Crs,css and evm deamons in Oracle RAC

Can anyone please explain me the basic functionality and purpose of crs,css and evm deamons in Oracle RAC.
Read some where that ocssd deamon performs cluster configuration information in OCR disk......is this ocssd deamon alias is css ???

The Oracle Clusterware processes on UNIX-based systems are:
■ crsd—Performs high availability recovery and management operations such as
maintaining the OCR and managing application resources. This process runs as
the root user, or by a user in the admin group on Mac OS X-based systems. This
process restarts automatically upon failure.
■ evmd—Event manager daemon. This process also starts the racgevt process to
manage FAN server callouts.
■ ocssd—Manages cluster node membership and runs as the oracle user; failure
of this process results in cluster restart.
■ oprocd—Process monitor for the cluster. Note that this process only appears on
platforms that do not use vendor clusterware with Oracle Clusterware.

  • Difference between Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition for Oracle RAC

    Hi,
In our current setup we have RAC on standard edition and client is now planning to go for Enterprise Edition but not yet decide because of cost.
Is there any difference between Grid Infrastructure 11gR3 Enterprise edition and Standard Edition ?
They told me to first install Enterprise Edition and then will move to Standard Edition if they can't get the EE license so in that case do i have to re-install Grid infrastructure for standard edition?

There is no "Grid Infrastructure 11gR3 Enterprise edition and Standard Edition", is only Grid Infrastructure 11gR2.
About Oracle Clusterware (Grid Infrastructure) licensing.
At least one of the servers in the cluster is licensed for Oracle Database (SE1, SE, or EE)
A cluster is defined to include all the machines that share the same Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) and Voting Disk.

Note : Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC), is an option to Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition and included with Oracle Database 11g Standard Edition (on clusters with a maximum of 4 sockets).
If you move to Oracle EE you must purchase a separate licence to use RAC option
    About Installation:
Nothing changes on your current setup of Grid Infrastructure 11.2
Just install a new fresh installation of Oracle Database (On current clusterware) chosing E.E during Install. Configure the database/services to start from this new ORACLE HOME. Nothing change on Database all previous backup and features used still unchanged. Using this new Oracle Home new features are enabled to be used by your databases.

  • Admin and dump directories for oracle RAC

I have conflicting environments running RAC on Solaris Sparc. We have a shared file system that contains the dump directories for both instance in the cluster.
both instance are writing to the same directorie for the alert log and other trace files. alert_<sid1>.log and alert_<sid2>.log are in the same directory. Should these be seperated on put these directories on local file system on the nodes? My instance is crashing on a regular basis, just wondering if this could cause a problem.
    thanks in advance.

afaik , the ora-00600[12333] could'nt be crashing the instance but rather indicates a communication mismatch between the
client and the server or a networking issue .. Usually those are ignorable ..
however the other error you indicated ora-00600 [kclfadd_1] could be responsible for Instance crashes ..
Looks like this issue only affects 64 bit versions of Oracle and this affects Oracle 10.2.0.2 ..
    one-off patches are available for this issue on Linux , HP Tru64 , AIX , Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 { all 64 bit platforms only }
This issue is an Oracle bug and caused due to corruptions in the cache element structures used by LMS's for cache fusion ..
These crashes might have nothing to do with the Shared bdump / udump locations you have ..
My advice would be to apply the one-off patch if it's available for your platform on 10.2.0.2 or upgrade to 10.2.0.[3/4]

  • Oracle RAC for SAP on Linux and OCFS

We are going to be installing SAP with Oracle 10.2.0.4 RAC on Linux RHEL 5.2 and OCFS.  The Oracle RAC documentation states:
You must store the following components in the cluster file system when you use RAC
    in the SAP environment:
    - Oracle Clusterware (CRS) Home
    - Oracle RDBMS Home
    - SAP Home (also /sapmnt)
    - Voting Disks
    - OCR
    - Database
I'm curious about the requirement of installing the Oracle Home on shared clustered filesystem.  In other RAC installations I've built, I installed the binaries on local filesystems on each node.  This is to facilitate the concept of rolling patches.  With the SAP's requirement, it appears rolling patches are out of the question.  Can someone enlighten me on why SAP requires the Oracle Home reside on shared filesystem.
    Thanks

We have even put /oracle/SID on OCFS, because the brtools cannot cope with local FS. If you take a backup on node1, then you cannot restore it from node2. Or you could start multiple brconnects at the same time (this is normally prevented with a lock file). Of course you could run all your all your br commands on a dedicated node, but this doesn't fit the RAC idea much.
Just my two cents, of course this does not fully explain, why the ORACLE_HOME has to be shared as well.
    Best regards, Michael
Edit: Ahh, now i recall, i really think it is because of the BR*Tools, they need the initSID.sap file in ORACLE_HOME/dbs. This implies that it won't be a big thing to get SAP on RAC running with local ORACLE_HOME's, but that doesn't help a lot as long as SAP does not officially support it...

what is the use of HACMP ? Is it optional ? when should be installed and when not?
Please can you provide me all details abut HACMP and how it affects ORACLE RAC 11g R2 installation on AIX??

    Regards,
    Hi,
HACMP is vendor clusterware (IBM technology) for cluster it is High Availability Cluster Multi Processing. When installing Oracle RAC it must installed on top of vendor clusterware.
HACMP comes in play when you use raw logical volume and it needs to be managed by HACMP.
Since 10g it is not mandatory to use HACMP so you can choose not to use it and let Oracle manage all the cluster services
    Hope this helps

  • Does /sapmnt need in cluster file system(SAP ECC 6.0 with oracle RAC)

We are going to be installing SAP with Oracle 10.2.0.4 RAC on Linux SuSE 10 and OCFS2. The Oracle RAC documentation states:
You must store the following components in the cluster file system when you use RAC
    in the SAP environment:
    - Oracle Clusterware (CRS) Home
    - Oracle RDBMS Home
    - SAP Home (also /sapmnt)

    - Database
What I want to ask is if I really need put SAP Home(also /sapmnt) on cluster file system? I will build a two nodes oracel 10g RAC and I also have another two nodes to install SAP CI and DI. My orginial think is sapmnt is a NFS share, and mount to all four nodes(RAC node and CI/DI), and all oracle stuff was on OCFS2(only two rac nodes are OCFS), anybody can tell me if SAP Home(also /sapmnt) can be NFS mount not OCFS2, thanks.
    Best regards,
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
I don't think you need to keep /sapmnt in  ocfs2 . Reason any file system  need  to be in cluster is,in RAC environment, data stored in the cache of one Oracle instance to be accessed by any other instance by transferring it across the private network  and preserves data integrity and cache coherency by transmitting locking and other synchronization information across cluster nodes.
AS this applies to redo files, datafiles and control files only ,  you should be fine with nfs mount of /sapmnt sharing across and not having ocfs2.

  • Oracle RAC - Not getting performance(TPS) as we expect on insert/update

    Hi All,
We got a problem while executing insert/update and delete queries with Oracle RAC system, we are not getting the TPS as we expected in Oracle RAC. The TPS of Oracle RAC (for insert/update and delete ) is less than as that of
    single oracle system.
But while executing select queries, we are getting almost double TPS as that of Single Oracle System.
We have done server side and client side load balancing.
Can anyone knows to solve this strange behaviour? Shall we need to perform any other settings in ASM/ Oracle Nodes
for better performance on insert/update and delete queries.
The following is the Oracle RAC configuration
    OS & Hardware :Windows 2008 R2 , Core 2 Du0 2.66GHz , 4 GB
    Software : Oracle 11g 64 Bit R2 , Oracle Clusterware & ASM , Microsoft iSCSI initiator.
    Storage Simulation : Xeon 4GB , 240 GB ,Win 2008 R2, Microsoft iSCSI Traget
Please help me to solve this. We are almost stuck with this situation.
    Thanks
    Roy

  • Oracle RAC Concept  - load balancing

    Hello All,
I have a question about Oracle RAC and how it balance loading.
What I know about Oracle RAC that it balancing load between its node, so if a new session is connected to the Database it will execute on the node which have less load.
If I am having an application that connects to the database with few number of sessions and some sessions have huge (huge load) processes to execute while the other sessions are executing small process (in terms of load).
So below is an example scenario that i am asking for an answer of it:
if am having a two node RAC database.
My application that is connected to this RAC database wants to execute three processes P1, P2 and P3 each will have a session correspondingly S1, S2 and S3
Let is say that P1 will take 60% of the database resources (memory ....) and P2 will take 1% and P3 1%.
So my question is it a sessions load balancing or Processes load balancing ? So in case and randomly (Managed by ORACLE RAC) S1 is connected to node 1 and it is using node 1 resources so the load on node 1 will be 60%, so when S2 and S3 needs to connect it will go to node 2 since node 1 is loaded. in that case i will have Node 1 using 60% of it is resources (becuase of S1 that is executing P1) while node 2 only uses 2 % (because of S2 and S3 that is executing P2 and P3).
Is that how Oracle RAC works ? or it balance the load of S1 (60%) between node 1 and node 2 ?
I am asking this question since my application is not users application, so it will connect to the database with few number of sessions, and 1 session of them may execute a huge process while the other are executing small processes.
So in that case, how RAC is doing the balance loading?

  • Dataguard vs Oracle RAC

Could anybody please letme know what are the main 10 points of difference between ORACLE RAC AND DATA GUARD

In short, Oracle RAC and Oracle Dataguard are focusing on multiply different aspects of Database, they are mutual supplementation. However it's not cheap to have them both.
Oracle RAC is one Database Data storage with multiple hosts. One host down, database is still running virtually no downtime for swithover. When Data Storages down all hosts down.
Oracle DataGuard is multiple hosts with multiple data storages, one host down need a bit fail over time. when data storage down will also require a little fail over time.

In addition to Chandra's steps , also make sure that the Shared Voting and OCR disks are visible from Linux1 and have the same device mappings as were before the Node reboot.
If the CRS stack fails to come up , you should be looking at the
following files to start with :
    a) The OS Messages file to check if there are any messages logged from the
the time when you attempted to start the stack manually.
    b) The /tmp mountpoint sometimes contains files names crsctl* which could
also indicate what the problem is.
    c) The logs under
    $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/<nodename>/ocssd
    $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/<nodename>/crsd
    $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/<nodename>/client
Let's know if there are any messages in these files which might help us analyze
    this further.

    在网上查了不少类似问题,其他网友无法启动CRS主要集中在几个方面:
    1、/tmp权限不正确
    2、删除/var/tmp/.oracle下的文件,再重启
    3、oifcfg查看到网卡设置问题
    但我遇到的问题,以上3项都是正常的,跟这个http://www.itpub.net/thread-1330782-1-1.html 问题类似。
    请问这个问题是什么原因导致的?

  • Load Balance Problem in Oracle RAC 10.2.0.4 (two nodes with CRS)

    Hi all,
I have an Oracle RAC 10.2.0.4 with two nodes and I'm having problems with sessions load balance.
The problem is that all connections are going to the node which is enabled as 'master' in RAC, the node who has located .db resource in CRS.
If .db resource is located in node1 all connections are made in node1. In the same way, all connections are made in node2 when .db resource from CRS stack is located in node2.
The connections are made by a pool in Tomcat 6 using RAC service for made the connections.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.
Here is an example of my net configuration:
    listener.ora in node1:
    LISTENER_RAC_NODE1 =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1_vip)(PORT = 1525)(IP = FIRST))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1)(PORT = 1525)(IP = FIRST))
    tnsnames in node1:
    LISTENERS_RAC =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1_vip)(PORT = 1525))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2_vip)(PORT = 1525))
    NODE1 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1_vip)(PORT = 1525))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1)(PORT = 1525))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = rac)
    (INSTANCE_NAME = rac1)
    RAC =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node1_vip)(PORT = 1525))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = node2_vip)(PORT = 1525))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = yes)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = rac)
    ********************************************************

    It is my fault.
It was the connection service. I had one one with preferred option and one without it. Now is working well.

  • NetBackup Oracle Agent and Oracle RAC

    Hi
In normal oracle, i will just need to customise the template (hot_database_backup.sh) provided by the netbackup installation. Under the selection list, type in "hot_database_backup.sh" and it will work fine.
For oracle rac, it seems not so straight forward. Has any tried it?

Cost is the big factor. We have certain environments that have no intention of moving to 11.. but some do. Cost moves around. This is simply trading one kind of cost for another. Especially if all environments are covered by an Oracle Support contract. Then the cost is not Oracle related.
But that ultimately is a PHB decision.
Instead of buying dedicated RAC clusters for the offending ones.. its a thought to run 2 versions on the same servers... ofcourse with the higher CRS.However, yes you can run run a mix ... as Dan says, not necessarily recommended. MUST use highest available CRS and be very careful that the CRS supports all version of the DB.
(And plan on having your interconnect flooded.)
I highly recommend testing the bejazis out of it to verify your shop can indeed handle the configuration.

  • Where to download Oracle RAC 11g2 CRS/clusterware?

    Hello experts.
I'm building a home/test Oracle RAC environment on 11g2 and I can't seem to find the CRS/Clusterware for download?
I've been able to download the CVU and verify all of the server/OS/systems configuration work that was needed upfront.
I'm running on CentOS 5.5 (RHEL 5.5), on a Sun Sunfire v20z, that has FC disk array and FC HBA's connected over fiber (LC/LC connections).
I've downloaded the Oracle 11g2 software 1&2, and also the Grid software, and the CVU software.
CVU shows all configurations passed... can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm assuming Oracle allows people to download CRS/Clusterware for non-commercial (personal education) purposes without license?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I'm building a home/test Oracle RAC environment on 11g2 and I can't seem to find the CRS/Clusterware for download?Here:
    https://edelivery.oracle.com/
    Or:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html
CVU shows all configurations passed... can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm assuming Oracle allows people to download CRS/Clusterware for non-commercial (personal education) purposes without license?Oracle Clusterware and Oracle ASM binaries are installed as a single binary called the grid infrastructure. So, If you downloaded Grid Infrastructure you already have the CRS and ASM installation.
All software downloads are free, and most come with a Developer License that allows you to use full versions of the products at no charge while developing and prototyping your applications, or for strictly self-educational purposes.
