Crossed out Circle... kernal panic... help, about to throw away computer
Slowly but surely my 15" Powerbook G4 was dying and it may be done forever, but I'm trying on last time. My computer froze and when I hard restarted I just got a blank gray screen (no apple image, no working indicator).
I put in Leopard CD and tried to boot from that disk. It slowly... and I mean slowly started up the disk and I eventually found my way into Disk Utility to try and first aid repair the HDD. I got to it and it basically said I couldn't complete the repair (something wrong, i don't know).
I tried then just installing Leopard again from the disk resolved that I don't care if I lose all the info that was there. But when I try to choose a volume to install to the HDD has an exclamation point on it. I can't choose it to install to. Went back to disk utility to look for disk and HDD volume name doesn't appear any longer, can't even try to repair it.
I put in Disk Warrior and tried to boot to it but just got kernal panic stuff all on my screen ending with an "error: we are hanging here". Repeated but never could boot to Disk Warrior.
Put back in Leopard disk and tried booting back to that, but now I can't get that to boot. I get a gray screen with a crossed out circle and the working sign which never goes away.
So basically I can't boot to anything including the Leopard CD.
I don't mind losing everything on the HDD. I just want to wipe things clean and start over. Any thoughts?
I downloaded the AHT and burned it to a disc. When I put it in the computer and boot to it a screen comes up that says "invalid memory access at.." then a bunch of stuff.
Goes on to say what kind of computer it is, some copyright info, the system time with a "welcome to open firmware" and tells me to type either "mac-boot" or "shut-down" the prompt area is preceded by a "0 >"
I typed mac-boot and it went to a screen with the folder/finder/question mark flashing thing, all the while the cd drive keeps spinning up and down. I'm assuming it's looking to boot somewhere but I can't.
Is there anything else I can do from this 'open firmware' prompt area? Kind of a cool place. Like I found a secret portal on my computer. I typed in "global thermonuclear war" but it didn't do anything.

Help!! I'm in Belize (not a good place to be with an Apple, as international as you may claim to be!) and my computer decided to "quit" thusly:
White screen with a crossed out circle which flickers to the Apple logo sometimes, but won't open. What can I do to open it? (I do have my recently backed up data with me, but no loading discs for my computer.
Hoping there is a solution,
DianaThe make of the disk doesn't really tell us how your data is being backed up onto that disk. Do you know what software it uses?
For example Time Machine copies files every hour in a way that is not bootable, but you can extract those files & get all your data back into a working OS.
Carbon Copy Cloner duplicates a disk in a way that is bootable - it would appear when holding alt at startup so you could use that to boot & inspect the state of the internal disk.
It may also be Seagate's own software that does something different.
Please try recovery mode, if that works you can try repairing the disk in Disk Utility.
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
If that works, select Disk Utility & see if the internal disk can be repaired in the first aid tab.
Recovery mode can also download OS X & reinstall it, however you really need to know if the backup contains everything before that is attempted, otherwise you may lose data. The OS is also around 5GB so you may have issues if your internet is capped or unstable etc.
P.S.
I have no idea if this is helpful, but there may be help out there…?

Search & ask around, you may find some help, try recovery mode first. -
The laptop turns on fine but the apple logo come up flashing the logo, a question mark, and a crossed out circle. How do I fix this?
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk.
If that didn't help, try here > A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
The ? mark on boot can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from, hence booting while holding down the Option key, or the startup disk needs repairing. -
Crossed out circle on boot - new SSD
Hi, I hope you can help.
I'll be referring to two different disks:
A HDD sitting in a optibay, which i'm currently running OSX Lion from, and
A fresh SSD in the mainbay.
1. SSD failed one day, so I got a new one.
2. New SSD didn't show up, so I switched SATA-cable out.
3. SSD showed up.
4. Erased to mac os journaled, reinstalled Snow Leopard from disk.
5. Did System update, and tried to install Mountain Lion.
6. ML gave message: "Can't install, error with SSD, can't repair"-ish.
7. Booted me back into HDD, now with a new system language??
8. Reformatted SSD. (Didn't partition)
9. Installed new Snow Leopard.
10. Installation completed, but on reboot i get the crossed out circle.
What could possible be wrong?
Thanks,A Intel 520 series 120 gb SSD. (I'd like to note, that this worked for 4 months prior to error)
I'm booting from the SuperDrive, that I've put in an external exclosure.
Just 5 minutes ago, the Mac decided to boot into the SSD and it showed me the welcome-video to Snow Leopard. I have no clue on how this happened, since I had it boot into the HDD just half an hour ago.
Should i try cloning the system+apps from the HDD to SSD? If the Snow Leopard system-cd is corrupted? -
Upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 to montain lion on a iMac system won't boot getting a crossed out circle
Clean install OS.10.6.8 update it completly. May be you ignored some firmware update.
I have two incedents.
My thunderbolt port stopped working after upgrading to ML 10.8. I booted from external 10.6 , 10.7 still didnt work. Then i clean installed 10.6.8 and ran software update it updated the thunderbolt firmware and all is well now. This firmware update for some reason didnt show up in ML 10.8.
Secondly , when i upgraded my Brother's Macbook from 10.5 to 10.6.3 it would install but stuck with crossed out circle. Then i downgraded checked for update found an efi update , then the 10.6.3 worked fine. -

Kernal Panic Help with Macbook Pro 2010
Hello fellow Kernal Panic enthusiasts.
I've had random panics more frequently on a Macbook Pro 2010. I've tried correcting permissions, resetting PRAM etc. It seem to happen at random, sometimes with flash (which has been disabled by default) in Chrome. Other occasions its completely random when using the finder, etc. Chrome crashes frequently, and again at random. Same happens for Firefox and Safari – it seems to be whichever I am using most frequently There's no way to repeat the panic.
Thank you for the help/suggestions in advance.

Pace is a copy protection software for some third party program your running, it's for Snow Leopard and this issue has appeared here before and once today even.
Quark Inc was here about their driver, so check them for a update.
Take note of the softwares above, your going to be reinstalling some of them from fresh sources and updating.
Run through the Steps 1-8 here and see if that solves your problem.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Disable all at login/boot softwares.
Yes some third party software mentioned above is not going to work as #8 Reinstall Just OS X will kick their parts out of OS X itself (but not out of Applications), but what you do is reinstall them one at a time, when it's been updated and verified to work with your OS X verison. (uninstall using the developers program or instructions, do not use AppDelete type software)
Take your time and if problems come back you know it's the last one installed is at fault.
The object with #1-8 is to make sure machine and OS X is fine, then decide from there what third party software is at fault.
If your problems continue despite the above software not being run or installed, then proceed with the further Steps #9-16 in the hunt for the real cause.
Chrome has been known to cause problems around here, it runs a root level updater for all Google software, it's hard to remove and one has to not use any Google software to prevent it being reinstalled.
Good luck in your process of elimination. -
Kernal panic: help me solve the mystery.
Hey-oh.
I've got a kernal panic on my hands. It's happened about half a dozen times this afternoon and I don't know what is triggering it. Just wanted to start this thread to see if anyone could help spot what is up. The screen gets dark and the restart dialogue box appears. I shut down, restart and while the loading bar on the white Apple screen takes about 5 minutes to fully load before telling me an error happened and giving me a crash report. The reports seem to be sending fine.
I installed new RAM myself a few weeks ago and that has been working great. I only ended up doing that because I kept getting serious RAM errors (3 beeps, black screen) with the Apple installed RAM. So far, not a great experience with my iMac
Here's the most recent crash report:

Chrome has been crashing today so I thought it might be that but it's still happening when Firefow is the only browser running. Tried closing as many apps as I could and have just deleted a few most recently installed unimportant programs.
If you see anything suspicious in the report then let me know. In the time being I'm going to try the other suggested courses of action. Posting this hastily before it happens again.
Thanks,

10.6.7 + Aperture 3.1.1 = Kernal Panic - Help Please!
Since upgrading to 10.6.7 I've had two kernal panics when using Aperture. The following is the KP report. Any thoughts on what's happening?
FWIW, I've also been having freezes in one of my user accounts that seem pretty random.
Thanks.

G4 kernal panic help interpretting please
Hello All
Our old family G4 quicksilver 867 machine is dying. I am hoping its something other than the drives as we just upgraded to a mac pro (before i could migrate the data) machine has 2 drives internally and both have installs of 10.3 and 10.4 repectively.
here are the steps i have tried
1 inserted panther disks into dvd but this is the message i got trying to startup by holding c key during startup and the image below is the message during that startup proceedure.
2 previously i tried to place machine in target mode to obtain as much data as possible. i managed to target the older drive and get photos but not all the files i wanted ( the second drive did not show up in target mode) also it took several tries to get the target mode to work at all. Having gotten the photos I wanted to try getting the newer system drive to work so i have swapped the drives in the bay and switched the power and drive connection ribbons with no luck and so have switched back but could not get target mode to work again so i attempted the DVD drive start up.
TIA
phi
here is a copy of the kernal panic.Whoops disks are from a different machine- and the target mode tip sorted me out right away! I switched bays before but forgot to switch the jumpers on the drive. So now all is better in terms of getting my old data as the target mode is working and the drive is transfering to the new machine as we speak.
Thanks so much and Happy holidays
Now just to figure out why the ? on start up - Hmm? I'm hoping the old g4 can still be of some use to the kids. -
G4 powerbook - Kernal Panic Help please...
Hi
It would seem reading through the posts that I have a Kernal Panic as my powerbook is showing all the signs of this problem.
I usually only use my powerbook for working, incase anything like this ever happens, but I was browsing through the games and screensavers on mac downloads and I downloaded Ifish screensaver which required something called GROWL and a widget game called MACPINBALL which also required a download and a restart straight after installation, subsequently the Panic problem started.
The Mac will not boot up for very long but I managed to trash the games and the growl application, however I think that maybe the MACPINBALL widget installed something that may be causing the problem, any ideas what this could be?
I am away from home visiting family at the moment so I do not have my Apple install disks but I really need the laptop to be working so can anyone offer me any advice? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks in advance, god I wish I hadn't installed those bloomin stupid app's.Hi There
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
No I do not have any external devices attached and I have managed to get into disk utility to repair the permissions, since doing this I have restarted in safe mode and It woked ok without getting the restart message for approx 15 mins. I then restarted it normally and I got the restart message straight away, I restarted and then it didnt even boot, it just made a loud and worrying whirring noise, so I have turned it off!
any more questions then please get straight back to me. Thanks! -

Help with Kernal Panic; "You need to restart your computer..." on startup
My sister just gave me her old iBook G4. I don't know what OS it is running and I don't know the exact model beyond iBook G4. She is currently looking for the disks that came with it.
Everytime I try to start the computer, before I get past the screen with the apple, the screen goes grey and I get the following message:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Are there any diagnostics I can run without the discs that came with the computer? What should my first steps be? Is there any way to tell what OS or hardware I'm using without being able to boot up?
Thanks,
BrettHi Brett and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You could try Starting up in Safe Mode
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup
Safe boot may by-pass the problematic process/hardware (the airport card is a frequent culprit) and enable you to boot sufficiently to find out the OS. Click on the blue Apple top/left, then 'About this Mac'. If Safe Boot is successful take a look at Macintosh HD/Library/Logs, particularly Console and Panic. I'm no expert on deciphering logs but you could copy/past the last couple of paragraphs of Panic into a reply.
Good luck,

Hello,
I cannot find a fix for this. I have been doing research off and on for a week or so. Any ideas or directions in which to point me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Please help - about to throw heavy 8 core out window
I had been using FCP 5 on my iMac for nearly 2 years. I have exported via Quicktime conversion, and straight to Compressor with no real problems with speed.
I have a large encoding job to get done, so i upgraded and got Dual Quad 2.8 with 4 gb of RAM. I also upgraded to FCP Studio 6.
Encoding times for H.264 are taking longer than on my iMac by a long time. A 15 second test file running through single pass H.264 encode is taking 4 minutes. It took 45 seconds on my iMac!
I've tried setting up the cluster using 4 instances, I've tried using "this computer only". I've tried with and without frame controls for interlacing. I've tried creating reference movies and importing into compressor. I've tried exporting straight from FCP. I've tried un and re-installing the software.
I'm dying here. Have spent a ton of cake and feel like throwing this thing out the window. I've googled until my fingers turned blue looking for suggestions. I'm in serious need of help.
Please, oh Mac FCP gurus, lay your knowledge down on me! I can provide specific settings and specs as needed!
Please!
MikeDid you try the exact same media file when comparing your iMac against your Mac Pro? Keep in mind that different media is handled differently.
If you are using any frame controls for your H.264 multi-pass transcodings in Compressor, have a look at this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7309534#7309534
As Brian Gary mentiones in that MacBreak video, maxing out your instances in Qmaster is not necessarily the best thing to do when trying to make use of a virtual cluster.
