the above links direct me to Microsoft patches and these patches are available only for Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, and Windwos Vista operating systems. My operating system is Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit version.
One more thing I want to say is we have never faced this problem earlier. It started appearing now.
While I know that the world (many of us) moved on to Framemaker 9 and 10, I also know that there is someone out there to help me to overcome this issue.

Thanks for your response.
We tried this option also. In fact, the Distiller shows this option by default. Secondly, we have recently updated our old template to reflect the new corporate styles and we suspect something went wrong there. We once again took the old template and updated with the new colour definitions and fonts, this time very carefully and it started working. Now, the text is not missing.
So, the result is something is wrong with our template. Quite surprising is it is inconsistent and some places the text appears and some places it does not.
Where do you work? Are you in India?

Option to Print as a pdf, save as a PDF, etc. is gone from Print window....

Hi-don't know what happened but when I bring up the Print window, I no longer have the option button to Save as PDF, Mail PDF, etc. The only button in that area is the Supplies button. I did an erase and install a few weeks ago and installed all updates but it seems I am missing a part of something! Anybody else have this issue? Hope someone can tell me how to bring this back-I use it all the time! Judy

Try reinstalling your printer drivers and restart your Mac.
You might also try deleting your printer preference file.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. You should have a file like this...
com.yourprintermanufacturename.plist
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, try disconnecting and reconnecting your printer from your Mac.

How to make Geological Cross Sections in Adobe Illustrator?

I have been tasked with producing a geological cross section in Adobe Illustrator. It is a lengthy process, as I am new to the software. I never learned it in my GIS studies. I know that there is plenty of GIS software out there to produce x sections automatically (we have Petrel for example), but they want it done in Adobe Illustrator as it's not a data driven x section.
Does anyone have any familiarity with doing such a thing? I am having to basically use the cutting tool to divide up a box into the sedimentary layers. Then I fill the cut shapes with the correct colour. Complications arise, however:
I have to show wavy lines between some sedimentary layers to indicate a gap, or layers which aren't shown. I am using the distortion tool to automatically produce the wavy line, which means I need to:
a. copy/paste the original area
b. change the appearance so there is no fill, delete all strokes except the one which will turn into the wavy line, apply distortion
c. copy/paste the original area
d. change the appearance so there is no fill, delete the stroke that will turn into the wavy line, change stroke to black line
This means I have 3 elements whenever there is a part of the cross section showing a wavy line:
the area which has a fill but no stroke,
the wavy line (derived from the area by deleting the fill and strokes which aren't wavy),
the rest of the stroke around the area.
Does anyone know of a faster way to do such a thing?
I wish I could just draw a shape using some sort of line tool and AI would detect when there is a closed off area so I could then select a colour fill.
Another problem is the cutting tool does not make it easy to produce matching curves:
In this image you can see that there is a wrinkle across many sedimentary layers, but my cutting skills in Illustrator mean that the lines do not follow a nice uniform shape. Of course this is the case in the real world as well, although at the moment the image has a bit too much of a 'hand drawn' look to it. Part of the problem is that the cutting tool, usually helpfully, smooths out the cut line as one goes (digitising a smooth curve with a mouse is impossible!). Sometimes this smoothing has undesired effects. It would be good to know if I can apply an offset to another line when cutting.
Is it right that I should be using the cutting tool as my primary way of setting up a x section, anyway?
I'm thinking a better way to do all of this would be to somehow have a tool that enables me to select vertices across multiple lines in sedimentary layers, then drag them up or down. This would then apply the same amount of curve across the layers.

Once you've set up your Pattern Swatches, this should take only a few minutes:

There are several Libraries of pre-built Pattern Swatches you can load. Or you can create your own if none of the provided ones are what you want. The help files will show you the basics of creating a Pattern Swatch. Create one for each different pattern you want in the strata. Select the rectangle and the paths. Get the Live Paint Tool. Set the current Fill to one of the Patterns. Click between two of the strata lines. The selected objects will be converted to a so-called LivePaint Group, and you can proceed to apply other Pattern Swatches to the various areas.
The Shape Builder tool can then be used to trim away the outboard portions of the strata lines, back to where they intersect the rectangle.

Cross Sections in 9

Dear All,
is it possible to have more then one cross section in a view?
According to table 9.39 in the PDF Reference there may be an array of cross section dictionaries
per view.
Does it suggest that the feature is there but I just do not know how to use it or multiple cross sections are planed for but not implemented yet?
BTW, there are two entries in cross section dictionary that Acrobat uses but I can not find documentation for: ST and PV.
The first seems to make half of the model transparent instead of cutting it off.

The 3D annotation type in Acrobat and Adobe Reader only supports one active cross section plane at a time.

How come the switch user option is missing from my lock screen?

I upgrade to Lion my iMac Core 2 Duo and now when I lock the screen the switch user option is missing from the lock screen, you just have to cancel o renter as the original user, so that if another member of my family wants to switch and use the mac he or she cannot do it.

The switch user option is totaly absent, I just have the cancel.
It that a bug or what?
Please note this happens only when I lock the screen from the screensaver, i.e. requesting the password to restart from the screensaver, if I get to the login windows all users appears correctly and people can switch back and forth.

I just talked to apple support. They said Lion doesn't support this feature. They gave me a work-around, which was to disable requiring a password in the screen saver. Then enable user switching so it appears in the top right of the banner. Note that since the screen saver no longer locks the screen, in order to actually lock the screen the user must click on the upper right user list and select something like "Login user...".
This issue has left me disappointed with apple for a few reasons. Hopefully someone at apple will take note:
1. Apple removed a useful feature.
2. Apple did not provide a response to this thread which would have been the best forum to inform users of this change. It would have saved me and apple one long phone call.
