CRS-X vs ASR9K vs 7600
Dears
Was checking specs for new CRS-X and would like your feedback please regarding ASR9K vs CRS-X
1- Beside CRS multishelf, why would someone prefer CRS-X over ASR9k ?
ASR9K seems to be more interesting as it provides 440 G/slot however CRS-X provides 400 G/slot. Also I believe they support nearly same range of interfaces types. To me seems reason someone would go to CRS If he already has CRS in network as in this case it would be more economic to just upgrade existing fabric/LC and go to CRS-X instead of getting new HW ASR9k chassis
What do you think ?
|||
2- Also it came to my mind that 12K provides only 10G/slot however 7609 provides 40 G/slot ... So does this means 7600 can be good candidate for 12K replacment espically that XR 12416 provides total capacity of 320 Gbps and 7609 provides 720 Gbps ??
Many Thanks
Regards
Sherif Ismail
I would talk to your account team about the future hardware and software feature plans for each platform and how that fits in with your requirements. I would not just consider the current system capacties. Things such as power, cooling, the technology used to interconnect the components with the need to keep backwards compatibilty mean each hardware platform has inherent scaling limits.
The current ASR9922 hardware actually delivers 660Gb/slot with fabric resiliency although there are not currently any linecards that use that much bandwidth. Publically available marketing slides already talk about the ASR being scalable to 1.2Tb/slot.
Remember that you need a revision B chassis for 400Gb/slot on the CRS. The "legacy" chassis is limited to 200Gb/slot.
If things like the high availability features in IOS-XR are important to you then a platform like the 7600 with its multilayer switch heritage and which runs IOS might not be suitable.
You could also consider the recently announced NCS 6000.

Sherif IsmailHi Xander
First many thanks for your assistance
Have recheked CEs config and they are straight forward. [trunk interface allowing all vlans]
However I have added CE3/PE3 to topolgoy and results were somehow interesting
CE1(ME3800) -- PE1 (ASR9K) --- PE2 (7600) -- PE3 (7600) -- CE3 (ME3800)
|
CE2(ME3800)
Now both CE1/CE2 can ping CE3 but still no communication between CE1 & CE2
Dont know what could be the difference between CE2 & CE3. Only thing that comes to my mind is that with CE2, PE2 is directly connected to PE1. Dont know if this could be a problem or not as in this case MPLS label should be pop but still there is VC label
Another thing I removed "rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric" from all PEs cause with this command CE3 (only) was receiving BPDU with different VLAN ! [dont know if this behavior is normal or not]
interface GigabitEthernet4/2
no ip address
speed 1000
service instance 55 ethernet
encapsulation dot1q 55
rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
bridge-domain 55
*Oct 24 21:57:14.158: %SPANTREE-2-RECV_PVID_ERR: Received BPDU with inconsistent peer vlan id 2 on GigabitEthernet0/23 VLAN55.
*Oct 24 21:57:14.158: %SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PVID_LOCAL: Blocking GigabitEthernet0/23 on VLAN0055. Inconsistent local vlan.
*Oct 24 21:57:15.158: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Vlan55, changed state to down
UPE-42#
Once I remove it
UPE-42# *Oct 24 21:59:23.638: %SPANTREE-2-UNBLOCK_CONSIST_PORT: Unblocking GigabitEthernet0/23 on VLAN0055. Port consistency restored
Now what do you think ? :]
Many Thanks

Hi all experts.
If an ISP has a customer with 200 branches, and that customer wants all his branches to be provided layer 2 connectivity, means it wants a full mesh at layer 2 just like ethernet, so that there is no need for Tunnels and the client is able to run any protocol at layer 2 like OSPF etc. What method generally an ISP use to provide such service to its customers ? i mean is it VPLS ? or EoMPLS ? AToM ? L2tpv3 ?
Can some one highlight how such a service is provided and what is the recommended method ?John,
the workaround could be a bunch of p2p EoMPLS'es forming a cloud, but that won't scale well and doesn't really substitute all the advantages VPLS has.
As for gear, high-end SP boxes support VPLS - ASR9k, CRS, GSR, and of course 7600. For the full list please consult the Cisco Feature Navigator.
Hope to clarify. -

Hello All,
There are many wonderful Service Provider infrastructure hardening documents available from Cisco CCO and CiscoPress.
I have seen many over my life. Sample documents are:
Mannaging ACLs (7600, CRS IOS-XR, GSR) - automation tools, Document ID: 13608
Network Core Infrastructure Best Practices, Yusuf Bhaiji
Cisco Guide to Harden Cisco IOS XR Devices
Each service provider is recommended to enable and configure rACLs, CoPP, block unnecessary control protocols over the edge, Protect BGP peering with interface ACLs and many many more. Unfortunately there is no tool available from Cisco to configure and maintain all those features.
I would like to ask question to NetPro community. Have you seen any working products from Cisco or Cisco partners for ACL management. Lets keep Cisco Security Manager (CSM) aside. CSM is enterprise oriented tool and supporting routers up to 6500/7600.
I’m looking for this tool for few years already. Looks like other Service Providers are using home made developments. Google recently partially published own tool capirca to a public domain (do search on “ACL Management @ Google” or capirca). This is good start but I is missing ACL deployment module (it is not released by google).
Please share you experience!
Cheers! -

Migration from 7600 to ASR9k - split horizon groups
Hi,
On 7600 I have a set of service instances. For example:
service instance 7583 ethernet
encapsulation dot1q 2007 second-dot1q 420
rewrite ingress tag pop 2 symmetric
bridge-domain 11
service instance 420 ethernet
encapsulation dot1q 2004 second-dot1q 420
rewrite ingress tag pop 2 symmetric
bridge-domain 11 split-horizon
service instance 7694 ethernet
encapsulation dot1q 2002 second-dot1q 420
rewrite ingress tag pop 2 symmetric
bridge-domain 11 split-horizon
int vlan 11
ip vrf forw Test
ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.128
To convert this to IOS-XR - how should I specify split horizon?
Like this?
interface Ten0/1/0/0.7583 l2transport
encapsulation dot1q 2007 second-dot1q 420
rewrite ingress tag pop 2 symmetric
interface Ten0/1/0/0.420 l2transport
encapsulation dot1q 2004 second-dot1q 420
rewrite ingress tag pop 2 symmetric
interface Ten0/1/0/0.7694 l2transport
encapsulation dot1q 2002 second-dot1q 420
rewrite ingress tag pop 2 symmetric
interface BVI11
description Test
vrf Test
ipv4 address 1.1.1.1/25
l2vpn
bridge group BG-TEST
bridge-domain BD-TEST-11
interface Ten0/1/0/0.7583
interface Ten0/1/0/0.420
interface Ten0/1/0/0.7694
Or like this:
<config omitted>
l2vpn
bridge group BG-TEST
bridge-domain BD-TEST-11
interface Ten0/1/0/0.7583
split-horizon group
interface Ten0/1/0/0.420
split-horizon group
interface Ten0/1/0/0.7694
split-horizon group
In short: Do I need to specify "split-horizon group"?
/JorgenJorgen,
your second example is how to go about it.
in your l2vpn configuration and then underneath the bridge-domain section you define your EFPs (l2transport interfaces) and you can take them out of the default split horizon group.
Three SHG groups are defined for VPLS(SHG0,SHG1 and SHG2). By default, all the
bridge-ports( AC or PW ) come in SHG0. When a Split horizon-group is configured
under the Bridge-port( either under AC or PW) they come in SHG2.
PWs defined under VFI come in SHG1.
By definition, Bridge-ports in same SHG(SHG1 and SHG2) won't talk to each
other ( this is not applicable for SHG0 though ).
SHG0 --- > SHG0,SHG1 and SHG2
SHG1 --- > SHG0 and SHG2
SHG2 ----> SHG0 and SHG1

Improving install experience in IOS XR (ASR9K/CRS)
This time its a question to our customers:
If you insisted on keeping SMUs, SPs, Install rollback and the things you have gotten used to today, how would you change the install process to make it simpler, but still provide what we do now?
Or asked differently what do struggle with today when it comes to Installing/Upgrading Software and what would you like to see improved.
We want to hear your feedback. You can send a message too, please don't hold back..
Eddie.Mathieu, inline:
>For example we were running 4.3.4 on our ASR9K and faced few bugs. Most of them were fixed in >SP3. While upgrading a router from 4.3.4 to SP3, we ran into a bug that completely crashed our >router. We had to turboboot everything. We raised a ticket with TAC and they told us we had to install >asr9k-px-4.3.4.CSCul58246.tar before upgrading to SP3. Unfortunately, this fix needs >asr9k->px->4.3.4.CSCug75299.tar and asr9k-px-4.3.4.CSCui94441.tar. This means to upgrade a >router from 4.3.4 to SP3, you actually need to reboot it 3 times!!! By optimizing as much as we can >this process, this means a maintenance of ~50min which is a lot of downtime for our customers!
Mathieu the SP Readme has been updated to include these per-requistes, so hopefully in the future it shouldn't be required. This process of pre-req smus for SP are not needed from 5.1.3 on.
>Why not releasing a 4.3.4-SP image each time your release a SP? At least providers could turboboot >it already patched?
Turboboot is the last thing we want you guys to do, its slow and painful, turboboot should rarely be used.
>Concerning turboboot, the transfert speed thru an integrated management port is catastrophic. We >can't specify a large block size to speed up things so even if we have a TFTP directly connected to >the port, transfers are way too slow. A good way would be to be able to transfer files with HTTP / FTP >during a turboboot.
We don't have a TCP stack in ROMMON and we don't plan to support it. We will support things like ONIE and IPXE in the future.
>Then if transfers are done in a fast & efficient way, we could save time by directly sending an >uncompressed image over the network instead of waiting for the router to decompress the archive.
I like the uncompressed image idea, we are exploring that.
Thanks for the feedback and we'll keep you posted.

Sbc functionality on CRS or ASR9k?
Hi all,
I was able to find an example of SBC config for IOS XR running on 12k router but I would like to know if same functionality is supported on other two IOS XR devices, i.e. CRS series or ASR 9000?
Thanks,
TenaroIOS XR 3.7 was actually the latest version to support SBC features in CRS.
4.2 for example doesn't support it:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/crs/software/crs_r4.2/general/release/notes/reln_42crs.html
Cisco Session Border Controller (SBC) is not supported on any platform in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 4.2. Cisco IOS XR Software Release 3.7 is the last release that supports SBC. -
Connecting CRS-1 to CISCO7609-S
Hello,
We are in the design phase for upgrading the exisiting POS connectivity between the P & PE router.
1- A new module will be installed in the CRS-1 (2-10GE-WL-FLEX)
2- A new module will be installed in the cisco7609-S (7600-ES20-2X10G)
3- XFP-10GER-192IR+ will be used
i would like to know if the old configuration of the old POS interfaces will remain the same on the new interfaces (just we need to remove the pos framing sdh & pos scramble-atm commands) or there are additional configuration needed?
BROk, so we are migrating from POS to 10GE Ethernet. Definitely any POS/SONET/SDH related configuration won't be needed on the new ethernet link.
In general, as we change L1/L2 then all L1/L2 configs would be different. L3 and above would be the same.

/A

The packet rate mib 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.7 for 7600 seem not support by ASR9K, anyone can share the packet rate /s mib for ASR9K
This is generally computed offline by the mgmt station based on the packet counters (from the IFMIB) and computed over time.
A great package that does this is MRTG you may like to mess around with.
alternatively you could possibly pull the XR interface rate out via XML.

MPLS PE/P 7600 or ASR 1000
hi,
We are planning to change our 7206VXR as P/PE routers. Currently we only have 2 nodes that is running on STM-1. on each node we have 7206VXR NPEG2 that is acting as PE and P router.
our requirement is getting bigger we will be upgrading our WAN links to STM-4 soon (and to STM-12 in the future) and we will also be adding more nodes.
I'm confused on what platform would be best for our network, 7600 or ASR1000......7600???? 7606 or 7604? ASR 1000???? ASR1004 or ASR 1006.
I want my router to accomodate the growth in the network.
I need your advise/expertise on this.
Thanks in advance....
RachelleHi,
ASR1k runs IOS-XE, which is IOS. It does not run IOS-XR. ASR9k runs IOS-XR.
The newer platforms, like ASR1k, ASR9k, have more throughput, while 7200 e.g. has a bigger
range in different kinds of port adaptors. If you only plan to use ethernet interfaces for example, then
you could only look at the newer platforms like ASR1k, ASR9k, or even 7600 and choose
a specific model based on the number of ports you'd need.
Thanks,

CRS 4.0.4 to 4.2.3 Upgrade
Dear all,
I have to upgrade a couple of CRS nodes from 4.0.4 to 4.2.3.
These nodes are in production, and I will carry out this upgrade in a maintenance window, however even so I am forced to minimise downtime.
Is there any way I can do this by upgrading one RP at the time ? I have a single node running 4.2.3 already, can this be used to clone a single RP S/W, which is then moved to another chassis...leading to a faster upgrade ?
I am expecting that only downtime will be when S/W is pushed to LCs.
The Cisco guides are straightforward and I have used them before for similar tasks, but for newly rolled out nodes, and never needed a quick fix until now.
TIA
/SamirHi Samir,
this approach will not reduce the upgrade time significantly.
First, there is probably some misconception in the approach when you say "push the software" to the line cards. In CRS and ASR9K systems, the image is not simply loaded from the RP to the LC, we have a complete file system locally (in a storage device local to the line cards) and software is booted from it.
Your approach of "baking" a PRP from another router (I suppose you plan to insert it in the RP1 slot of another router or to do it in the lab), when you will want to upgrade your router, you'll have to:
- eject the remaining PRP present in RP0 slot, the whole router stops at that moment
- insert the upgraded PRP in RP0 slot, the RP0 boots up and all line cards, fabric cards and other components (fan controllers, etc) boot an realize they are not running the proper image, they will require the RP to provide the MBI and start loading this minimum boot image, then they will start to construct the file system for each "node" (installing all the packages, SMUs, etc). This operation will take quite a long time and all the line cards and fabric cards will reload again to boot on the proper file structure.
In your case, if you use the "normal" install add/activate approach, it will offer several avantages:
- the impact on traffic will be only when the reload is triggered by the install activate phase (all the install add phase is impact less)
- you can rollback to the previous software version
- it's a fully tested and supported approach
- finally, using a production router to bake (or clone if you prefer) a PRP implies that two boxes on your network will work with only one RP at some point, and it doesn't seem to be a very wise thing to do.

MULTIPLE USERS 10G RAC ORACLE_HOME INSTALL WITH ASM/CRS
Hi,
We need to install multiple 10g RAC databases on a two node Sun servers. Below is our configuration:
1) Sun Solaris (ver 10) with Sun Cluster 3.2
2) One ASM/CRS install (by 1 OS account)
3) Four ORACLE_HOME 10g database install (by 4 different OS user accounts)
We would like to use one ASM instance for all four databases with appropriate privileges.
OS User: OS Group
======== =========
oraasm dbaasm - (ASM and CRS install owner)
ora1 dbaora1 - first db owner
ora2 dbaora2 - second db owner
ora3 dbaora3 - third db owner
ora4 dbaora4 - fourth db owner
I understand that certain privileges need to be shared between ASM/CRS and DB owners. Please let me know the steps to be followed to complete this install.
Thanks in advance.Hi
Please read that: Documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B10766_08/intro.htm
- You can install and operate multiple Oracle homes and different versions of Oracle cluster database software on the same computer as described in the following points:
-You can install multiple Oracle Database 10g RAC homes on the same node. The multiple homes feature enables you to install one or more releases on the same machine in multiple Oracle home directories. However, each node can have only one CRS home.
-In addition, you cannot install Oracle Database 10g RAC into an existing single-instance Oracle home. If you have an Oracle home for Oracle Database 10g, then use a different Oracle home, and one that is available across the entire cluster for your new installation. Similarly, if you have an Oracle home for an earlier Oracle cluster database software release, then you must also use a different home for the new installation.
If the OUI detects an earlier version of a database, then the OUI asks you about your upgrade preferences. You have the option to upgrade one of the previous-version databases with DBUA or to create a new database using DBCA. The information collected during this dialog is passed to DBUA or DBCA after the software is installed.
- You can use the OUI to complete some of the de-install and re-install steps for Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters if needed.
Note:
Do not move Oracle binaries from one Oracle home to another because this causes dynamic link failures.
. If you are using ASM with Oracle database instances from multiple database homes on the same node, then Oracle recommends that you run the ASM instance from an Oracle home that is distinct from the database homes. In addition, the ASM home should be installed on every cluster node. This prevents the accidental removal of ASM instances that are in use by databases from other homes during the de-installation of a database's Oracle home.
