CRS required for HA Cluster.

Hello Everyone,
I would like every one's expert opinion on a new set up which we are building. Currently we are having two T4 Solaris Servers. Each Server is hosting 4 databases. We have bought two new T5 Solaris Servers. We plan to do the following setup.
1) Create zone cluster with Solaris HA Packages. Each Server will be acting as a failover Server for the other Server.
2) We have installed Standalone GI on both the Servers. The ASM Disks are shared from both the nodes. Every database has its own Oracle home
3) After migrating the database on these new servers we are able to move the database from one server to another. To do this we have to stop the database and dismount its corresponding DISK GROUP and the mount the DISKGROUP from other node and start the database from there. Upto this activity everythin seems fine and working.
4) Now what we did was a manual fail over. To automate this some Sun Solaris HA packages are available which will not only move the Oracle Home ( RDBMS ) from one node to other but will also move the DISKGROUPS from one node to other at the time of failover. All these resources(Oracle Home and Diskgroups ) will be added in a resource group.
5) The problem which are facing is these HA packages require CRS service. But CRS is not available in Standalone GI.
6) We are intending to reconfigure the GRID with CRS using the CRS installation. Note ( We dont intend to use RAC )
7)  CRS will be installed on each node and both will act as a different Infrastructure. They wont be communicating to each other.
8) Our Concern is just by installing the CRS will it incur additional licence or is it considered as a One node RAC.
9) We are not reinstalling the Oracle RDBMS with One Node RAC option. It is normal single instance RDBMS home.
10) At a time my database will be running on only one Node.
Kindly give your expert opinions and advices.
Regards
Amit

OCA (Oracle Certificate Authority) is Oracle Application Server's Certificate Authority used to manage digital certificates. You can generate/sign/issue certificate(s) from OCA.
If you're planning to use digital certificates, then you would also need to use 'Oracle Wallet Manager (OWM)' to store certificates.

    > We are planning a 2 node Oracle 9i RAC cluster on Sun
Cluster 3.Good. This is a popular configuration.
Can you please explain these 2 questions?
    1)
If we have a hardware disk array RAID controller with
LUNs etc, then why do we need to have Veritas Volume
Manager (VxVM) if all the LUNS are configured at a
hardware level?VxVM is not required to run RAC. VxVM has an option (separately
licensable) which is specifically designed for OPS/RAC. But if
you have a highly reliable, multi-pathed, hardware RAID platform,
you are not required to have VxVM.
    2)
Do we need to have VxFS? All our Oracle database
files will be on raw partitions.No.
IMHO, simplify is a good philosophy. Adding more software
and layers into a highly available design will tend to reduce
the availability. So, if you are going for maximum availabiliity,
you will want to avoid over-complicating the design. KISS.
In the case of RAC, or Oracle in general, many people do use
raw and Oracle has the ability to manage data in raw devices
pretty well. Oracle 10g further improves along these lines.
A tenet in the design of highly available systems is to keep
the data management as close to the application as possible.
Oracle, and especially 10g, are following this tenet. The only
danger here is that they could try to get too clever, and end up
following policies which are suboptimal as the underlying
technologies change. But even in this case, the policy is
coming from the application rather than the supporting platform.

  • What are the host network requirements for a 2012 R2 failover cluster using fiber channel?

I've seen comments on here regarding how the heartbeat signal isn't really required anymore - is that true?  We started using Hyper-V in its infancy and have upgraded gleefully every step of the way.  With 2012 R2, we also upgraded from 1gb iSCSI
to 8GB Fiber Channel.  Currently, I have three NICs in use on each host.  One for "No cluster communication" on it's own VLAN.  Another for "Allow cluster network communication on this network" but NOT allowing clients, on
a different VLAN.  And lastly the public network which allows cluster comms and clients on it (public VLAN).
Is it still necessary to have all three of these NICs in use?  If the heartbeat isn't necessary any more, is there any reason to not have two public IPs and do away with the rest of the network?  (two for fault tolerance)  Does Live Migration
still use Ethernet if FC is available?  I wasn't sure what all has changed with these requirements since Hyper-V first came out.
If it matters, we have 5 servers w/160GB RAM, 8 NICs, dual HBAs connected to redundant FC switches, going to two SANs.  We're running around 30 VMs right now.
Can someone share their knowledge with me regarding the proper setup for my environment?  Many Thanks!

    Hi,
You can setup cluster with a single network but that leaves you with single point of failure on the Networking front, it is still recommended to have a heartbeat network.
Live migration would still happen though Ethernet, it has nothing to do with FC. Don't get confused, you had iSCSI for storage which used one of your VLAN and now you have FC for your storage.
Your hardware specs looks good. You can set up the following networks -
    1. Public Network - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
    2. Heartbeat Network - Don't use teamed Adaptor
    3. Live Migration - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
Plan properly and draw guidelines to visualize and to remove single point of failure at all points.
Feel free to ask if you have some more queries.

  • Hardware required for RAC setup at home

    Hi All,
Could you please suggest the Hardware required for practicing RAC at home.
    Regards,
    VN

    Hi, "user7202581",
For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. Also see: RAC on OVM templates: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Cisco Access Registrar 5 : What design or requirements for active/ active deploiement

    Hi Every one
I want to install Cisco Access Registrar 5  on two different servers in active/ active design
What design or requirements for active/ active deploiement ?
Using Sun Solaris ? (i know using sun Sloaris i can have this mode of high availability BUT I PREFER INSTALLING IT ON  RED HAT ENTERPRISE )
Using RED HAT ENTERPRISE on the two servers  ?   i wan to knew if i must use Vmware with the adequate licences (Vcenter) to provide FT fonctionnality for active / active Design ?
How i can use the replication   to provide a complet active / active Design ?
    Cordialement
    Zammit Ikbel

It depends what functionalities you want to use on CAR.
    For example:
If only plain authentication is needed, you can install two servers independently and just configure replication between them (they just need IP visibility to replicate configuration). NAS clients can contact servers in  round-robin or you can share load on two servers in some other way.
If you want CAR to perform session management and dynamic IP address allocation, than you need some cluster solution, as two servers must have synchronized state of sessions and consistent administration of addresses allocated from a pool.
    Best regards,
    Jasmina

  • Are 3 IPs required for a SCAN in 11.2?

I've read the docs on setting up SCAN for 11.2. Oracle recommends 3 IPs but doesn't say what may happen if you only use one. We have a limited number of IPs and our admin guys want us to use only one. If we do use only 1 IP for the SCAN, what sort of trouble might this cause? Is there anything else we should do if we use only 1 IP?

    Hi,
Rather than have the SCAN configured with new/different IPs, wouldn't it work just as well if it was configured with the VIPs or pubic IPs of the nodes in the cluster? Is it mandatory to use SCAN?
No, but it's highly recommended to use SCAN unless there's strong business reason preventing it from being used.
Is it supported to remove SCAN?
SCAN is an elementary part of 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure, it's not supported to remove SCAN. So, you must use an IP at least.
SCAN IP is a new "layer" network (oracle) with high availability that allows you to change the characteristics of your cluster (i.e add/remove nodes) without the need to make configuration changes in their clients "Grid concept".
The IP SCAN and VIP have different goals, therefore working together.
The VIP IP provides high availability at the level of the Cluster.
The SCAN IP provides high availability at the level of the Clients.
No matter if we are adding or removing nodes in a cluster or if the nodes are active or inactive, SCAN IP is always available for clients (Managing Connections-Failover) since one node of cluster is active.
Why not use VIP or Public ?
Because for us to have the concept of GRID we must configure the feature only one time and it will self manage and make cluster transparent to yours clients.
If you add or remove an NODE it's require to modify the connections of yours all clients (VIP/PUBLIC IP) you broke the concept of GRID. (This makes a big difference when you have many clients i.e.: Over 20 clients.)
If we remove or add node we must configure the clients to use/or not this node. Using SCAN he do this automatically.
    How the things works?
You configure only one host on your client (e.g host-scan). When the client requests a connection, Oracle Client 11gR2 searching for IPs available for this host-scan. So, he try connect on cluster using one of IPs avaliable.
The SCAN Listener will receive this connection and re-direct to the node (Host Listener) with less workload from this point the the connection is established using Virtua IP (VIP).
I can say : SCAN is the connection manager with high availability.
    Why 3 SCAN IP?
    Sebastian answered this very well.
Re: Are 3 IPs required for a SCAN in 11.2?
This is the purpose of SCAN IP. I hope you understand.

    Hi,
I am trying to establish hardware requirements for installing SOA Suite 11.1.1.4.0 on ExaLogic Server for development, testing, staging and production environment. What will be the ideal configurations you need for a 2 Node Cluster on Exalogic Server.

"Can we have same configurations for production that enterprise deployment guide speaks about."
That is your own choice, maybe you want a different identity management system or do not want to use RAC etcetera.
You pick the components that are relevant to you and follow the guide to set-up these components.
To get acquainted with setting-up such an environment it would be wise to start with the webhosts and the soahosts, see if you can get to work.
"Whether we need to think about high availability system incase of production or will this configuration suffice the scenario here."
It discusses a reference topology for a high available environment and how to set-up the environment.

Can anyone of you explain me what exactly the system H/W requirement for Installing Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure along with Oracle RAC.
    I already have 8GB RAM,i3 Processor.

If you like to install RAC on vmware, this 8gb memory enough. you can allocate 2gb for one node and also other. So total 4GB enough for RAC installation.
