CRT Replacement

hi...i got an iMac G3 333Mhz...and its Flyback is broke (crackling sound and cannot start up).
I considered to change the CRT into LCD, but it will loose its original feel...;P
What I want to ask is Can I change the iMac CRT with other Brand CRT (complete with its Flyback), because its rather difficult to find the FBT in my country.

I would be difficult to replace the internal CRT with an LCD. But it would be relatively easy to use an external VGA display, even an LCD display if it has the standard 4:3 aspect ratio (not widescreen) with VGA input. You can do this on the older tray-loaders, but not the newer slot-loaders.
On the tray-loader iMac G3, if you open the bottom panel, you will see two or three connections (the third one is for the IR sensor - not present on all tray-loaders). One of those connectors is the internal video connector. It is the one that looks like an old-style video connector with the two thumb screws. You can test to confirm the problem is on the analog video board by disconnecting that internal video cable and attempting to start up your iMac. You won't see anything in the display, but if it should sound like it starting up. Once it sounds like it got to the Desktop, you can press the power button and then Return to shut down.
However, that internal video port is not a VGA connector; it is an old-style Apple video port.
You need to get one of these adapters

There are other similar ones, but I know this type works. Connect this type of adapter to the internal video port on the iMac. Then, you can connect a standard VGA cable and display to the adapter. The iMac should start up now, because you are bypassing the hardware failure on the analog video board. With the 333 MHz model, it has a whopping 6mb of VRAM and should be able to go as high as 1600x1200 at thousands of colors, or 1280x1024 at millions of colors (if the VGA display is large enough to handle it). The standard 1024x768 (and lower) will also work, of course.

How to replace a CRT against a TFT-monitor

Hello,
I bought me a used g3 imac. Its CRT is broken, I could repair it but CRTs are somehow outdated. I would like to replace it against a 15 inch tft-monitor because of its lower energy consumption, better contrast ratio and lower weight.
I need some information about the internal pinouts of my G3 Computer motherbord (400 MHz), which belongs to the MAC family number M5521. There are two plugs: one is in the front and the other (bigger) one is located in back of the computer. Maybe someone can give me a hint where to look for detailed information concering that hardware stuff. I want to use an ATX power supply to support the motherboard and the tft-monitor with power.

Replacing an eMac's CRT

I have an opportunity to buy an eMac with a bad CRT. Would it work to replace the CRT in the eMac with one from an old monitor that I have laying around? I am aware of the risks of dealing with CRTs, but I think I can handle it.

I think it would be a lot more headache than it would be worth. Have you confirmed that it's the CRT that's failed and not a different component? Video failures are far more often the flyback transformer or the video circuitry that's failed rather than the CRT itself, and I'll just about guarantee that the circuitry out of the monitor will not work.
Probably best just to buy another, working computer and see if anyone wants your dead eMac for parts. Working 1.25Ghz eMacs have sold for as little as $75.00 on eBay, so I don't think the effort of trying to repair your current units would be worth it.

Replace CRT with LCD

Hi every one . I have looked at the conversion to a LCD from the eMac CRT . i was thinking Could i remove the CRT and just run a LCD off the external monitor port ? or will the computer not work if the CRT is taken out ?

I take it that the repair isn't going well then?

Green Screen and Freezing on G3 iMac CRT

Hi - My son's Snow Slot Load 500mxh G3 iMac has recently developed some problems. It happened not long after updating to Tiger but seems not to be related to that. I installed the firmware upgrade before updating and the install went fine. It was working fine for a few weeks but started freezing up at random times requiring the power button to be held to restart. It would then restart and work fine but over the last couple weeks, the freeze ups have become so frequent that it's basically not worth bothering with. The freeze ups seem to have some sort of mechanical aspect to them - there is an actual flash or flicker or surge type thing as if the power was interupted. I have plugged the iMac into different power sources, etc. to be sure that it isn't somehow something in the houses wiring but that has not effect. In addition, in the last week or so, the screen has taken on a pronounced green cast. At first this problem was intermitent but now is pretty much permanent (it did come on once properly) It still works fine in terms of resolution, positioning, etc., no weird artifacts, just green. Both of the problems persist even if the iMac is started in OS9 or from a CD. I ran the Apple Hardware Diag CD and it gave a clean bill of health on everything....hmmm!
My guess is that it is a hardware problem and the obvious choice would be the video board. I don't want to put it out to pasture since it works great for my son but I also don't want to put bunches of time and $$$ into it swapping out different boards to try to figure the problem. Does anyone know any fairly definitive tests to determine if it is the Video board or, if not, what it is?

No only the PAV sounds like it's going bad. The fact that the CRT lights up means that it's good. The silver box on the back of the CRT that Apple refers to as the Video Board is part of the PAV. In fact when you replace the PAV you want to keep that same Video Board with the CRT so it involves cutting and splicing of 2 wires.

Most likely it's the flyback transformer on the PAV that is going and when that goes it's usually it's the Anode section that dies.

Well if the Anode section dies then mute point because the HV will be gone anyway.

If you replace the PAV (deadly voltages involved! Also working PAVs are hard to come by) you wouldn't need an external monitor because the internal one would then work. My son has a 700 Snow that I dropped a DVD-ROM from a 500 Graphite into. Had to use Pacifist to get it to work. Hooked up an external LCD. Now he's watching Pirates II in stereo. He also uses it for Garage Band.

Thanks for the information. That's plug looks exactly like what I need. However, I am still wondering about the other half of the solution that involves the monitor's power source. Currently, I am using this monitor on an old B&W G3. The power cord that comes from the monitor plugs directly into the back of the G3 tower to get its power. That connection is a female plug rather than the standard male wall-socket plug. I am guessing that I could just replace that monitor cord with a standard computer power cord, plug it in, and have the monitor get its power directly from the wall socket rather than through the computer.
Does that make sense?

Mini display to VGA weirdness - need help connecting to CRT

I am new here and recently purchased a Mac Mini (2011, 2.3 Mhz i5 model).
I am probably in the vast minority as far as monitor choices go, as I am using a NEC FE2111SB CRT monitor. 20" viewable, looks good or better than most LCDs, so I see no need to replace it. I have the mac hooked up via a mini display to VGA adapter and it works, but has some weird problems.
When booting to Windows 7 through bootcamp, the screen starts off all white (like normal), but then goes black. Nothing. I wait a while, then my normal Windows login screen eventually pops up. So for whatever reason, the entire Windows boot screen (one with win 7 logo, etc) won't show up at all.
The boot screen does show up if hooked to a LCD. But I tested two CRTs, and the boot screen is black for both, no signal.
I was guessing that perhaps the boot screen used a weird resolution or refresh rate through Apple's EFI, so I figured I'd try several things. First was simply changing the resolution on the mac side of things. And then I noticed other weirdness. If Lion is set to high resolutions, say 1200x960, or 1600x1200 (or anything besides 1024x768), then I also lose the white (apple) screen that typically pops up when starting the machine. The white screen being what you see when it first starts, then you can press the keyboard to get the apple OS choices (if bootcamp is installed).
So basically what I have is: if I leave lion at 1024x768, I get the white apple boot screen, and it boots into lion normally.
If lion is anything besides 1024x768, I lose the white boot screen, and am loading lion blindly, just waiting for the lion login to hopefully pop up eventually.
If lion is set at 1024x768, then I do get the mac boot screen, yet bootcamp/windows is all black until windows 7 boots up. I have not found any resolution or refresh rate at all that will allow me to see the windows 7 boot screen when using bootcamp, and this adapter + CRT.
Any suggestions? I have tried two minidisplay to vga adapters, apple's and rocketfish, both had the same problems. Although I found the apple branded one to be a little more finicky than the rocketfish adapter.

Possibly too many adapters.
Signal strength dropped off when I used minidisplay-to-DVI/DVI-to-VGA/VGA-keyboard-viedo-mouse splitter, and "nothing" came through. minidisplay-to-DVI/DVI cable worked fine.

HT4718 Follow the instructions in "Installing Lion on an external storage device" also if you are REPLACING an internal hard drive.

Even though you are using Internet "Recovery", the program will not format your hard disk for you. In fact, once you get to the recovery screen, it will show no hard drive is even available, which at first caused me to believe I had been delivered a dead on arrival hard drive. Instead, exit the Recovery program and enter the Disk Utility program and partition your new, uprade hard drive as apple instructed for an "external" hard driver. After that just proceed with the Recovery program.

Your iMac has room for one hard drive and the optical drive (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, etc.). Any ribbon cable supplied with the hard drive or a Y-splitter power cable is of no use in the iMac. The new drive must replace the original, because the two can't coexist internally. Additionally, you need to configure the new Seagate as "master," since the optical drive is "slave." Refer to Seagate's accompanying documentation, for instructions on setting the small jumper(s) to designate the drive as "master." The drive may have been factory-configured for "cable select," which isn't supported in your iMac. After you get that straightened out, you'll need to boot the computer from the Tiger installer CD and use "Disk Utility" to format the new drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume. You may also want to partition it as well.
Incidentally, you should post any future questions about your iMac in the Forum dedicated to the CRT-style iMacs. You'll receive informative answers to any questions that you might have, from those who are thoroughly familiar with your model iMac.

Apple TV on CRT TV (component to s-video)

Hi all
newb here, so here's the story.
Apple iTunes film rentals have hit the UK, wohoo! The 160GB Apple TV is literally US$220 more in the UK. I'm off to NYC in 3 weeks so I'm going to get one there but I've we problem. My CRT Sony 32" TV (which I'm not replacing) doesn't have Component or HDMI inputs (which the Apple TV only gives ).
I've figured 3 options:
1. Buy a special converter box (found 3 so far), that takes Component and on the fly converts to S-video - all around £70/$140
2. Buy a new AV Receiver/AMP that converts video signals on the fly (cheapest decent one is £400 Yamaha DSP-AX763, Denon and Onkyo do it too)
3. Get a DVD Recorder that will accept Component and output s-video on the fly (£100+)
But all of these cost more than I want! Suddenly I remembered ye olde VHS VCRs! Does anyone know of a PAL VCR that accepts Component but will output s-video (or RGB Scart would be even better) please? Or any better suggestions.

IMac CRT discolored

Hello from sunny middle Tennessee. I have an iMac 400 DV SE 10-99 build, slot loader with an upgrade 60Gb hard drive and one gig of memory. I love my baby and have lots of USB and Firewire toys for her to play with. However she has lately been turning pink towards the right side of the screen. I have the harmon kardon sound sticks nearby but I don't think they are close enough to cause this distortion. any ideas?

It could be an environmental thing - try moving everything a little farther away from her. It could be electrical, too - try a different power outlet, or a different electrical circuit in your residence. Small motors (pencil sharpener, paper shredder), fluorescent lights, and magnets and speakers can interfere.
It is possible also that your iMac is experiencing other problems - CRTs and the HIGH VOLTAGE components that go along with them tend to degrade with age and heat. This could also be causing your problem, in which case repair or replacement may be in order. Repair, however, is most likely not cost-effective, and you would be better off getting a new or used machine to replace this one.

I have a Powermac G5 I am using to edit in Final Cut Pro using High Def footage. I just bought an LG CRT HD TV/Monitor. This was to replace my current 23" Apple Display as my #1 monitor. The trouble is that the resolution options offered for the new LG are MUCH lower than what are offered for the old (not HD) Apple display?

That's what you get for buying an HD CRT TV. A monitor will always have a MUCH higher resolution than a TV, even an LCD TV or CRT TV (even if it's a HD TV). Go back to your 23" monitor. It will display HD better than any HD TV.

24" LCD AND 19" CRT. Any problem?

My current set up is two dual 19" CRTs and the ATI 9800 256MB card.
I want to move up to a widescreen LCD, but am aware of a couple limitations with a 24" LCD.
These being:
1. You have more screen real estate with two 19" than with one 24".
2. CRT is supposedly a better image.
So, my thinking is to move up to a 24"LCD and keep one of my 19" CRTs active as a 2nd/palette monitor. that way I get more screen real estate, and a nice CRT handy if needed.
Can anyone tell me if I'd get eye-strain or headache or something from switching my eyes back and forth from a CRT to LCD?
Any reason I wouldn't want a dual monitor set up where one is LCD and one is CRT?

Accidental damage is not covered under the warranty - it is a limited manufacturer's warranty only, not insurance.
If you live near an Apple Store, call the store and ask or make an appointment there to confirm if only the glass panel needs to be replaced, if the store does that, and how much.

Replaced display even WORSE !!!

Ok, my iMac G5 is almost three years, I bought AppleCare, which is about to expire... that's my main concern as my iMac display started to go bad these last months. Screen became lighter and lighter in the bottom, to the point of:
In Photoshop, if I select a solid color in a document that is at the top side of my screen, then I drag the same document and select the same color at the bottom side of my screen, Photoshop will identify it as two distinct colors, even being the same document... the same solid color!!! And I work as a graphic and web designer... unacceptable!!!!!!
*My screen was going really bad...* not just the gradually lighter screen at the bottom, but it started to show ghost images, as those images we used to see in older CRT monitors. I took a couple pictures of those ghost images where the little apple logo was seen on the top left hand side of my screen, and presented it to Apple when I brought my computer.
*Ok... AppleCare, Apple agreed to replace my LCD ... that should be it! But it wasn't!*
Yesterday I stopped by at the North Michigan Av store in Chicago to pick up my iMac and I got surprised my iMac display was replaced by one that had more problems than the previous already defective display I brought in!!! This time the display had dark spots on both lower corners of the screen as if the lights were weaker, and there was also a small darker spot on the center of the screen, as if the pixels or the lights underneath it were getting weaker as well.
I said I wouldn't take it home... no chances, that's my work tool and the reason *I bought AppleCare was exactly to make sure at least for three years I'd be covered for any issue.*
The Genius guy even told me I wouldn't have to expect things to be 100%, and that there are things that can escape their control... that's ridiculous! *I told him NOTHING can escape Apple's control if I have AppleCare*... the computer has a problem and I expect the problem to be either fixed or have my iMac replaced. Not my fault Apple doesn't produce the iMac 17 inches any more. It really seems that Apple is fixing these iMacs using possibly returned LCDs from old iMacs. Oh! I forgot to say that the LCD was kind of warped and it didn't fit perfectly inside the unit, leaving some gaps on the corners. The Genius guy called it "cosmetic" details and that he wouldn't guarantee that the new LCD would be perfectly fitting inside the iMac but his concern was the brightness.
I just bought a really CHEAP LCD monitor for my Mac mini ... 150 bucks and the screen brightness is solid and consistent... the same I would expect from an Apple product.
I told the Genius guy I WOULDN'T accept a display that's brighter at the bottom with the excuse my computer is 3 years old and can't be perfect. That's why Apple sells AppleCare ... and I don't care if it's almost three years! My iMac is still under the warrant for another month!
*I am really frustrated and mad I don't have my work tool* and I see Apple trying to fix my computer with parts that are even worse than the original defective one.

NEW iMAC!!!
I was so frustrated... I went to pick up my iMac and the third screen was even worse than the second... that was worse than the first...
The Genius guy tried to push me the defective screen again... saying she couldn't see any problem ... that the screen seemed to be fine!
I didn't want to waste my time again and asked for the store manager... a very polite young guy... he listened to my story and offered to have the screen replaced again... it'd be the fourth screen! plus the SuperDrive issue that wasn't even reported by the person who talked to me on the phone last time... She assured me she had entered this extra information on the repair ticket...
After (I believe) he saw my sincere frustration on having to work with a screen that isn't close to Apple's standards... *he decided to give me a new machine*!
I was SO FRUSTRATED! I told him I don't have ANY GAME on my machine! I use it only to create my artwork... *it is my work tool*... and I went with Apple the first time because of the *quality of the products*!
And with my warrant almost expiring I was afraid I would end up with a bad computer in a couple months!
Apple didn't lose a machine by doing that but just kept a *happy customer* who will be back in a couple years for a *higher end product* and will talk well about the company!
Really happy but much more... *FEELING RESPECTED*!

Name of .crl and .crt file missing from HTTP URL in certificate details

Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of building a 2-tier Windows Server 2012 R2 PKI. The CA name of both the offline standalone root CA and enterprise subordinate CA have spaces in it (we'll call the CA name, 'Test Lab Root CA' for point of reference).
When I submitted the certificate request for the subordinate CA to the root CA and viewed the attributes/extensions of the pending request, I noticed the HTTP URL is missing the name of the .crt and .crl file.
The AIA extension reads URL=http://test.domainname.com/pki/.crt
in the issued certificate details.
The CDP extension reads URL=http://test.domainname.com/pki/.crl
in the issued certificate details.
The AIA and CDP location HTTP URLs are configured as http://test.domainname.com/pki/<CertificateName>.crt and http://test.domainname.com/pki/<CRLNameSuffix><DeltaCRLAllowed>.crl, respectively on the
root CA.
The LDAP URL shows the .crt and .crl file name (with %20 replacing the spaces) perfectly fine. The LDAP URL is configured using variables as well. It's just the HTTP URL that is missing the name of the file altogether.
I have read about the issue where spaces are not being replaced with %20 in the URL on Windows Server 2012 and a hotfix is available for that issue. But this issue seems to be slightly different and I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2. I tried installing
the hotfix to see if it would help, but the hotfix can't install because it doesn't apply to Server 2012 R2.
I've been trying to find a technet discussion or blog article for a week to see if anyone has seen this and what the fix is, but I'm coming up empty. I only find talks about %20 not replacing the space in the name.
Does anyone have any insight to my particular issue? I don't want to issue the subordinate CA certificate until I know the HTTP URL populates the CRL and CRT file name correctly. I can get around this by typing out the name of the file (with spaces and not
%20... e.g. http://test.domainname.com/pki/Test Lab Root CA.crl) in the URL via the registry and the URL displays the name of the file (with %20 in the name) when I do another certificate request and check the attributes/extensions in the
pending request. However, I prefer to avoid manually typing out the name of the file in the registry. I'd like to use the variables if at all possible.
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The URLs should be set to the following for an offline CA:*certutil -setreg CA\CRLPublicationURLs "65:%WINDIR%\system32\CertSrv\CertEnroll\%%3%%8%%9.crl\n6:http://test.domainname.com/pki/%%3%%8%%9.crl"*
*certutil -setreg CA\CACertPublicationURLs "1:%WINDIR%\system32\CertSrv\CertEnroll\%%1_%%3%%4.crt\n2:http://**test.domainname.com**/pki/%%1_%%3%%4.crt"*
Just a clarification here, if you're running the above certutil commands at
the command prompt you only need single % characters in the command line.
The double % characters are only required if the commands are being run in
a batch file.
