Crossover games reliablility

I want to play games on my computer but don't find bootcamp comfterable becuase i don't like to partiton my main drive.  SO i have been looking at crossover games and it looks good but complicated. I have a 21.5 inch 2.66 ghz, 2GB iMac. gmaes like Dead Space require 2.8 ghz which i don't have. I don't like lag at all so are there some setting to turn down the graphics so it doesn't lag. Also can anyone provide any feedback on Crossover Games? I don't know how complicated it is. I am looking at games like Dead Space (2) and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Does it slow downt the computer, is it easy, can i install the game from a CD? also could someone show me a video or give me steps on how to install a game from CD into Crossover Games becuase i can't find it. Also is there any like modding the OS (Snow Leopard) or like using Terminal or bottles becuase not only am i not comfterable with doing that but don't know what to do. Thanks so much, hope i can buy this for my birthday becuase i know that it works

I play many Windows games using Wineskin... which uses Wine much like Crossover does, but its focused on making it into a port so it works and looks like a Mac app.  Crossover is actually much easier to use and has support, just that you have to pay for it (they have install scripts you can use to just select the game you want and it leads you through the whole install)... You will get a performance hit, but wether that is major or minor depends on the game in question, many games run really good.  In any case, when a game works in it, it will run MUCH better than a virtual machine could even think about.
All that said, using Bootcamp is basically just putting Windows directly on your machine and turning it into a PC.. there's no compatibility or performance issues that way because your mac really is a normal Windows PC when you do that... you just lose all access to Mac OS X when Windows is running, and you have all the risks and maintenance that comes along with any other PC.

You might be missing the 32bit compatibility libraries
I have installed bin-wine32 and i also have ETQW running so i should have all the required

I hope you're not just assuming that you have them all, but actually checked for packages and tried to fix it?
I got those errors when I used crossover, and I WAS missing compatibility libraries.
    lib32 for libxi?
    lib32 for glibc?
    Might be worth checking out.

  • Crossover Games/Standard/Professional on Arch Linux

The Crossover packages in Aur are now up to date and are working fine with python.

Hmm what was the problem with the default installer from Codeweavers. Normally it hasn't any problems. But you have to do some changes in the python scripts after the installation.

  • Best ways to play pc games on mac

What do you think are the best ways to play pc games on a mac. Obviously Bootcamp, is the best on most macs. but I have a mabr and wont to play some pc games off the disk's. any what do ypu think are the best ways apart drom bootcamp. Thanks

Try using CrossOver Games or WineBottler. Running Windows in an emulator reduces its performance.

  • If i buy a cd game, will it work on my mac?

let's say i buy a sims cd game from walmart and it's written for pc, will it work for my mac?

If run through Windows, yes. If run through Wine or CrossOver Games, it depends on the game.
Mac OS X cannot run Windows software natively.

I wish to Play Jonah Lomu rugby Challenge PC on my macbook pro,
I have both the disk and the .iso file.
Is there anyway to play this without having an install of windows as I do not have any windows licensing?

    Try CrossOver Games.

  • Installation of old games from a CD

    Hi;
I have a (relatively) new MacBook, and cannot figure out how to install some of my old Windows-compatible games from CD (GTA vice city, Starcraft etc). They do not autorun, and double-clicking "setup.exe" opens a file in Textedit rather than actually installing the program.
Do I need to copy files to my MacBook, or download a program? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Cheers
    Andy

Unless you can get them to work in CrossOver Games, you need to purchase and install Windows.

  • Cross Over Games - LOTRO - and MacBook

Hi all. I was just wondering if someone could help me. I own a macbook but want to play Lord of the Rings Online using the CrossOver Games software. I have read that that software will play LOTRO but I am more concerned with making sure that my computer will run the game. Unfortunately, I know NOTHING about disk space/memory space/whatever. It's all Greek to me.
I was wondering if someone could help me figure out if the game will run on my computer before I ask someone to buy it for me for Christmas. It would be awful to spend that money only to find out that my computer isn't fast enough/doesn't have enough space to run it.
Under my "About This Mac" tab, it says "Processor 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM"
The system requirements for LOTRO are:
    "OS: Windows® XP
Processor: Intel Pentium® 4 1.8 GHz or equivalent
    RAM: 512 MB
    Video: 64 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 3 or ATI® Radeon® 8500
    Disk Space: 7 GB available
    DirectX: DirectX® 9.0c
    Optical Drive: 2x DVD-ROM
    Internet: 56kbps Modem"
If anyone could help me, I would be so grateful! Sorry if my question is an ignorant one. I just don't understand enough about computers If you need any additional info about my computer or the game or crossover software, please let me know and I will do my best to tell you what you need to know!
    Thanks!

The only reason I am more interested in CrossOver Games than using bootcamp is because I would have to buy windows. That would be pretty expensive, especially considering that the only thing I want it for is to play a video game
If it is really just this one game, then it would be overkill
On the other hand you have to buy Crossover Games, while BootCamp is already part of OSX Leopard.
So it might be a 'dead race' cashwise.
I have considered downloading the free trial (it was unavailable for a while but maybe it is back up now) but I will still have to wait until after Christmas when I get the CrossOver Games software before I can test it. I suppose I could just not open the LOTRO and do the trial first. That way if it doesn't run well, I can return the game.
That depends on where you buy this game and if you can persuade the shop owner to let you do this.
To my knowledge opening the package of a game usually disqualifies it for return.
But it can't hurt to ask.
Thank you again for your help!
    You're welcome anytime.

  • The Game is Afoot

Just curious what is the difficulty with making a gamepad for the iPad. Yesterday I played Dead Space 2 for the 360 and downloaded the new Deadspace game for the iPad. Dead Space 2 is awesome though extremely gory. Dead Space for the iPad looks beautiful, sounds awesome, but isn't so easy to control. I would acknowledge that if I took a week practicing, I would get better at the controls but as a 30 year gamer, I am used to a game pad. I think games would sell like crazy if they were easier to control. I would love to sit down somewhere away from home, sit my iPad landscaped on my Griffin stand, connect my Bluetooth headphones and dismember aliens. I have downloaded several other crossover games, and the same thing happened each time, I played them a couple of times and then stopped because control was frustrating. Is there some developmental hangup that keeps this from happening, or the old Apple unwillingness to let in 3rd party developers. The new PSP touts the ability to use the PSP to control games on a tablet, (any bets whether that includes the iPad? Nah, probably not), so I pray that Apple will get the message and REALLY jump on the gaming bandwagon. Please Please Pretty Please!

maybe we are getting too old
and the younger crowd who send 30+ sms af day
and grew up with touch are fine with it
doubt there will be an official controller from apple though
maybe you should google for 3th party options or wait for them
there are some out for iphone

  • Steam games on a Macbook

I'm brand new to Mac and I wanted to play Left4dead but I was wondering if it was possible with my Macbook OS X 10.5.6 and how exactly do I go about doing it? If I use Crossover games, is that a better option, less risk of getting a Windows virus or am I better off using a windows operating system with boot camp or parallels to play windows games?

Windows games will always run better in a native windows environment, so bootcamp will always be faster. However, crossover provides everything that the game needs so it will run in the Mac environment without having to have Windows loaded behind it. Because of this it's the second best alternative. Running Parallels or VMware is not that great for games (even though it can be done) because having two operating systems as well as a virtualization program running behind the game will take up system resources. Additionally, most VM solutions do not have great video acceleration yet, and as such will run 3d programs slowly, if at all. For simple games it wont matter, but anything that's at all demanding of the hardware will struggle in virtualization environments. They're working on improving this, but for now VM solutions arent too viable an option for gamers.
If you do not want to partition your drive and install windows, and have to reboot your system every time you want to play Left4Dead, I'd recommend going with the Crossover option. It's not as fast as the windows version because there is some translation and whatnot going on, but it is much more convenient than bootcamp.

  • Lack of Nvidia extension support under macosx

I'd like to play City of Heroes under macosx using Crossover Games.
I can do so fine on my macbook pro because it has a ati graphics card.
However on my tower I have a nvidia graphics card and the game will not load.
When I reported it to Crossover Games, I got the following email:
    From Stefan Dösinger <[email protected]>
date Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:39 AM
    subject CrossOver Games Mac Trial
It says "Your card does not support GLNV_vertexprogram" when I launch CohUpdater.exe .
That's because GLNV_vertexprogram(a nvidia specific opengl extension) isn't supported on MacOS. It is strictly speaking a bug in CoH. This extension isn't garanted to be there, even if you have an Nvidia card. An application must not depend on it.
The thing is that this extension happens to be supported by all Nvidia drivers on Windows and Linux, but MacOS uses different drivers which don't support it. So the game's broken assumption that Nvidia->GLNV_vertexprogram support doesn't hold true on Macs.
I can understand that this causes troubles for you. I can file a bug in Apple's bugtracker requesting support for this extension, but its likely that they'll just tell me that software can't depend on this extension.

Not really sure what type of response you're expecting here. Youv'e been told that the drivers don't support it, and there's really nothing your or anyone else here can do about it but hope for future support.

  • Installing Boot Camp with Windows XP

I just bought a new game for my computer, but as it turns out, it's a PC ONLY game. So I thought I'd try out Boot Camp for the Mac. I went to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-xp/default.aspx and clicked on "Important: Download Windows XP Service Pack 3". After that it goes on about why you should install it and so on. But the thing I was wondering about, is if I buy that, will I be able to install it using Boot Camp.
I appreciate any and all responses.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
first things first: from the link you mentioned you only get the Service Pack 3 for Windows XP and not the operating system Windows XP itself.
That Service Pack will only install on a WIndows XP that is already installed.
Have a read through the BootCamp Installation Guide to be found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ plus the additional FAQs there.
You have to buy yourself a Windows XP; Vista or Windows 7 to install it on your Mac with BootCamp.
Depending on what Windows game it is you wanna play, you can also have buy and use Crossover Games for Mac https://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/
Look through their compatibility list http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/ whether that game is supported.
    Regards

  • Trying to understand capabilities of Flash Professional and Flash Builder 4

I recently purchased the CS5 Master Collection and am struggling to understand the uses for Flash Professional and Flash Builder 4.  I was inspired by Jay Pavlina's Super Mario Crossover game and wish to make similar applications.
However, I am confused about whether I should be using Flash Professional or Flash Builder 4 or both?  I purchased the two books that Jay Pavlina recommended "ActionScript 3.0 Animation Making Things Move!" and "Essential ActionScript 3.0".  I've been trying to find resources that will help me understand exactly the purpose of each of these applications.
It appears to me that ActionScript 3.0 is used in both?  So which one should I be using?  Or both?  Or is one more design oriented and the other more development oriented?  Can one make flash game like Jay's using just one or the other?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought about it a bit more. I think you should take my advice with a grain of salt. I am still standing behind what I said but there are some circumstances that we are not in control of.
If your task is to be the beginning and the end of your code - don't bother with Flash IDE. BUT, if you plan to monetize on your Flash/ActionScript skills, you may not have choice but be familiar with as many environments as possible.
Here is my personal experiense that illustrates this point.
I always prayed to gods, chanted to mandalas and made offerings to spirits to avoid a single thing - not ever deal with custom Flash components. Rightly or wrongly I perceive them as one of the lamest Macromedia creations. I am not talking about SWCs but about this thing that you create with preview and all other crap. Above all, it did not (and still doesn't) make much sense to me from functionality standpoint.
Anyway, as, I guess, a karmic retribution, I was dealt this card. I got involved in a project(s) where I was not told that my main task would be to, you are right, write and reverse engineer Flash custom components. If I did not know Flash IDE I would be totally lost. Custom components are so counter-intuitive that only people without programming background can view them as a convenience. Well, it is a convenience if they are written correctly.
The point is that, if you want to make a career out of it, you should gradually get involved with Flash IDE for now. The truth is that there are tons of agencies out there that do not have resources to hire high level developers and they employ "drag n' drop, cut n' paste" individuals. And this is a real market segment. Even well seasoned development houses have to succumb to this reality and cater to such entities.
It is your choice, of course, but I thought it wouldn't be fare to you to be very fascist about pushing my one-sided views.

  • Hello everyone.. I just purchased a macbook air 13" Just have a question regarding gaming

i was wondering if my mac can handle running Rome total war gold edition ?

The MBA will run virtually any game (some on OS X and some on Windows).  The question is how fast it will run.  Try it and see.  The HD 5000 graphics processor is impressive.
For Windows games the Parallels VM will slow down the execution of the game so you might consider Bootcamp for that.  You want to dedicate all the resources to Windows while you run the game.  That said, it will run under Parallels.
Be cognizant of heat and do what you can to keep the air flowing well.  A laptop cooler may help. https://discussions.apple.com/message/2093137#2093137
