Crossfade broken in 6.0.4, 1.3ghz iBook?

I use my iBook at my studio, mostly to play music and for some light browsing/email. It's been great, except now that I've upgraded to 6.0.4, crossfading doesn't work. What happens is that the song abruptly ends before the song's natural ending -- there is a little pause, and then the next song starts. This is pretty disconcerting. I've since turned off crossfade off but that has revealed another issue. It still appears that the songs are being clipped about 2 seconds from the end, plus, when the next song starts, I hear about a quarter second, then a half second pause, and then it starts again. The only other app running is Safari (well, also Terminal and Top), my system is running at 60-75% idle (plenty of headroom on the processor, I have loads of free memory too). However, when a song transition occurs, the processor use goes up pretty high to the point only 30% is idle, then to 70% idle while the gap in song starting occurs, then 30% idle when the song starts up a second time before returning to 70% idle.
Anyway, is anyone else having a similar experience on similar hardware? I'm thinking I'll go back to 6.0.3 if others are also having problems. If not, maybe I have an issue peculiar to this machine.

Problem solved. What was happening is that I downloaded some music from emusic -- it doesn't come w/ album art. I also had the lyrics widget set to download album art if there isn't any. So the skipping was being caused in songs when the album art was being downloaded and saved. So it wasn't an itunes issue at all, just an issue of pegging the processor and disk r/w ability.

  • Home laser printer printing questions

    Hi,
I want to by a laser printer for home. Heed help from those who have experience:
I have local network, so I can either use USB with print server or network printer. I found that CUPS drivers are required for network printing (print server) in OS X. Is it true? Are there other caveats? Network ready printers are more expensive.
I need to print maps, like orienteering maps. Will 600x600 dpi be sufficient?
There is a photopaper for laser printers in the local computer store. However, people say that cheap laser printers will not produce smooth gradient of halftones. What quality can I expect from laser printer + photopaper (designed for laserprints)?
Does postscript support influence quality? There are OS X compatible printers (have OS X driver) that seem to use PCL or just emulate postscript, is it essential?
    Thank you for any input.

    Thank you for the input
I'd expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $400 to have a nice home laser printer
I have color and b/w printers at work and most of my reading can be fit into my duties as I am a researcher at the university. I need to print last minute materials, mostly schemes/maps or addresses when I am off to some trip. I think that with the infrequent load the ink will get dry in an ink printer and the price of ink scares me too. I expect $200
It may have USB, but Ethernet would be a must for may list.
Why? I have an older Mac with OS X, it can serve the printer to the outer world. What are the caveats? If it gets broken I can connect USB printer anywhere (iBook).
I wouldn't use it to print photo-grade images with.
Have you tried photopaper for laser printers??
All "applications" produce postscript output. Drivers, when required, convert
the postscript to the page language required for the specific printer model
(like PCL for many HP printers, or ESC P/2 for many Epsons, etc). Postscript
printers all have a postscript interpreter built into the hardware - to take
input and create an image of the printed page.
I was thinking if a printer has a postscript interpeter, and OSX is sending
data to it from the open application, doesn't that mean OSX is sending
postscript data to the printer since it touches the data last as it leaves the
    Mac?
I think, that there are printers that understand PS and that means that you can send PS file to the printer in a raw mode (lpr -l) and it will be printed. In the same way there are PCL printers that you can send raw PCL file to. PCL file is a usual windows .prn file when you “print to file” on HP printer. The GDI printer understand no language, so that all should be passed through the driver (and GDI will work with OS X or Linux only if there is a driver for OS X).
Here I repeat my Q: I heard that PCL overoptimize PS data upon conversion and thus reduce the print quality. Is it true?
I recently bought a Brother HL-2040 to be shared at a lab at school. I got it
in part because it comes with CUPS drivers. I already had a very old and
cheap print server, and I'm able to print to it from PCs and OS X Macs in the
lab, via LPD or appletalk. It's 600x600 dpi and excellent quality - we only
use plain paper. I think it would be good for orienteering, too. Pretty darn
    good for a $100 printer!
Thank you. I also though that 600x600 will be sufficient. Is this 1200x1200 a sort of marketing trick?

  • How do i add new fonts that i've downloaded?

    easy question.. sorry.
i downloaded a lot of freebies, now how do i install them to be ready to use in word?
    thanks.

    Hi, Danielle.
Actually, before using Font Book as suggested, you should set its preferences accordingly. This lets you specify whether you want fonts installed by default in your Home > Library > Fonts folder (User Collection) or the Macintosh HD > Library > Fonts folder (Computer Collection). This is important.
Fonts installed in the User collection are only available to your account. Fonts installed in the Computer collection are available to all user accounts on your Mac.
You can then use Font Book to preview a font you've downloaded and decide if you want to install it. Double clicking an uninstalled font presents you with a Preview. If you click Install, Font Book will then install it according to the settings you made in its preferences.
You can also use Font Book to validate new fonts before you install them. In Font Book, select File > Validate File..., then use the resulting navigation dialog to select the fonts you are thinking about installing. This prevents problems that might be caused by installing a corrupted or incompatible font. If you simply add the font to your Home > Library > Fonts folder as suggested earlier without first validating it, you could install a corrupted or incompatible font. Better to know the fonts are good first.
    Good luck!

  • OSX 10.4.5 - power failure - had to reload system

Twice now I've had power failures which have required reloading the OS - both times has been with 10.4 (okay, I finally bought a UPS) - but I'd still like to know what was wrong....
    Symptons -
After the power failure - I started the system - it seemed to go through a normal startup - except that it reached a point where the cursor was on the screen and could even be moved with my trakball - the screen was solid blue (not any kind of background picture - just solid blue).
I could connect remotely from another Mac - work and save files across the network. The CD eject button on the keyboard worked.
Still no login (and so no desktop).
So I put the 10.4 orig disk in the drive - restarted with 'c' depressed and reloaded the OS - then did a 120MB upgrade to get it back up to current version.
I don't think I'll see this problem again (with UPS) - most power failures are momentary.
But I sure would like to know what's wrong.
Is there some configuration information that's kept with a battery (and battery is going out)? System is 4+ years old. Is this a problem with 10.4? Power failures were never a problem with earlier versions of OSX - except from sleep mode - when I had to open the system and push a button to reset something. That didn't resolve this problem.
This latest power failure happened with the system up and running.
    Thank you.

    Hi, Ken.
    1. You wrote: "the screen was solid blue (not any kind of background picture - just solid blue)."That can indicate that the outage corrupted a Startup or Login Item, or a related cache on which such depends.
As to post-power failure troubleshooting, see my recent post here.
As macjack notes, power outages can cause all sorts of havoc, so much so that I have an entire chapter — "Protecting Against Power Problems" — in my book, including how a UPS works, selecting the right size UPS, surge protection, etc.
    2. You wrote: "Is there some configuration information that's kept with a battery (and battery is going out)? System is 4+ years old."If your Mac has an internal battery, aka a "backup battery", the battery provides an infinitesimal amount of power to retain setting in PRAM and NVRAM. At 4+ years old, it's not a bad idea to replace the internal battery. See "Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers, Part 2."
To purchase a replacement battery, Radio Shack is usually the easiest place to find them. Batteries Plus is another chain of stores that carry unusual batteries. You can also try searching PriceWatch using the part number as your search criteria to look for the battery online.
    3. FYI: I suggest you update your profile to show the specific Mac model you have, i.e. something more specific than simply "G4" since that covers a lot of ground. Having that info up-front can help others help you faster. Click the "My Settings" link in the upper-right corner of this page in the "Welcome kenmc" box and add the specific model. You'll note mine states I have two Macs:
    "PM G5 Dual 2.3GHz, iBook 700, more!"
where PM = Power Mac, the large desktop line. Some use PB to abbreviate PowerBook. The more specific, the better.
    Good luck!

  • Powerbook sleep problem

I own a powerbook G4 al (15") and I also have a sleep problem: my powerbook won't go to sleep when I close the lid or when i selectd Stop from the Apple menu.
Now, this wasn't happening in panther (10.3.9) nor in tiger until 10.4.2. I have installed updates one by one from 10.4 and found out that update 10.4.3 had something to do with my problem (doesn't matter if I use Software Updates or if i use combo updates).
I tried repairing permission, resetting the various nvram, pmu, ... but without success.
Also updated to 10.4.4 but the problem remain.
I installed 10.4.2 on another partition and there everything is working fine.
What is different in os x 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 from 10.4.2 that could cause this?
    Every suggestion is welcome!!!

    Hi.
    Hmmm...
    1. You wrote: "-in my other partition (system 10.4.2) i can run the maintenance script (via terminal, launchd etc), after updating to 10.4.3 an error is reported (file non found etc)"What is the exact text of the message (in English, please ;-)).
    2. You wrote: "(i read somewhere that those maintenance scripts could solve my sleep problem, so i tried them)"That information is incorrect. The maintenance scripts merely prune and rotate a collection of log files. If a rogue process is constantly writing messages to one of the Console logs, that can prevent idle sleep, which is why I asked about Canon and HP peripherals.
    3. OK, so there's no scanner or printer. Are there any peripherals attached? PC Cards (nee PCMCIA cards) installed?
    4. Here's some things to try:4.1 First, As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This will rule out some common troublemakers.
4.1 Trash all preferences related to Energy Saver:4.1.1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
4.1.2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
You'll probably be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
    4.1.3. Empty the Trash.
4.1.4. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.4.3. See if a rogue Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.5. Not sure exactly what model of PowerBook you have, but if it is one of the "Double-Layer SD" models see:
    - "Don't move a PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD) for a moment after putting it to sleep"; and
    - "About the PowerBook G4 sleep indicator light status."
    Good luck!

i use mac osx 10.4.4 with an imac. i use intego netbarrier and virusbarrier programs for computer security, in addition to the mac os firewall.
my concern is that some future keylogger or trojan may be able to detect my login password. i am not aware of any keyloggers for mac osx. i have heard that numberous trojans and keyloggers exist for wintel (even one which can provide a screenshot). however, i would like to protect my passwords from any potential keylogger trojan. my question is: does the potential exist for a future keylogger to detect my log-in password? or is it technically impossible for a trojan to detect a password during log-in because the internet connection is not online?

sure it's possible to get a trojan with a keylogger, but it's far more likely that if it's a trojan it'll just use your password within the system rather than sending it back to anyone, here is a good program for scanning for keyloggers, spyware and other such gunk http://macscan.securemac.com/

    I'd kill for 256 kbps
Without knowing how you created the USB installer, it's hard for me to say. If you did it correctly your computer should be able to boot from the USB and everything ought to be easy to figure out from there. If that isn't happening, I'd say it's not worth pursuing.
Did you try to boot with Startup Assistant? Try restarting your computer while holding an Option key. If the USB is an option it will appear, but since you already got the "broken folder" icon after a normal boot I can only assume it will not appear.

  • Ripple delete broken? - Serious issue

SO ive spent the last 2 weeks finalising a project up in preparation for mastering, and yesterday right before i exported it i dropped in a 2 sec. black video at the start of the timeline and then rippled everything back into place.
Now, im half in this mess because i didnt check, and im half in this mess because something simple that SHOULD work every time DOESNT work.
The end result after the ripple delete is that every single one of my transitions and audio crossfades disappeared from my 27 minute project (and there were a lot)
From a brief browse of the internet it appears this problem has existed since PPRO1.5 and nothings been done about it.
Seriously guys, you all get paid a ton of money to write the software, if something as simple as Ripple Delete is broken and can f**k my project if im not careful then REMOVE IT, Before some other poor soul accidentally loses 2 weeks work and looks like an idiot when they cant present the master to their client on time.
Im off to spend the rest of my day putting disolves back in my project, i suggest you (adobe) spend yours and fix this ridiculous bug, lest you lose your market share to apples final cut.

to be honest i wouldnt have a clue how it has the same issue
i guess youd have to ask how premier deleted all of my transitions in the first place then we might be closer to an answer
id love to know if this is an issue that can be avoided in the future, if theres someone out there thats experienced the same problem
the previous workaround i found didnt help me at all so ive had to resort to manually putting back all of the transitions
and, craig ill blame the tools if the tools are crap
if i was hammering nails and the hammer magically removed all the nails from the wall while i was out getting lunch then there would clearly be an issue with the hammer, no?

  • No POST. motherboard broken? p43 neo-f

About half a year ago i started having problems:
    Hdd slowly stopped working
    External hdd stopped working
Artifacting on 2d windows graphics but not in games
Pc sometimes not giving POST beeps and not starting up.
Now a month ago it stopped booting at all. No post. Just fans spinning up
    And no video.
I removed all parts except processor, mainboard and power supply, but still no POST or video.
I want  to know how to fix it or know what component is broken so i can replace it.
    Specs:
E8500 core 2 duo intel processor (don't know if correct type. It was 3ghz)
    MSI p43 neo-f
    Xfx 896 D3 x Nvidia gtx260
    4gb of memory. I can't remember which.
    Psu: ocz stealthxstream 600w atx2
I've always been using a nonearthed power socket if that matters.

a Decent single rail 400W would power your build but I would suggest a 500W one to be safe and leave some room for it to Age as its used and 600W if you plan to use it on a new computer in the future if your current one is no longer what you want and plan to upgrade!
possibly the PSU if it has died may have taken out your motherboard and CPU and Possibly RAM but only trying it will let you know for sure! also i would suggest that you have a look at the motherboards Capacitors for any that are bulging or leaking as thats usually a good sign the motherboard has totally given in or soon will!

  • HT1688 I have a damaged I-Phone and I need the contents of my calendar off of it. I did not have Mobile me at the time.  Can I swap out the sim card from the broken phone to a new phone and recover this calendar?

I have an older I-Phone (3G) that for some reason the body of the phone has split in two.  This phone was a business phone and it had a lot of important information on it. I have a second phone that is also a 3G.  On the broken phone there is a lot of important information that I need in my calendar. Im not worried about anything else but the calendar.  I didn't have the Mobile Me account at that time or I would be having this problem. Does anybody know if I can ust switch out the sim cards. I just need to recover the old calendar, so im hoping that the calendar will transfer when I switch the sim card into the good 3G. If that doesn't work does anybody know of anyway that I can retrieve this information off of this phone?

Nothing is stored on the sim card on an iPhone.  If you backed up to your computer the backup will contain your calendar events.  Otherwise, if your phone isn't functioning there is no way to back up or extract your calendar at this point.

  • HT1384 My lock screen/power button on my iPod Touch is broken, and I need some assistance.

As the title suggests, I can not use the lock screen/power button on my iPod Touch, it is broken. I can use Adaptive Touch to turn the screen on and off at will, and also turn my device off. But if I turn it off, I don't know how to get it to turn back on. Could I just plug it into a charger and turn it back on, or would I need to plug it into my computer? Please help, in a few days I won't have access to it for 9 weeks, I need immediate help.

If you power off the iPod, it will turn back on if you connect it to a charger like a wall charger or a computer. I just checked with a charging source to confirm. I knew it did it with a computer.
