Crossgrade to FCP Universal

Getting an Intel Mac Pro, so we need the Final Cut Studio crossgrade - we have to return the original FCP install disks; will the replacement universal FCP install ok on a Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5, our current Mac, if we ever need to reinstall?

Yep, the universal binary is exactly that: it installs on both Intel and PPC hardware.
I know because that's what I have.

  • CrossGrade from FCP 3 to FCE 3.5?

Is it possible to crossgrade from FCP 3.0 to the new FCE 3.5? I've been using my old version of FCP from the pre-FCE days, and would only need to continue on using FCE on my new MacBookPro.
    regards,
    Michael.

Not acceptable that you can't cross grade Apple products.

  • FCP Universal Crossgrade

DEEPLY unhappy. I own a Macbook Pro, live in the UK and want to get a universal version of FCP. I look on the website and get the only crossgrade form has a US address. We phone Apple UK to ask if there is a UK address. Answer; "no, you have to send it to the US." So we bundle up all our master disks and send them registered mail to the US. Three weeks later we get them back with a note saying "this offer is only available within the 50 United States"
erm...sorry? What the ****? Not very universal is it....

    where were you looking?
did you check here on the UK page for Apple

  • FCP Universal Crossgrade - still waiting

I sent mine crossgrade form out 5 days ago, so I'm hoping they will come in soon. I tried to check the status of my crossgrade online but I don't appear to be in their systems yet.
Anyone have a number that I can reach a "person" to ask about the status? Opposed to the automated number on the form that has general information not concerning the Crossgrade.
It's not easy being left in the dark with my FCP cd's out there and my new MacBook Pro coming in next week. I need my disks!
    Thanks,
    -Paul West

Mine took awhile to be updated in their system and I sent the form and disc out via overnight service. I checked the tracking (shipment) information and saw that it had been received, but I was not on the website yet. It took about 3 days for my info to show up on the website, so you have to allow them sometime.
If you sent out your form and disc via standard service (5-7 days), add an additional 3 days for your info to post. Then another week after your status changes to shipped. It took about 2 weeks for me to get my discs from the day I sent the form to the day I received the package.

  • Quicktime export from FCP universal, audio export function

Hey there, I just recently bought the 17 inch mac book pro and did the crossgrade swap to the latest version of FCP studio.
Doing my first complete video edit and DVD project and am at the export stage.
I am doing what I normally do on my dual 2.5 g5 and setting and IN point and an OUT point in FCP and exporting using quicktime.
Just as the defaults, (I do this and have done this dozens and dozens of times)
I do this, then I import that file (after FCP is done into compressor and go from there)
we all know the export using compressor thing isnt ready for primetime..
anyway, doing this and after the first dialgo box is done and it seems the whole thing is done...then a box comes up saying its exporting AUDIO and its going to take 4 hours!
I didnt choose this extra step, the default quicktime export dealy (not "using quicktime conversion) had all this covered I thought...I mean, it has every other time on the OTHER computer)
I canceled this and checked my resulting exported file (the quicktime one) and all the audio and video is intact..
but the process I cancelled bothers me...any ideas?
    thanks so much

    > sorry I am all over the place info wise maybe
No problem - we all find it hard to explain things clearly when we're frustrated by problems like this!
Well that's strange - but at least it's clear what's happeneing now!
I'm at a loss really but if it were me, I'd trash the preferences and repair permissions, then if that didn't work, I'd create a new project in FCP and transfer the clips over. Sometimes this can iron out strange bugs.
Failing all, I'd create a new ID on my Mac and work from there - but if this works, then Jerry's advice regarding the clean install is a must, really.
Another thing I'd try is exporting direct through Compressor - it's a wonderful tool and you really should get to know it. It would be worth using Compressor to export a QT movie to see whether it makes any difference.
Is the full project on the G5 as well as the MBP?

  • FCP Universal

Just a quick question - apart from its Intel compatability, is there any difference between the my FCP 5.0 PowerPC install DVDs and the Universal install DVDs? Would I need to upgrade if I have no intention of getting an Intel mac?
    Thanks

The new features are listed here...

I suggest the cross-grade , the auto reconnect improvements and MM fixes alone would be worth the $49.00.

  • Crossgrade from FCP 4

I am trying to get some help, but no one at Apple can help me so far. I sent in my FCP 4 disks, check, and order form. The check cleared back on 12/12/06. I have a copy of the deposited check into an Apple BoA account. I haven't gotten my disks and no FCS 2 is out. Does anyone know who to contact that can actually resolve this issue for me, so I can get my crossgrade?

Call AppleCare.... fax them the copy of the paperwork you have... they'll fix you up I'll wager. 1-800-myapple
If they don't DEFINITELY post back... Enquiring minds want to know...
Also... FCS 2 isn't out yet... it's just being previewed... it's due to ship may 31... Nevertheless, you should get what you've paid for from Apple.

  • FCP Crossgrade: just what do you get?

    Hello,
I've got a copy of DVD Studio Pro 4, so I plan to crossgrade to Studio Universal. My question is, EXACTLY what do you get?
Do you get a shrinkwrapped box containing disks and manuals? Do you get a new serial number, or do you use the one that you had with your pre-crossgrade application? Is the new software somehow pre-registered to you (presumably with the information you provide when you send in the crossgrade)? Or is it simply unregistered?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Actually, I have done several searches, and there's virtually no way any answer from the past few weeks could have answered my question, since the crossgrades only started shipping about a week ago.
I've understood for some time what I needed to send, and what I qualify for, etc. (the leading topics for the past couple of months). What hasn't been clear is just what comes when you get the crossgrade. A poster in this thread has kindly answered one of my question: no hard manuals. If you have any answers regarding the other questions, I'd appreciate them. And, yes, I'll keep searching.
    Thanks.

  • Newly INstalled FCP Studio Universal - No Firewire Recognition!

I use a Canopus ADVC-110 via a Firewire to digitize from analog sources and feed my timeline to an external monitor.
Since I installed FCP Universal, I cannot get the software to acknowledge that there is a firewire device connected to the computer. I trashed prefs and still - no recognized firewire device.
    Any help out there???

whether it works in your situation or not, I don't know, but I don't think it can hurt.

  • Crossgrade Question

I have two FCP Studio licenses. I understand that the crossgrade is a universal edition, and that 5.1 has features not found in the previous version. I have sent disks in and upgraded one license since I just upgraded on computer to the new Intel iMac.
My question: can I use the same disks to upgrade on my non-intel G5, using my other license serial number, without sending the other set back and paying the (modest) crossgrade fee?
I wasn't planning on using the universal version on the G5, except now the project format is incompatible. Bummer.
    Philip at Parabolic Productions

I have a question about what to send back to Apple for the crossgrade to FCS. The pdf states that the original install disc is all that's is needed. I bought a STP retail upgrade in Dec. of last year, a B'day gift to myself to upgrade from ST 1.2, and have just come up with the $199 to go for FCS. I have not done a great deal of working projects in STP but have recently been asked to do a soundtrack and possibly some minor video editing for a local paid TV station program. Do I need to send all the discs back including the loops and training discs from the upgrade or just the STP upgrade install disc? I have read different versions of this in the forums. I also just bought a new Quad that I have yet to install STP on. Just got it two weeks ago thus the lack of funds for the FCS upgrade! I have been weeding through software to decide what stays on the Quad from the old Mac and what is not necessary. Will I need to install STP first before I send the disc(s) back or will the version they send install without STP on the Quad which as of right now doesn't have it loaded? Sorry I just found out about this in early April and it's been bugging me and I just aquired the funds to try and go for the full FCS and the offer to do some real editing has me excited. I am just trying to do everything right. It's kind of hard for me as I will be shipping the original disc or disc(s) off to Apple and that was hard earned money for me.
    Any insight would be great.
    Thanks

  • 'Crossgrade' Questions?!?

Okay, so I notice on the Apple Store page for the Crossgrade from FCP 1, 2, or 3 that it says, "Academic and not-for-resale versions of Final Cut Pro 1, 2, or 3 are not eligible for this upgrade.", I was told when I purchased my FCP 3 Academic from Apple that it would be capable to be upgraded to the retail version for all future versions...and 2.1 versions later they tell me this isn't so. Is that the case? And I thought I got screwed when I received and opened FCP 3 a half hour before 4 was announced and they would not work with me to get FCP 4.
Two, if you already owned Final Cut Studio with FCP 5.0.x you still need to pay $99 and mail in your disc to get Final Cut Studio Universal?
Three, is there anyway to upgrade FCS to FCS Universal without mailing in the disc...say going into the Apple Store and trading them discs there?
    eMac 1.42GHz (work)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4 1.42GHz Dual Processor (home) + 60BG Black Video iPod

Afraid I don't know anything about the Academic versions, but yes, if you already owned FCS 5.0.x you still needed to pay $49 and mail in your discs. Finally, there's no way to upgrade via the store - you have to mail it in.

  • Crossgrade information - unsure if eligible - UK

    Hi,
We ordered Final Cut Pro 5 upgrade from Final Cut Express through our supplier PC world business. My colleague recently informed me that we can now cross grade to Final Cut Studio 5.1 for £69 - which seems like a really good deal.
However... on crossgrade information site -
    http://www.apple.com/uk/universal/crossgrade/terms/fcs_upgrade.html
The part number is different to the one that we have here...
    M9922Z/A - instead of the listed M9922B/A
Are we still eligible, as I wouldnt want to send off my disk only to end up with nothing...
    Thanks!
    G5 DC 2.3ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 GB Ram

I would have thought you were fine - did a search and found one international version that clearly states you can crossgrade your version of FCP - see the small text at the bottom of the pdf.
    http://images.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/pdf/FCP-5.pdf
Apple tend to be fairly consistent with their policies so it is looking good!
In any case I would advise that you send the item using something like Royal Mail's Airsure service which offers a track and trace for the DVD's should anything go wrong.
    Best of luck,
    Michael

  • FCP 5.0.4-5.1 upgrade necessary for PPC?

When Apple released the upgrade from 5.0-5.1, they marketed it as a "crossgrade" to a Universal app. I ignored this announcement because I'm on a PowerBook G4.
However, with the latest announcement of the update to 5.1.3, I think I'm realizing that Apple's announcement wasn't a "crossgrade" but rather an upgrade to 5.1--and even PPC users need to pay the $49 to upgrade to 5.1.
So, my question is (aside from "Is my understanding of this correct?"), "Is it worth paying the $49 to upgrade to 5.1 on PPC?" What are the differences? I guess if I don't pay the $49, I'm locked out of all future FCP 5.x updates.
Secondly, is there a discount on the $49 upgrade for educational users? I couldn't find the upgrade in the Apple Store for Education, so I'm assuming no...

But yes, all future FCStudio products will be
    Universal... so get it now.
Isn't the crossgrade offer over? The sheet I had said through 12/31/2006 or some date in 2006. Me thinks.

  • FCP and Intel Macs no go?

For all who are asking whether rosetta will enable current versions of FCP to run on the new intel macs take a look at this article (near the bottom of the page)
    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1910879,00.asp

    Read this:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/topquestions.html
"Does Final Cut Studio run on the new Intel-based Mac computers?
The current version of Final Cut Studio is not supported on Intel-based Mac computers with Rosetta. A Universal version of Final Cut Studio will be available before the end of March 2006. Universal applications are designed to run flawlessly on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Mac computers.
If I buy Final Cut Studio today, can I get the Universal version when it’s available?
Yes. All owners of Final Cut Studio are eligible for a low-cost “crossgrade” to the Universal version for $49."
