Crucial M4/USB 3.0 mounting problem

Hi!
I've got an issue on my 15" MacBook Pro Retina. I have a 128GB Crucial M4 2.5" SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure, but the only way I can get it to mount is if I turn the laptop off, plug in the drive and turn the laptop on again. My wife has a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro and it works ALMOST fine on there. Sometimes it takes a few plugs/unplugs to get it working, but it's about a 80% success rate.
Any help would be hugely appreciated as it's a bit of a pain to shut down and boot up just to get an external drive working.
Thanks!

In case it helps, here is the info for the external drive from System Information.

  • USB flash storage mounted as read-only filesystem

    Hello all,
I'm new to Arch Linux and trying to migrate all my works to arch. Installed KDE, GNOME3, and hardware drivers successfully But I have problems with USB flash disks. When plugging a usb device, system mounts it as a readonly filesystem. so I can't change its contents. It always happens to my flash disk, but flash disk of my friend is ok!
I tried to mount manually with super user access, but no hope. It says:
    [root@myhost soroush]# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/
mount: warning: /mnt/ seems to be mounted read-only.

  • USB HDD not mounting on 10.4.9 but does in 10.4

Posted this in Tiger forum too (I know, probably not really supposed to), but I thought I'd post it here too.
I know there's nothing wrong with the drive whatsoever, because it mounts on PCs, and it mounts when booted from both other hard drives on the system, on Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.4.0.
I know it used to mount on 10.4.9, too. I thought maybe when I installed a 4-port USB 2 card things would resolve, but they haven't.... so I expect it's a driver (extension) issue.
I deleted a bunch of extensions a while back that I was sure I didn't need... I suppose it's possible I deleted one vital for USB HDD support on the HDD using 10.4.9, only I don't know which it would be... things were self-explanatory in the days of OS 9, not so much with OS X, it would seem.
I didn't notice it until fairly recently since I'd been networking to the external HDD via another computer as the built-in 10BT was sadly faster than the USB 1.1 card I had installed prior.
Anyway.... since I assume this is an extensions problem (it says when I turn on the drive that a certain extension is missing, but I can't remember which), can anyone tell me what particular extension it is that enables USB Hard Drives?
By the way, USB flash drives mount and run at USB 2 speeds just fine.

    "AppleXsanFilter.kext"
That is likely an extension for Storage Area Networks. If your Mac is complaining about it, it probably has unsatisfied external references in some of the Mass Storage Extensions. I don't know why you would need a lot of stuff in those folders, but they are tiny. You get no payback from throwing them out.
To fix those complaints, presuming the extension is located in the correct folder, you need to repair permissions (so that the System owns it) and delete the cache files named:
    extensions.kextcache
    extensions.mkext
which are pre-linked versions of most of the kext files. Then your Mac will recreate the cache files with the newly fixed-up kext added.

  • Narrowing down "iPod won't mount" problem

Regarding the "iPod won't mount" problem that has been posted a number of times: is anyone having this problem with a USB connection or just with a Firewire connection?
I'm using Firewire and can't get my iPod to mount. I don't have a USB connector for the iPod and I thought I'd do a little research on the problem before I go buy a USB connector.

My 4th generation Ipod would not mount with the firewire but worked fine with USB.

  • USB thumb drive mounting issues in Lion?

    Hi all,
I just installed Lion on my mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro a couple of days ago.  All seemed to be going great until I tried to use my USB thumb drives.  I have four of these (3 Sandisk and 1 Imation), and none will mount.  When I go into Disk Utility I can see them, but when I try to mount them manually the response is "Mount Failed" and some text regarding running Disk First Aid.  However, even when I repair the volume, it still won't mount.  This happens with all four drives,   and I used them all without incident a few days ago when I still had Snow Leopard installed. They are all formatted for FAT32.  I've seen a few scattered messages about USB and NTFS mounting issues, but it appears to be an isolated problem.  Anybody else having this issue?  If so, are there any workarounds?  I'd hate to have to revert back to Snow Leopard just to use my thumb drives.

Try to use the disk utility an format one of your Thumb Drive, and see if it can mount.

  • USB Drive not mounting on Mac Pro, mounts on other Macs?

    Hello.
I have a USB drive that mounts on just about every Mac (just about because I haven't tried on them all) in our studio. Intel & PPC, 10.5.6 and 10.4.11. But, when I try and mount it on my Mac Pro, it won't mount. The only difference (other than it being a Mac Pro) is that it's running 10.5.7 — though, I have an iMac at home running 10.5.7 and it mounts there no problem as well?
I've confirmed the USB ports working (all of them), but for some reason, this drive doesn't mount (can't see it in Disk Utility or other 3rd party drive utilities)?
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

Yea, I've already tried both of those things and neither have worked.
So weird. I've read a lot of reports on these boards about 10.5.7 and USB not playing well together, but the fat that I've been able to get it to mount on a 10.5.7 machine...?

  • Coping iso file and mounting problem

    Hi
I am using Windows 8.1 Update Enterprise 64 bit and Windows ADK.
I noticed that, if I select the "Environment of the deployment tools and creations images" and I click on the "Run as Administrator" item of his Pop-Up menu and I mount on a iso image of windows 8.1 Update, when I run the command
    robocopy <Drive_Letter>:\"<Windows_Files_Path>" /e
to copy all its files in a directory and the command
    dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:"<Windows_Files_Path>"\install.wim /Index:<Image_Index> /MountDir:"<Mount_Directory_Path>"
to mount an image volume, this error appears:
    Error: 0xc1510111
Not have permission to mount and modify this image.
However, if I copy these files through the "file explorer" window, the mounting of this volume image is working properly. How come?
    Thanks
    Bye

    is this really your problem?
Really, this is not a MDT related question. perhaps a general Windows Setup forum would be a better place to ask this question.

  • USB drive only mounts as Local Drive Need it to mount as USB Drive to create recovery drive

subject pretty much says it all.  Using an HP Sleekbook 15, it tells me to make recovery disk.  I opt for the USB drive option and buy a new Sandisk Cruze Glide.  Plugged it in.  Started Recovery program to make disk.  Program tells me to insert the USB drive or plugin my DVD burner.  I check the file explorer and find the USB drive is mounted as Local Drive E:.  No amount of inserting and removal will trigger the program to continue.
Doc read on SanDisk forum implied this is a windows 8 compatibility issue where Win 8 requires new USB drives that meet Win 8 compatibility to mount as Local devices.
I saw here that the USB drive MUST be a removable device inorder to be made bootable.
Help! this is inconsistant and negates the whole reason for using removable media if it can't be made to be seen as a boot recovery drive.
I need a solution, can those who know please advise.

Not all USB 3.0 is Windows 8 compatible. It will have the compability logo on the back or front of the package.
I have run across several interesting articles that mention Windows 8 can create the Recovery Drive with I assume any flash drive.

  • 10.5.8 disk mounting problem

I updated to 10.5.8 and decided I would download the photoshop elements trial off Adobe's website. It was at 365 MB of 1.27 GB and it suddenly came up "mounting failed" I am currently trying to download it again, but my internet connection is slow so it will be awhile before I see if it happens again at 365 MB. Has anyone else had disk mounting problems in 10.5.8?

Speaking as someone who works a lot with PSE, I would say the odds are very high that this is an Adobe problem rather than a 10.5.8 problem. Wait a while and try the download again.

It would be nice to have a record of any externals that are being mounted on an OS X client by a user.
    MacMini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok, that's it. I read a few posts in the "...SuperDrive won't accept my CD.." section. and it seems some people are just swapping optical drives like mad, ready to accept that the kit is crap, and "...oh, well, I sure hope this one works better...".
But one guy had the brains to have a look inside. Turns out dust had accumulated in the drive and on the connectors, and when he cleaned them, and unplugged and replugged them, it worked fine. So that's what I did. Took it out and put it back in. Amazing the stuff I cleared out! I also un- and re-plugged the power cable and the data ribbon at the mutha board and bingo!. We have disk, and I can breathe again.
Recommend to others they pretend they've bought a new drive, do a remove and reinstall and be very fastidious. You may not need a new one after all. I just love it that stuff can still be FIXED!
Thanks to Lou and all of you who share your experiences. It's like my brain is suddenly soooo huge...

  • Sleep/wakeup problem discovered - Apple USB modem is the problem.

Ever since Leopard (every release), I've been having frequent problems with my iMac not being able to wake up from sleep mode. Would not respond to mouse or keyboard. I tracked this down to a problem going to sleep. The machine would appear to go to sleep, but something was still running inside the iMac. A fan?? Disconnecting the Apple USB Modem from the iMac USB port fixed the problem!!! This is an all Apple problem. Apple needs to address compatibility with their modem, which they still sell.

I would call AppleCare and let them know you are having this problem. It is possible that it simply will be fixed by replacing the modem. If replacing the modem does not solve the problem, then call AppleCare again, and ask them to file a bug report on your behalf and find out why Energy Saver doesn't work with the modem. Many third party USB devices create problems for all USB peripherals if Energy Saver is enabled. Make sure you have you have none connected. If you don't have any connected that strengthens your case with AppleCare. You can always use Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver until the issue is fixed.

  • Some USB accessories will mount on desktop some won't

Have a thumb drive used to mount great in keyboard USB now it won't, will mount just fine on my PC laptop whats up? Bought a new 4G thumb drive it mounts fine, whats the difference? Have a Droid phone used to mount great now it won't whats up? Bought a Callaway upro golf course GPS (is Mac compatible) must log on to download courses, plugged into USB won't mount. Plugged it into PC laptop mounts fine logs on to web sight downloads courses whats up? Used the Disk Utility to see if the drives are there, the iMac sees the drives can name the drives can tell me how big the drives are but I can't touch the drives in anyway shape or form whats up? Can't mount them at all.

The one that really gets me is the Callaway GPS golf course range finder. In the disk utilities the device is shown but every possible button is grayed out even the mount button. under info it states all the characteristics of the drive the name, size etc. it does say the device is unformated but on a PC laptop I was able to load all the courses on the devise so I know its working. I thought a iMac would be able to see anything you USB to it. In the manual of the device it says if you plug into a mac an Icon should mount and away you go not in my case. Thanks for the help though.

  • USB mounting problem

I have done my best to research this, but have not found a solution.
After a new Arch installation on a new machine (Dell Precision T3400) I am unable to change the permissions (even as root!) on files once they are transferred to the usbstick (a Code 1 error message is returned). Other operations, such as copying, moving and deleting occur as usual. I have also noticed that as soon as files are transferred to the USB stick, the permissions get changed (but not the ownership), as if whatever is reading the stick is also changing the permissions.
It is not the stick -- the same stick performs normally on every other computer I use it on.
    fstab: /dev/sdc1   /mnt/usbstick  vfat   rw,user,auto,sync  0    0
(basically the same as on 3 other Linux machines I use, all running Arch).
When mounted, sdc1 has ownership  root:disk.  I have added myself to the disk group. /mnt/usbstick has myself as the owner.
Not a major problem, just slightly irritating.
    Thea

    Thanks, Pheon --
I just noticed I made a mistake in giving my fstab line, it should be:
    /dev/sdc1   /mnt/usbstick   vfat   rw,user,noauto,sync   0   0
(so "noauto" instead of "auto" in the mount options)
As I indicated, this is not a USB stick problem (same stick works just fine on other machines) -- also, in my attempts to troubleshoot this, I changed the filesystem on the USB stick to VFAT -- previously, it was whatever the default is when it comes out of the factory, and at that time the fstab line looked like:
    /dev/sdc1   /mnt/usbstick   auto   rw,user,noauto,sync   0   0
Same situation, i.e. changing the filesystem did not affect the problem in any way.
    Any other ideas?
