Crucial M500 or M550 better for upgrading MBP13?

Hello for everyone!
Which is the best SSD for upgading Macbook Pro 13 Early 2011?
Crucail M500 or M550?
I'm talking about 240-256 GB range.
I had a bad experience with Samsung 840 Pro which didn't work with my Mac properly.
Now I want more stable and fast enough (I think it will be with every SSD onboard) SSD as system disk.
Thank you all!

Go with the M550 - it's faster than the M500, has a different Marvell controller and is just the 'best' drive, now, that Crucial makes.
Stay away from the Plextor - I don't believe that you can upgrade the firmware using a Mac.
Good luck,
Clinton

I don't see any DDR3L on the page for the RAM that would fit your model -> http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM.
But the answer is that it doesn't really matter - just make certain to get 1333MHz.

  • Lenovo S20-30 laptop SSD upgrade - Crucial M500

    Here's what I did:
    Using original S20-30 configuration:
1 Download Windows 8.1 ISO - bootable setup installation disk image - save on desktop:
    http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/windows-8-1-download/
2 Download Rufus software - create USB bootable drive - install Rufus:
    http://rufus.akeo.ie/
Settings for Rufus - all default except: Partition Scheme & Target System: GPT for UEFI
3 Run Rufus with target USB drive (USB 3.0, port on left of keyboard), using ISO - power off once done.
4 Open S20-30 (11 screws, 2 hidden under back rubber feet nearest screen hinges)
5 Remove existing HDD, insert new SDD (Crucial M500 in this case) - replace laptop case.
6 Hold FN & F2 keys - enter BIOS - SSD should appear - change SATA controller mode from AHCI to compatible - save & exit - power off
7 Hold FN & F12 keys - press power on - Boot Manager - choose USB drive
8 Windows Setup should run - when target drive appears, if any partitions are there, remove them so Windows can establish new GPT partitions
9 Once Windows is running, re-install all Lenovo drivers & upgrade to Windows 8.1 Update
    Good Luck!

I've just tried mine and WITH the USB drive in I get 3 choices:
    1 Windows Boot Manager
    EFI USB
    EFI Network 0
Maybe your USB drive isn't formatted correctly as a bootable Windows installation drive - check that?

  • Replacing my HDD in my Early 2011 Macbook Pro...Trying to decide between Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb and Crucial M500 240 gb. Samsung is faster but less "mac-friendly". Should I opt for the Crucial due to the "mac-friendliness"?

I have a S.M.A.R.T error on my current Hitachi drive that came with me Early 2011 Macbook pro. Want to upgrade to SSD.
Trying to decide between Samsung 840 EVO 250gb and Crucial M500 240gb, at this gb range, the Samsung is faster and uses less wattage....ONE PROBLEM...I have read many user experiences that note it is much less mac-friendly...
The software samsung  offers is not IOS compatible and some report lower than expected speeds after installation...Also apparently the RAPID MODE of the drive, the fastest drive mode is nonexistant when installed on a Macbook pro?
Should I opt for the slower and more power cosuming Crucial M500 240gb SSD because it is more Mac-friendly? Does anyone have a Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb SSD installed in their macbook pro? What has been your experience?
    Thanks ahead of time!
    Resoure: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-m500-1tb-ssd,3551.html

I decided against the Evo as there are too many Mac users that have had issues with slow speed on them. Even without these, the main speed that Samsung states for the Evo comes form turbo Write which is a PC only feature as is software dependent.
I'm sorry but Crucials M500 is simply too slow compared to modern drives to be recomended. Read speed is ok, but the write is far too slow for the price.
I've used and installed both a Samsung 840 basic and a Samsung 840 Pro in 2 separate Mac books! and currently have the 840 Pro in my own MacBook Pro and it comes very highly recomended. It's all but the fastest Sata III drive you can buy - A few OCZ drives just edge it but the difference is negligible. Samsung by far have the best reliability though when it comes to SSD's. I've been getting 520Mb/s easily on mine consistently, and without getting a MacBook with a PCIe drive you won't get a faster more reliable drive.
I really would recommend nothing else.

  • I'm begging for help, Windows 8.1 Pro Bitlocker, a Crucial M500, and T420...

I have a Lenovo T420-4177 and a Crucial M500 self-encrypting drive, Win 8.1 Pro. I have made sure that the BIOS is up to date, that TPM is turned on and verified it is v1.2 AND initialized, the BIOS is set to boot ONLY to UEFI OS (i.e. CSM is disabled), BitLocker is configured in Local Group Policy to use hardware encryption. Why is it then that when I try to use BitLocker that it will only use software encryption??? Google has been less than cooperative in providing me clear "how-to check UEFI version" results.

  • MSATA drive for W530 - Crucial M500 480GB

    Hi there,
I would like to fit an SSD to my Thinkpad W530 (2438-2KU) to get a boost in speed and increase in storage capacity.  At the moment I am thinking of a Crucial M500 480GB mSATA Internal SSD (http://images.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F28BD783A5CA7304).  I'd leave my 500GB hard drive installed and mainly use it for data storage
Will the M500 fit my laptop?  Any gotchas or anything else to be aware of?  I'll probably be re-installing the O/S onto the SSD once the new drive is installed.
    Richard.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

i've installed win8.1 on a 480GB m500 mSATA since 4 months and it works faultlessly, in tandem with a Seagate Video 500GB (spindle, 90% of the time stopped) for data and 'special' programs.
Few people know that this lower priced 20nm NAND MLC has reliability and features more akin to the industrial SSDs (OPAL h/w encryption, charge holding caps against power failure tec.) vs. the consumer-level TLCs from Samsung et al.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6884/crucial-micron-m500-review-960gb-480gb-240gb-120gb
The 6 vs. 3Gbps bottleneck of my w520 mSATA may affect only the very large files, which i store exclusively on the ST-Video spindle for obvious reasons. For normal daily operation, 3 and 6Gbps are virtually equal, most files being too small to hit the 3Gbps b-neck. What really matters is the IOPS.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2012 Crucial m500 960gb or Samsung Evo 840 1tb?

    Hello,
So i've done a lot of research and I can't seem to quite get a definite answer.
I've seen many people say that the Samsung Evo 840 is having issues during bootup in the Mid 2012 one but some are saying it's running perfectly fine.
On the other hand, some are saying Crucial is better and guarantees that it will work.
I saw a link on youtube where the person upgrades his mid 2012 with the samsung evo 1tb.
But he has the top spec one.
    Mine are:
    Model Name:
    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:
    MacBookPro9,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:
    2.3 GHz
Has anyone tried upgrading this particular model with either the Crucial or the Samsung Evo?
    Any thoughts?
I'm currently using a Kingston ssdnow v300 120GB with a 500GB HD but always seem to be running out of space on the boot drive which is annoying.
I want to get a large SSD and know that it'll run perfectly for the next 5 years.
    Cheers.

I've had the M500 960GB drive for about 4 months now and I love it - it wasn't a major upgrade for me: I had a Crucial m4 series 512GB but, as I have had such good luck with Crucial, decided to go with the M500 960GB.
There was a new firmware upgrade on March 25th, so if you get the M500, be sure and do the (very simple) firmware upgrade!
    Good luck,
    Clinton
Just ordered the Crucial M550 512Gb SSD ($334) to replace my Crucial M4 256Gb SSD.  The drive is still going strong after 21 months of service but wanted a little larger capacity and faster write speeds.  I will be putting the M4 in a 2009 MacBook Pro even though it's only negotiated link speed will be 3 Gigabit.....so it won't go to waste.
I nearly bought the Samsung EVO 500Gb ($244) but after reading all the reviews I decided that price and a little extra speed was not as important as reliability, compatibility, and the big one support.  I went to Samsung's support page and was not impressed at all.
Im now second guessing my disission to not purchase the lower priced EVO over the M550 or even the M500 because of your previous statement "I would shop strictly for the best price".
    Clinon, my question is:
Is the firmware the same for the M500 and M550?

  • 15-f010wm unable to clean install Windows 8.1 on Crucial M500 SSD

    I have a new 15-f010wm laptop I got from walmart's black friday deal.   I have a 240GB crucial M500 ssd I have already installed.
The problem is Windows 8.1 setup will not see the drive.   Windows 7 sees it just fine.
    What I've tried:
    - updated firmware on SSD
    - upgraded laptop BIOS to latest from f.03 to f.12
    - enable "legacy" mode in bios
    - enable / disable xHCI support
    - tried to load AHCI driver from HP's website (This is the storage driver from the driver page for this laptop)
    - format GPT
    - format NTFS
    - Remove all partitions and volumes with diskpart
    - Tried to upgrade windows 7 clean install to Windows 8.1 via DVD.  Upon reboot setup fails to see drive, reboots into Winows 7
I simply cannot get Windows 8.1 setup to see this drive no matter what I try.   Again,  Windows 7 sees it just fine... in fact, I am creating this thread on the laptop in question with Windows 7 installed on the SSD in question.  The hardware is working fine.

  • Could not get Crucial M500 SSD to work in Thinkpad X201

I have a ThinkPad X201 running Window 7, I have not make any changes to the computer hence all the hardware are original.Except when I recently bought a Crucial M500 SSD, First I use MiniTool to clone the HD to the new SSD. After cloning, I install the SSD into the X201. Window appear to boot up normally with no error message. But soon I notice the Window is not working correctly. For example Window no longer recognize Microsoft published program. For a simple thing like pressing Del to delete a file. A UAC warning will come on to asked if I will allow delete, exe from an unknown publisher to make changes to the computer. Then I tried to repair window by downloading the Window 7 ISO file from microsoft site and proceed to do an upgrade of Window, The upgrading process took quite a while. When everything appear to have finished an error message came on to say "Window setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware". So I gave up on cloning and try to make a clean install of Wondow on the SSD by using the Recovery DVD that came with the computer. The installation process gone through but at the end it ask me to put in the supplementary disk which did not come with the computer. Hence I could not complete the process. I am at a total loss, what can I do next to get it to work?

thanks. I used Minitool to make the cloning which can be booted up from a CD/DVD. I will try to clone with the target in the laptop as suggested and let you know the result.
Crucial normally supplies Apricorn EZ Gig software with their drives. If you don't have it, check Crucial's website and there should be a download available. It should work when it detects a Crucial drive connected.
I didn't understand that you said you were going to order an external enclosure. How did you do your clone with Minitool? If you were using an adapter cable, you should also be able to use it to connect the HDD externally.
The cloning software should take care of everything for you. The cloned disk should be a seamless, plug-and-play version of the original. You should not have to fix anything afterwards. Just boot it and start using it directly.

  • Build in a crucial M500 SSD into a Mac Book Pro 2013 - now it crashes

    Hi guys,
first of all greetings from Germany, I hope you can understand my horrible english
Today I bought a Macbook Pro together with a Crucial M500 SSD harddisk.
With the standard HD the Macbook runs perfect.
But when I start it with the new SSD theres a error displayed as attached.
I did Snow Leopard into the superdrive while first start with the SSD.
Could you please tell me what is the reason for that and what can I do?
    Many thanks,
    Jo

If you tried to install Snow Leopard on a new machine, that's your problem, not the SSD. SL isn't going to run on a new machine, at least easily. You'd be better served by copying the old drive to the new one with Carbon Copy Cloner and an external enclosure.

  • Detection Error 2100 - Lenovo X240 with Crucial M500 SSD

I have a new Lenovo X240 out of the box.  I immediately upgraded with a Crucial M500 SSD 240mb drive.  The computer is running a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. The BIOS on the laptop is the most current.  The firmware on the M500 is the most current.  It seems that every several times I start or reboot the system I receive "DETECTION ERROR 2100".  After powering off the machine and powering it on again the computer will boot to Winddows.
I have seen numerous posts about this issue between Crucial vs. Lenovo.  I've tried every suggested fix to no avail.  I have tried the configuration using an identical, brand new M500 SSD with the same results.  Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions,.

  • Toshiba Satelite C75D-A7370 Cannot Recognize Crucial M500 SSD drive

    Goal:
I got a Toshiba Satelite C75D-A7370 laptop and I upgraded from the internal HDD to an internal SSD drive.
It is a Crucial M500 with 240GB SSD drive. Crucial says it is compatible with the Satelite model.
    Problem:
When I enter the BIOS, Main-->HDD/SSD does not detect the connected SSD.  Any help?
    Troubleshoot:
In the BIOS, I did the following:
    Turn off Secure Boot
Advanced System Configuration: Switch Boot Mode from UEFI Boot to CSM Boot
Advanced System Configuration: SATA Controller Mode is set to AHCI
The laptop already has the latest version of BIOS:
    InsydeH2O Rev. 3.7
    System BIOS Version 1.4
    EC Version 1.20
If I put the SSD drive in an external case with USB, Windows 8.1 can use the SSD drive as a USB drive. So I know the drive is working.
Thanks in advance for your help.

So close. But I spoke too soon.
Check disk won't work. I tried scheduling it from the My Computer window or through an elevated command prompt (chkdsk /f /r).  No luck.  I've got the error message. I can post that later.  The very last line is this...
    766f6c756d652e63 3f1
Did chkdsk /f /r from the rescue disk command line.  No change.
It counts down 10 seconds and starts to check disk. It errors out right away.
From the rescue disk, startup repair.  That was fine, but didn't change the check disk results.
The Microsoft Fixit I found earlier didn't do anything. I think it only checked for updates.
Could be Norton Internet Security, although I doubt it.
When I put the Crucial SSD in I did a quick ntfs format and named that volume C.  In diskpart, I noticed the system reserved 100MB partition was letter C.  I think the main hard partition was D.  I switched the system 100MB to T and made the main partition C.  Within Windows, the servered reserved partition didn't have any letter -- except I did put a letter on it in diskpart from the rescue disk.
I just tried within Windows, making 100MB T.  And then I removed it. That was someone's solution online.

  • Crucial M500 960GB Dead, no longer seen in Bios?

I have a Crucial M500 960GB SSD drive that I think might have died. I've used it in my desktop since late 2013. The drive on two occasions this past 4 months just vanishes from my bios. I would have to reset the pc like 20 times or more for it to show up. The last time it happened I figured out if I pulled the PC power cord from the PC and held the power button down to drain the residual power in the PSU and the motherboard, this would sometimes allow the drive to be scene on bootup. The bios no longer shows the device as being attached. So I trouble shooted this by installing the SSD in another completely separate pc with also a different sata cable. No dice as that pc also doesn't show a drive attached. I then today bought and tried a Startech USB 3.0 to 2.5 sata HDD/SSD cable thinking maybe I could access my SSD through my laptop via USB 3.0. This didn't work will the crucial, but I did verify my laptop could read a Sandisk Extreme 60gb drive SSD drive I had sitting on a shelf. My crucial m500 came with firmware MU02 and I believe I updated it a year ago or so to MU03. I remember reading something about if the firmware wasn't updated the drive could possibly stop working because of write cycles or something like that. I see crucial is already on firmware MU05 for this drive. Anybody have any ideas as to what my issue might be. DesktopI7-3770k MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard16gb Crucial Ballistix RamXFX R9 290 Seasonic X-series 850 Gold PSUWindows 8.1 64 bit  Other Desktop I tried it onI5- 4430MSI Z87 MPower16gb Crucial Ballistix RamXFX R9 290Seasonic X-Series 850 GoldWindows 7 64 bit

I also have a 1TB crucial SSD M500 or M550, the one with 960 GB and crypto support. I have been using it for less than a year.Unfortunately it appears to be extremely buggy, unreliable and slow.Luckily I bought it as a second drive on my MBP (in place of the DVD player).I use it for hosting virtual machines and backing up my primary system disk.I experienced issues with that drive several times, always the same kind: at first the drive disappears. This disk utility diagnostics finds the disk but says the partition/filesystem is badly damaged and needs to be repaired. I suspect it experienced some random error, like bit flipping, which for this size is actually not surprising.Last time, instead of running the repair or reformatting, I waited for a bit, and reran the disk utility test.Surprisingly, the test ended up passing with no fail.I was almost happy not to have to backup/restore but tried again the test procedure, just to be sure. This time it failed with another error than the first time. So I tried another time and it failed with yet another error!!I must stress out the fact that I used the clicked "verify" not the the "repair" button of this disk utility, which to me means, nothing should be changed during the check pass. Last but not least, the performances of this disk are disappointing: When running vmware fusion with vm image on crucial drive, fusion is awfully slow. This is surprising because the crucial appears as connected on a SATAIII 6Gb/s, while the primary is only connectd at 3Gb/s, but crucial is MUCH slower. Actually, booting with this drive as 2d drives slows down the boot noticeably compared to a boot with only one drive. All this is very disappointing...

  • SSD Crucial M500 is not seen in Windows 8.1 setup but it is seen in Windows 7 setup

    Hello,
I have problem with new SSD Crucial M500 on new notebook HP 250 G3 (J0Y29EA).
Notebook has Windows 8.1 and latest BIOS.
I want to replace HDD with SSD.
So I created 4 DVDs with "HP Recovery Media Creation".
Then I format SSD in Disk Management on Windows 7 desktop.
Then I shutdown the notebook, replace HDD with SSD, disable Secure Boot in BIOS and boot from the first DVD. Some kind of Windows system came up and showed message that no disk was found.
I have Windows 8.1 DVD so I tried boot from it. Everything was ok but there was nothing to choose in disk/partition dialog (dialog where I want to install system). I tried to load some drivers from USB flash drive but with no success  (maybe wrong drivers). I tried this with Secure Boot disabled and enabled, Legacy mode disabled/enabled. No success. I also tried run console (shift+F10) and list disks in diskpart with message "There are no fixed disks to show". No success.
I tried old SSD Crucial M4 from desktop in notebook and system from this old SSD (Windows 7) boot up in seconds (Legacy mode enabled).
I let the old SSD in notebook and boot from Windows 8.1 DVD and it was shown in disk/partition dialog.
I put the new SSD back in notebook and tried to boot from Windows 7 DVD. New SSD was shown in disk/partition dialog. Installation was completed and Windows 7 boot from new SSD in seconds.
I let the new SSD in notebook boot from Windows 8.1 DVD and no disk was shown to choose.
I tried boot from bootable recovery CD based on Windows 7 and the new SSD was shown in somelike disk manager. I tried boot from ubuntu recovery USB flash drive and the SSD shown too.
I tried combinations with MBR and GPT on new SSD with no success.
It looks for me like Windows 8.1 doesn't like Crucial M500
So I test another Crucial M500 and same results.
    Maybe some UEFI problem.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

I give up and return M500 (I had two drives).
I bought Intel SSD 530 180GB, cloned Windows 8.1 on desktop.
Set SSD windows partition as C: and HDD windows partition as E:.
Put SSD and HDD back to notebook.
Windows boot up from SSD in seconds.
    Result: SSD Crucial M500 + HP 250 G3 (J0Y29EA) + Windows 8.1 are not compatible.
I don't know which one to blame, but this combination is problematic.
Intel SSD 530 had some issues too, like windows freezing.
One can be solved with windows update fix it (diag) from http://support.microsoft.com/fixit.
Another one is waking up from sleep mode. It can be  partially solved in Power managment, but it's not elegant.
    So that's all for now.
    Have a nice year.
